Book Description
This book, first published in 1924, covers some methods evolved and adopted during the author's 33 year career on Wall Street. Wyckoff sets down specific rules to be followed in trading and investing operations with the idea that an out-of-towner can succeed in Wall Street as an investor as long as one depends on self-judgment rather than on that of any other person.
Customer Reviews:
Oldie but goodie!.......2006-11-06
This book was written many years ago, but I believe the principles hold true as much today as when it was written. Very good basic patterns and common sense trading.
A GREAT CLASSICAL BOOK ON STOCKS & BONDS.......2000-08-20
This book is somewhat of an "inspirational" work on the financial operations of Wall Street. It may not carry any exciting technique but contains a great deal of valuable commonsense information which is so often ignored by the agerage investor and which could save them thousands of dollars in losses.
Some insight is given on how to study a 'sector' carefully then narrow down to a specific company that my serve as the best investment potential. Mr. Wyckoff gives his views from both as a trader and as a broker and investment advisor. You will also learn the procedure of how he turned an odd-lot campaign into a fortune, thus providing hope for small traders and investors.
Much of the advice and caution given has not changed after so many years has passed. For instance, he said that you cannot get real good advice to buy because newsletter writers are usually ripped-off by some person subscribing and giving it free to their friends etc. Sure enough all of this still continues till this day. This is certainly a great book for stock and bond traders.
A Pioneer.......2000-01-15
Virtually everything written after Livermore and Wyckoff are variations on themes developed by these two men. Wyckoff was among the first to explain the accumulation-distribution cycle (which makes stock and market timing possible) and to develop the use of "surrogates", self-made indexes which consist of a handful of leading stocks in a group (such as semiconductors), which warn the investor of impending moves, and which enable the investor to filter out all the noise of broadcasters, publishers, newsletters, message boards, and chat rooms.
Understand Wyckoff and you'll understand the engine that drives stocks and markets rather than be distracted by the genuine imitation wood trim and the smell of the leather seats.

Book Description
The present issue contains contributions which cover many aspects of the molecular diversity, phylogeny, variability and PCR-detection of toxigenic fungi and their toxins. Notable amongst these are a review of the phylogeny and diagnosis of Fusarium species and a new system for identifying Fusarium species based on a DNA sequence database. Other papers describe the diversity and analysis of ochratoxigenic Aspergilli and Penicillia. This information will greatly aid those concerned with the early detection of these fungi and their mycotoxins, information which is so essential for overcoming the health risks associated with mycotoxin-contaminated food products.

This new spiritis it Hermes?disrupts life, alarms family and friends, and brings messages from "elsewhere". Finally, with luck, transformation occurs; life begins again.

The first comprehensive survey of Chinese environmental history, this book crystallizes a new field of scholarship that studies the creation of distinct environments as a result of the interaction of human social systems with the natural world. Pioneering essays explore new methodologies of historical environmental research, comparisons of China with the West and Japan, and the impact of the early modern ecological transformation on the spread of disease. Must have for any first time coach, or long time coach that needs improvement. .......2007-05-12
I am a first time coach, and this book has been a true gift for me! Every idea is wonderful and the printable forms have been so helpful. I wish I could say more, but I have 19 girls waiting for me to begin practice right now. A practice that will be organized, consistent and well worth their time thanks to Pam's book.
Sincerely,
A Cheerleading Coach from Washington State
Straight to the Top.......2005-09-16
This book is a completely comprehensive look at coaching a cheersquad. It is not specific to the United States, so most of the suggestions, strategies and helpful hits can be used in countries outside of there (for me specifically Australia). Just starting a squad is must less daunting with the assistance of this text, as it clearly lays out an idiot-proof way to work through each step. Thanks heaps!!
Excellent Resource.......2005-01-24
These authors covered every detail of starting a cheer program or improving an already successful cheer program. The forms they provided were an excellent resource. Thanks for taking the time to compile your experience in coaching cheerleading.
Book Description
Updated and revised to include the top 50 communities in the country, complete with an interactive, searchable CD-rom.
