A helpful Introduction.......2001-12-27
It's difficult to fault a book compiled from other author's articles, except maybe how the book is organized. But Globalization and the Challenges of the New Century : A Reader is not only useful, but topical. The discussion starts with Huntington's now oft-and-overquoted essay, "The Clash of Civilizations?", and moves to Barber and Kaplan. Later, some other luminaries appear, but the strength of the collection is the depth of arguments by not-so famous authors. Also, the volume breaks globalization into it's political, economic, technological, and cultural aspects, something that seemingly perplexes most people, because their arguments pass too quickly and easily between all of them. There is so much here to read, but, perhaps, some more information for more reading would be useful. This book provides a useful start for those looking for an interesting and rigorous look at what can become an empty slogan at dinner-parties and coffee breaks.
Great Primer.......2000-11-20
The Economist described the book this way and I agree completely, "If you want to catch up on some of the best articles written about globalisation since the topic became fashionable several years ago, this reader is the place to start."

Book Description
A GOOD PRIMER FOR PARTNERS IN INNOVATION
Since its publication in 1997, Collaborative Creativity continues to be a useful resource for people in the early phases of their learning about making innovation possible. Formatted for easy reading in 72 very brief (1-3 page)essays, author Jack Ricchiuto makes the creative process accessible and collaboration achievable.
This is a good read before going on to the many other great books on creativity and innovation in business out today. Authors like Michalko, Wykoff, Leonard, de Bono, Bennis, Von Oech, and Peters do a good job providing tools and techniques that take you beyond the introduction presented here.
This has proven to be one of the ones to start with.
In Collaborative Creativity, you will explore questions like:
Can creativity and innovation be intentionally cultivated -- or are they simply a matter of genes or luck?
How is the creative process critical to the development of innovations?
What gets in the way of creativity & innovation?
What does it take to be more collaborative in the creative process?
How can organizations become more innovative about how they innovate?

Buy it!.......2000-04-22
As the author of "Thinkertoys (A Handbook of Business Creativity)" and "Cracking Creativity (The Secrets of Creativity Genius)," I rarely recommend books about creative thinking, because, after all they compete with my books. With this book, I must make an exception. It's a superb book on brainstorming. If you want to become more creative in your business and personal life, buy this book. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
Wonderful Resource for Creative Teams.......2000-02-21
Collaborative Creativity is a wonderful resource for leaders of creative teams. The book is a great read for managers, providing an introduction to the creative process and tips on how to enable the creative process in your organization. Ricchiuto's "Idea Garden" offers practical examples to help managers identify pitfalls to creativity.
Collaborative Creativity is an insightful resource. Members of my creative staff found the book to be a catalyst for brainstorming sessions on how to improve the flow of ideas and creativity in our large, nonprofit organization.
Collaborative Creativity is a concise, practical introduction to the creative process.
Creativity Unleashed.......2000-01-11
As a marketing professional for the past 15 years, I am always looking for innovative and exciting ideas. Jack Ricchiuto's "Collaborative Creativity" offers beginners and seasoned professionals with new ideas that have proven successful in my workplace. The "idea garden" and "random words" are two tools that haved worked for me and my staff, and at the same time are fun to use. I was introduced to this book through an Executive MBA program and know that my classmates too, have found the power from "Collaborative Creativity."
Subtract a star if you have read anything else on creativity.......1999-12-23
At best, half this book directly involves collaboration. The half that doesn't is handled in a much more interesting way by Mike Michalko and others in the field. Also, to say that there are 72 essays is very misleading- many of these 'essays' are three paragraphs long and one is only three sentances. There are some good things in here, and Ricchiuto is probably a very good consultant, but I have to agree with the reviewer who said most of it is not really very new.
Great intro for innovators.......1999-12-07
This is a great introduction to creativity and innovation for individuals, teams, and leaders. It is a refreshingly upbeat take on the creative process--highly recommended.

Does Freud still have something to teach us? The premise of this volume is that he most certainly does. Approaching Freud from not only the philosophical but also historical, psychoanalytical, anthropological, and sociological perspectives, the contributors show us how Freud gave us a new and powerful way to think about human thought and action. They consider the context of Freud's thought and the structure of his arguments to reveal how he made sense of ranges of experience generally neglected or misunderstood. All the central topics of Freud's work from sexuality and neurosis to morality, art, and culture are covered.

Confusing..........2000-04-13
It's a regular book about Freud , but it's very complex and confusing and NOT recommended for begginers. It's not a good source of information about Freud himself it's focused on his ideas instead. The information is fragmented and is placed in a strange sequence.

