    Book Description

The objective of the second volume of the Handbook of Telecommunications Economics is to highlight the economic aspects of the evolution of communications technologies beyond the basic fixed-line telephony infrastructure that was covered in Volume 1. In that book, structural, regulatory and competition policy issues with respect to a well-known technology were covered. Yet, technological options have increased in a quantum manner. Fuelled by the creativity of entrepreneurs and policy-makers world wide, it is safe to infer that a process of creative destruction is well underway. Volume 2 covers the major technological developments and tracks the changes in these developments linking them to the ways that both communications can take place and that institutions and policies can evolve. Written by world leading scholars in a manner that will be appreciated by a wide audience of academics and professionals, the fifteen detailed reviews that make up this book provide an academic perspective on these contemporary changes.

          Book Description

Despite the scale of change in agricultural methods in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, farmland birds were little affected, with many benefiting from the appearance of extensive new resources. This book is an historical account of the impact of changes in farming methods on the bird populations of British farmland over the past 250 years. A comparison with modern experience shows significant differences, with the more recent changes in grassland management, herbicide use and harvesting methods leading to a loss of diversity in farmland and, consequently, resulting in steep declines in bird numbers.

            Book Description

Christiana Morgan was an erotic muse who influenced twentieth-century psychology and inspired its male creators, including C. G. Jung, who saw in her the quintessential "anima woman." Here Claire Douglas offers the first biography of this remarkable woman, exploring how Morgan yearned to express her genius yet sublimated it to spark not only Jung but also her own lover Henry A. Murray, a psychologist who with her help invented the thematic apperception test (TAT). Douglas recounts Morgan's own contributions to the study of emotions and feelings at the Harvard Psychological Clinic and vividly describes the analyst's turbulent life: her girlhood in a prominent Boston family; her difficult marriage; her intellectual awakening in postwar New York; her impassioned analysis with Jung, including her "visions" of a woman's heroic quest, many of which furthered his work on archetypes; her love affairs and experiences with sexual experimentation; her alcoholism; and, finally, her tragic death.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Jungian American Feminism.......2003-03-29

Translate this Darkness is an unevenly argued book that one cannot decide is about how dangerous men are to women or how dangerous women are to themselves, or how dangerous life is to the living.

While on the one hand author Claire Douglas describes her heroine, Christiana Morgan, in sympathetic terms almost exclusively, Carl Jung's and Henry Murray's influence on Mrs. Morgan is seen as predominantly destructive. Their general existence in her life -- as father figures, as receivers of her endlessly extolled beauty and erotic influence -- is seen as parasitic. They are all 'round exploitative conquerors of the feminine mystique

One cannot help but simply exclaim out loud at several points in the book, especially during the epilogue, what a load of hypocritical American feminist rubbish it is. Why doesn't Christiana just leave Murray, find someone else, and write something in her own right. Jung's 'women', after all, did not need his permission to write and create and have lives of their own.

Douglas claims that these men somehow did not allow Morgan to take responsibility for her own life. Her famous visions, painted by her, and the subject of a four-and-a-half year seminar by Jung in the 1930s (which Douglas has edited, published by Princeton) are considered by Douglas to be of biblical importance to the women of the world. Rather than being used to further an understanding of the feminine by Morgan, these visions were expropriated by Jung for his own supposedly deluded purposes, and were "feared" by Murray as they represented an overwhelming feminine "power" that must be thwarted, lest he lose his own masculine power to it.

First Jung: for the great part of Morgan's life he was simply 3,000 miles away in another part of the world, after the age of 50 making use of Morgan's visions as he made use of so much other diverse literature that influenced his ideas. To say that he unjustly "bent" Morgan's visions to satisfy his own theory of archetypes, thereby damaging Christiana Morgan's soul, becomes irreconcilable when one considers Douglas's statement that these visions also helped Jung to develop those theories (should have been good for her soul, no?)

Wolfgang Pauli's dreams and visions served the same purpose for Jung (see the book Atom and Archetype). Pauli, it may be argued, also lived a life of relatively unrealized potential. He had bouts of alcoholism as did Morgan, and died relatively young, but no one would think to lay this at Jung's feet, perhaps because Pauli was a man and had won a Nobel prize. Morgan was just a poor uneducated girl with a lot of potential that was subsumed by the power of male masculinity and not allowed to be realised into some Golden Flower, if we are to believe the thesis.

