Book Description

In this witty and modest intellectual autobiography, George J. Stigler gives us a fascinating glimpse into the little-known world of economics and the people who study it. One of the most distinguished economists of the twentieth century, Stigler was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1982 for his work on public regulation. He also helped found the Chicago School of economics, and many of his fellow Chicago luminaries appear in these pages, including Fredrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, Ronald Coase, and Gary Becker. Stigler's appreciation for such colleagues and his sense of excitement about economic ideas past and present make his Memoirs both highly entertaining and highly educational.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nobel Prize Winning Book.......2006-11-08

As a trained economist, I appreciated the insider's view of economic history that Stigler provides. His intimate recollection of the famous Chicago School of Economics, its professors, and ideas make this book well worth buying. An economic historian by trade and passion, Stigler has a knack for vividly recalling key events. He discusses his relationships with famous economists such as Friedman and Beck. He also provides detail of how certain ideas crept into the mainstream of economic theory. For example, Stigler warmly recalls the `eureka' moment when Ronald Coase convinced his colleagues at the Chicago School of the logic supporting the Coase Theorem. That alone makes this book well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars A Witty Tour of The Chicago School.......2004-04-12

The dust jacket describes this book as "...at once the masterful intellectual autobiography of one of this century's most distinguished economists and a brilliant overview of the impact of economic ideas on policy since the mid-century." That description is right on target.

Stigler provides everything in this short, accessible book. The reader is treated to a detailed explanation of the evolution of Stigler's thinking on a wide variety of topics. These chapters, such as Chapter 6 ("Monopoly") and Chapter 7 ("Political Regulation of Economic Life") also provide a very good intellectual history of how the generally accepted view of these topics has changed over time. Not coincidentally, these chapters together with Chapter 10 ("The Chicago School") document the tremendous amount of influence the Chicago School of economics has had over the economics profession.

At a minimum, the book is worth the purchase price because of it's witty treatment of the "inside baseball" of academic life and frank description of the intellectual atmosphere at the University of Chicago. As an example, the letter exchange between Frank Knight and Paul Douglas reprinted beginning on page 183 should not be missed (no synopsis here can do it justice). Nor should the reader miss the description detailed in Chapter 5 ("Eureka") of how Ronald Coase, in one evening, turned the entire Chicago economics department from critics to supporters of what is now called the "Coase Theorem."

4 out of 5 stars EASY TO READ, INTERESTING HISTORY OF RECENT ECONOMIC THOUGHT.......2004-04-03

Stigler won the Nobel Prize in 1982 for his work on antitrust and the role of information in the economy. He was one of the founders of the renowned Chicago School of economic thought, whose most famous member was Milton Friedman. Stigler traces the origins of the Chicago School in this easy to read, non academic memoir. He also tells a bit of personal history, but his main focus is on the analysis of thought evolution in economics.

Overall, I thought this was a nice concise book. With only about 200 pages, the author surely measured his words. This is not a book about economics (though there is a little bit in it), but mainly a book on economic thought.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, accessible style, humorous--a must read for all.......1997-04-04

Nobel prize-winning author George Stigler provides insight into the working of a great mind and the notorious "Chicago School" of economics. Worthwhile for its presentation of the human side of the "dismal science" as well as its clear explanation of basic concepts of Stigler's economic theory. Stigler holds nothing back and delivers a frank and modest account of his life and dealings with other prominent economists

        Book Description

Interest in phytoremediation as a solution for contaminants in groundwater and soil has exploded. The project documented in Phytoremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils presents innovative technology for environmental clean up using in situ treatment. It describes the results of a field study focusing on hydrocarbon contamination, especially polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, in surface and near surface soils. The field demonstration used soils contaminated with aged diesel fuels. The random block design enabled the investigators to test the statistical difference in the effects of different vegetated and unvegetated treatments. They tested the degradation of diesel and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon components in plots containing three different vegetation treatments, two grasses and a legume, and a non-vegetated control. Part one of the monograph gives a complete and thorough account of the results of the field study. Part two covers the design and potential costs of a full-scale implementation of the demonstration system as well as the performance and potential application of the new technology. Phytoremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils supplies quantitative results about the use of vegetation in soil remediation. The information given on the niches and limitations of the technologies allows for a more informed selection of remedial solutions for environmental cleanup.