A Beautiful Little Gem!.......2000-12-04
My wife and I were given a copy of this pretty little book as a gift several years ago. We like it as much for the beautiful paintings and drawings (done by the author) as for the large amount of information it contains. The paintings are typically full page, colors well reproduced, and size large enough to show accurate details of the flower parts. These are really works of art.
This book doesn't cover all wildflowers, but does a great job helping us to identify and enjoy spring/early summer wildflowers in the northeast.
Judging by the Amazon ranking of sales of the book, it isn't particularly well known. That's understandable, given that it was published by a university press (Ohio University) 24 years ago. But in my opinion, it's one of those little gems to keep and pass on to your children. The price is very reasonable for a good quality hardcover book with this kind of content.
In a foreword to the book, the Director of the Denver Botanic Gardens refers to its "soundly scientific base". Sounds good to me. I'm not a botanist (I'm a retired engineer), but I do like the amount of information giveen on each plant. I especially like being given the origin of every one of those funny-sounding quasi-Latin names, along with pronunciation aids.
Because the written information is always on page facing the (usually) full page illustration of each flower, I don't have to thumb through the book looking for the picture. I do find myself having to refer often to the glossary of botanical terms at the back of the book, but that's relatively easy to do, and a fair price to pay for the extra information in the descriptions.
Book Description
For serious motorcyclists, riding is a hobby as well as a way of life, and the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, is the ultimate destination. The Sturgis rally, which draws half a million participants a year, is as much about the journey as the destination. Author Jim Casey starts out with a comprehensive history of American bikers from Marlon Brando to the Hell's Angels, then traces the evolution of the rally, its Harley-Davidson connection, and its unique cultural contribution to the lore of the American road. With more than 50 full-color photos, this book will appeal to both armchair adventurers and real-life bikers.

An insider look at Sturgis--with great pictures.......2005-07-01
This book is awesome. I highly recommend it--even if you don't like motorcycles. The story that Casey tells puts the reader right at the scene with the narrator. Casey's narrator is both funny and sweet and really brings the Sturgis story home. Plus, the pictures are incredible.
Book Description
Designed as a naturalist's sketch book (with a genuine dewback hide cover) and featuring the meticulous illustrations of Star Wars' artist Terryl Whitlatch, The Wildlife of Star Wars is truly the definitive guide to the creatures of George Lucas's mega creation. With simple pen and ink, the artist captures the unusual anatomy, the extraordinary behavior, and the rainbow hues of the most interesting wildlife on Naboo, Hoth, Endor, and the other planets of Star Wars. Detailed field notes scrawled in the margins describe the mysterious graveyard of the banthas, the mating patterns of the prolific female shaaks, the skittish nature of the rontos, and how the eopies spit stomach contents when irritated. Thorough, precise, and totally entertaining, The Wildlife of Star Wars is the reference book to the nonsentient inhabitants of this galaxy. While the reader can't hear the booming thunder of the bantha stampede or smell the rancid breath of the bellowing falumpaset, he or she can observe these creatures as they exist in their strange and wonderful homes, in a galaxy far, far away.

Really great book.......2007-10-11
I love this book. It's particular combination of pretty art and extraodinary imagination make this a book a great colectionist article for every Star Wars fan.
great book for all ages.......2007-05-16
Although this is another starwars art book, it is a great book in and of itself. The artwork is amazing as well as well thought out and researched. I have shared the book with many including children who are fascinated and inspired by the animals and environments within. This book is a great buy for artists looking for inspirational work.
Good, but..........2007-05-15
This is an awesome book for Star Wars movie lovers, but I'm a completely engrossed Star Wars fan who looks on Wookieepedia, and I expected a bit more than this. It's got all the things movie-goers would love, but I just wish it had more on wildlife from other planets than what's provided. I'd have liked some Yuuzhan Vong wildlife, some Ithorian creatures, and maybe an article on tarentatek or vornskrs, fascinating as they are. It just needs a little more outside the movies.
Great book! Interesting and Inventive.......2007-01-04
I bought this book over 5 years ago when it first came out. I saw it at a local bookstore and had to have it! If you enjoy speculative zoology -- Dougal Dixon, Wayne Barlowe, "The World of Kong" (2005)-- then you will definitely want this volume. Even those who aren't Star Wars fans will appreciate the creative artwork and thought given to creating these fantastic alien environments and creatures.
Wildlife of Star Wars - Absolutely Wild!!!.......2006-05-17
If you are a true Star Wars Fan,.. this book will blow your mind!!!!! It is a must buy!!!! The information in this book about the creatures of the Star Wars Galaxy is amazning!! This book is creative, inciteful, informative and entertaining!!!! I love it!!! The only downside is that this book doesn't include the creatures from Episode II and III. I would've love to see what planets the Aklay, Reek and Nexu come from. Either way,.. I strongly recommend purchasing this book!!!

Book Description
With its down and dirty depiction of warfare written by men who know what it’s like to be under fire, the Starfist saga is a runaway success across America. Now, in the explosive new Starfist adventure, packed with fierce action and danger, Marines at war in future space find themselves pitted against a faceless, insatiable foe bent on destroying them. And that’s just for starters.
How bad is the upcoming mission facing the battle-hardened Marines of 34th Fleet Initial Strike Team (FIST), the military’s unofficial alien first-contact force? Bad enough to make the brass take the unprecedented step of issuing 34th FIST replacements for combat losses before the Marines even leave their home base.
In response to a series of unexplained deaths on a lonely outpost on the frontiers of human space, 34th FIST has been dispatched to investigate–and eradicate– the problem. Beyond that, the information available to Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Bass and his men is meager even by Marine standards. No one knows what awaits them, for the newly colonized world remains largely unexplored. That means 34th FIST can expect creatures they have never seen, or even heard of, much less trained for. It could be Skink acid shooters, could be anything, for the barren station has several secrets–all of them deadly.
But the last thing these Marines expect to find is themselves in the middle of an invasion and a mysterious war–with none other than 34th FIST as Enemy #1. Whatever happens, they’ll deal with it, because they’re Marines, determined to be ready . . . and to give worse than they get.

