Book Description
As the accelerated technological advances of the past two decades continue to reshape the United States' economy, intangible assets and high-technology investments are taking larger roles. These developments have raised a number of concerns, such as: how do we measure intangible assets? Are we accurately appraising newer, high-technology capital? The answers to these questions have broad implications for the assessment of the economy's growth over the long term, for the pace of technological advancement in the economy, and for estimates of the nation's wealth.
In Measuring Capital in the New Economy, Carol Corrado, John Haltiwanger, Daniel Sichel, and a host of distinguished collaborators offer new approaches for measuring capital in an economy that is increasingly dominated by high-technology capital and intangible assets. As the contributors show, high-tech capital and intangible assets affect the economy in ways that are notoriously difficult to appraise. In this detailed and thorough analysis of the problem and its solutions, the contributors study the nature of these relationships and provide guidance as to what factors should be included in calculations of different types of capital for economists, policymakers, and the financial and accounting communities alike.
Customer Reviews:
Tangible intangibles??.......2006-02-23
Suppose a company puts a lot of money and effort in the research and design of a product. These are intangibles. The product, however, does not sell. The research and design have not turned into tangible profits. Then what? In my opinion, they are wasted. This is market risk. Intangibles matter only when they turn into tangibles.
Book Description
The thought leaders at Kepner-Tregoe reveal the seven essential skills to help you effectively put strategic goals into action
If you see a gap in their organization's ability to translate vision into practice, Implementation is written for you--a guide to action-oriented management that directly reflects your corporate vision. Management experts Alan Brache and Sam Bodley-Scott draw from their decades of experience, giving you the tools to bring organizational strategy to life in day-to-day operations. Using the exclusive Kepner-Tregoe methodology, explain each of the seven essential skills of strategy implementation, providing the tactics and diagnostics needed for success.
Customer Reviews:
An Implementation Story.......2006-06-14
A good documentary and not very different from a number of similar predecessors published by KT (Kepner Tregoe) personnel.
I guess we, readers, are constantly bombarded with titles such as the 10 steps to getting rich in 5 days; the 10 traits of a good manager; the 12 reasons for losing your girlfriend and many more.
Bodly-Scott and Brache came up with the 7 skills to help us bridge the Knowing-Doing Gap. A good comprehensive systematic approach but clearly engulfed within the KT-style staretgy framework, which is good enough if you are going to employ the firm to formulate and implement your strategy.
I still found the book exciting, on the first pass, and a great effort is exerted by the authors to impart some implementation experience to the reader. A good overall strategy implementation read.

Great Book.......2003-04-09
Fantastic reference. Great details and info. I wish he would write one on International Harvester.
A Good Reference for any machinery enthusiast........2001-03-28
I foung this book to be a very good reference for Allis Chamblers construction equiptment. While it contains little information on the AC farm tractors, this book covers nearly all of their construction equiptment. There are individual chapters for each type of equiptment, witha thoughle history of each modle. At the end of each chapter there are detailed specification sheets, as well as an apendix of serial numbers and years, so you can pinpoint your tractor's date of manufacture. The book goes gives a good history of the original company, as well as somewhat of a history of the major companies that AC bought, such as BUDA. The book also contains information on models of equiptment continued on into Fiat-Allis, such as the FA HD-31. The book covers all eqiptment, from the first early Monarch crawlers, all the way up to the giagantic HD-41's. There are chapters on industrial eqipyment, such as forklifts, and small crawlers, also inclued. If this author were to write another book like this, I would be first in line to buy it.

Book Description
Analogy - recalling familiar past situations to deal with novel ones - is a mental tool that everyone uses. Analogy can provide invaluable creative insights, but it can also lead to dangerous errors. In Mental Leaps two leading cognitive scientists show how analogy works and how it can be used most effectively. Keith Holyoak and Paul Thagard provide a unified, comprehensive account of the diverse operations and applications of analogy, including problem solving, decision making, explanation, and communication.
