A must for knowledge workers!.......2003-05-05
This book should be 'the bible' for everyone involved in knowledge management processes. Holland, as one of the complexity theory founders, decribes the essentials of how complex adaptive rules, in relation to the variability of the environment, determine knowledge dynamics and learning capabilities.
Key message of the book is the way that processes of induction, both cognitive and subcognitive, determine rule making, rule adaptation and environment modeling.
With this work Holland (et al.) was the first to close the gap between cognition, complex adaptive systems and knowledge processing. He also provides a sound computational base for the theories presented, opening possibilities for implementation of 'the induction theory' in real world applications.

This book is a complete manual of racing tactics, crew training and pre-race preparation. It covers everything you need to know to get ahead of the competition and train your crew to be happy and highly competitive. I highly recommend this book for skippers and crew alike.
Port tack, anyone?.......2006-11-03
This is a very interesting book with plenty of insight into real sailboat racing. Where I race, everyone is so polite that no one is nudged over the starting line and everyone gets plenty of room. This book describes full contact sailboat racing. It's not for wimps. But it makes a good case that most races are won or lost before the race ever starts. The writers stress the importance of preparation and planning, two qualities we casual weekend racers usually lack. It has certainly improved my understanding of sailboat racing. I hope I can put it all into practice.

I think my review title says it all. I tried to come up with a way of summarizing the material in this 350 page book, and couldn't. There was too much!
Jobson and Whidden, two world class sailors, packed each chapter full of information--well may not the first chapter--that was short. But the rest of them were long, detailed and packed to the gills with important information.
If you race and don't read this book, you will probably not do as well as someone who has read the book. It is that simple.
This book is for aspiring racers who want to improve their standings in the fabulous sport of sailboat racing. Are you ready to race and win? Are you ready to learn?
What I liked best about the book was its organization. Look at the index below and you will get a hint of what I mean. But you will have to buy the book or thumb through it to really understand what I mean.
I liked the emphasis on teamwork, communication, and leadership, which I find under-emphasized in other books I've read.
Great information is provided on the winds in different parts of the country. Read the section on your sailing area and any place you race.
This is not a one night read of a book. Plan on spending lots of time with this book reading it, and re-reading, and applying it to improve your on the race course performance.

A mix of insight and the superficial.......2007-08-09
The book is enjoyable and takes a light-hearted approach, often playing on the average person's perception of spies. This means a lot of references to James Bond and gadgetry. However the real content of the book is based in some beginning human intelligence skills, like improving your memory, being more aware of your surroundings and danger, and profiling people and their temperments.
I found most useful the discussion on using the Myers-Briggs personality test as a basis for profiling people and trying to predict their behaviors. Also intriguing was the section on Dale Carnegie as a "master spymaster" because he understood how to influence people; a nice connection made by the author, going to the core of how espionage is mostly based on human interaction and not gadgetry.
While some of these basics were worthwhile, I was distracted and disappointed with the constant effort to loop everything back to James Bond. The book really assumes the reader knows nothing more about espionage than watching Bond films, and it tries to be funny by talking about using "that James Bond charm" or "Q's gadgets" to get out of sticky situations. The effort to lighten the mood was mishandled because as much as the author tries to be funny he is just not a comedy writer and his jokes are lame.
I would regard this book as light on content and more of an entertainment book. It does have a few basic tips that are insightful.
One of my favorite books........2007-02-17
I use the concepts in this book every day. As a spy, it is imperative to remember the ideas presented in this book for recruiting, questioning, and handling agents and spying on others in general. And if you are not a spy, this book is great for assessing situations, acting on your instincts, and getting into the VIP section of that awesome restaurant so you won't be stuck in the rain waiting for that girl who stood you up.