Now Murray: he was influenced by Jung to take Christiana as a mistress. This is because Murray was already married, as was Morgan. So it's a tough call who's at fault here. If it was a man's influence that has again ruined the life of yet another woman, blaming Murray for being the wrong man begs the question that there is probably a right man. If the answer is that there should be no man and that Morgan could have gone it alone with strength and conviction, why didn't she, if she had so much "power"? Perhaps she was not so powerful, after all, and certainly without Jung, her visions would not have seen the light of day, as they were "visioned" with his encouragement.

We are left simply with a melodrama of Jungian proportion, an analysis that has been terminated prematurely through the exhaustion and limitations of the two participants. Douglas comes in to pronounce that the unjust winners are still the men and losers the women, in the process ignoring or misrepresenting the success of the women in Jung's circle, and smarter women everywhere.

Men are once again back to being faulted for wanting something from women. To make something out of a mass of visions which would in another time and place be considered certifiable, is not enough. It remains with feminism that it must be the cake and the eating of it, too, something which, if Ms. Douglas would only admit, Jung and Murray were simply not able to have with the impunity she implies, and, therefore, not at all.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of catfishing.......2002-02-25

This book offers a great overview of the four most common types of freshwater catfish (channels, blues, flatheads, and bullheads) and the methods used to catch them. The author also covers the different bodies of water where catfish can be found, and different techniques for fishing these bodies of water. Sutton also goes into great detail about different catfish baits, tackle, and rigs. If you already know a lot about catfishing and want to learn more, this book isn't for you, however, if you want to learn the basics of several different methods of catfishing, I highly reccomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know..........2000-10-07

...about finding, fishing for and even eating catfish appears in Keith Sutton's excellent Fishing for Catfish. Sutton edits Arkansas Wildlife magazine and is a well-known outdoors writer and photographer with other books to his credit. This book opens with an introduction to catfish of all sizes from around the world, then settles into the real heart of the matter--understanding where catfish live, what they like to eat, and the best ways to rig up your tackle and catch them all--from 12-inch bullheads to 100-pound flatheads. You'll find advice on hooks, sinkers, rods and reels, varieties of live and so-called "grocery-store" baits and recipes for homemade stinkbaits so obnoxious that only a catfish will love them. Sutton even teaches his readers how to clean their catch and cook it to perfection--Fishing for Catfish covers everything from the first thought--"I think I'll go fishing"--to the last one ("What a great dinner!"). The best testimonial I know is from a friend, an avowed bass and crappie angler who'd never targeted catfish in more than half a century of fishing. After he read Sutton's book, he bought a new rod worthy of big catfish and used Sutton's advice on the Arkansas River near his home--and caught fish the very first time out.

                      Book Description

The hugely popular Starfist saga featuring Marines at war in outer space is the only military science fiction series written by real combat vets: David Sherman and Dan Cragg. Now comes the explosive hardcover debut of this series–packed with hell-torn action and blazing adventure.

In their fiercest combat yet, the hard-charging Marines of 34th Fleet Initial Strike Team (FIST) have finally won their battle against a full-scale alien invasion of planet Kingdom. But victory over these savage enemies comes at a terrible price, especially for the Marines of Company L’s decimated third platoon. The leader these men would follow into hell itself–Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Bass–was consumed in a fiery ambush that obliterated everything but his dog tags and a few scraps of DNA.

On planet Kingdom, citizens try to return to some semblance of normalcy as the military conducts patrols to search out and destroy any remaining alien Skinks. The old government of squabbling religious leaders has been replaced by a ruthless new regime. All power rests with Dominic de Tomas, a depraved despot who will stoop to any means to achieve his vile ends. His reign of terror bodes ill for the fragile planet still reeling from the chaos of war.

In a cave in some forgotten Kingdom backwater, several humans slowly regain consciousness. Their minds have been probed repeatedly . . . by whom and for what reason they cannot say, for they’ve been stripped of all memories of themselves and their past lives. In time wounds will heal, but who knows if they will ever fully recover.

For now, finding food and water takes precedence. And so these half-dead outcasts begin a journey into the unknown–in search of civilization, in search of themselves. And one survivor’s journey will take him to places of overwhelming danger, where his identity will be revealed to the shock of all.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Series.......2005-09-25

The ninth book of the StarFIST has very little to do with the 34th StarFIST. Instead, it has much to do with the most celebrated marine of that unit, Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Bass. Two books ago he was ambushed while on patrol and presumed dead. Now he is back and his unit has left him behind on the planet of Kingdom. There are no credible threats from Skinks anymore but that is made up for by the threat from the bloodthirsty planetary government based on the worst of the Nazis. It's one very capable marine against a planet of neo-nazis. The bad guys are going to lose bigtime.

