Book Description

World oil is transitioning from a market driven by consumer demand to one limited by producer capacity. As a result, oil exporting countries are now able to control the price and the availability of an increasingly scarce commodity. Corporate behavior, government action, cultural stability, economics, legal agreements, geography, weather, crude oil transportation, military diplomacy and the always potent combination of religion and politics are now more important than geology in developing oil production forecasts. The approaching oil crisis will have a global reach, impacting the economic and cultural health of every nation. Because they have the most energy intensive economies, however, the industrial nations of North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim will suffer the greatest deterioration. We can either try to manage a "soft landing" or let nature take its course. Doing something means encouraging new attitudes about fuel production and consumption. If we do nothing, chronic recession is probable. Economic depression is possible. This research report provides a comprehensive examination of oil reserves and production, reviews the cultural challenges of the Middle East, analyzes the economic impact of four alternative oil depletion scenarios, and outlines a proposed course of action to enable a "soft landing". World oil production and consumption are evaluated by geographic region. This evaluation, along with a projection of how oil depletion could influence inflation, unemployment, economic growth and the price of gas, is presented in 8 tables and 32 charts.

5 out of 5 stars Sobering and Helpful..from a guy on the street........2005-01-25

The energy industry is huge. Energy policy is multifaceted, complex and boring (to the guy on the street). There are many voices and points of view. This book is like a "Reader's Digest" on what the layman needs to know, the Truth on what the layman needs to know, about the future of the world's oil supply. I like the candidness and narrative style. He seems to be skeptical that anyone will read and respond to the information he presents, and to include that as part of the "problem" is great. I will try to respond. Everyone needs to read this...and respond.

Book Description

This text offers a comprehensive and original introduction to organization theory and is designed to provide an even handed, balanced appreciation of the different perspectives that have contributed to our knowledge about organizations. The text's approach is pluralist, reflecting the diverse nature of organizational theory as a field of study influenced by thinkers from a variety of academic disciplines. Specifically, perspectives described as `modern', `symbolic-interpretive' and `postmodern' frame the analysis. Students are encouraged to `adopt' these perspectives to expand their own view and to enhance their understanding. A key question addressed throughout the text is the nature of the relationship between organizational theories and the reality these theories describe. Organization Theory is in three parts: * Part 1 introduces the multi-perspective approach * Part 2 explores the ways in which organizations are analysed - as entities within an environment; as subjects of strategic action; as technologies; as social structures; as cultures; and as physical structures * Part 3 covers topics of central importance in organizational theory including decision-making, power, conflict, control and change within organizations. To aid learning the text offers many diagrammatical and conceptual models and each chapter includes a summary, a list of key terms and pointers to further reading.

I'm not sure how attention grabbing org theory can be, but this book was very informative and understandable. The chapters are a nice size, and the summaries are useful.

5 out of 5 stars Doctoral research material.......2001-08-29

Hatch writes in a consise and informative manner. It is not the type of writing that you wonder what you just read. Her writing holds the reader's interest by keeping her style uncomplicated in word and thought. The breath of orgainzational information is outstanding and the depth of each topic seems to be at a level to keep you reading but not overloaded and bored. Highly recommended for org research.

5 out of 5 stars How to look at organizations?.......2000-10-24

The book is an academic level state-of-the-art of organization theory. Definitely the best contemporary book in the field - suitable for all the students, but also for academics and practitioners. It covers both historical and current issues. Though pretty comprehesive, still comprehendable. In lay man language Hatch writes about most difficult issues of organization theory - structure, environment, culture, etc. are all covered, usually with some alternative perspectives (e.g. 'organizational culture' is described also from postmodern and symbolic perspectives, current books and papers are referred etc.).

4 out of 5 stars MUCH less painful than others on this subject.......2007-09-09

This book is very readable. Some of the books and papers on organizational theory are so dense that they are practically unreadable. This one effectively conveys the information the author wants you to understand. This is not a pointless book. I can't say that about most of the others I've had to read on organizational theory.

4 out of 5 stars Organization Theory Resource.......2007-07-21

This book is required reading for a graduate OD course I completed this summer. Using the organizational theory perspectives of modernist, symbolic and post modernist, the author carefully guides and builds on theories that support these perspectives. In the end, it give professional change experts a foundation for recommendations. I will continue to use this book as a reference for my internal and external OD/OT work.