I loved this book. It was entertaining and informative. The book is as smart as it is good looking. There isn't too much information, but the right amount to go on. Improving your spy skills improves your general life skills.
Eye-catching format that packs a punch with useful information.......2005-12-25
At first glance, this compact black, white, and red paperback looks like it could be another gimmicky book along the lines of the later Worst Case Scenario books. Delving beneath the surface, however, the reader will discover some useful information about how to act like a spy (act like you belong, behave purposefully, blend in, develop your assessment skills, trust your instinct and analyze later, and more), how to improve your memory and become more observant, how to ingratiate strangers, how to maneuver in a danger zone, anti-theft measures, and so on. You don't have to want to be a cloak-and-dagger/trenchcoat spy to use this book to glean some useful tips about human behavior and getting the information you want from others.
A Good Place to Start.......2005-09-06
The Practical Handbook of Spying is a short, simple book on some basic techniques of intelligence work. It's not a comprehensive manual; instead it covers areas useful to the general reader.
It's written in an easy, mildly amusing manner similar to the `Dummies' series of books. I originally wasn't impressed and almost sent it back, but after re-reading it a month later, I saw that there were nuggets of good information hidden under the superficial layer of humor. The book's introduction by former CIA agent Peter Earnest is excellent.
Another good thing; because it's only 184 small pages, there isn't as much padding and verbiage as in other books.
This isn't a CIA agent's manual, but perhaps the book a CIA agent would give someone interested in the subject. Useful for all ages.

Really good but..........2007-09-17
This book is very thorough. Perhaps even too thorough? I found the book a really solid study. Two things - lack of pastoral insights and lack of Hebrew - keep me from giving it 5 stars. Let me address the 2nd point - he transliterates the Hebrew text rather than actually using a Hebrew font. Seriously, a two volume commentary on Proverbs that is intensely intersted in subtle nuances of Hebrew and then uses only transliteration? I find myself having to translate Waltke back into Hebrew in order to find where he's going in the text.
Essentially, it's an excellent book, yet more difficult than it needs to be on this point.
Review of Waltke's Commentary on Proverbs.......2006-03-31
Bruce Waltke's commentary on Proverbs (2 vols.) provides indepth linguistic and theological insights into the text. We often read the individual proverbs as simply neat insights into life. The proverbs can be much more than this, though. The proverbs are the product of community reflection upon biblical teaching and everyday life. Waltke's treatment of the text helps the reader to look deeply into the use of specific words, including how they are used in other OT passages, and into the deeper theological meaning. I highly recommend both volumes.
Since this is a 2 volume treatment, there is sometimes more information than a reader might want. For a briefer treatment, but one that is also very helpful, I recommend Dave Bland's commentary on Proverbs published by College Press (Bland's text also includes Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs).
The Definitive Evangelical Commentary on Proverbs.......2005-06-03
Bruce Waltke is an outstanding OT scholar, and one of the most respected. This 2 volume commentary on Proverbs is exhaustive and scholarly.
Waltke displays a brilliant command of OT narrative structures throughout this commentary. The average person picking up a Bible and reading Proverbs can easily conclude that Proverbs is little more than an extensive list of random sayings devoid of any real order or structure. Not so. Waltke repeatedly demonstrates how the chiastic structures that are found all over the place in Proverbs provide great order and reveal deep insights into what the writer was doing. Waltke's command of wisdom literature as a literary genre is also impressive, and adds "wisdom" to his commentary.
One can certainly read Proverbs and gain many insights without reading Waltke's commentary. But Waltke does a fantastic job in showing the structure of Proverbs and how its contents integrate with the rest of the Bible, particularly the OT. Waltke labored over this commentary for years, and the painstaking scholarship that went along with this is obvious from cover to cover. While a working knowledge of Hebrew would be a big help in digesting this commentary, even those with no training in the Hebrew language can still profit from the many insights Waltke provides. Pastors in particular should get this commentary, even pastors who aren't Hebrew scholars. Proverbs is a profound but too often misunderstood book. Waltke provides reliable and insightful guidance to the pastor who wants to responsibly preach out of Proverbs with the desire to edify his flock. Highly recommended.
The Wisdom of Proverbs.......2004-12-18
As a young preacher, I recently began preaching through the book of Proverbs; this book was pointed out to me, and it has been an invaluable aid since I purchased it.
Waltke demonstrates that he has thought long and passionately about God's book of wisdom. He brings to the reader solid exegesis, wide personal reading, and (most importantly) a belief in what the Bible says.
Although it may be too technical for those wanting an introductory commentary (you might do better looking at Derek Kidner's Tyndale contribution), Waltke's work will, on my bookshelf, set the standard for Proverbs commentaries.
...Can't wait until the second volume is published!
