Book Description

Headhunters--third-party agents paid a fee by companies for locating job candidates--perform a unique sales role. The product they sell is people, matching candidates with jobs and companies with candidates. Headhunters affect the professional lives of thousands of employees every day, and their work has a profound, though hidden, effect on the employment picture in the United States. William Finlay and James E. Coverdill draw on interviews with and observations of headhunters and on analysis of headhunting training seminars, lectures, industry newsletters, and a mail survey of headhunting firms. The result is a frank and sometimes unsettling portrait of the aims, attitudes, and tactics of practitioners.

The payment of fees has shifted from candidates to employers, and recruiters now find people to fit jobs rather than the other way around. Finlay and Coverdill address what they feel is a serious lack of research about the work headhunters do and how they do it. Their book is built around three major questions: What advantages do employers derive from using third-party agents to handle candidate search and recruitment? How are headhunters able to accomplish the double sale ("selling" candidates to employers and employers to candidates)? What criteria do headhunters use for selecting candidates? In the process, Finlay and Coverdill link their findings to larger issues of institutional and historical context, revealing the economic and political reasons clients use headhunters, demonstrating how headhunters manipulate clients and candidates, and assessing the impact of headhunters' actions on hiring decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting read, even if repetetive on the main theme.......2007-05-13

I found the book to be full of useful material. Although sometimes one has climb around the author's ego, this will be one of the books that I re-read every few months.

3 out of 5 stars For Contingency Recruiters only.......2005-07-24

Not a bad academic study of the contingency recruiter world. It lays out the basic recruiting process for the low to mid level staffing world.

5 out of 5 stars Best comprehensive headhunting book for headhunters.......2005-05-13

I have been working in this field for 25 years, and read most of the major books. Although I am a big fan of Bill Radin, this
book blew me away. Perhaps it's social science orientation rather than "war stories" that you find in other books of this ilk. True, as another reviewer says it does not have a major web focus, but the web is a tool and more for HR than headhunters. Companies don't pay 5, and occasionally, 6 figure fees for what they can get off of a $500 ad on Careerbuilder or Monster.com. The data doesn't lie. Anyone that wants to start, improve, or reach their peak in this often misunderstood profession should definitely read this book. It's a fairly quick read, but it tells you what you need to do to be a successful headhunter via in depth surveys of successful practitioners.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of how headhunters work, but in mind 90's.......2002-10-01

As a novice in the recruiting/headhunting industry doing research for a business plan, I found this book to be very informative. It has input from a lot of real time headhunters, so you get to understand how they work on an industry level and on a day to day basis. However, in spite of vast research the authors have put into this book, most of the research was carried out in mid nineties (although the book was published in 2002) so the word "internet" comes up only twice (or a few times) in the book. One gets an impression that the resume/candidate database is one of the most important assets for a headhunter, but I wonder to what extent that is relevant given that a few resume databases such as monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs (some of these sites are mentioned only once or not at all) will give anyone access to a greater number of resumes' than someone who has been in this business for a long time and relies on the resume's in their own database.
But, is in any industry, certain things always remain the same, even with the influence of the internet, and this book does a great job of shedding light on how headhunters work in the marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Headhunters.......2002-03-08

This book is really excellent. The authors have captured the essence of what it is to be a headhunter. Absolutely accurate. A must read for all headhunters, corporate recruiters, employers and employment professionals. This book is filled with perceptive insights, analysis and conclusions that accurately portray how and why headhunters do what they do. Headhunters, as well as people who use headhunters, will benefit greatly from this information. After reading this book you will know more about headhunting than many headhunters themselves.

Book Description

This book challenges current beliefs about organizational identity, reputation, and branding. It contains a wealth of new ideas for finding the elusive answers to questions troubling contemporary organizations. How does an organization create a strong reputation? What are the implications of corporate branding on organizational structures and processes? How do organizations discover their identities? These are some of the vexing problems addressed in this book by a diverse international team of contributors. According to the authors, the future lies with 'the expressive organization'. Such organizations not only understand their distinct identity and their brands, but are also able to express these externally and internally. In order to thrive in an era of transparency and customer choice, the authors argue, organizations will have to be expressive.

