Book Description
Since introducing the aggregate supply/aggregate demand model as a fundamental tool for learning economics in the first edition of their textbook, William Baumol and Alan Blinder have, for over two decades, led the teaching and learning of economic with their authoritative and timely discussion of the field. Now in its eighth edition 2001 Update, Macroeconomics: Principles and Policy remains a time-tested tool in teaching and learning the ever-evolving field of economics.
Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to macroeconomics.......2003-12-25
"Increasing demand leads to rising interest rates which leads to reduced investment spending and appreciating currency exchange rates..." The authors of "Macroeconomics" effortlessly provide the economic reasoning that underlie events like these such that they really make common sense - and without the need for rote memorization on the part of the reader. A previous reviewer from Los Angeles did an excellent job in praising Baumol and Blinder for their clear and concise teaching, and I strongly agree with his comments. Instead of going into abstract theories and ideas, Baumol and Blinder focus on making the reader understand the "real world" implications of macroeconomics. For example, each chapter in their book introduces a different contemporary economic issue as a way to illustrate the ideas being described in the text. Additionally, the authors outlined eight take-home messages that they believe the reader should remember after finishing the book. Although the authors label these take-home messages as "Ideas for Beyond the Final Exam", these ideas are equally relevant for student and non-student alike.
It should be kept in mind that the eighth edition of this textbook was published in 1999, so most of the "contemporary" issues that are discussed within are now out of date. In one chapter, for example, the authors' upbeat commentary on America's 1998 budget surplus seems sadly ironic considering the large budget deficit that we are currently dealing with in financing the War on Terror in 2003. Additionally, I thought many of the examples in the book were a bit "pro-Clinton", and depending on one's own political orientation, that may or may not be welcome. I have not looked at the ninth (and latest) edition of "Macroeconomics", but assuming that the fundamental principles remain the same, I would encourage the reader to pick up that copy in order to have a more current and up-to-date illustration of ideas.
Readers looking for mathematical models and equations to play with will be sorely disappointed, as the only foray into mathematical analysis involves deriving the demand-side equilibrium condition of the Keynesian economic model (a simple algebraic equation). But considering that the slant of this book is towards "real world" understanding, I think the authors were probably justified in keeping the mathematical equations to a minimum.
All in all, I think "Macroeconomics" by Baumol and Blinder would be an excellent introduction for the economically-illiterate person (as I was before reading this book). Although many of the examples in the eighth edition are a bit out of date, it is true that the fundamental economic principles that are discussed endure throughout all of the editions of this textbook.
macro class textbook.......2003-03-12
this is a good straight forward text that does not get bogged down in the unecessary details for an introduction to the subject. It is simplified, and straightforward, while trying to be enjoyable reading.
Very fast shipping. Excellent book condition.......2002-01-17
Very fast transaction. Happy with the transaction
Perfect for Intro-level course.......2002-01-10
Baumol and Blinder explain all the important concepts of macroeconomics with tremendous clarity. Students with little or no knowledge of economics will find this book most straight-forward. Interesting real world examples are given to reinforce key ideas. For example, the authors describe the Asian crisis of 1998 to illustrate the shortcomings of a fixed exchange rate system. Secondly, unlike other econ. textbooks, this one is filled with colorful graphs and even photographs. I wouldn't be too surprised if this book succeeds in piquing the interest of those students, who are averse to econ. Finally, the attempts at humor are generally unsuccessful but provide a refreshing change from the unceasing monotony of most college textbooks.
the authors clearly know how to teach.......2000-04-04
I think this introductory econ book is exceptionally good as a text book; a book that truely deserves 5 stars. If a book explains things clearly, I usually give it 4 stars, but this book goes beyond that. The authors made a concious effort to make learning easy and meaningful.
Right at the beginning, the authors will tell you that they don't expect you to be a econ fanatic and remember every little detail - in fact, the authors seem to completely understand why we students forget most details soon after the final exam. So, right a way they list out the main ideas - in their own words: "ideas for beyond the final exam". Not only did the authors filtered out the most important material, they also truly believed that the material will be improtant beyond the final exam - in life that is. It is the first text book I saw that has such a candit and honest attitude because so many books and so many people talks down to me rather than at me.
Also, for each chapter, the authors always begin with some kind of "bait question", something that the reader understands but usually can't answer right a way. This is a great way to focus the chapter and entice people to read. And all the examples the authors use are either famous or recent (or both). One effect is to make you think what you are learning is truly useful because you can use it to analyze so many things from the news. A more subtle impression is that the authors really did update the book every few years to reflect important events that just occurred. As a computer science engineering major, I have seen countless "8th editions" that's just like the prior ones - but I seriously doubt the prior editions of this econ book talked about Asian economic crisis or the booming economy of the 1998 / 99
clear book + impressive effort = 5 stars