          Description:
A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted for investigating the capability of a grass (annual ryegrass), a legume (summer vetch), and a crucifer (white mustard) to grow in a soil with portions from a former coal gasification site, influence the soil bacterial community, and promote the biodegradation of petrol hydrocarbons (PHCs). Soil concentrations of 1517mgkg^-^1 of total petrol hydrocarbons (TPHs), including 71.4mgkg^-^1 of total US EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (TPAHs) have caused a significant (P <0.05) reduction in shoot and root dry matter yields by more than 50%. Culturable bacteria and actinomycetes in soil were as much as 18-fold more abundant and the species composition was largely altered because of PHC contaminants and depending on crop species and age. After 95 days, 68.7% of initial TPH amounts and 59% of the TPAHs had disappeared from unplanted soil. Mustard and vetch fostered the removal of PHCs from soil reaching final TPH concentrations that were 15.6% and 12% lower than in unplanted soil. Both crops elicited the greatest degradative root activities and sustained particularly great populations of rhizosphere bacteria that are known hydrocarbon degraders. None of the crops aided the reduction of TPAHs in soil.

            Description:
The relevance of germination trials for screening plants that may have potential for use in the phytoremediation of PAH contaminated land was evaluated. The germination and subsequent growth of 7 grass and legume species were evaluated in soil spiked with a pure PAH mixture or coal tar and soil from a former coking plant heavily contaminated with aged PAHs. None of these treatments adversely affected germination of the plants. However, apart from Lolium perenne all species exhibited reduced growth in the coking plant soil after 12 weeks growth when compared to the untreated soil. In the coal tar spiked soil 4 out of the 7 species showed reduced growth, as did 3 out of the 7 in the soil spiked with a mixture of 7 PAHs. Therefore, germination studies alone would not predict the success of subsequent growth of the species tested in the ranges of soil PAH levels studied. d.

              Description:
The impact of recalcitrant organic compounds on soil hydrophobicity was evaluated in contaminated soil from a manufactured gas plant site following 12 months of phytoremediation. Significant reduction in soil wetting and water retention was observed in contaminated soil compared to an uncontaminated control. Phytoremediation was effective at reducing total PAHs by 69% with corresponding changes in soil classification from extremely hydrophobic (initial sample) to moderately-strongly hydrophobic (planted) and hydrophilic-very hydrophilic (unplanted) after 12 months. The greatest reduction in soil hydrophobicity was observed in the unplanted, unfertilized treatments that had the lowest removal rate of PAHs. The presence of plants may contribute to hydrophobicity in contaminated soil.

                Description:
To improve phytoremediation processes, multiple techniques that comprise different aspects of contaminant removal from soils have been combined. Using creosote as a test contaminant, a multi-process phytoremediation system composed of physical (volatilization), photochemical (photooxidation) and microbial remediation, and phytoremediation (plant-assisted remediation) processes was developed. The techniques applied to realize these processes were land-farming (aeration and light exposure), introduction of contaminant degrading bacteria, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), and plant growth of contaminant-tolerant tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). Over a 4-month period, the average efficiency of removal of 16 priority PAHs by the multi-process remediation system was twice that of land-farming, 50% more than bioremediation alone, and 45% more than phytoremediation by itself. Importantly, the multi-process system was capable of removing most of the highly hydrophobic, soil-bound PAHs from soil. The key elements for successful phytoremediation were the use of plant species that have the ability to proliferate in the presence of high levels of contaminants and strains of PGPR that increase plant tolerance to contaminants and accelerate plant growth in heavily contaminated soils. The synergistic use of these approaches resulted in rapid and massive biomass accumulation of plant tissue in contaminated soil, putatively providing more active metabolic processes, leading to more rapid and more complete removal of PAHs.