Holyoak and Thagard present their own theory of analogy, considering its implications for cognitive science in general, and survey examples from many other domains. These include animal cognition, developmental and social psychology, political science, philosophy, history of science, anthropology, and literature.
Understanding how we draw analogies is important for people interested in the evolution of thinking in animals and in children; for those whose focus is on either creative thinking or errors of everyday reasoning; for those concerned with how decisions are made in law, business, and politics; and for those striving to improve education. Mental Leaps covers all of this ground, emphasizing the principles that govern the use of analogy and keeping technical matters to a minimum.
A Bradford Book
Customer Reviews:
Everyone should read!.......2001-10-03
"Mental Leaps" gives the impression of an academic book, and it is. However, it is written so well that [almost] everyone can understand it. It is a very good intoduction to the very concept "analogy" -- not very philosophical or very abstract, but rather "scientific" and concrete. Authors give a lot of examples and refer to experiments and case studies, thus the reader should have considerable amount of insight on "how we think", "how we learn", "how we understand" and etc. after reading this book. Of course, no one should expect to learn everything about these issues from this book, since cognitive science is still in its infancy. I think anyone can benefit from this book. A little insight about your own "thinking" won't hurt!
Excellent book........1999-06-13
A thoroughly well written very clear representation of the topics discussed. It was a joy to read a book written by authors who could present such an ambiguous topic with such clarity. I strongly recommend it to all those interested in Analogy.

Book Description
The "ecosystem approach" to natural resource planning and management-an approach that focuses on preserving the integrity of entire natural systems-is becoming widely recognized as the key to large-scale environmental health.
The 1978 Water Quality Agreement between the United States and Canada provided the catalyst for implementing ecosystem planning and management in the Great Lakes basin. No longer constrained by arbitrary political boundaries, decision makers could focus their attention at the ecosystem level, with the health of the watershed as their main concern.
In this volume, Susan Hill MacKenzie uses three in-depth case studies to explore the institutional prerequisites to the creation and implementation of ecosystem-based management plans in the context of Great Lakes water resources. The book provides:
- a description of the foundations and historical roots of the ecosystem approach to water resource planning and management
- an assessment of the degree to which the goals of ecosystem management have been achieved
- a comparative analysis and assessment of the planning and implementation processes
- an overview of changes in the institutional structure of agencies in the Great Lakes region
- a prognosis for integrated resource management using the tenets of the ecosystem approach
This study presents important information for resource managers and policymakers at the state and national levels as well as academic and research communities involved with environmental policy and the management of natural resources.

Book Description
Cubs Journal is the definitive 128-year history of the Chicago Cubs. The chronicle covers each year from 1876 through the 2004 season. Organized by decade, each section features a summary, team and player statistics, and highlights of great games. Within each respective decade, every year is given extensive coverage, including a statistical overview and day-by-day breakdowns. Each date includes anecdotes, hitting and pitching highlights, plus interesting and unusual facts — much more than just a box score.
Customer Reviews:
Very engaging but a bit sloppy.......2007-06-12
This is quite an ambitious book, as it covers the history of the Cubs from 1876 through early in the 2005 season. The book touts itself as a day-by-day history of the Cubs, but that doesn't mean it's simply a dry recessitation of mere box scores or pages of statistics. Instead, author John Snyder has put together a collection of memorable dates and games from each of the Cubs' many seasons.
Sprinkled in between the game highlights are little factoids that don't otherwise fit neatly into the chronogical format. These factoids offer everything from analysis of various Cub trades to changes at the ballpark to details of games that the overview leaves out. Very often they are the most intriguing parts of the book.
The book makes for great reading, whether you're a veteran (and long-suffering) fan who wants to reminisce about days gone by or for younger fans who want to get a thorough primer on Cubs lore. Considering the dearth of truly comprehensive books on Cubs history, this book should find a place on every fan's shelf.