the worst microeconomics textbook i have ever read.......2006-05-04
very confusing, non-focusing writing style plus author's splurge of mathematical demonstrations everywhere in the book makes this text book very hard to understand and offers no help for people to grasp the beauty of the economic theory.
Worst Intro Micro Text in the market.......2002-12-19
I was required to buy this book when I took a course taught by the author, Jeff Perloff. This book is the absolute worst micro text I've ever come across. It's confusing and unorganized much like the author himself. If you're looking for a good intro micro text, I suggest you look elsewhere. I highly recommend Nicholson's Microeconomic Theory.
An okay book.......2002-12-02
This book was used for my microeconomics class. It helped me learn the material, but there's still room for improvement.
Having the textbook be so focused on specific examples was not such a good idea, because it made it difficult to understand what do to in a more general problem, or in any problem that deviates from this example. The discussions of concepts, however, were excellent.
I wish the derivations were more integrated into the text instead of in an appendix in the back, and that they were better explained - it's frustrating to spend an hour trying to figure out which steps were left out. The problems in the textbook were challenging but good, however, unless you're at least a econ grad student or some kind of genius, you're probably not going to be able to do many of them just by reading the textbook...which brings me to my last point...if you're taking a class in which this book is mandatory, by all means, get it, it's useful...but if you are trying to learn or brush up on micro without the aid of a class, look for another book
Overpriced.......2002-03-10
I had to purchase this book for an economics course. It does have some good examples and applications, but other times the book just bogs down and is impossible to read. Lastly, the price tag is ridiculious... Teachers, don't make your students waste their money on this.
Great book for MBA students!.......2001-12-21
This textbook is very application-oriented, with a lot of real-life examples. The content of its over 700 page text was organized in a concise way to accommodate a great variety of topics.
If you like to savor those deep economic theories, choose a different one, but if you want to learn some great microeconomic knowledge that will be immediately useful in understanding real-world problems, this is an excellent source.

Book Description
The effective functioning of a democratic societyincluding social, business, and political interactionslargely depends on trust. Yet trust remains a fragile and elusive resource in many of the organizations that make up society's building blocks. In their timely volume, "Trust in Organizations," editors Roderick M. Kramer and Karen S. Cook have compiled the most important research on trust in organizations, illuminating the complex nature of how trust develops, functions, and often is thwarted in organizational settings. With contributions from social psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, economists, and organizational theorists, the volume examines trust and distrust within a variety of settingsfrom employer-employee and doctor-patient relationships, to geographically dispersed work teams and virtual teams on the internet. "Trust in Organizations" opens with an in-depth examination of hierarchical relationships to determine how trust is established and maintained between people with unequal power. Kurt Dirks and Daniel Skarlicki find that trust between leaders and their followers is established when people perceive a shared background or identity and interact well with their leader. After trust is established, people are willing to assume greater risks and to work harder. In part II, the contributors focus on trust between people in teams and networks. Roxanne Zolin and Pamela Hinds discover that trust is more easily established in geographically dispersed teams when they are able to meet face-to-face initially. "Trust in Organizations" moves on to an examination of how people create and foster trust and of the effects of power and betrayal on trust. Kimberly Elsbach reports that managers achieve trust by demonstrating concern, maintaining open communication, and behaving consistently. The f! inal chapter by Roderick Kramer and Dana Gavrieli includes recently declassified data from secret conversations between President Lyndon Johnson and his advisors that provide a rich window into a leader's struggles with problems of trust and distrust in his administration.
Broad in scope, "Trust in Organizations" provides a captivating and insightful look at trust, power, and betrayal, and is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the underpinnings of trust within a relationship or an organization.

The Lobster Coast : Rebels, Rusticators, and the Struggle for a Forgotten Frontier
ASIN: 0942719328 |
Book Description
Lobsters Great & Small stems from the collaboration of environmental scientists with lobster fishermen. The hard data of the scientists has been artfully blended with the salty observations of those who catch lobsters for a living. The star of the show, however, is the lobster, Homarus americanus. The roots of this engaging book go back to 1996, when the US government issued a grant to the Island Institute for a collaborative study by lobster fishers, marine biologists, and oceanographers to study lobster migration patterns and reproductive behaviour. One outcome of this five-year study is this unique and beautiful book, replete with satellite images and colour photos by renowned photographer Peter Ralston and others. Philip Conkling and Anne Hayden explain the science in everyday language, skilfully weaving interesting nuggets of history and human interest into the text. The result is an engaging and comprehensive view of where Maine's lobster fishery came from, where it is now, and where it is headed.

