Book Description

Timothy Smith argues that the French economic and social model is imploding on itself despite good intentions. Bad policies and vested interests that exploit the rhetoric of "solidarity" and the specter of globalization have prevented necessary changes from being effected. Making frequent comparisons with the U.S., U.K., Canada, Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands, Smith argues that change need not follow the inegalitarian U.S. or British paths in order to lead to a more balanced French society.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and stimulating read.......2005-01-26

This is a very enlightening cross-disciplinary look at where the French welfare state finds itself today. The author does a wonderful job of harpooning the self-delusional assumptions the French make about their government's social programs. Likely, this won't be warmly received in France, but challenging the status quo is no way to win popularity contests. The United States and Canada could do with a similar treatment from this author.

From a stylistic standpoint, I think it is important to note that this is not just another dry academic tome. The text is quite lively and there are more than a few colourful turns of phrase thrown in for good measure.

              Book Description

The agricultural paradigm is already undergoing a shift in focus from food security towards nutritional quality. Horticultural crops besides improving biological productivity and nutritional standards also have enormous export potential. This group of crops comprising fruits, vegetables, root and tuber crops, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and condiments and ornamental crops, would constitute core of any such agro-economic strategy. In addition to supplementing the economy and national food grid by providing fresh and processed fruits, vegetable, nuts etc., horticultural crops also help to promote diversification. Depletion of plant genetic resources in areas of diversity at a rapid pace is a matter of global concern. This book profiles all scientific management aspects of the horticultural crop genetic resources including their diversity, conservation and sustainable utilization. It also addresses vital concerns regarding management of horticultural crop genetic resources from diverse perspectives and provides recommendations for action in certain areas of research that must be pursued with intensity. The publication would serve as a valuable comprehensive scientific reference for breeders, researchers, teachers, students and policy makers in biology and agriculture.

              5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......1999-12-28

This book explains the very basics of Junguian analysis - and of psychoanalysis in general, for that matter, in a very clear and organized way. I do reccomend it for all those who want to learn something about the subject and also to those who are considering going into analysis, because it contains an outline of the whole process and includes considerations about the frequency, duration and cost of sessions as well. The book did help me very much and I found it both concise and precise.I find it a classic, a must read, along with Karen Horney's books. And I keep going back to it every time I want to reflect about individuation and personal growth.

                Book Description

In feudal Japan, ninja warriors were credited with supernatural powers of invisibility and ways of learning any secret. They also were feared for their skill in espionage and assassination. Behind these legends is the reality of an ancient, sophisticated, highly systematic martial art: ninjutsu. Perhaps the least understood martial art of Japan, ninjutsu emphasizes naturalness of movement, responsiveness to one's adversary, and total practicality. Women as well as men were trained in this obscure deadly art. As its form crystallized, practitioners established an organized system for maintaining absolute secrecy. Now, all aspects of ninjutsu are revealed in this remarkable book written by the first American trained as a ninja.

5 out of 5 stars Hayes own Experience and Introduction to Ninpo as an Art.......2006-05-02

This was the first book on ninpo I read as a youth. Thankfully, I believe it did a lot to innoculate me against much of the...other stuff out there claiming to be "ninjutsu". Author Stephen K. Hayes actually was proficient in Karate (3rd dan), running a dojo in Atlanta, Georgia before hanging up everything and flying off to Japan to find Masaaki Hatsumi, a Ninja historian and one of the few holders of a legitimate titles of proficiency in traditional Japanese martial arts associated with the ninja of Old Japan.

In Noda City, Hayes meets Master Teacher Hatsumi, and the two discuss martial arts. At one point Hayes is discussing the intricacies of a particular kata (form), when Hatsumi shows an exact imitation of it. For the first time Hayes is struck by the stiffness of the movements.

During their initial meeting, in a discussion concerning the varied physical aspects of Taijutsu in Ninpo, Hatsumi describes making use of striking as well as locking techniques, when Hayes interjects, "Like karate and Judo combined". Hayes ruminates on how his original assumptions probably appeared to Hatsumi a lot like "...comparing ninjutsu to wine tasting and insect collecting" (page 40). What sets this book apart from others is the personal tone, the recounting of actual experiences and situations Hayes encountered. He does his darndest to paint a true picture and keep grandstanding and ego out of the picture.

This is not an repetitive pedantic self help book (thankfully!). Hayes telling of his various encounters in ninjutsu training, with the Grandmaster and other teachers and students in Japan, and Japanese culture--new and old, are the best teaching tools.