4 out of 5 stars not for everyone.......2002-08-22

The empirical writing of this book is extremely useful for those familiar to the public relations industry but will be difficult for those unfamiliar with the subject. For those wo are just beginning or even just have a non-professional interest in public realtions, I would recommend they read Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine instead.
The Expressive Organization's differing perspectives and opinions of the authors expressed in this book may make it hard for those not of an academic nature.

Quick review : Star rating 4. This book covers issues relating to identity, reputation, branding and communication in a mainly academic manner. But there are empirical examples and plenty of practical ideas included as well. Suitable for both academics and practitioners, although not always an easy read, and not all chapters feel right for the book.

Full review : The editors of this book argue that organisations are increasingly competing based on their ability to express who they are and what they stand for - hence the title of the book. The chapters are written by authors from organisation studies, communication, marketing, strategy and accounting. Most of the authors are academics, but have practical experience and have collaborated with practitioners.

The authors have sought to come up with integrative ideas that can be implemented as well as more theoretical ideas.

The book covers issues such as how organisations discover their identities, how a growing organisation's' identity can be broaden, the processes involved in changing an organisation's identity, how a strong reputation can be created, what organisations should communicate about themselves and what they can do if their reputation is threatened.

Part 1, which contains two chapters, is called Rethinking Identity and deals with identity at the organisational level. It is an introduction to the different conceptualisations of corporate as well as organisational identity. The first chapter looks at different approaches to identity within various fields. It is a resonable attempt to capture the issues from an academic perspective (not always easy) but also tends to over generalise the research contributions and viewpoints of some of the academic fields they discuss (such as that of marketing). Chapter 2 looks at how organisational identity can be a competitive advantage for companies.

Part 2, also consisting of two chapters, is called The Symbolic Marketplace. It is about the symbolic dimensions of the new market place. The first chapter takes a historical perspective, and looks at how the roles of brands and branding changed in the last part of the 20th century, and how brands are becoming the company's most critical source of distinctiveness and value. The next chapter looks at organisational life and argues that the boundaries between consumers and organisational members are becoming blurred.

Part 3, comprised of two chapters, is called Reputation as Strategy. The first chapter analyses the transformation of Royal Dutch Shell. The second one looks at how damaged corporate reputations can be repaired.

Part 4, titled Organisations as Brands, looks at the implications of branding organisations. The first chapter looks at how different kinds of images can be associated with corporate brands and different ways corporate identity can be expressed in. It also looks at issued relating to building and managing brand equity. The second chapter argues that many brand tools are dated and do not create value for the customer. It expands the marketing mix to include reputation and suggests an integrative framework and methodology for organisational brand building.

Part 5 has four chapters and is called The Value of Story telling. The chapters in this part look at corporate stories and include empirical illustrations of how story telling can be used in organisations.

Part 6 contains three chapters and is titled Communicating Organisations. It deals with the communication of the expressive organisation. It covers issues such as the self-absorption and self- seduction in corporate branding, and questions whether the public really cares about the expressions generated by companies.

Summary

This is a rather 'heavy' going book and not always an easy read, probably due to the differing academic and practitioner backgrounds and perspectives that have been included. In addition to read all the chapters would be rather time consuming, and the presentation of research in some of the academic fields, does not necessarily reflect the much wider scope of research conducted or viewpoints held within them.

Overall however, this is a resonably good book for anyone with a keen interest in identity and branding. It has the characteristics of an academic book, with theoretical ideas, but with interesting ideas for practitioners.

      Book Description

Here Now Next is the first scholarly account of the origins of Gestalt therapy, told from the point of view of one of its chief theoreticians, Paul Goodman, by a man who knew him well. Stoehr describes both Goodman's role in establishing the principal ideas of the Gestalt movement and the ways in which his practice as a therapist changed him, ultimately leading to a new vocation as the "sociotherapist" of the body politic.

      4 out of 5 stars A loving, clear-sighted appraisal.......2005-09-28

In this excellent intellectual biography, Taylor Stoehr presents a loving, clear-sighted appraisal of Paul Goodman's contributions to the formulation and practice of Gestalt Therapy. With telling anecdotes from Goodman's life, and a deft handling of the psychotherapeutic concepts, Stoehr summons a vivid picture of the therapy's development.