Customer Reviews:
You Cannot Practice Hypnotherapy Without this Seminal Work!.......2002-06-29
I am not going to write a great deal about this book. It speaks for itself and stands on its own. The Answer Within is also the answer that every practicing hypnotherapist must have. Must.
With out the in depth knowledge of the precise techniques, so carefully detailed and skillfully analyzed by the Lankton's, especially the insightful and highly practical prose of Carol Lankton, it would take a life time to develop half of the knowledge contained in this delightfully written text.
The great care and skill shown by Carol and Stephen Lankton make this text come alive and thereby allows the wealth of knowledge it contains flow easily to the reader.
Although this book is specifically targeted to skilled professionals, the concepts, useful & practical concepts, can be grasped and used by the layperson.
I also believe that there is little or no chance of harm or any difficulty arising by a non professional studying this work. In fact, if you spend the time to grasp and understand the basic framework and specialty specific vocabulary, it is one hell of a read.
I recommend it to any person that is studying or practicing hypnotherapy - it is a MUST HAVE! To the interested layman - you can gain a keen insight into a world of treatment and knowledge of your inner self that you probably did not existed in this shape or form. Amazing!
Buy the book. Grow. Learn. Find YOUR Answer. This is the seminal tome.

Book Description
Noble Metals and Biological Systems examines the relationship between noble metals (gold, silver, and platinum group metals) and biological systems. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 is concerned with the analytical chemistry of noble metals and includes a description of the latest methods of analysis. Part 2 describes such topics as ecology and environmental science of noble metals as they pertain to biogeochemical exploration, noble metals in hair, the environmental geochemistry of palladium, microorganisms and noble metals, animals and noble metals, and a general survey of noble metals in the environment. Coverage is comprehensive and includes information regarding the use of dogs and termites as field assistants in mineral prospecting, as well as the fascinating story of the "gold bug", a microorganism that plates itself with gold. Part 3 is devoted entirely to noble metals in the treatment of disease and includes chapters describing the use of osmium and gold for arthritis treatment, silver as a bactericide, and platinum and ruthenium as anticancer agents. Noble Metals and Biological Systems will provide fascinating reading for applied geochemists, environmentalists, public health specialists, ecologists, microbiologists, clinical biochemists, oncologists, and specialists in rheumatic diseases.