50 Fabulous Places to Retire in America, Third Edition has the answers to one of the biggest questions you'll ever ask yourself: Where am I going to live when I retire? For some, the answer is as simple as right here, of course.
However, for those adventurous souls who find themselves deliciously intrigued by the notion of going somewhere else after retirement, or even for those who are only considering a move, this book will prove to be an entertainingand invaluableresource.
With his engaging and congenial style, author Arthur Griffith describes 50 of the most attractive, accessible, and outright fabulous places to retire in the United States: lovely, welcoming, convenient, soul-satisfying, warm, sunny, cold, snowy, desert, mountainous, plains, ocean-front, big-city, small-town, way-out wilderness, or just-around-the-corner locations to call home. The book also includes an easy-to-use, interactive CD containing a wealth of information to make your search that much easier and a lot more fun!
Do you want to raise exotic orchids? Want to breed miniature horses? Want to sit by the ocean and count the eagles flying? Looking for the best country-western town? The best golfing for the money? The most shopping per square foot? How about hunting, fishing, and trapping? No matter how specific and unique your desires are, this comprehensive book covers it all!
And for the more practical reader who needs concrete facts and figures, look no further: From annual precipitation to sample costs of residency, you will find numbers and statistics to warm the heart of the most detail-oriented economist in the house.
Over the past several years, Arthur Griffith has lived all over the United States as a radio broadcaster, an engineer, and a computer consultant. He has authored 12 books, and currently teaches online from his home on the (unpaved) North Fork Road near Anchor Point, Alaska. He lives there with his wife, Mary, and their two cats, Captain Editor and Miss Effie. Occasionally, he may be found directing or acting in local community theatre productions.
Customer Reviews:
Good book but do you trust the numbers?.......2006-10-16
This is a good book - 3* to 4* you call it, regardless of whether it hits your favorites. While not the best, it is a useful addition. However, the book falls short in two areas.
1) It is more of a compilation of facts than it is a guide. You never get a sense of the 'personality' of each place or learn what it would be like to live there. And it is this 'personality' which causes informed people to select completely different towns to which to retire.
2) Some of the fact based data is suspect or confusing. I honestly don't know which. For example, the national averages for crime are listed differently in different places (numbers rounded)...
- total national average: 4325, 2736, 4119, 4532
- national average violent crimes: 348, 331, 496, 702, 398
- national average property crimes: 2459, 4533
To be fair, the authors actually do repeat the same numbers sometimes. But the data for some cities doesn't seem to match other data sources. For example, Scottsdale is cited as having 60 crimes per 1000 people (higher than the national average, assuming we know the average). Published FBI statistics are lower than 60 (?). And Tucson is listed as having "its share of drug traffic and related crime". What is one supposed to do with this incisive insight?!
Why these places?.......2006-08-03
The data and information finished for each city seemed to be up to date and useful. The selection of which city were included was just weird. California had only three cities: the old line, expensive Palm Springs, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. On the other hand, Alaska also has three cities: Anchorage, Homer, and Palmer. How Alaska is beautiful and a great place to take an extended summer vacation, but I would think only a few people will want to retire there. It just seemed to be a random selection of cities around the US.
I do not know what was on the CD. The CD software would not install on my computer (Window XP). It seemed to be trying to access/change off limit areas.
An eclectic viewpoint of retirement.......2006-05-27
The authors do a fine job of covering all of the bases and a vast majority of the 50 states in looking at favorable places to retire. They do not come to the table with a predefined viewpoint of what a retired person wants. Instead, they take a "facts in brief" approach to describing each potential retirement destination and let you make your own judgements. Each destination's article starts with describing the median home price, percentage of population over 65, closest metro area, population size, and finally a short paragraph describing the "Best Reasons To Retire Here".
