Milkovich and Newman? Do the other reviewer's have the right book As I right this review I have the book next to me and I can't find any reference to a Milkovich and Newman? Whoever these fine people are I can't see how they have anything to do with this textbook.
As for the textbook, I had to use it for my introductory Management class as part of my MBA program. And halfway through my MBA program this book gets the award for the dryest, boring, waste of trees. Yeach I've complained about Marketing, but this book is far worse.
Instead of explaining the intricacies of management and addressing contemporary issues in the typical office, this book focuses on stating the obvious, restating it again, without offering any arguments, any conclusions, or even giving any advice.
Consider this typical sentence, which I found by randomly opening the book. 'As previously indicated, conflict may have either positive or negative consequences for the organization, depnding upon how much exists and how it is managed.' (pg. 358).
When they aren't boring the reader with their lack of depth and insight the authors bore the reader with stupid asides on companies that add nothing. Consider the following sentence, 'The 13,000 restaurants in McDonald's network all pay attention to quality, service, and cleanliness.' (pg. 41). You mean the authors find it necessary to teach MBA students how to serve fast food? I thought that was the reason kids enroll in these programs so they don't won't end up working in a fast food joint.
This book was so bad, that some of my classmates gave up even trying to read the chapters, because they weren't getting anything out of it. And although the material is very elementary it's written with so much filler material that it is extremely hard reading. It as if the authors were paid based on how many words they were able to write, so that the book would look thinker and the publisher could justify it's outrageous list price.
And the worst part is that the material is so disorganized that some of the information in the chapter summaries isn't even covered in the chapters. I'm just glad I only had to put up with semester of this trash.
Easy reading.......2004-01-08
I really liked this book. If you are interested in psychology and management, this book would be a good start.

Crucial to theory of anxiety.......2007-02-17
Often overlooked, this concise exploration of origins and manifestations of anxiety is often brilliant and provocative. Freud explores the basic properties of fear, anxiety, and touches on the sexual component of these human states of mind/body. Freud hypothesizes that the origin of anxiety is founded in the repressed memory of the human's separation from the mother's originary nutrition during the act of birth. All manifestations of anxiety are (in essence) a resurgence of this primal fear. This is crucial to the role of biology and nourishment to psychoanalysis, often glossed over in its modern variants.
Eye-opening, informative, NOT for the layman.......2005-02-04
The previous reviewer was correct in his/her statement that this text is not at all for the layman. I am not trained in the field, and was only able to understand any of it after having read most of the body of Freud's work. However, at about 120 pages, this brief exegesis on anxiety (called a neurosis in Freud's day, now called a disorder) is an informative look at three things: Freud's peculiar but influential theory on neurosis; something of what psychology was in the first half of the twentieth century; and a fascinating spin on anxiety and its causes and symptoms, as Freud and the early analysts saw it.
Put simply, Freud described anxiety as essentially a glitch in the interaction between the ego (control) and id (animal desires); or a problem with a person's fight-or-flight response. This definition, I believe, has survived somewhat into the present, though Freud's explanation of the cause of the glitch resting primarily in the supression of the libido has probably been somewhat discounted. Remember: Freud's theories were very viable, it was his explanations (based on sexuality) that are brought into question.
The other components of the title, inhibitions and symptoms, can be most simply defined as follows. In the case of inhibitions, those things that prevent the id from experiencing its pleasure successfully (Freud broke the necessity of function down to what he called the Pleasure Principle, or the fact that at root we all seek pleasure to satify our id). And in the case of symptoms, the physical and psychosomatic manifestations of the results of those inhibitions working against the id.
In short, anxiety is the symptomatic result of the problems caused when inhibitions are instituted by the ego in an attempt to control the id.
The take away from this is that, although much of Freud's actual explanations have been revamped and often discarded, his theories, as in the present case of anxiety, are still fascinating and worth a look. If you can get through the couched terminology.

Really hard to read, this book is not for the laymen.

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a necessary process by which a cell may die without adversely affecting its environment. It plays a crucial role in normal development, and in the body's defence mechanisms against disease. One of the most rapidly expanding knowledge bases being established is on the molecular mechanisms controlled by a variety of gene products including Bcl-2, caspases, death receptors, and proteolytic targets, as well as the central role of the mitochondrion. The major challenge in apoptosis research is how the protein products involved operate in an intricate web of signaling pathways that also play a crucial role in cell proliferation and differentiation. This book concentrates on elucidating these signal transduction mechanisms, an area not properly reviewed by other apoptosis texts.

The Muscle and Might Training Tracker - Stuart McRobert
The training tracker assumes a reasonable level of knowledge of weight training. It lists sample exercise programs, but provides no information on correct technique for performing these exercises. Nonetheless, it does offer good advice on training muscle groups to avoid over training. It also provides a fair amount of detail on how to use the training diary effectively and provides an excellent rationale for its use. There is also a section that allows the user to monitor their diet (Calories and protein), sleep, weight and waistline on a weekly basis.
In the section on developing a total exercise program it emphasises the need to balance the weight training with cardiorespiratory work and stretching, and then provides no chart to effectively monitor these facets of training. There is space at the back for notes which could be used, but such an important part of a balanced program needs an effective means of tracking progress. For the older weight trainer such as myself it offers some very good advice on suitable cardio exercise routines with particular emphasis on how to avoid wear-and-tear chronic injuries.
Overall, the book provides an excellent means of tracking progress for those who need a little order and discipline to see results (I think that covers most of us!). The absence of a means to monitor cardio workouts is the only shortcoming in an otherwise excellent training diary. Worth getting!

Anyone interested in learning to read the Hebrew Bible in its original language will find within the pages of this book all the resources needed to begin this wonderful journey. The second part teaches word and sentence structure of the Hebrew language by breaking down each Hebrew word in Genesis chapter one, verses one through five. The Hebrew text of Genesis chapter one is provided for reading and comprehension practices in part three. The fourth part of the book contains charts and dictionaries of prefixes, suffixes, words and roots of the Hebrew language to assist the reader with vocabulary definitions and comprehension. Within a short amount of time the Hebrew student will soon be reading the Bible through the eyes of the author rather than the opinions of a translator.

Strong book for familiarizing yourself with the Hebrew Alphabet.......2006-10-28
This book is extremely helpful in getting to know the Hebrew alphabet and pronunciation. The phonetic exercises are very good, and I find myself being reminded of Hebrew words just from hearing similar sounds.
The downside is that this book is in no way extensive. Unless you would really enjoy reading the dictionary in the back, there are only about 4-7 examples to help build vocabulary in each chapter, along with the entire chapter of Genesis 1:1.
Learning Hebrew is for the patient. I was hoping for vocabulary building exercises similar to those when I learned the Romance Languages: I am running. I ran. You are running. I sent a letter, etc. I would rather have those simple sentences and THEN approach Genesis, rather than building my vocabulary straight from its verses. One can't be expected to learn Italian by diving straight into Dante, but that's analogous to what this book does.
Simply, the easiest........2006-07-18
I thought learning Hebrew was going to be difficult, not only for me but my children I was trying to teach.(ages 4-10) I was wrong this book made it sooooo simple and fast. Easy to understand. No, research needed or alot of searching for what you need in this book. Very well laid out. When you are done with one day you simply turn the page, you have review of the previous page and the new letters and sounds. You do not need another book to learn the letters and sounds and vowel points.
Highly recommended.

A basic book with much repetitive information from Jeff Benner's other books. I have enjoyed them, but feel the books involving "word origins", etc, have a lot of duplicate information.