5 out of 5 stars Something Not For The Literal-Minded.......2001-06-17

I've often referred to Edward Edinger as "the primier theologian of Jungian psychology." By this, I don't mean that Edinger knows a lot about theology (which he does). Rather, I mean that Edinger is one of those earlier Jungians who accepted Jung's views as gospel facts to be believed. Fortunately, he was also a highly intelligent man who was capable of expounding the details of Jung's personal psychology. Many of his books explored various aspects of Western myth and religion. THE CHRISTIAN ARCHETYPE is one of the few that looked at New Testament themes. It's deceptively brief. None of the individual chapters gets hugely into depth. But, Edinger subtly pulls the rug out from under the expected interpretation of these scenes from the life of Jesus.

Edinger, you may know, was raised a Jehovah's Witness, and thus he was steeped in the kind of purely literal interpretation of the Bible that most American Christianity promotes. So, it's long been of interest to me that he ended up a Jungian analyst, on the far other end of the spectrum, examining the purely symbolic meaning of religion. Whether one is or isn't a believer is really irrelevent when approaching this material. Adding the symbolic to your current world view will create a more balanced whole. Yes, and it also makes life remarkably more interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Christian symbolism in a nut shell.......2000-08-17

If you wants to understand the symbolism of the christian myth and don't want to spend hours reading in depth, this is your book It answers the question, what is the point of Christ's message from Jungs perspective, writings and indepth study. Dr. Edinger has many other books that go much deeper if your curiosity is tweaked. If anyone understood the complex implications and meaning of the "archetype" as Jung used it, it would be Dr. Edinger He tries to reach a audience with varying degrees of exposure to Jungian ideas. He should be applauded for that effort. I realize he doesn't need me to champion his work.. But I will anyway. In the Swedish review previous to mine Dr. Edinger is accused of perhaps being a "lazy dog". Well, perhaps the writer should read Dr. Edinger's writing that speaks to the reality of projection in the psyche. I am a christian and I loved the book.

1 out of 5 stars A superficial book conveying a reductive view of Christendom.......1998-08-24

According to Edinger the individual ego is the the stable wherein the Christ-child is born. That view can turn the stomach on any Christian or Jungian. Edinger is not really a Jungian. He says in the book: (ch."Resurrection..." concerning Paulus''heavenly body' (my tr. from Swedish))

"My own hypothesis is that they mean the goal of individuation, i.e the transformation of the personal ego to archetype".

That the personal ego should transform to an archetype does certainly not comply with Jungian theory. This is not how archetypes form.

The book is not much more than a compilation of excerpts from the Bible, Jung's books, etcetera. The author does some amplification, but he omits discussing to any depth the intriguing theological and psychological implications of the Passion of Christ. This book was not at all needed. He must have been a lazy dog, this Edward F. Edinger. Any student of Comparative History of Religion could have created this little compilation in a few days. It is not worth the money. If you are a Christian it will hurt your religious feelings. If you are a Jungian it will hurt your intellect.

This book explains the inside zone to the TE and away from the TE. It also does the outside zone, misdirection, traps, naked boot legs, play actions and other stuff. I really enjoyed reading this book. This will be a book I review each season before we start pratice.

1 out of 5 stars Explanation of blocking mechanics is missing.......2006-12-18

Buying this book, I was hoping to get an understanding of the body mechanics involved in zone blocking schemes. Unfortunately, this book makes the assumption that the reader is already knowledgeable of the mechanics, e.g. of the drop step and the bucket step. It isn't untill page 56 that you will find a diagram on these steps; however the so called 'decision step', which is illustrated in one of the diagrams, looks like an alignment of two feet which a ballet dancer would have difficulties to perform.
With 20+ years of football experience, I thought I had heard most of the football terminology and expressions. But terms introduced in this book, such as 'one or two hand punch', 'knee the defender', 'lift and strain', 'displace, distort and stretch the defender', pester, and waddle, are not explained nor visualized. Without prior understanding of these terms, this books is not very usefull. It seems that the good point of this book is the variety of zone blocking schemes out of different formations vs. multiple defenses.

5 out of 5 stars In depth and complete.......2006-04-03

If you ever wondered what football commentators meant by "zone blocking" this book goes into the details of what that means.

It describes the two bread and butter running plays and how the blocking scheme adjusts to multiple defensive fronts. If you understand anything about football's finer points, it's a lead pipe cinch that Coaching Football's Zone Offense will connect the dots in this approach to offensive football.

5 out of 5 stars First hand experience.......2003-06-26

I attended school and took many classes from Coach Z. To say he's a zone fanatic is an understatement. The man teaches this in such a simple way, he makes it seem like it's the only way to block.

