the beginning of modern quality management..........2005-08-04
Before Six Sigma, TQM, SPC & Deming, there was Shewhart. This classic work by Dr. Shewhart introduces the principles that were to become the foundation for process quality control. While not as concise as his later "Statistical Method from the Viewpoint of Quality Control," this text provides a more in-depth introduction to basic statistical control concepts...very good for understanding the thinking behind Shewhart control charts.

Knowing Woman: A Feminine Psychology
ASIN: 0898624606 |
Book Description
For women in Western society, there is no straightforward path of development to autonomous adulthood. The double-bind of female authority--that a women cannot be both a healthy adult and an ideal woman-- is the context in which a woman must construct her self in this culture. Whether she sees herself as ``too needy' or ``too controlling,`` 'too insecure`` or 'too self-reliant,`` she is gathering evidence to support a theory of personal inadequacy. The traditional perspectives of psychodynamics and psychopathology reinforce women's sense of inferiority. How then does a woman claim her own authority-- the validity of her own truth, beauty, goodness, originating in her own experience.
Young-Eisendrath and Wiedemann break with the tradition of "deficit thinking," the examination of what is absent, wrong, or deficient. Recognizing this as a fundamental barrier to the empowerment of women, they work instead from an understanding of what is already strong and
satisfying in the lives of women and girls in a patriarchal society. This volume unravels the paradox of female authority through the examination of its sociocultural, symbolic, and personal dimensions. Chapters 1 through 4 present a re-visioning of the female self, using the psychologies of C. G. Jung and Jane Loevinger as major theoretical frameworks. The authors argue for a modification of Jung's concept of "animus' --the repressed masculine in the girl or woman--and in chapters 5 through 8 present a detailed model of psychotherapy based on five stages of animus development. Using a wealth of clinical material from their own practices --including two extended case presentations in chapters 9 through 11-- the authors skillfully illustrate their own efforts to help women assume greater personal authority. The book's concluding chapter presents New Texts and Contexts for Female Development.
Unique in its combination of feminist theory, social psychology, and Jungian psychology, FEMALE AUTHORITY offers a fresh approach to the analysis of gender concerns in identity. The book will be of great value to practitioners and theoreticians in the human services. The discussion of women's self-esteem and personal authority, and the probing of conflicts inherent in female identity in our society, place this book among the major recent contributions to the development of a psychology of women.

Female Authority: Empowering Women Through Psychotherapy.......2000-04-28
Polly Young-Eisendrath and Florence Wiedemann examine the process of how women in the American culture develop autonomy. The authors, as Jungian analysts, explore the female path of individuation using characters derived from Greek Mythology and contemporary case studies. The path involves a successive integration of the unconscious animus complexes throughout the woman's life-span. In Jungian psychology the animus appears to be the source inside the female unconscious which provides male representations within women's dreams. The authors outline a five stage model for animus development by providing a path through psychotherapy. The model for ego development for women includes moving away from a symbiotic relationship with one's mother characterized by Demeter and Persephone and overcoming dependencies and stereotypes exemplified by Pandora and Zeus. Finally, the process evolves through a series of tasks involved within her relationship with her mate as seen in the Amor-Psyche myth. The work is brilliantly creative as it addresses the quest of many American women regarding finding one's Self on a depth psychological level The book offers a path by interweaving a series of mythological models with case study examples. This book is destined to be a classic in the psychology of women.

Book Description
Five stories of loss at sea
For all its soul-stirring romance, the tall-ship renaissance has a tragic side, and professional mariner and maritime scholar Dan Parrott explores it in this groundbreaking reconstruction of five controversial sea disasters of the past half century. Working from official documents, survivor and expert interviews, and his own considerable tall-ship experience, Parrott re-creates the losses of five sail-training vessels: the 316-foot Pamir (1957), 117-foot Albatross (1961), 117-foot Marques (1984), 137-foot Pride of Baltimore (1986), and 125-foot Maria Asumpta (1995), which together claimed 112 lives. In Tall Ships Down, he reveals that, contrary to official findings, ignorance of and disregard for age-old practices of seamanship were at least as responsible for the tragedies as "acts of God."
He vividly re-creates the final voyage of each and the events surrounding the disasters. The book's final section, an unforgettable seminar on seamanship, explores the roles played by ship stability, structural integrity, weather, human error, and standards of risk in tragedies at sea.
Customer Reviews:
Must read for any serious sailor.......2007-01-10
I am new to sailing and not a captain and have not sailed the seven seas. However, this book is the best lesson any new sailor can learn because it is a very good analysis of why ships sink, any ship, not just a tall ship. The key is that these are very big ships that people equate with safety but the principles outlined in this book apply to all boats.
I feel sad for the lose of life due to these sinkings and the author makes it clear that prevention of future occurances is his goal in writing this book.
I highly recommend this book.
why some ships sink.......2004-02-02
Readers seeking spine-tingling narratives of sea disasters will be disappointed with Tall Ships Down, because this brilliant book is instead a penetrating analysis of the circumstances of loss of several traditional sail ships in recent times. In five lucid essays, the author uses each sinking to illuminate the intersection of changes in nautical technological traditions, situational decision-making, and construction of sailing heritage. Beyond sailors or maritime buffs, this superbly written work should capture anyone interested in the sociology of technological change. The author is thoughtful and engaging, with his experience as captain of large traditional sail ships only one source of the book's extraordinary insights. Tall Ships Down will take its place as a classic alongside technology and culture studies such as Hilton's Eastland: Legacy of the Titanic. I'd consider it a shame if the author does not give us next a full-length treatment of the sinking of the Pamir, or a biography of Alan Villiers.
A Great Read.......2003-05-15
This book is a great read for both professional mariners and armchair sailors alike. Professionals will appreciate the insight into these disasters and their causes, while the armchair sailor will find the sea stories fascinating enough to keep their interest. The author's writing style is easy to read, and his research is fairly extensive. All in all an outstanding book that deserves a place in any nautical library.
A Must-Read for Professional Sailors.......2002-10-24
This book is an outstanding study of five sail training vessel accidents. It is not only interesting, but full of important lessons for all sailors, particularly for professional sailors of traditional vessels. Captain Parrott has done the sailing world a great service by analysing these tragedies, not with romance or melodrama, but with compassion and empathy. As a seasoned professional himself, he investigates without being judgemental, and provides us with information we can use to prevent future accidents.