This book is a welcome corrective to the tendency of Fritz Perls' larger-than-life persona to overshadow the contributions made by Goodman and others.

It is also a highly illuminating companion read for anyone tackling Goodman and Perls' psychological magnum opus "Gestalt Therapy".

For those looking for a capsule synopsis of Goodman's psychological work, I recommend Stoehr's pithy introduction to his edited volume of Goodman's briefer writings on psychology, "Nature Heals"

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for students of Gestalt Therapy.......2000-04-03

For anyone who is a student of Gestalt Therapy this book is a must. Stoehr's work gave me a deep appreciation for the intellectual legacy of Paul Goodman.

      Book Description

From the savannas, woodlands and deserts of East and southern Africa, the author of this informative and readable book has captured over 50 species of wildlife in a summary verse and short article. A gifted southern African artist has painted a watercolor illustration for each.

Most major groups of African wildlife are represented in this marvelous menagerie and loosely organized under seven whimsical sub-titles. In describing each animal's characteristics, the author focuses on its adaptations for survival, such as the bushbaby's eyes and the aardwolf's digestive system. She recounts fascinating behaviors, many based on her own observations, and draws on African folktales for explanations of other behaviors, such as oxpeckers' preference for giraffes. She also refers to the roles of some of the wildlife symbolized in Egyptian mythology.

Awesome African Wildlife is intended for a general readership, including older children. It contains a color satellite map of Africa, a reading list and a table of metric and US measurements. Scientific names are given for further reference. A unique feature is a copy of an 1864 photograph from the London Zoo of a quagga, the zebralike animal that is now extinct.

"It is wonderful--so perfect to spark someone's interest and to strengthen interest in wildlife. It is basically done in a very loving way. Often you get books about wildlife that are too scientific for general consumption or just too spiritual/flakey, but this is written on a level that anyone should be able to relate to."

As a medical student, I have found this to be an extremely valuable asset to my library. Some of the other students I know simply scoff at buying something like this, what with the Internet being the golden egg to so many. There are times though, that using a book for reference is not only functional, but also sometimes even easier, not to mention you don't have to second guess the information like you sometimes have to when pulling something from the internet. I have to find various times and places to study, and cannot always have easy access to a desktop computer or laptop. This 2,256-page behemoth is just that, it is a monster of a book. However, the durable make of it coupled with several ribbon markers makes it user friendly as well as fun! It is very in depth, having etymologies applied when necessary. It also has over 2,000 illustrations and beyond punctuation and spelling, also goes in depth with historical references so that you are not just finding the source of what you are looking for, but also the history of how it became that way. The medical terms found within are helpful and I have used this every day in some of my own research assignments. It is expensive, but considering that you are using it to better yourself in one form or another, I feel it is worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Convenience in a Weighty Package.......2007-01-16

This dictionary is a hefty 9-ish pounds, but that is actually a point of pride for me. I love to sit on my bed cross-legged and plop this hardcover in my lap, skimming through the delicate pages. If I'm looking for a specific word, the thumb indexing makes it very simple to navigate the 2,000+ pages. This dictionary is everything I ever wanted. I really enjoyed looking through the Proofreader's Marks (in the back, under the Basic Manual of Style). They make editing a peer's work a lot easier.

5 out of 5 stars excellent quality highly recommended.......2007-01-13

I bought this book for my brother. He was thrilled with the quality and the binding. It was a good choice for what he was looking for. The level of diversity that the book had such as new words, etc. was a big plus. We had looked at the idea of an older unabridged book and decided the more modern options had a bigger plus for a book that would actually be used and not just sitting on the shelf. The reviews of others were very helpful in evaluating the merit of this wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate dictionary.......2006-03-06

Webster's Unabridged Dictionary has every word imaginable in it. We have one in our sixth-grade classroom, and we often use it to look up words that aren't in our personal pocket dictionaries.
The binding is classic and elegant, and there are THREE marking ribbos.
There is things that might be fixed in the next edition, though. It would be good if the pages weren't so thin, because the pages are rather large and it's easy to tear whe you turn the pages.

          Book Description

Vilified by fellow Victorians for his sexuality and his dandyism, Oscar Wilde, the great poet, satirist and playwright, is hailed today, in some circles, as a "progressive" sexual liberator. But this is not how Wilde saw himself. His actions and pretensions did not bring him happiness and fulfillment. This study of Wilde's brilliant and tragic life goes beyond the mistakes that brought him notoriety in order to explore this emotional and spiritual search.