                  Description:
Two greenhouse pot experiments were conducted to investigate the potential of 13 plant species (grasses, cruciferes, legumes, herbs) to thrive in a long-term contaminated soil from a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) site, to promote the proliferation of total and aromatic ring dioxygenase-expressing bacteria (ARDB) in the root zone, and to foster the biodegradation of petrol hydrocarbons (PHCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PHCs at 23200mgkg^-^1 and PAHs at 2194mgkg^-^1 reduced seed germination, plant survival, and shoot yields for most plants. Total bacteria and ARDB were generally more abundant in contaminated soil and were most numerous in the rhizosphere of mustard. During 68d, the loss of total petrol hydrocarbons (TPHs) and total US EPA priority PAHs (TPAHs) was greatest in soil planted with hemp and mustard. Pea, cress, and pansy increased the amounts of PAHs extracted from soil, including an almost 60% increase for dibenzo(ah)anthracene. Plants may enhance the chemical extractability and perhaps biological availability of initially unextractable molecules.

                    Description:
The efficiency of rhizosphere biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons heterogeneously distributed in soils is dependent on the ability of plant roots to prospect into contaminated zones. Rhizobox experiments were conducted to study the influence of diesel contaminated layers on the spatial distribution and the development of the roots of perennial ryegrass. Root distribution and root and shoot development were monitored over time. The final root and above ground biomass and the final TPH concentration were determined. The spatial distribution of the contaminant as well as the irrigation method used affected root distribution, plant development and TPH degradation and therefore ryegrass remediation potential. The results show that roots colonise fully uncontaminated soil and grow preferentially between zones of contamination. Conversely, when no immediate uncontaminated soil is available, roots grow through contaminated zones in order to prospect for uncontaminated soil.

                      Book Description

The young psychiatrist from Budapest had studied medicine in Vienna, he had read The Interpretation of Dreams, and now he was about to meet its author. Seventeen years Sigmund Freud's junior, Sándor Ferenczi (1873-1933) sent off a note anticipating the pleasure of the older man's acquaintance--thus beginning a correspondence that would flourish over the next twenty-five years, and that today provides a living record of some of the most important insights and developments of psychoanalysis, worked out through the course of a deep and profoundly complicated friendship.

This volume opens in January of 1908 and closes on the eve of World War I. Letter by letter, a "fellowship of life, thoughts, and interests" as Freud came to describe it, unfolds here as a passionate exchange of ideas and theories. Ferenczi's contribution to psychoanalysis was, Freud said, "pure gold," and many of the younger man's notions and concepts, proposed in these letters, later made their way into Freud's works on homosexuality, paranoia, trauma, transference, and other topics. To the two men's mutual scientific interests others were soon added, and their correspondence expanded in richness and complexity as Ferenczi attempted to work out his personal and professional conflicts under the direction of his devoted and sometimes critical elder colleague.

Here is Ferenczi's love for Elma, his analysand and the daughter of his mistress, his anguish over his matrimonial intentions, his soliciting of Freud's help in sorting out this emotional tangle--a situation that would eventually lead to Ferenczi's own analysis with Freud. Here is Freud's unraveling relationship with Jung, documented through a heated discussion of the events leading up to the final break. Amid these weighty matters of heart and mind, among the psychoanalytic theorizing and playful speculation, we also find the lighter stuff of life, the talk of travel plans and antiquities, gossip about friends and family. Unparalleled in their wealth of personal and scientific detail, these letters give us an intimate picture of psychoanalytic theory being made in the midst of an extraordinary friendship.

                        Book Description

A detailed introduction to the methods used by ecologists--classification and ordination--to clarify and interpret large, unwieldy masses of multivariate field data. Permits ecologists to understand, not just mechanically use, pre-packaged programs for multivariate analysis. Demonstrates these techniques using artificial data simple enough for every analytical step to be understood.