Having said that, the book is not without its flaws. The highlight dates definitely make for a good idea, but occasionally it's unclear that the games the author has chosen are really the ones that the fans themselves would have considered the most memorable at the time. He appears to have a fondness for highlighting games which have high-scoring innings. Other times it is not so clear why a particular game has been chosen to be spotlighted, such as this random entry for August 18, 1983: "A three-run homer by Jody Davis accounts for all of the runs in a 3-0 win over the Braves at Wrigley Field. Ferguson Jenkins (8 2/3 innings) and Lee Smith (1/3 of an inning) combined on the shutout." Okay, that's interesting, but what makes this game stand out? In contrast, Snyder fails to mention the June 2nd game of that same seaon, when the Cubs turned a rare triple play against the Pirates.
One weakness with the day-by-day approach is that the whole is often no more than the sum of its parts. One may come away feeling like he or she didn't really get the full picture of the themes, characters, or pennant race of any given season, leaving you wanting more.
A more serious criticism is the great abundance of factual errors throughout the book. Dates and statistics are often wrong. Let's hope that prior to the second edition the publisher carefully scrutinizes the book and cleans it up.
Despite the various criticisms, this is still an essential read for Cubs fans.
NEVER ORDER FROM THIS PLACE.......2007-01-16
I placed this order on Dec. 8th feeling good that it should be no problem getting this by Christmas. Well here it is Jan. 16, 2007 and I am still waiting for this item. I have even spoke to the company and told them I was still waiting for it and they re-sent it, but to the wrong place... not even in the same city. I am not very happy and I will never do business with them again and I would advise anyone else to beware and would advice them to go some place else.
A 720-page, in-depth, definitive history .......2005-06-06
In Cubs Journal: Year By Year & Day By Day With The Chicago Cubs Since 1876, historian and sports enthusiast John Snyder has written a 720-page, in-depth, definitive history chronicling the Chicago Cubs baseball team from its inception in 1876 down through the 2004 season. Enhanced with a profusion of photos, sidebars, statistics, and anecdotes, Cubs Journal is organized by decade, with each section featuring an informative summary, team and player statistics, and highlights of great games, a statistical overview, and day-by-day breakdowns. In addition to anecdotes, each date also includes a hitting and pitching highlights and so much more than a simple box score. The Cubs Journal could well serve as a template for similar sports club histories in baseball or any other team sport. Every dedicated Cubs fan will want their very own copy of John Snyder's Cubs Journal!

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but I wish the topics were better.......2007-10-18
Not bad for the price but I wish the topics were a lot better. I did encounter some mistakes that included some conjugation errors and wrong translations, which were kind of frustrating. For example, in the first dialogue on page 2 the sentence "Dicen que tiene muy buena comida italiana" is translated as "It's supposed to have really good Italian food". To me it sounded a little odd so I asked around and everybody I asked told me that is incorrect. It should be translated as "They say that it has really good Italian food". The verbiage for "it's supposed to" should actually be "se supone que" and not "dicen que". I could point out a few more like that, but I just wanted to give an example. Honestly, I'm not trying to be a jerk but mistakes like this are kind of frustrating because I'm trying to perfect my understanding of Spanish as it relates to English, and for someone who may not realize it these types of errors could give someone a misconception about the true meaning. And although it is at an advanced level, I only found a small percentage actually helpful to me because many of the dialogues and expressions are specifically related to certain topics. For example, the dialogues in Part One include four topics: Dining Out, The Fishing Trip, The Ocean Cruise and Going Shopping. The dialogues in Part Two include: Going Golfing, Buying a House and The Election. I thought the dialogues for Dining Out and Going Shopping were somewhat helpful to me because it's more of what I would expect to encounter frequently. However when I was going through the rest of the dialogues for The Fishing Trip, The Ocean Cruise, Going Golfing, Buying a House and The Election I somewhat lost interest because it's related to very specific topics that frankly really don't interest me much even though it is in Spanish. Don't get me wrong. For the price it's not bad. Some of you might get better use out of it than I did.