Next there is a climate table with Jan./April/July/Oct./Year labeling each row and the average high temperature, low temperature, precipitation in inches, and percentage sunshine labeling each column. All utility costs and companies are listed next. The section entitled "The Tax Axe" shows all state and local taxes and fees including car registration, driver's license, sales tax, state tax, retirement income tax (bonds, stocks, etc.), and property taxes including any senior exemptions if they exist. There is a section on local real estate that includes average price of a 3 bedroom house, average price of a 2 bedroom condo, housing styles, rental market, average rent, communities popular with retirees, and nearby areas you might want to consider. There are additional sections on the local job market, medical care, special services for seniors, continuing education such as local junior colleges, crime and safety statistics, transportation including nearby airports, and a final section entitled "Let the Good Times Roll" which outlines culture, recreation, and special events. Each locale's section concludes with websites, addresses, and phone numbers where additional information can be found if desired.
I really appreciated the fact that there were only eight Florida locations mentioned out of the 50, and that rural, urban, heartland, and coastal destinations were all included. I'm a Texas native that has been transplanted to the east coast, and it seems that the local retirees and soon-to-be-retired on the east coast have a kind of tunnel vision that makes many of them believe that Florida is an elephant burial ground in which they are destined to end up and really causes them to self-limit their choices. Likewise, my fellow Texans seldom think of setting foot outside the state of Texas when they retire and usually wind up spending retirement within 100 miles of where they lived pre-retirement, regardless of their resources. Hopefully, potential retirees from all parts of the nation will pick up this book and realize that there is a big country out there with valid retirement choices in all parts of it.
Good For Organizing Your Thoughts.......2006-05-22
There are three things tht I really like about this book:
1. He has developed an excellent format for checking out the characterists of a community. Rather you use his recommendations or not, these are questions that you would want to answer about any community in which you are thinking about retiring.
2. He has selected a series of cities that you probably wouldn't think of investigating yourself and done the investigation for you. I mean, who would have thought of Ruston, Louisiana.
There are a couple of things that I think might have been done differently.
1. There is a trend to moving into the city. New York, for instance has excellent transportation, medical facilities, and of course Broadway. As oil for heating and gasoline gets more and more expensive, this may be important.
2. One of his cities is Lafayette, Louisiana. Anyone moving there that isn't being transferred by an oil company or something like that had better like hot, humid and bugs. (I was born a bit east of there.)
Wait, I said that there were three things I liked and only mentioned two of them. The third thing I liked is that he didn't mention where I live. It's a great place, but we have enough people.
You can retire well.......2006-02-23
Even if you did not take your financial planner's advice to save as much as you should have, Mary and Arthur Griffith give you hope that you can find an engaging place to fit your budget and your dream of something special for retirement. The book feels more like a travelogue and yet has the honesty of mentioning drawbacks as well as beauties of the place. The details of costs are there for the number cruncher in the family and what to do when the grandkids visit is there for the social secretary.
They present a very intelligent structure for the critical information so you can compare places. You can also use their structure as a guide when you discover a place that you want to evaluate on your own. Gift this book to friends and to youself even if you are years away from retirement. Start dreaming about years of free time and remember that long vacation has a price tag. As a financial planner and radio show host who had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Griffith, I was impressed by the authors' delight in the variations of lifestyles, and by the integrity of the research in this well written book. Enjoy learning about America, vacation at some of the places and plan for your future.

50 Fabulous Places to Retire.......2000-01-08
This book is a little dated, but it seems to be the most current available on the subject. The RetirementInsider website has many more communities and more current information.
Great for finding the perfect place to retire.......1999-09-06
This is the wonderful book for finding the perfect place to retire. You learn about each city's climate, costs, taxes, real estate, crime, culture, recreation, transportation, education, medical care & job market.
The overview section is very helpful for getting a feel for the city as well recognizing both its positives & drawbacks. A listing of newspapers, a realtor, & the Chamber of Commerce with contact information is also great aid.
Since a great climate is important to me, I also found the detailed data on weather helpful. It includes seasonal high/low temp, avg. rain/snow inches, avg. # of rainy days, & avg. humidity. The # of days below 32 & over 90 is also included.
