      Book Description

This work demonstrates how the 'knowledge economy' can be seen in a new light when considered from a complexity perspective. It stresses the imporance of relationships as a source of - and influence on - information and knowledge creation.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Explains novelty in organizations.......2007-01-09

First, this is the second book in a series edited by edited by Stacey, Griffin, and Patricia Shaw from the Complexity and Management Centre, University of Hertfordshire
      * Complexity and Management - Fad or Radical Challenge to Systems Thinking (2000) - Stacey, Griffin, Shaw
      * Complex Responsive Processes in Organizations - Learning and Knowledge Creation (2001) - Stacey
      * Changing Conversations in Organizations: A Complexity Approach to Change (2002) - Shaw
      * The Emergence of Leadership (2002) - Griffin
      * Complexity and Innovation in Organizations (2002) - Fonseca
      * The Paradox of Control in Organizations (2001) -- Streatfield
The series intention is to develop thinking about organizations as Complex Processes of relating vs. as systems. In doing this, the authors clearly expose the failure of mainstream management thinking to explain strategic and organizational phenomena. In place of systemic (mainstream) thinking, are insights gained from complexity science that have been developed into the complex responsive process perspective. This perspective does descriptively address strategic and organizational phenomena and serves as a basis for prescriptive actions. See my review of Complexity and Management.

Second, as with the first book in the series, this is not a book to be "read", it is a book to be "studied." It delves deeply into learning and knowledge creation, the creation of knowledge being the creation of novelty. The radically different views of knowledge between cognitive and behavioral psychology is illuminating.

Stacey offers philosophical, neuroscience, and social science support for the legitimacy of the complex responsive process perspective over the mainstream management thinking. The book is, for the most part, descriptive. There is a comprehensive comparison of the systems thinking and complex responsive process perspectives in the ninth chapter based on what's in the first two books in the series. The tenth and last chapter outlines what the prescriptions might look like. These prescriptions are in the next four books in the series.

The core of this book hones in on learning and knowledge creation, knowledge creation being essential to organization innovation and evolution. The first section deals with the systems thinking perspective. There is a strong case made for the inability of that perspective to explain knowledge creation as well as some insidious aspects of management based on this perspective. The next section provides a comprehensive and robust explanation of the emergence of knowledge from the complex responsive processes of relating.

As in the first book, the content, issues addressed, the perspectives developed are worthy of more than a five star rating. And again, given the newness and challenging nature of the content, the repetition, or repetitive summaries, throughout the book were welcome. The reason for rating it four stars is due to the need to study it so intently in order to gain the understanding of what the author has to tell us. As in the first book in the series, more and better frameworks could have been provided for the information delivered. Given my intense interest in the subject, I developed several of my own frameworks to organize the content in order to gain greater benefit from the information provided.

        Book Description

In order to keep track of all the compounds and pathogens affecting plant metabolism and development, you would need to spend all your waking hours combing periodicals and the Internet in dozens of languages, as new toxins via pollutants and migratory or mutant pathogens are being discovered every day. Plant Toxicology, Fourth Edition starts with a basic overview of the plant as a complex living organism. The first chapters introduce plant structure and organization. Starting with the cell as the smallest elementary unit, the emphasis is on plant-specific features with respect to their susceptibility to environmental contaminants. Hock and Elstner, who between them have published over 500 original papers on plants and plant disease, called upon experts from across the world to contribute to this essential text. The book analyzes processes central to plant metabolism, including uptake, distribution, and secretion of toxic material, and focuses on the recognition and prevention of damage associated with environmental pollutants. It studies diseases caused by viruses, subviral organisms, phytoplasmas, fungal and bacterial pathogens. Learn about Pathology in Plants as an Integral Interconnected Facet of their Environment The text is designed to enable you to classify and target specific forms of plant damage. Equally important, it never loses sight of the princple that plants are not isolated organisms, but rather exist as participants in complex environments, which must be taken into account when studying the delivery and impact of toxins. Supplying more than 1500 current references, Plant Toxicology, Fourth Edition is required reading for all plant, crop, soil, and environmental scientists; botanists; agronomists; agriculturists; horticulturists; biochemists; foresters; plant growers; and upper level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines. Book Description

This book explains the role of simple biological model systems in the growth of molecular biology. Essentially the whole history of molecular biology is presented here, tracing the work in bacteriophages in E. coli, the role of other prokaryotic systems, and also the protozoan and algal models - Paramecium and Chlamydomonas, primarily - and the move into eukaryotes with the fungal systems - Neurospora, Aspergillus and yeast. Each model was selected for its appropriateness for asking a given class of questions, and each spawned its own community of investigators. Some individuals made the transition to a new model over time, and remnant communities of investigators continue to pursue questions in all these models, as the cutting edge of molecular biological research flowed onward from model to model, and onward into higher organisms and, ultimately, mouse and man.

The Microbial Models of Molecular Biology, From Genes to Genomes. Rowland H. Davis, Oxford University Press, 2003.

Despite the amazing diversity, most agree that when reduced to the level of cells and molecules, all living things, including plants, animals and microbes, are basically the same. In the quest to understand complex biological phenomena such as the control of cell division, organelle assembly and their inheritance, development, behavior, aging and death of organisms, or the process of speciation, scientists have turned to microbes. This seems quite sensible to do, for microbes can be grown cheaply in test tubes or flasks occupying small space, subjected to all kinds of environmental stresses, and the results of researchers distributed in different geographical locations compared and inferences drawn. Whenever a microbe is found displaying a phenomenon similar to that in a higher organism, it is chosen for research. In this book Rowland H. Davis demonstrates how life processes, notwithstanding their complexity, are being unraveled by investigations of microbial models. And he does so very admirably, for he has witnessed some important players in major research centers, listened to them when fresh findings were made in the last century during which time more of biology was being learnt than in all the previous years. Thus this book gives not only the scientific facts but also the controversies surrounding them. Davis makes the history of biology come alive by recounting personalities of some of its players. The explanation of biological problems and the easy flow of prose make the book very absorbing. The size of the book makes it easy to carry it and read it wherever and whenever. - Ramesh Maheshwari, Bangalore, India.