I would have given this product 5 stars but . . . .......2007-09-19
To tell you a little about my background, I am the editor of the
Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews)
"your site for free Spanish lessons and unbiased reviews of Learning-Spanish products." I am also a native Spanish instructor
This is the kind of product that I would love to give 5 stars. I can say many great things about it:
1. The recordings have excellent sound quality. Just what the advanced student needs to fine tune her listening skills.
2. The conversations are well thought out and very interesting.
3. The conversations feature native speakers from Latin America
and Spain so that the listener can become accustomed to both accents.
4. When you compare the price of this product to the content that is
contained in it, it is easily one of the best learning-Spanish bargains on the market.
5. The conversations are done at normal speed to improve listening comprehension and then the conversations are done at slow speed to improve pronunciation.
I like this product so much that I have recommended it to my list of over 20,000 learning-Spanish readers that subscribe to my newsletter. So with all these great things to say about his product, why do I refuse to give it 5 stars? Well, the booklet or the transcript that accompanies the product is full of errors. The are instances where the subjunctive is used in the recording but not in the transcript. At other times, the subjunctive is used in the transcript but not in the recording. There are also words missing from the transcript that you will hear in the audio. There are also missing accent marks in many instances.
There is no excuse for putting out such a poorly transcribed document when the recording is top notch.
I still highly recommend that you buy this product. For this price and also considering that there aren't many products on the market for advanced students, you shouldn't hesitate to buy this product. And since understanding spoken Spanish when you hear it is one of the most challenging things for learners of Spanish, I recommend that you buy this product. After you finish using this product I assure you that you will notice that your listening skills have improved immensely.
Just beware that there are numerous errors in the transcript.
Even with all of the errors in the transcript, I can suggest a way that you can get the most out of this product. Consider the task of spotting errors a test.
If you are catching many errors in the transcript then you know that you are truly an advanced student. If you do not notice the numerous errors in the transcript, then you are not ready for this course and need to go back and master the fundamentals of Spanish.
Look for something else.......2007-08-01
I teach Spanish and I recommend looking for another resource. Some of the translations are not accurate and much of the Spanish used is not conducive to normal conversation.
Good Practice... with one drawback.......2007-04-13
This is a great product for the price (under $10 used!) if you are an intermediate or advanced spanish student. It provides multiple conversations in regular speed and reduced speed, with a booklet giving you the translations. I would reccomend to people not to view the booklet until you have listened to the conversations multiple times, because it is sort of cheating and won't help you very much. For the price, you can't beat this good practice. Perfect if you have a decent commute to work or regular drives. I work at a bar till 4am in a town 40 mins away and these CDs make the drive fly by.
The only thing I would say about this CD set I do not like is the horrible people/actors they hired for this voiceover. They COMPLETLEY lack any vocal inflection and it is not always clear when they are upset, happy, etc. They talk like robots would, so it is not really how a true fluent speaker talks. It is actually kind of funny though to listen to their lack of vocal inflection, and critiqueing the CD will help you learn more in my opinion. Apart from that this CD set is great practice, just do not expect to be fluent from listening to it. It should be solely one part in your efforts to improve your Spanish. Good luck!
Can't go wrong.......2007-03-31
The problem with many audio language courses is that they don't furnish a genuine audio context for learners. Consequently, even after completion of a course students are overwhelmed and discouraged at the sheer speed of the spoken language. Not so with Immersionplus Spanish Complete. First you hear the language at normal speed, then at a slower pace, before resuming at normal speed. I found that in the slower version I often picked up what I had missed initially. Ultimately, I could listen at full speed to whole sentences without translating, which is the true secret of gaining audio mastery. I have gone through numerous cd programs in Spanish and found nothing that excels Immersionplus. It's invaluable, not only for intermediate level students, but for those more advanced. Subject matter is pragmatic, drawn from situations one is likely to encounter in the everyday world. One tip: try not to look at your accompanying booklet in order to facilitate true absorption rather than memorization.