I've heard people say that it's hard to teach, but with the built in rules and assigned zones, I think it's easier than a man blocking system. There's never a question with this system of who has what area or who takes who on a stunt. If kids understand the fundamentals of the system, everything comes naturally. Most high schools in the southern part of our state use this system without problems teaching the kids.

        Coach K.

        4 out of 5 stars Great job of breaking-down a good scheme........1999-06-01

The authors of this book did a really good job of explaining the assignments for every offensive player on their base plays, the Inside Zone, and the Outside Zone.

"The 3-3-5 Defense" is by far the best book that Leo Hand has written. It covers player assignments, techniques, drills, coaching terminology, and lots of diagrams, It is easy to read and well written.

His football terminology maybe a little too much for a new coach, however, all you have to do is look at the diagrams and you will see what he is talking about. A must buy book for any football coach that wants to run the 3-3-5 Defense.

If you're an English language teacher stuck in classrooms with 20 plus students for 30-40 hours a week and your text is a disaster your whole life can be hell. You hate your work and your students hate you. What do you do? Teach something else ? But in the end you always have to come back to the text... This has been the dilemma for teachers at my school over the last few years. While Interchange 1 was pretty good and Interchange 2 OK Interchange 3 was a nightmare-the more so as we realized the weakness was in the book and not in our teaching. So New Interchange 3 is something of a revelation- the changes in this book are not merely cosmetic, they are extensive. The layout and presentation of the grammar is sometimes so good I am in awe of how good this is and how bad the original book was. You realize there is real art to writing an English language teaching book- an art only really appreciated by the hands-on teacher. The other stunning improvement in this book is the content. It's so much more interesting, more contemporary, relevant and personal. So on 2 counts; grammar presentation and content this book is a winner. It's only on the third pillar of communicative language teaching- activities- that there is a weakness. The "Teacher's" book is lazy, unimaginative and unhelpful most of the time. A teacher needs to look elsewhere or in his or her own head for activities. Nonetheless, the improvements in NEW INTERCHANGE 3 are such that I can walk into a classroom with enthusiasm rather than dread.

            Book Description

Robert Frank is one of the most influential of all post-war photographers. Pioneering a revolutionary approach to photography and filmmaking, he combines autobiographical and poetic elements to produce straight black-and-white images that transcend the specific. Speaking of universal experience, Frank has said, "I'm trying to forget easy photo, trying to make something from within." He adds, "Time moves on and never stops or waits." Often involving a progression through a series of images, his work is structured like a musical sequence, creating storylines that resonate beyond the frozen moment of any single photograph. Storylines accompanies an exhibition highlighting Frank's experimental use of narrative in photography and film. The exhibition consists of his films and photographs, including Polaroids, contact sheets, and recent digital stills. Photographs from locations as diverse as Peru, London, Wales, Coney Island, and Chicago, appear along with several artist's books.

5 out of 5 stars A story with no lines.......2005-08-18

In this book, Frank photographically explores America and Europe from 1950-2003. The book is limited in text but reads as almost a journal of Franks travels. The cities he chooses to highlight feature black and white photographs that give insight into Frank's perspective on the city. Frank covers the hazy streets of London with petty coats and top hats to soot covered coal miners of Whales to the commercialized America filled with advertisements and coffee shops. Franks photography is silent as he captures people in their element. No posed glamour shots or sun kissed landscapes, but real people in their everyday environment.
Frank's photographic style is almost documentary in respect. His photographs seem as almost proof of his whereabouts rather than an art form. Every page is filled with candid pictures like the factory workers in Detroit or the 1956 Chicago Democratic Convention. Each picture alone is not anything out of the ordinary but when bound together in a book, it becomes extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting New Robert Frank Book!!.......2005-01-05

This book is not hardcover (although it is not exactly typical softcover either). Instead, it has a flexible, durable plastic cover that seems pretty unique. The book itself is a catalog from the current Robert Frank exhibit at the Tate in London, but Frank himself helped put it together and you can tell. I think it is his most exciting book in years, probably since "The Lines of My Hand," although "Moving Out" was very comprehensive. If you are already a Robert Frank fan, I suspect you will NOT be disappointed by "Storylines." If you don't know who he is, check out "The Americans" first because that is his most important book, followed by "Lines of My Hand." I've never seen a good many of the images in "Storylines" before, and I've been absorbing everything I could of Robert Frank's work since 1987, so this is a worthwhile addition to my collection.