Book Description
A Powerful Account of Struggle and Survival at Sea
The lure of paradise was unmistakable, and Bill Butler was on a quest to find it with his wife Simonne—riding the Pacific currents on their sloop Siboney, with a world of possibilities ahead. But, twelve hundred miles from land, the alluring ocean showed its deadly side when, without warning, a pod of pilot whales attacked their sailboat, battering it until it sank beneath the waves. The dazed couple was left drifting in midocean in a leaky six-foot raft meant for coastal waters, with only a few hastily grabbed provisions to sustain them. Simonne, who had never truly shared Bill's dream of circumnavigating the globe, blamed him bitterly for their desperate plight.
In this powerful account of their 66-day odyssey, Butler tells a gritty, harrowing tale of their battles against nature, despair, and their own demons. He reveals how he and Simonne found the strength to survive despite the ravages of hunger, storms, and sharks. Based on Butler's faithful log entries, 66 Days Adrift is both a chilling cautionary tale for sailors with big ideas and an inspiring story of love, faith, and survival against long odds.
"How a lifetime dream to sail around the world becomes a fight to survive."—Yachting
"A vivid account of the complete will to live."—The San Juan Star
Customer Reviews:
2 weeks adrift in a bad book...........2006-03-07
With all due respect to reviewer S Butler, this is one of the most poorly written true life adventure/survival stories I have ever read. I usually race through books of this genre, but I found myself looking in disbelief at how slowly the pages of this one were going by ["Ugh! You mean I'm only on page 68?"] Butler's account of their days in the life raft is nauseatingly self-serving: He portrays himself as unfailingly courageous, inventive, optimistic, polite, and witty, while describing his wife's behavior as consistently mean, childish, petulant, and shrewish. Butler's recollections (or reconstructions) of his oh-so-clever conversation during their days adrift are so unrealistic as to be almost comical. It's a shame that Simonne hasn't written her own book about their shared adventure; I can't help but think that she might have a different story to tell....
In short, if you are looking for an interesting and believably-told true story of survival in the face of extreme circumstances, give this one a pass and get Jon Krakauer's INTO THIN AIR or Candice Millard's THE RIVER OF DOUBT.
lost at sea.......2005-12-14
when I started this book I almost gave up reading it because I knew there was going to be a lot of the same thing. I guess there is only so much you can do in a raft at sea for 66 days. but I am so glad I kept reading because this book really got good when the sharks came around day after day it was a fight to stay alive.I do wish there would have been some pictures. so we could put faces with the names. I am so glad that Bill and his wife made it back.this book is good if you just give it a chance and keep reading. at times I felt as if I was in that raft too! a good read and pretty frighting.
From One Author to Another.......2005-12-05
William Butler has done a superb job putting the reader right on liferaft with him and his wife. A compelling and terrifying read. --- Michael Tougias author of Ten Hours Until Dawn
Overall disappointment.......2005-08-20
I agree with whichever reviewer wrote that this was a great story poorly written.
I am so happy that the Butlers survived their ordeal. I think that this story had a lot of potential. I know it must have been difficult to fill all those pages with exciting prose, but it does get monotonous after awhile. The dialogue is excrutiating to slog through. After reading about two weeks worth of Simone's whining and Bill's chest-puffing denial, I would have wanted to be eaten by sharks. And if Simone didn't divorce Bill for his behavior before this ordeal, she should have after she read what he had to say about how great she'd look after she starved for a few more weeks on the raft. What a schmuck! As we say here in the midwest, the man needs killin'!
Would have loved to have seen photos of the Butlers, their boat, their family, the raft after their rescue, etc. Also would like to know more about why whales would sink a boat and how many times this type of thing has happened in the past.
An OK Read..........2005-05-28
The key selling point of this book is the story. I found it interesting and horrifying and I couldn't wait to see how the Butlers were saved. The author's writing style, however, is monotonous. The middle part of the book is repetitious (in language and content) and somewhat boring. He often repeats thoughts and phrases which caused me to wonder if I was re-reading parts that I had already read. I agree that pictures would have added a lot to this book. I was especially curious to see Siboney, the characters, and to see what the raft looked like after they were saved. All in all, it's an OK read.

Great way to learn vocabulary.......2006-01-31
As a crosswords addict, I found this book to be an invaluable way to learn new Italian vocabulary. I did one of these crosswords every morning. There's something like thirty puzzles, so it's great way to give your Italian a boost in a month. Also, the puzzles are sorted from easiest to hardest and they have different types such as Italian clue, English answer; English clue, Italian answer; and completely in Italian.
Fun way to learn.......2005-06-30
In learning a language, sometimes you just want to step away from the lesson books and the tapes and do something a little different. Why not crossword puzzles?
I agree with the other reviewer who felt that the puzzles in this book were a little too organized into "themes". It would have been more challenging to have constructed them like ordinary puzzles. In fact, it would have been even better if a variety of word puzzles were included. However, the book is useful for learning vocabulary and the puzzles are small enough that they can be completed fairly quickly.
Not perfect, but a helpful tool.
not as expected.......2005-06-26
The front cover of the book shows a particular kind of crossword puzzle, and that's what I had expected to buy. Those puzzles are fun because you can learn new words and, with increasingly more letters available, even guess a new word. Easy Italian Crossword Puzzles does not use this type.
What does the book do? Each word puzzle concentrates on a topic: weather, color, time, animals, etc. The early puzzles give words in English and you need to find the Italian word, or vice versa. Later puzzles give the word in Italian and ask for a synonym in Italian. At the end of the book, you will find answers to all puzzles. The whole book is more of a vocabulary quiz than a puzzle. I was disappointed.