This is an exciting book with plenty of unexpected twists. I think it is the best of the series so far.

                      3 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2005-03-14

I love this series and have read them from the beginning. This one, however, was something of a disappointment. The first 7/8 of the book consists of build-up to what can only be described as the anticlimactic climax! When you have a thoroughly evil villain doing all sorts of unspeakable things throughout the last 2 books, one hopes for something more of a comeuppance than "bang, he died."

The book is well written but, given that it's not Dostoevsky, could definitely have used more action and less plotline!

5 out of 5 stars A Turn For the Worse.......2004-01-21

Lazarus Rising (2003) is the ninth novel in the StarFIST series, following Kingdom's Fury. In the previous volume, the 34th FIST, reinforced by the 26th FIST, had driven the Skinks off Kingdom and followed them to Quagmire. There the Gundar Bay, their troopship, attacked a Skink warship and drove it away from the planet, leaving enemy soldiers on the planet. The 34th dropped on Quagmire and the Gundar Bay returned to Kingdom with the 26th FIST to preclude another assault there. The 34th, with a little help from the hexapod natives, crushed the Skink forces on Quagmire and the two FISTs returned to their bases.

Meanwhile, on Kingdom, Dominic de Tomas had charged the members of the Ecumenical Council with profiteering and treason, seized control of the government, and executed all the theocrats. On a worldwide broadcast, he declared the defeat of the Skinks and announced his actions against the Council. Then he promised to present a new constitution and called upon everybody to start rebuilding their lives. It was a short and effective speech.

In this novel, Kingdom refugees are straggling back to their homes, unsure whether the "demons" will return or not. Kingdom forces are still searching for the Skinks and sometimes finding them in vaguely seen animals and even humans. Lieutenant Ben Loman thinks he finds the demons and wipes out a group of primitive humans, with one exception. Later he thinks he finds Skinks in a remote village and attacks a group of settlers, but this time he loses a reconnaissance car and its crew.

One group of refugees awakes within an iron cage in a Skink compound, bearing signs of rough treatment on their bodies, but none are able to remember so much as their name. The six find food and clothing within the buildings and begin to remember some things about themselves. They scout around the area outside the compound and discover a trail and a stream. They cannot agree on which to follow, so they split into two parties and go off looking for other humans.

This story mostly concerns the growing power of Dominic de Tomas, who is apparently redesigning the Kingdom government on the model of the Third Reich. He quickly organizes a social structure that involves his political party in every aspect of civilian life and starts moving into the military forces. The Confederation ambassador, Jayben Spears, soon recognizes the growing authoritarian structure, but is unable to effectively oppose the changes.

Like Hitler, de Tomas proves to be a charismatic figure and quickly establishes himself as a beloved leader. He unleashes all the power of the governmental propaganda ministry, appealing mainly to the working classes. His own Special Group troops are fanatically loyal to him. The young intellectuals are against him, but their parents are not. The SG are picking up his opponents and the discontented and either imprisoning or executing them. His power is growing every day. Then one of the SG units picks up a young woman within a deserted village and the tide starts to turn.

Highly recommended for Sherman and Cragg fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of underground resistance groups within a total dictatorship.

3 out of 5 stars Isn't hardback supposed to be the sign of a good book?.......2003-12-11

To start out ive been a fan of StarFist for about two years. I have every book in the series so far and I have enjoyed everyone of them. i have been antisipating this book for quite awhile and id like to say it was worth the wait, but id be lying.
to start out, the description on the book sais lots of non-stop action. yet that is not true at all. usually in starfist there is quite a bit of action. but now there was so little i can count the times, 3, and they lasted maybe a half a page to a page out of the 305 or 6 page book.
really, the book is too long, what might have been a short 100 page paper back is drawn out into 300 sum pages. i thought about taking the book back since its a waste of 20 bucks, but i decided to keep it since i have the other 8.

the novel is also more of a love story than anything else between a marine, we all know who, and comfort brattle and colleen a fellow p.o.w. and the neo-nazi regime of kingdom isnt that bad at all. sigh..the say the least, get the book so you can have it for the collection, but id get the paperback version when that comes out. hopefully the next books and the runoof series of starfist:recon will be way better.

5 out of 5 stars A Great addition to the series.......2003-12-09