Book Description
Andreas J. Kstenberger's new commentary on the Gospel of John draws on extensive research and engages the best of contemporary scholarship, yet provides a readable study that will be beneficial to students, pastors, and scholars. After considering the historical context of the letter as well as its relation to other New Testament writings, Kstenberger turns to his exegetical work. An introduction to each exegetical unit is provided along with the author's own translation of the Greek text. In the course of his verse-by-verse comments, Kstenberger incorporates references to other ancient writings that help explain the book's theological, cultural, and social context. Where appropriate, he draws upon the work of other commentators and provides extensive notes for further reading and research.
Customer Reviews:
good deal.......2007-02-17
everything went well. I wasn't expecting speed so I didn't notice if it was slow. Thanks a lot.
Outstanding Commentary.......2005-05-31
Andreas Kostenberger has provided us with a genuine treat in his new commentary on the Gospel of John. This commentary is in the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series, which is developing into one of the most useful series of commentaries for those who love God's word.
Like all of the commentaries in this series, Kostenberger's volumn is written from an evangelical standpoint that embraces the Gospel of John as being the authoritative word of God. This work consistently interacts with the Greek text and the majority of major contemporary commentaries on John.
Highlights of this volumn include:
1. It is extremely well written. Even in a series known for its readabilty, Kostenberger stands out as a model of clarity. Rather than simply checking selections, I have read this commentary from cover to cover - and it is a great joy to read.
2. Kostenberger makes outstanding use of footnotes. This feature makes it particularly easy to find both the support for his interpretations as well as dissenting voices. I suspect this feature alone will make Kostenberger's commentary the first one to be pulled off of the shelf.
3. Unlike many commentaries that answer all the questions except the one you are actually asking; this volumn shows exceptional judgment in selecting and addressing questions. Preachers will find this commentary a particulary rich and helpful resource in sermon preparation.
Are there reservations in recommending this commentary? Yes. First, while anyone could benefit from Kostenberger's excellent work - it will be best used by those who have at least one year of Koine Greek. Second, I wish that Kostenberger had been a little more painstaking in making and commenting on his (generally excellent) translation. Two illustrations of this should suffice:
1. Kostenberger translates John 3:19 "This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people preferred darkness to light; for their deeds were evil." The words translated "preferred" are almost universally translated "loved" and "more than" (i.e. "loved darkness more than light"). The word "loved" is identical to the word "loved" in John 3:16 just 3 verses earlier ("God so loved the world"). It is difficult to see why Kostenberger would lessen the force of this statement from "loved darkness" to "preferred darkness" and he offers no explanation in his text.
2. Kostenberger translates John 3:9 "Nicodemus answered and said to him, 'how can these things happen?'" The commentary points out that nearly all translations of this verse (NIV, NASB, NRSV, NKJV, NLT, ESV, TNIV, et. al.) render this verse "How can these things be?" Kostenberger then writes: "However, the translation 'How can these things happen?' is preferrable" without offering any explanation at all as to why it is preferrable or what difference it makes. Perhaps he thinks it is simply obvious, but the fact that it wasn't obvious to any of the translation committees of all the major English translations of the Bible cries out for an explanation/argument.
These are obviously very minor criticisms. This is a wonderful commentary and belongs on the shelf of every student of John's Gospel.
Author's Response.......2005-01-26
I appreciate David's positive review. The purpose of this brief note is to respond to the second of his two criticisms, which is that I do not justify my translation of 3:9 as "How can these things happen?" rather than the more conventional rendering, "How can these things be?"
In short, David's criticism is not valid. It is true that I do not include an explicit rationale. I do, however, refer the reader to the commentaries by Barrett and Carson, implying that I concur with their rationale. All the reader has to do, therefore, is to go to one of these commentaries to find out why I favor this particular rendering.
I realize that sending the reader to another commentary is not ideal, but at times it was necessary to use this kind of shorthand in light of space constraints. In any case, the reader who wants to know why I chose this particular rendering can find out why by consulting Barrett and/or Carson. I hope this helps.