This book provides a good overview of the UFC since it's beginnings, providing a summary of how the sport got started and has evolved, the styles of fighting and profiles of various fighters. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as good or thorough as "Brawl", which is also written by Erich Krauss. Also many of the same fighters profiled in this book are profiled in 'Brawl,' so a lot of the information repeats itself. I also found it somewhat unusual that one of the fighters featured in this book was Carlos Newton. While he's certainly talented and an interesting character, it seems there are other fighters who would be more likely choices (i.e.- Phil Baroni and Evan Tanner who are on the cover).
That said, I can recommend this to any UFC fan, or anyone interested in learning more about the sport and some of the fighters. It's a quick read at just over 150 pages, also features some high quality photos.

Stephen Spignesi worte the Stephen King Encylopedia, a book I still read a couple of times a month. He knows his subject and is rather talented as a writer himself. If you've seen the encyclopedia then you've read excerpts of King's immature work. This book concentrates on the lost works : the material King did as a raw kid (This isn't a put down. King's youthful stuff shows that even then he had gift)but don't forget that this is all material that he chose not to publsih or stuck in a drawer somewhere.

The Lost Work is really for totally devoted fans, the people who will buy anything that has King's name on it or in it. The rest of us probably won't be as enamored.

4 out of 5 stars A useful book about the working method of the Maestro.......2001-06-16

This book does not contain any complete work by Stephen King, but it explores many texts or other works that are little known and that are at times difficult to find. It sums up the texts, works, stories, etc, gives the starting line and at times the punch line, analyzes these works and evaluates the chances one may have to get them. Some of these works are nowadays more readily available than said in the book. It is the case of « L.T.'s Theory of Pets » that has been published in an audio cassette version as read by Stephen King himself in London in 1998 (Stephen King Live !, 1999) or of « Lunch at the Gotham Café » read by the author and published in the form of a CD audiobook (Blood and Smoke, 2000). This book gives some insight on how Stephen King works by exemplifying working or alternative versions of some books we know, and by also covering some rare pieces that show how adventurous and compulsive a writer he may be. I particularly appreciate the column he has in The Maine Campus from february 1969 to may 1970. A must, in other words, for the students of Stephen King's works, the Stephen King literate and the Stephen King lovers. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, Paris Universities II and IX.

3 out of 5 stars Well, it's for fans, innit.......2001-03-11

SHORT: Fans only, I'd say. For them it may be essential, although the writing style is probably offputting for some. LONG: I found this book quite entertaining due to its contents. (Remember that the "complete" SK encyclopedia by the same author a couple of years back was largely confined to fiction.) Spignesi traces many items in the King universe that are obscure and difficult (impossible in some cases) to obtain. If you want to read about rare newspaper appearances, juvenilia, crosswords, and the like (i.e., if you're a die-hard King fanatic like me), you'll probably want to buy this book - although Tyson Blue covered a fair amount of the rare stuff until 1989 in his UNSEEN KING (starmont). I have to say, though, that I find Spignesi's style of writing, like that of Blue earlier, a little off-putting. It is clear that he is enthusiastic about King and his work, ephemeral as some of the pieces discussed in this book may sometimes be. But there is a line, I think, between unobtrusive and still informative prose (like that of Winter and Collings, who write a carefully measured prose but are still fun to read) and a style that may at best be described as chatty and informal, at worst as annoying fannish hyperbole. The more's the pity since this book could have been so much more - if you're looking for critical discussions that go beyond the superficial, I guess you better stick with the many works of Collings. With a subject matter like this it's inevitable that some customers may be disappointed not to actually get to read some of these "oddities," but with the help of the internet it is possible to collect rare King texts, at least, on a beer budget. And then there is, of course, the BOMC collection SECRET WINDOWS, where you might start to gather a couple of rare pieces. All in all, I'd rank it 3 out of 5.
