Fischer Black is known for his brilliance as well as his sometimes controversial opinions. Highly respected for his scholarly writings in finance, he now moves into different territory with this incisive, unconventional assessment of general equilibrium theory and what that theory reveals about business cycles, growth, and labor economics.
The general equilibrium approach, Black asserts, can be used to explain most of the economy's behavior. It can explain business cycles and growth without using sticky prices, irrationality, economies of scale, or imperfect competition. It can explain the volatility of consumption, output, sales, investment, and inventories with axiomatic utility and constant-returns-to-scale production. It can explain temporary layoffs, job changes with and without intervening unemployment, and the behavior of vacancies. It can explain lower wages in part-time jobs, wages that increase rapidly with time on the job, and the forces that cause migration from poor to rich countries.
Although the general equilibrium approach can't be tested in conventional ways, it can be used to generate examples that explain stylized facts -- generalized observations from the real world -- that have preoccupied macroeconomists for the last decade. Black contrasts his interpretation of these facts with conventional interpretations. Finally, he reviews a substantial body of literature on these topics.

A deeply insightful anti-Economics economics book.......2006-07-27
Fischer Black was among the most brilliant economists of the 20th century, with an eccentric style. This book is a masterpiece that goes back to Von Neumann-Morgenstern first principles to reconstruct macroeconomics, stripping away errors due to oversimplified models and overaggregated data. The argument is short and easy to understand, although its subtleties repay many rereadings. The bulk of the book consists of short refutations of other views, organized alphabetically by economist last name (Fischer was an eccentric guy). These contain many important insights, although they require familiarity with economics terminology to understand, and the random topical order is annoying.
Good resource but not for learning macroeconomics.......2000-11-01
This is an excellent resource for a graduate student in economics to have (or for a professor). It has good summaries of many articles and clear information on a wide variety of issues relating to macroeconomics. However, it would be extremely difficult to learn macroeconomics from this book. It assumes that you already have a wide knowledge.

Maslow reaches with the "a priori" bias of pluralism. Clearly he struggled with his own being and sought to discover himself in terms of pluralistic existentialism. It is heartbreaking to read this book knowing he was never able to find his answer.
Maslow and religion.......2006-06-29
Being a Maslow fan I actually expected more than I feel I got. Maybe because I felt that the religious angle was a little too much. Peak experience is an important phenomenon. And of course Maslow cannot write about it without giving some inspiring insights. But I felt Maslow has had to press his material somewhat to make it fit the religious experiences of a Buddha or Mohammed.
Maslow on Peak Experiences.......2005-12-25
Maslow makes a good distinction between the peakers and the non-peakers and makes an excellent connection between this and organized religion. His use of the term "non-peakers" is not to refer to people who do not have peak experiences, for he believes that every one has peak experiences but he uses this terminology to refer to a person who is afraid of peak experiences The purpose of organized religion for him is to communicate peak experiences to non-peakers. His position tend to advance personal revelation over dogmatic revelations. The question he leaves unanswered is how personal revelations can be verified or validated? I believe organized religion will help in confirming peak experiences. If not, what most people might call peak experiences might just be neurosis.
He also advances a religious pluralism that will accommodate every person, both the atheist and the believer. Maslow gives us good insights into peak experiences and helps us to appreciate more these experiences. His book is interesting to read and easy to follow. I enjoyed reading the book.
Insightfully Laconic.......2000-07-18
In "Religions, Values, and Peak-Experiences" Maslow combines erudite lucidity with an economy of words rarely achieved in the world of the written word. Because of my unfamiliarity with any of his other works I cannot compare, but I was deeply impressed with this book.
After reading a few pages agreeing with what Maslow proffers was no longer a criteria for judging this book as everyone honest to themselves should process the thought contained on this pages. I recommend this book to all who claim any sort of belief in divinity and to all who do not.

Billy Watson's Croker Sack is candid and clear and Mr. Burroughs himself is an expert in syntax. The tales are honest and human without being sentimental. This is the type of book you listen to carefully, sounding out words, hearing them together. The style is self-effacing in some ways - I reread sentences, surprised the second time by their beauty, but more surprised that I didn't notice them as much the first time, the prose is so natural. And this is, perhaps, the best quality of the collection - that it so naturally evokes eloquence. I recommend this collection to anyone fascinated by words and sentences, but more to those seeking well-told yarns about the things that make us most human.

I bought this book soon after I bought the first bike I've owned and ridden in 16+ years. Alot has changed since then, including the whole macho-ization of the sport. It was kinda scarey getting started. But this book explains things well, is spiced with nice, believable stories about people's biking experiences and it has a sense of humor -- something really necessary if you're gonna saddle up and get out there on the road with all the yahoos and gonzos. I especially liked the advice on essential clothing. Certain items really WILL make your rides more pleasant. (And I always thought 'bike clothes' were an affectation!)Weaver really loves her sport and it shows -- she wants to win converts and she's got me hooked. The streets of Dallas will never be the same, now!!

Coming from a college student with a high number of international friends, I found this book interesting and succint. The book helped to explain many of the reasons for some of my friend's behaviors because of cultural traditions. Overall, I give this book a nod of approval.
Useful, readable, accurate, respectful.......1999-09-30
Norine Dresser's work is an invaluable guide to helping people navigate the dangerous shoals of intercultural intersections. From the varying significance of yellow flowers through the opposing attitudes toward salt to the values of folk remedies, Dresser gives excellent and respectful advice.
Organized by clear and useful categories, the book offers interesting anecdotes to illustrate the cultural clashes sparked by apparently small things like the color of the flowers in a thank-you gift. Where I have the experience to know, I find her information accurate. She is invariably respectful of all cultures, and offers explanations of cultural beliefs which may on the surface seem irrational to our Western perceptions.
The book is written in language and style which is available to readers as young as junior high school, but there is no condescension either to the reader or the described cultures.
This is fine and valuable book, helpful to international businesspeople, school teachers, travelers, and neighbors. I recommend it to anyone who comes in contact with people from other countries, either here or abroad.

For decades I thought it was because some prankster had been on just before me. All that wasted time while no one got on or off had begun to bother me. Now that I know the reason behind it, I smile. So glad to have this and other cultural differences explained. Thank you Norrine Dresser. This one's on my gift list. (Bonus (not in book): Did you know that if you ask someone who is deaf to have lunch and they give a big frown as they nod yes. that it means YES VERY MUCH! The deaf tendency to frown to emphasize has led to a lot of misunderstandings.

"Multicultural Manners" was an interesting cruise through the often dauniting seas of custom and manners. Dresser provides succinct vignettes of real world cultural clashes that lend an air of reality to the many differences between peoples. Its easy to read format and small narrratives made for a quick read. I actually found myself in need of some of the information I had gleaned from the pages. The work, however, is disappointingly shallow. It fails to explore the underlying principles of cultural variations in favour of a brief glance at surface phenomena. Dresser's attitude toward non-western medicine was both uninformed and arrogantly dismissive. She would have done well to avoid the issue altogether rather than flaunt her raging ignorance before the world. All in all "Multicultural Manners" was a fun read, worth the time and investment.

I enjoyed this almanac immensely. There is a new trivia section that can stump even the genius of sports. There were many errors and some in every section. I don't understand what the rush to finish the almanac was. Hopefully, it's mistake free next time.

The book is very comprehensive but I am shocked and disappointed that something from Sports Illustrated would have so many mistakes. I found errors in almost every section. Many of them things that should have been caught by an editor.