Hayes went on to return to the United States and pioneer the legitimate teaching of Ninjutsu. Whether you practice martial arts or not, this book is an eye opening experience, a real education.

5 out of 5 stars Great history, philosophy, stories and photos........2005-11-19

This is one of the first books that I read about ninjutsu back in the day as a teenager and it still is fun to pull off the shelf and skip around. It recounts Hayes's first encounter with Hatsumi, his finding himself being one of the few non-Japanese to study the art before the big ninja boom of the 80s when everything got so stupid in the public's eye, the brutality of early training under Hatsumi, some recollections of unconventional training and a few demonstrations of techniques. There are also many great photos from the old school, which you may find as interesting as I do.

I would highly recommend Hatsumi's "Secrets form the Grandmaster" recently re-issued, "Essence of Ninjutsu", as well as a highly illustrated, if also slightly inaccurate text by Lewis on the subject entitled "Ninja".

Below you will read many reviews that tear the book up for not being clear, not teaching enough, etc. Fine. But how much can a person learn about movement from a book unless they already know how to move? Same goes for fighting. So dismiss those reviews as not understanding the point of the text. Then of course there is the person who suggests the Ashida Kim books are the real deal and that the techniques of Hatsumi and Hayes are "too weak". Well, anyone can do bad Japanese karate in a black uniform with a mask while holding exotic weapons and call it ninjutsu, but that is not the case with the legitimate instruction of the Bujinkan. If soft equals weak, then that's enough said. But for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, the truth is evident. Moreover, I would suspect that those who have ever trained with Hayes or Hatsumi in person would not say such things, at least the pain in their body would tell them they are lying!

5 out of 5 stars Full perspective on Ninja.......2003-12-23

With sensitivity, Hayes gives readers a clear
explanation of Ninja history, society, weaponry,
and spiritual practice. I appreciated his detailed
explanation of the mental training of ninjutsu.
                Highly recommended.

                              Book Description

The notion that "charity begins at home" has never been easier to teach children than with this enchanting gift set based on the Jewish tradition of tzadakah, in which children save coins in banks for the less fortunate. Added inspiration for contributing to worthy causes comes from Emmy award-winning television personality Mister Rogers, whose peaceful "neighborhood" has been a comforting presence in millions of homes for more than 25 years. In the book that accompanies this GIVING BOX, Mister Rogers teaches the lessons of generosity and charity through heartwarming fictional stories set in countries around the world. For children, he describes how good it feels to give to those less fortunate, and reveals how even one child's contribution can make a difference. For parents, Rogers offers wise suggestions and practical guidelines to help teach children the moral lesson of compassion for others, and the value of charitable donation.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting! A WONDERFUL book for all ages........2001-06-07

This book is enchanting! Although intended for children aged 9-12, it is perfect for all ages, including adult.

The book explains the concept of sharing and giving, and includes many folk tales, fables, and legends (from many countries) that stress the importance of charitable giving. If you like the Chicken Soup for the Soul types of books, you should greatly enjoy this. And you could use the folk tales as the basis for many crafts to make for yourself or for gifts (not to mention to teach children about charitable giving).

It also stresses The Giving Box, used to keep handy to put spare change in at the end of the day, to share with those less fortunate when the box is full. That would be marvelous for chidren, but is also great for anyone at any age. The book explains the Jewish tradition of this type of box, which is still used in many Jewish homes -- and how to adapt it for other faiths, since charitable giving applies to all of us.

HIGHLY recommended for people of all ages. If you've got a heart -- or need one -- this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A lesson for all of us.......2000-12-14

Mr. Rogers, once again, offers beautiful lessons for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Rogers is Timeless.......2000-11-28

I grew up watching Mr. Rogers' neighborhood and now I am passing him on to my neice and nephew with The Giving Box. This adorable package comes with a little colorful tin bank and a book that talks about why we should help others. There are also cute little stories from different countries to teach kids about other cultures and traditions. A really good product to share with your kids, particularly at this time of year.

                              Book Description

The first work of fiction by a President of the United States -- a sweeping novel of the American South and the War of Independence

In his ambitious and deeply rewarding novel, Jimmy Carter brings to life the Revolutionary War as it was fought in the Deep South; it is a saga that will change the way we think about the conflict. He reminds us that much of the fight for independence took place in that region and that it was a struggle of both great and small battles and of terrible brutality, with neighbor turned against neighbor, the Indians' support sought by both sides, and no quarter asked or given. The Hornet's Nest follows a cast of characters and their loved ones on both sides of this violent conflict -- including some who are based on the author's ancestors.

