Book Description
There are now more than three hundred city-regions around the world with populations greater than one million. These city-regions are expanding vigorously, and they present many new and deep challenges to researchers and policy-makers in both the more developed and less developed parts of the world. The processes of global economic integration and accelerated urban growth make traditional planning and policy strategies in these regions increasingly inadequate, while more effective approaches remain largely in various stages of hypothesis and experimentation. Global City-Regions represents a multifaceted effort to deal with the many different issues raised by these developments. It seeks at once to define the question of global city-regions and to describe the internal and external dynamics that shape them; it proposes a theorization of global city-regions based on their economic and political responses to intensifying levels of globalization; and it offers a number of policy insights into the severe social problems that confront global city-regions as they come face to face with an economically and politically neoliberal world. At a moment when globalization is increasingly subject to critical scrutiny in many different quarters, this book provides a timely overview of its effects on urban and regional development, one of its most important (but perhaps least understood) corollaries. The book also offes a series of nuanced visions of alternative possible futures.

Book Description
What would the world of business be like if it were run by the Greek gods of yore? Would Apollo be the right man at the helm of Acme Widget? What sweeping changes would Athena make if she controlled an ad agency? While this might merely seem like an entertaining concept, it also happens to be an extremely valuable framework for understanding management styles and the corporate cultures associated with them. In The Gods of Management, best-selling author Charles Handy uses four Greek gods to illustrate for managers the basic approaches they can use in their own businesses. When power radiates throughout the company from a top boss, that would be an example of a Zeus or "club" organization, one that investment banks and brokerage firms often adopt for their corporate climates. An Apollo "role" culture, on the other hand, results in a stable bureaucracy, such as a life insurance company or a firm with a long history of success with a single product. The Athena "task" environment emphasizes talent, youth, and team problem-solving, as we'd find in ad agencies and consultancies. And lastly, a Dionysius "existential" design exists to let individuals achieve their purposes, as in a university or group medical practice. In this thought-provoking volume, Charles Handy shows managers how to be aware of the cultural choices they can make to create a more productive and satisfying workplace.

The Gods of Management.......2005-08-02
It's really a very interesting book with a new concept and ideas about organization's Culture.
Interesting angle on management.......2005-01-29
This book is a must for anyone considering a serious career in Business or Management. It provides insight on what to look for in groups and how they function as a unit, and the different management styles of corporations, government entities or universities. It will also help to identify which groups you would work best with, and which ones to avoid.
Mesmerizing.......2004-04-12
It was a wonderful idea relate two concepts that seem so far in a book that explores interesting aspects in the dynamics of the management. I've been management years after having read this book and I`ve to recognize the huge help that the text gave me.
A must for those managers who still consider the mythos is just a cultural hobbie.
Wrong choice!
And I hope Mr. Harding you surprise with another book related with similar items.
Thoughtful, literate, insightful, helpful.......2001-06-20
Declaration: I like Charles Handy. I've met him and debated with him, and I've been reading his works from time to time over the last 10 years or so. I like the cut of his jib.
In this book Handy brings a fresh and challenging perspective, and a handful of very powerful and natural conceptual tools, to the business of understanding organisations.
He's also a pleasure to read.
Arguably the most philosophical among all management gurus.......1997-04-12
Many other management thinkers create new models and popularize them as their masterwork. Charles Handy is different. He just reminds us about things that have happened. Greek gods were already part of our civilization. Yet it takes one man like Handy to recognize it and analyze it so creatively

Book Description
The Third International Symposium on Genetics in Aquaculture was held in Trondheim, Norway in June, 1988 with 143 participants. The Institute of Aquaculture Research and the International Association for Genetics in Aquaculture were responsible for arranging the symposium.
The symposium had three sessions with the topics Biotechnology, Breeding plans and New fish species. In the Biotechnology session, gene technology, and immunological aspects of disease resistance were reviewed, and it has been concluded that much knowledge has been accumulated in these fields in recent years and that large inputs in research will be necessary in coming years. With regard to breeding plans, the theoretical basis and the application of breeding schemes are discussed. Good possibilities for obtaining genetic change through breeding programmes have been demonstrated. For the future development of the aquaculture industry it is essential to have domesticated and productive organisms. Problems in farming marine fish species like halibut, cod and wolf-fish are also discussed.