A Must read for Military SF fans.......2007-09-30
Wow. This series has culminated (so far) in the best plot line yet. Not only do the authors give the reader a genuine feel for war, but they also give the reader a professional analysis of current strategies in current wars we could name. Since both are Military vets, their opinions count for much more than pogues whose ideas of strategy originated the term "cluster-fu*k", which is what is going on right now (in real life). A damning accessment, and an accurate one, not to mention an action packed, edge of the seat adventure with our favorate characters, and new ones that deserve what they get. I have every book in this series, and will buy any new ones as soon as they are published, they are really that good! Meanwhile, anyone who is currently overseas must read this whole series! Then Vote!
Boring. Poor writing. Skip it.......2007-04-08
On a whole I really liked the Starfist series but I guess every series has its clunkers, this is one. There are times when reading the series I find that one of the characters figure out part of the plot and they just ignore it in the context of the story. Example is the Skinks don't show up on well Infrared scans. Well, that info just sits around and none of the marines seem to tell any of the other marines that very important info. Leaving them to discover it on there own. Also along that line with the presumed technology why not use ultra violet or some other light wave sensors? This plot point ignorance come to a peak in this tenth installment of the Starfist series. Near the beginning of this story about a quarter the way in they tell you what they suspect might be the cause of the "Skink" like attacks. But the authors have the charters never revisit or do anything about it until much later in the book, even when it is extremely obvious to the read what the cause is. It seems the authors just want us to have blinders on to the plot point they revealed early on in the story and act like the obvious reason should be ignored.
Bottom-line this book was a bore and the only reason to read it is that it continues on the series story line. A very poor effort, poor plot, poor editing. One that you can skip.
And Now for Completely Different..........2005-10-09
It seems like the skinks are back and the men of the 34th will have to face them again so they ship out ready to rock and roll. Things are not, however, as they seem. If I said any more, I'd be giving away vitals so I won't. There is, however, an additional enemy.
We are introduced to Admiral of the Starry Heavens Orange, the supreme naval commander of the We're Here! Navy. We're Here! is a bush league planet settled early on by a bunch of hippies. His supporting characters include Admirals Toke, Head and Crashpad. Captain Happiness is also along for the ride. Admiral Orange gets it into his head that he needs to go to war with another planet and, not incidentally, the Confederation Marines. It's a comic opera that is hilarious in its ludicrous nature.
It's a relaxation break in the series.
It could have been a contender!.......2005-06-06
Overall this series is quite good. As a former Marine, I've found that the authors do a bang-up job of recalling long-forgotten memories of service and sacrifice. They've managed to combine snappy action and plotting with well-realized characters. Characters (such as Charlie Bass) who's fate we deeply care about.
That being said, "A World of Hurt," the tenth and latest in the "Starfist" series is a distinct disappointment. After the last two books in the series, "Kingdom's Fury" and "Lazarus Rising," we had the chance to really get to know several of the main characters: Charlie Bass, Lew Conorado, Brigadier Sturgeon, Cpl. Doyle, etc. They really came alive and of course there was the entire subplot with the supposed death and disappearance of Bass on Kingdom.
This was a major story arc, with the Marines grieving terribly at his "loss." However, his return from the dead is barely mentioned or explored in this novel. His promotion to officer status was similarly glossed over. It would have been quite interesting to have seen the reaction of the Marines to his return, rather than the matter of fact acceptance of his miraculous, "Lazarus" like revival. Or failing that, I would have enjoyed seeing the internal conflicts that Bass experienced as he assumed his new role of officer rather than enlisted man. They were hinted at in some of the throwaway lines in the book but nothing more. The Bass storyline is but one example of many that could have been fleshed out in this book.
Overall, it seems that the authors simply phoned this one in. Especially telling is the excruciating detail with which everyday activities are described. For Heaven's sake! If readers have been with the Marines of the 34th FIST to this point then they don't need to read the line "fast ride on a rough road" one more time. Ugh.
Here's hoping that the next installment serves to advance the overall story rather than serving as a placeholder.
Where's the action?.......2005-03-04
This book started well with Gunny Bass returning to the 34th FIST but it trails off from there. There was very little combat and when there was, it was very sporadic.
The dialogue and the innards of the Marine relationships was outstanding as always, but I felt that the perspectives were too diluted. The point of view seemed to come from every single fire team leader, squad leader, platoon leader. It made the whole story, well boring.
I would have given it 3 stars but I've also compared it with the other books in the series and that is why I've dropped it down to 2 stars.
I will continue to read this book because I feel a major conflict brewing between the 34th FIST and the SKINKS.