At the heart of the story is Ethan Pratt, who in 1766 moves with his wife, Epsey, from Philadelphia to North Carolina and then to Georgia in 1771, in the company of Quakers. On their homesteads in Georgia, Ethan and his wife form a friendship with neighbors Kindred Morris and his wife, Mavis. Through Kindred and his young Indian friend Newota, Ethan learns about the frontier and the Native American tribes who are being continually pressed farther inland by settlers. As the eight-year war develops, Ethan and Kindred find themselves in life-and-death combat with oppos- ing forces.

With its moving love story, vivid action, and the suspense of a war fought with increasing ferocity and stealth, The Hornet's Nest is historical fiction at its best, in the tradition of such major classics as The Last of the Mohicans.

                              5 out of 5 stars A great novel by a former U.S. president.......2007-08-04

Obviously the result of years of research, The Hornet's Nest provides a much-needed narrative on the unsung heroes of the revolutionary war--those men living south of the Mason-Dixon line who sacrificed their lives for the revolutionary cause. Based on the experience of former President Jimmy Carter's grandmother, this novel focuses on the war effort in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida from 1773 to 1781. "The hornet's nest" was an area of Georgia around Augusta that was held tenaciously by the rebel forces, even though the rest of Georgia and all of North Carolina and Florida had fallen to the British. I decided to read this book because I've become a fan of Mr. Carter's during his postpresidential career, but I continued to read it because it is compelling and informative. Mr. Carter does an excellent job of portraying just how grim the revolutionary cause was for most of the war, and it was refreshing to read something on the Revolutionary War in a setting other than Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Virginia

4 out of 5 stars Stately, panoramic view of the American Revolution in Georgia.......2007-07-03

I bought this book mostly out of curiosity. As a British subject, I wondered what an ex-President of the USA would have to say about the Revolutionary War nearly 250 years later. In this, I was very pleasantly surprised. Mr Carter combines solid story-telling and characterisation with an utterly reliable neutrality as to the rights and wrongs of the conflict. We are invited into the lives of townspeople, craftsmen, settlers, and soldiers on both sides - "Whigs" and "Tories" as they came to be known - and each person springs to life, complete with utterly convincing beliefs, hopes, desires, and ambitions. What's more, the Native Americans come to life too: revealed not as naked, painted, warlike savages, but human beings just like ourselves, wishing only to continue with their chosen way of life. Certainly, the pace is slow - but that is inevitable if the tale is to be true to life. Whirlwind, slapdash treatments like the movie "The Patriot" are bound to give one-sided, one-dimensional accounts of what was really a classic human tragedy played out over a quarter of a century. Even the most violent of wars is intermittent - a fact that we too easily forget when we read about it later, and at a distance. Mr Carter's profound understanding of politics and military matters helps him to show, rather than tell, the complex interplay of individual motives that lead, first to discontent and repression, then to simmering violence, and finally to open war. Frankly, not everyone has the temperament or the education to read this book with enjoyment; but the more people who do so, the better. Reading "The Hornet's Nest" is like visiting a foreign country that you have read about in guidebooks, but never seen before. It fills in all the little details that the history books leave out, and as a result explains why events took place as they did. It is a substantial literary and civic contribution, and one that few Presidents - or senior politicians of any nation - could hope to rival.

I have always proclaimed the Revolutionary War as my favorite war. Probably because it is the easiest war for me to grasp both the concepts behind it and the strategies of combat. I spent a long period of my childhood on World War II because of the dominance of aircraft, but the concepts and strategies were so much more complex that it is hard to get a big picture on the war. Carter's book about the Revolutionary War does a good job of giving the big picture to the war. I have a better understanding about what life was like during that time of war where families were always on the lookout for danger. What I found inappropriate was the passages of textbook-like descriptions meant to span periods of time. I understand the need for them but it seemed like they just popped up in the middle of a chapter or times when I didn't expect them. They may have worked better as lead ins to new chapters or books.

A very dry flat uninspiring read. When the book (infrequently) takes on a tinge of excitement, the mood is quashed by a lapse into tedious detail. Real science and history texts have held my interest better.

Jimmy Carter has done a great work in bringing a greater depth of understanding to a little understood time in our nation's history. I had lived and traveled in the states of Georgia, North and south Carolina during the early '80s. Carter's book brought much greater insight to what I observed during while I was in those states as well as greater insight to the events leading up to and during the revolutionary war. The beauty, brutality, and perseverance exhibited by union patriots and citizens loyal to the crown was laid out in stark detail. Well written and a good read.