Book Description
Bring Me the Rhinoceros is an unusual guide to happiness and a can opener for your thinking. For fifteen hundred years, Zen koans have been passed down through generations of masters, usually in private encounters between teacher and student. This book deftly retells fourteen traditional koans, which are partly paradoxical questions dangerous to your beliefs and partly treasure boxes of ancient wisdom. Koans show that you don’t have to impress people or change into an improved, more polished version of yourself. Instead you can find happiness by unbuilding, unmaking, throwing overboard, and generally subverting unhappiness. John Tarrant brings the heart of the koan tradition out into the open, reminding us that the old wisdom remains as vital as ever, a deep resource available to anyone in any place or time.
“Here’s a book to crack the happiness code if ever there was one. Forget about self-improvement, five-point plans, and inspirational seminars that you can’t remember a word of a week later. Tarrant’s is the fix that fixes nothing because there is nothing to fix. Your life is a koan, a deep question whose answer you are already living—this is the true inspiration, and Tarrant delivers.”—Roger Housden, author of the Ten Poems series
“Every life is full of koans, and yet you can’t learn from a book how to understand them. You need someone to put you in the right frame of mind to see the puzzles and paradoxes of your experience. With intelligence, humor, and steady, deep reflection, John Tarrant does this as no one has done it before. This book could take you to a different and important level of experience.”—Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and Dark Nights of the Soul
“Bring Me the Rhinoceros is one of the best books ever written about Zen. But it is more than that: it is a book of Zen, pointing us to reality by its own fluent and witty example. John Tarrant has the rare ability to enter the minds of the ancient Zen masters as they do their amazing pirouettes upon the void and, with a few vivid touches, to illuminate our lives with their sayings.”—Stephen Mitchell, author of Gilgamesh: A New English Version
“This book’s straightforward honesty, clear writing, and destabilizing insight have a profound effect. John Tarrant does indeed bring on the rhinoceros and a host of other powerful but invisible creatures, ready to run us down when we refuse to acknowledge the fierce, awkward, and beautiful world we inhabit”—David Whyte, author of Crossing the Unknown Sea
“John Tarrant’s talent for telling these classic Zen tales transforms them magically into a song in which, as you read, the words disappear as the music continues to echo in your mind and make you happy. Mysteriously, like koans.” —Sylvia Boorstein, author of Pay Attention, for Goodness’ Sake
Customer Reviews:
This is by far my favorite book.......2007-03-17
Okay, Mountain Tasting runs a close second, but this book gets me through hard times. It is great to read aloud to a friend or spouse. It is the only book I now recommend to those dealing with life-threatening illnesses.
The koans work me and transform my suffering into something like acceptance.
My only complaint is that it has not yet come out in paperback.
bring me the rhinoceros.......2005-10-14
i love this book. it has crawled into my heart. tender, loving stories of real life and finding peace in the very midst of all life is. john tarrant writes with grace and beauty and humor. thank you!!!
Wonderful Small Gem!.......2005-04-30
Put simply, this is one of the best books on spiritual practice - and on living a good life - that I have ever read. If you're the least bit interested in such matters, you'll enjoy the rhinoceros. I had never felt much interest in koans before, but John Tarrant enabled me to see them in a new light. His is the warm, humorous, and deeply wise side of zen.
Please join in our discussion.......2004-12-10
I am a member of Pacific Zen Institute (PZI) and John Tarrant is my primary teacher. That being said, I offer a little different perspective than what you may read in other responses to his book, "Bring Me the Rhinoceros."
We at PZI have one-on-one interviews with John during any given month as well as at retreats. This is the context in which most people view koan work. But the word koan literally means "public notice". John has reconnected our community to the ways of old Chinese masters by bringing public discussion back into koan studies. He does this by conducting koan seminars throughout the year where we will meditate with a koan, then share our experience with the group.
What John has done with "Bring Me the Rhinoceros" is to offer every reader the opportunity to join in a grand public koan discussion. John writes how these koans have affected him; he writes about other people and their koan experiences; but it doesn't end here.
Sometimes I read one chapter just before going to sleep. Other times I read a chapter just before my morning meditation period. How have you experienced these koans? Join us, then, in this grand discussion.
Highly Reccomended reading for seekers.......2004-11-11
How comfortable I find myself in these pages. John Tarrant brings us intriguing stories and a Rhino, a thick-skinned beast that we can ride into the darkness of the unknown, into the mystery of who we are, why we suffer, and how joy can found on a path that goes beyond what can be conceptually understood. An excellent gift book too.