Terrific, but..........2004-12-29
I love Alison Kent and she writes the best loves scenes bar none. And she writes great characters as well. Tripp was..well, a trip. The Shaughnessey Accord is lively, clever, suspenseful, sexy and fun, but when I say it's too short, I don't just mean I want more. (which I do) It is novella length which means when it comes in an oversized book it looks really thin. And quite a bit of that is previews at the end. The story was great but it just kind of...stopped. There seemed to be much more here that needed to be told. I doubt it will be rehashed in upcoming books. And the biggest complaint is that at 7.99 I really don't see the value I'm accustomed too. I expect a thick meaty book for that price and this, I'm sorry to say, was just overpriced. It still gets 4 stars because I love what's there... just be warned.
The Shaughnessey Accord .......2004-12-14
This is the second episode in Alison Kent's tantalizing 5 part series. In THE SHAUGHNESSEY ACCORD, we meet Tripp Shaughnessey, the quirky jokester of SG-5.
Tripp is positioned in Manhattan, on a 24 hour watch of the supposed efforts of a diamond merchant's unlawful commerce with none other than the enemy Spectra IT. His stakeout spot -- the corner sandwich shop that the SG-5 men frequent for lunch. The owner of the shop, Glory Brighton, has had Tripp's attention for awhile, and he doesn't understand what it is about her that makes him weak in the knees. From his station he has complete surveillance of the ins and outs of the shop, hoping to nail the crooks as they attempt to do their dirty work.
The minute he decides to take a break, and works up the nerve to go and see Glory, disaster strikes. Good guy, right place, wrong time. While he flirts and gets to know her in ways that make the both of them hotter than a tea kettle, the criminals that he is supposed to be keeping a watchful eye on, sneak their way in through the front and hold all the customers and employees hostage.
Unbeknownst to the criminals for the latter part of their malevolence, Tripp manages to keep Glory and himself secure for some time and send out a code to the men of SG-5. But their refuge is quickly stripped away when, Danh Vuong, the chief of the crime committing thugs, discovers them and binds them up, making sure that their plans flow accordingly.
Through this ordeal, Tripp and Glory get to know each other better, thus resulting in an action packed love story.
Though I feel Tripp and Glory's love story wasn't fleshed out as much as I would have liked it to be. I still enjoyed the book, and am anxiously awaiting my third installment to come in - The Samms Agenda. This series just keeps getting better and better.
Another Hot Agent to Love.......2004-12-13
Alison Kent brings another hot and exciting story in The Shaughnessey Accord.
SG-5 Agent Tripp Shaughnessey is a man all women love and the bad guys fear. He has had the hots for sandwich shop owner Glory Brighton for months now. He comes across her in her storeroom and makes his move.
Glory Brighton hasn't had the best of luck with men. She has lusted after the funny and sexy engineer from the offices above her store. Just as Glory decides to tempt Tripp all hell breaks out in her store.
Tripp, Glory finds out is more then what he appears to be on the surface. She must put her trust in him to survive.
Once they believe the danger is over, Glory and Tripp fulfill their desires. Glory and Tripp are a perfect match of wit and chemistry.
Looking forward to the next book in this steamy series.
A humorous erotic romantic suspense .......2004-12-04
In Manhattan Tripp Shaughnessey of the Smithson Group is bored and a bit envious that his friend and fellow member of the elite five, Christian Bane, has had success with covert operations against Spectra (see THE BANE AFFAIR - I will). Perhaps the only thing he is enjoying at the moment is flirting with Glory Brighton, owner of a sandwich shop.
While Tripp obtains a delicious kiss from the restaurateur, Danh Vuong leads other thugs on a raid of the sandwich shop. His boss believes that Glory has something he needs in his war with Spectra. The police arrive before Danh and associates finish their assault. They take hostages, but had not reckoned that Tripp, an alleged engineer, turns into a super operative, which is what he is for the mysterious Smithson Group. Tripp vows no one will harm Glory, the woman he loves.
THE SHAUNESSEY ACCORD is a humorous erotic romantic suspense novel that grips readers whether the lead couple are going at it or battling bad guys. Somewhat tongue in cheek (literally and figuratively), Tripp is a delightfully dangerous man including to his enemies and to his beloved; his kisses stir the all-American wisecracking heroine. Fans of the Die Hard movies will shout Brava to Alison Kent for a fabulous Smithson tale and look forward to the next novel in the series.

Another Great Episode OF The SG-5 Files!!!.......2004-11-01
My only complaint...The story was too short!!! Tripp was a great character and I would have liked to see him and his relationship with Glory more fleshed out...still this was a great amazing read that you won't want to miss.
Glory owns and runs her own sandwich store. The fact that she has the worlds worst record with men, and the fact that her parents worry about this keep her from being over the trees happy. That and the fact that Tripp Shaughnessey has set her on fire with no chance of having that fire extinguished anytime soon doesn't help. At least that's what it looks until he shows up in her storeroom and lays a kiss on her nearly takes the roof off. Then everything comes apart, and her store is being held hostage, and Glory finds out that Tripp may be a little more then he seems.
This was a great read. The chemistry between Tripp and Glory is beyond hot, and Ms. Kent manages to package a lot into a little bit. This is a great edition to her new series and I look forward to the next. I only hope that it's more then 117 pages long.