Racing Industry Killed Its Brightest Star; Then Commits Suicide for Next 32 Years.......2007-07-17
What a joke--Ruffian ranked number 35! Whitely stated she was the best ever and he had Forgo in his stable. Laurin said she was greater than Secretariat. Remember the headlines she would beat Secretariat in head-to-head competition? I do. I also remember the industry hailing her as the greatest ever. Certainly one would have to go back to Eclipse to match her past performances. The whole industry hung their hopes of saving racing on her. And she brought legends of new fans to the track. Of course that was before the Great Match Race (one has to wonder what would have been so great about #35 vs #97). After that an industry embarassed by what its own greed had done reverted to making Ruffian the scapegoat for her own death as well as that of the industry. They also reverted to their old sexist ways. As a result they have been trying to destroy and belittle the legacy of this great horse (do you see her monument at KHP?). Sad thing is the racing industry never understood what brought her fans to the track. It had nothing to do with gambling (no one would get rich given her odds) but everything thing to do with a love of beauty and an appreciation of sheer perfection. Of course, no one expected the show of tremendous heart, courage and determination she exhibited in the match race. That made her immoral to her fans and proved an added embarassment to the industry. If ever the industry would give Ruffian her just due, they just might see her type of fans return to the tracks (and related sites such as KHP) in legend.
Interesting Debate Topic.......2007-05-19
A kindly rebuttal of the Secretariat bashing taking place by some reviewers. 16 victories in 21 career starts, record time in all three Triple Crown Races (his Preakness time was properly edited in 1999 representing the record). As for Hawkster who ran 1 1/2 mile in 2:22 2/5 on TURF in 1989 at Santa Anita on what the announcer described as an "unusually fast surface" (check YouTube), shows the adominable nature of 2:24 in the Belmont. No horse has come within 9 legnths of Secretariat's run in 73' on the dirt. I agree that Secretariat was not the greatest horse in racing history but on that day in 1973 at Belmont Park, he would have obliterated any other horse in the proud history of the sport of kings. Buy the book however and let the debate begin. We have been led to believe that the greatest horses travelled the dusty track in the 1970's, I believe this book challenges that assumption quite well.
Dark Tiger.......2007-02-25
I loved this book. Man O' War is indeed the greatest. There was one thing wrong though. Ruffian is ten times greater then Secretariat! She should be number two!!!! By the way, Kali. Man O' War had 3 world records!! Sec only had two. Get your facts straight before making a comment like that. Also, Sec was always let out while Man O' War never was!!!!!!!!!!!
Not Thorough Enough.......2007-01-07
In my view it is ridiculous to choose a horse to be numero uno if none of the staff ever saw him run. And I was dismayed that they voted for the way overrated Secretariat as second place. When he was three, he lost 3 stakes races out of 12 starts with no excuse (a 75% win record). Many horses in the top twenty had better percentages. And Kali, they, too, set speed records (Swaps has several to his record, so does Spectacular Bid). As Ben Jones said "Time only counts when you are in jail". Contrary to what you wrote, Man o' War broke many speed records in his day. The problem is that speed records are meant to be broken, and they are constantly. Even Secretariat's phenomenal 2:24 in the Belmont has been broken (2:22 and a fraction by a good horse named Hawkster).
In my view, Citation should be number one instead of number three for many reasons. It's almost impossible to compare horses from two different eras, but Citation was Man 0' War's equal in many respects. If he had been retired after his third year, he would have had a lifetime record of 29 starts with 27 wins and two excusable seconds. No horse in the book comes close to that. Against older horses (neither Secretariat or Man o' War raced against older horses as many times as Citation did).
Well, enough of that. The bios of the horses vary in quality, from average to very good. The photos are wonderful though, some even in color. I agree that the fillies are given short shrift here, and some should be much more highly ranked than they are.
But if you are a racing fan, this is a fun book to have. You can re-rank the horses to your own liking. I have.

Handy Pocket Reference To Most Used Terms.......2006-07-05
This is a handy resource for many of the terms used in oil & gas deals. It is useful as a quick reference when talking details of a deal over the phone or out on the field. It's small size makes it easy to tuck into a hip or jacket pocket. If you own Mr. Orban's other book, "Money In The Ground", you'll find most terms listed there as well.
Book Description
Junk English 2 combines basic advice — peppered with contemporary examples of alarmingly common verbal atrocities — with entertaining invective. Based on the author's uncounted hours of exposure to infomercials, ads, and other dubious cultural forms, the book covers topics like "parasitic intensifiers," "-ize verbs," and the dreaded "weasel words." "Useless cabooses" — as well as frequently abused words like "focus," "factor," and "process" — are examined and put in their proper place, as are the seemingly unstoppable impulses toward vagueness and euphemisms. Written so that the ordinary writer and speaker of English can readily see the manipulations of language, especially in the post-9/11 era, Junk English 2 is useful as a quick reference, a source for further exploration, and a fun read. The book is arranged alphabetically, like a dictionary, providing a compendium of frequently abused words and suggested alternates.
Customer Reviews:
A worthy sequal.......2006-01-09
Have you ever listened to an advertisement, politician, or pundit and wondered, "Is that even a word?" English is an ever-evolving language, however, like organic evolution, some things just don't work. Ken Smith eagerly points out these detrimental mutations of the English language. While the book is a pleasurable and informative read, Mr. Smith can be a bit pretentious and politically biased with his examples.