As a bonus this book also helps you figure out how much money you will need & how to make it work for you. Tips on moving successfully are also included. If you're thinking about retiring, or even just moving, this is the book you.
Book Description
This large format, comprehensive, high quality and visually rich art book covers the history of animation throughout the world, focusing heavily on the North American creative engines of Disney, Warner and now the new, small production CGI houses. The book is divided into world regions to reveal the clear developments in each area, but heavy cross referencing will show the increasing internationalization of animation from the 1930's when the industry and creative imagination of Walt Disney began to infect artists and producers the world over, revealed most recently in The Matrix phenomenon where the bridge between the first and subsequent films, (Animatrix, nine animated shorts), was provided by a pioneering collaboration between US and Japanese animation studios.
Beginning with the earliest in animation, we follow the few individuals who worked on their own to develop techniques that would soon transform animation into a mass-market phenomenon. In recent years, animation has been hugely impacted by the arrival of the computer, seen in films such as Toy Story and Shrek. Computers have pushed animation to the limit by achieving fine, detailed, real-world rendering techniques that challenge the next generation of animators.
Customer Reviews:
Unbeatable overview of animation art.......2007-02-18
I loved this book, read it four times. It covered all types of animation
including stop motion. It was organized by decade, by country. There were
many contributors who chose what they were most interested in and I guess
their passion rubs off because it is hard to put down and very informative.
If you want a course in animation history, just read this and save your
tuition money. I don't know how Jerry Beck does it all but we all
benefit from his dedication. Thank you, Jerry. Keep up the good work.
An Excellent Overview of the Popular Medium.......2006-09-26
Animation Art is a comprehensive look at the history, development and cultural effects of animation and cartoons.
From the early days up to the latest blockbusters of the 21st century, the authors have covered all concepts, genres and media. Including European, Asian and Canadian cartoons, stop motion, CGI and more.
Beautifully presented with many colour pictures and written by experienced contributors it leaves no stone unturned.
The only disappointment is the amount of text devoted to one of my all time favourites, Tom & Jerry.
Otherwise a comprehensive tome that will provide for anybody interested in animation.
A "feast" for the mind as well as for the eye...........2004-12-16
This is a magnificent achievement. Serving as General Editor, Jerry Beck has brought together in a single volume a riveting narrative which examines the history of cartoon, anime, and CGI with stunning full-color illustrations of that history. As he explains in his Introduction, "We have assembled an international team of animation authorities to tell the tales behind the toons. -The story is told in chronological sequence with choice images that enhance its history...From popular Disney characters to obscure personal films, it is all covered: Hollywood hits and Japanese anime, as well as Russian masterpieces and Asian artfilms. Looking it over, it is quite a wild ride." Indeed it is. The material is skillfully organized within twelve chapters which range from "The Origin of the Art" to "The New Century." By no means do I claim to be an expert on the subject of animation art but I presume to observe that I cannot imagine what has been left out. The illustrations are stunning; the prose narrative is crisp and lucid.
In the Foreword, Jeffrey Katzenberg observes that animation art provides a unique opportunity "to remember to know who has gone before, to really know the stories, take lessons from them, and bring that knowledge to the future. My hope is that, one day, other people will feel the same way about about those of us who are making animated films now. While it is an amazing thing to have the opportunity to create films and to bring these enormous enterprises to the world, it is something entirely different and entirely more rare to have our work remembered and considered part of the continuing evolution of an art form." Thanks to Beck, those who work their way through this magnificent volume will not only remember what has been achieved in animation art thus far; they will also understand what can yet be accomplished as others who have yet to reveal themselves through their art.
I highly recommend this volume to anyone interested in animation art, of course, but also to those who have an interest in the creation and evolution of comic books. Also to those who share my high regard for illustrators such as Al Hirschfeld whose art is celebrated in Hirschfeld on Line, now available from Amazon in both book and DVD formats.
book review.......2004-11-05
Informative and entertaining, another good effort by Mr. Beck. I recommend this for any fan of animation.