Unlike any other biography of Wilde, it strips away these pretensions to show the real man, his aspirations and desires. It uncovers how he was broken by his two-year prison sentence; it probes the deeper thinking behind masterpieces such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and "De Profundis"; and it traces his fascination with Catholicism through to his eleventh-hour conversion.

Published on the 150th anniversary of his birth, this biography removes the masks which have confused previous biographers and reveals the real Wilde beneath the surface. Once again, Joseph Pearce has written a profound, wide-ranging study with many original insights on a great literary figure.

1 out of 5 stars Ellmann for Dummies.......2006-10-16

Pearce begins his book pompously: "I am convinced that [this book] penetrates to the very core of its subject." Yet, rather than provide insight into Wilde as Pearce claims, the book is only the Reader's Digest version of Ellmann's biography. If you are short on time and want an overview of Wilde's life and work, you could do worse. Just don't expect perceptive analysis.

          4 out of 5 stars an essential.......2005-12-12

There seem to be two types of Oscar Wilde biographies. One, treats him like a sexual martyr and hardly gets into his huge talents at all. The other talks only about his career and treats the episode with Lord Alfred Douglass like a spot on an otherwise pristine carpet. Jospeh Pearce refuses to take either path. He looks at Oscar Wilde, the man, the artist and the broken soul. Wilde had some ideas about himself and was like Herod, fascinated by religion but was unable to stir himself to change. He a genius and was spoiled, pampered and protected by his class and talent but that left him totally unprepared for a brute of a man like the Marquiss of Queensbury.

Pearce is gentle with Wilde but he doesn't excuse him. Wilde failed his wife and his sons miserably and the nameless, faceless rent boys of London weren't just props, they were shabbily used human beings. Pearce makes this all clear but he also discusses the hope of Wilde's life, his last minute conversion. Give this well written book a try. It is a completely different and fresh look at Oscar Wilde.

4 out of 5 stars The author is maybe a little too forgiving, but thorough..........2004-12-10

Before reading this biography all I knew about Oscar Wilde was that he was oversexed and the author of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Joseph Peace does a good job of revealing Wilde's upbringing, studies, and career. In fact I am now reading and pondering other works of Wilde's like, De Profundis.

The author seems harsh to Wilde's lovers and most forgiving of the "Wilde Life." The book paints a picture of Oscar Wilde as a gifted artist who, as his life progressed, became a moral degenirate and a drunkard, in that order. Wilde apparently felt and even expressed remorse, but seemed incapable of acting on it. Yes, "We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." But, that said, Oscar Wilde was predatory in his pursuit of and obsession with younger men. As Pearce points out, Wilde's sin destroyed his family and destroyed him. Wilde died almost friendless and a pauper. Wilde didn't seem so much interested in love as he did in pleasure. What Wilde expressed on paper he was not capable of in himself. The book is an interesting study of the decadent movement of the 19th century in art and literature, and will open the reader up to lesser known writers and artists, who were Wilde's contemporaries. Pearce does make the reader feel sad for Wilde as he was brilliantly talented, but morally a train wreck. Over all, not a bad read and a good introduction to the life of Oscar Wilde.

          5 out of 5 stars A valuable second opinion on Wilde's life.......2002-02-04

This very readable book is very useful corrective to what's become the "standard" view of Wilde. It's especially good at exposing the weaknesses of Richard Ellman's now-standard biography of Wilde. For example, the claim that Wilde contracted (and later died of) syphillis is pretty much taken apart by Pearce.

Pearce has also very closely read Wilde's works, so he offers some very valuable readings of Wilde's writing in order to better understand Wilde's inner life--a life, according to Pearce, that was marked by inner loathing and a self-rebuffed desire to embrace the Church.

Ellman's book remains the standard biography in terms of prose quality (Ellman wrote with uncommon beauty and grace, and Ellman's enthusiasm for Wilde's work and personality is truly infectious). However, Pearce's book really should be must reading for all fans of Wilde's work. It doesn't merely trot out all the old information and anecdotes, but actually offers a fresh view of Wilde.