Cliff does a great job of introducing the area and providing good basic information on canoe camping. He also stresses the importance of proper techniques to limit the human impact to this natural national treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book Filled With Excellent Tips on Canoe Camping!.......2000-03-13

Before setting out on our first trip to the BWCA five years ago, I bought Cliff's book. I read it cover to cover and found it packed with practical information that helped make my first trip (and all my subsequent trips) completely enjoyable. I've re-read the book every year since. I've followed Cliff's tips, and he's never let me down. Yes, put the groundcloth inside your tent, and you'll never have a wet sleeping bag. Use a tumpline when portaging .... it relieves a the stress of carrying a heavy pack. Don't hang your food in a tree, unless you want a bear to to find it! Follow Cliff's tips. I've heard him speak on the subject of canoe camping several times...and he brings many years of valuable experience. I highly recommend reading this book before taking your next canoe/camping trip!

5 out of 5 stars Boundary Waters Canoe Camping...With Style.......2000-01-26

An excellent book for anyone who is interested in canoeing, camping or the B.W.C.A. Timely information for the first timer in the BWCA or for those that have made many trips. Well written and illustrated. A must for the Boundary Water traveler!

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspective.......2000-01-21

Reading the other reviews submitted about this book, one would think that it is either the best or the worst book ever written about the special requirements of canoe camping in the boundary waters. Well, it is neither. I take a 14-plus day trip to the Quetico every other summer, and have travelled many of the most challenging and remote routes of the park. The value of this book is that it offers one set of ideas as to the best way to go about one's business in the wilderness. These ideas are not definitive, and I flatly ignore many of them. That said, I have also adopted some of the ideas found in the book, or at least reconsidered my tried and true methods based on some of the author's recommendations. If you're looking for a book to stimulate you to think about different ways of doing things in the woods-- this is a good choice. If you're a beginner, this isn't a bad place to start, but it would be a bad place to stop. There are as many different ways to go about travelling in canoe country as there are lakes in the Quetico. Almost all have something to offer. None are perfect. This book is worth reading as part of the exploration and learning process.

4 out of 5 stars A fine introduction to the Boundary Waters.......2000-01-12

The one star reviews on this page are very misleading. Cliff Jacobson does recommend useful equipment but is hardly a shill for manufacturers -- no specific brands are mentioned, but helpful ideas and a long life as a paddler and instructor are put forward in this fine introduction to the Boundary Waters. This book is an introduction, and it is highly recommended by many outfitters in the Boundary Waters. It gives just enough information to aid in planning a trip to the area, but the expert with plenty of canoeing experience will probably want to look into Jacobson's other books, which are equally well written and researched. In planning my second trip to the Boundary Waters, I found the book helpful and useful -- it has none of the fluff intimated by some of the other reviewers on this page. I found the book a good, solid investment.

                    5 out of 5 stars Word Painting.......2007-10-09

This author's writing is exciting to read. I've learned more from reading this book than any other writing books that I've read.

                    1 out of 5 stars Here's an adjective: Yuck.......2006-04-03

Weak, unconsidered, cliche ridden, mundane, obvious, repetitive -- How are those for a few descriptions? Well, they fit. This is not a good book. She repeats the most obvious and then repeats them again (where was the editor?). Some facts are just wrong, such as most scholars see simile and metaphor as the same. I am sure those who say they "highlighted" it or "read it over and over" must either have been dreaming or reading a different book. It's one long bad Writers Magazine article, one that says, Hey try using "carmine" instead of "red." Try using a metaphor instead of simply saying it was "brown." Duh. Keep reading the reviews, past the ones her friends wrote and you'll see the real reviews -- it just is not a good book at all.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Reading Repeatedly.......2005-08-08

Word Painting was recommended by an excellent writer. I ended up reading the book, cover to cover, four times. Each time I came away with numerous fresh ideas. This book does more than lay down and explain a list of rules. It also draws from the works and advice of great authors in a way that makes reading the book enjoyable as well as instructive. Ms. McClanahan's own experiences, as related in the book, were particularly beneficial, often coming back to remind me how I could make the passage before me more palatable to the reader. The exercises were not as helpful to me as they might be for others, but they are marvelous drills for the more disiplined reader. Whether you want to improve your ability to write a novel, a report, a legal brief, a letter or an e-mail message, try this book!

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Writing Tool.......2005-04-19

Word Painting by Rebecca McClanahan is, without a doubt, one of the best writing related books I have ever purchased. Oh, other reference books have come and gone -- mostly to an auction site or a used bookstore -- but Word Painting is one that stays on my shelf and won't be going anywhere.

Is it a book heavy on technical information? Absolutely. At times it reads like a textbook for a writing class, so that might surprise some. But the more I read this book (and I go back to re-read it regularly) the more I learn. To say that Word Painting is merely a book that teaches you how to write more descriptively would be an injustice to the material contained inside.

Word Painting tackles all the standard writing "must knows" like tenses and points of view, moves on to the art of creating your own, unique similes and metaphors (avoiding the cliche), tackles passive vs. active & cluttered vs. uncluttered prose, then moves on to the biggies like setting, and how writing descriptively weaves into narration, description, and exposition to form the larger framework of your overall story...how writing descriptively affects your narrative voice.

McClanahan teaches you to look at the world, people and things around you with an "artist's" eye, noticing texture and sound and light, then guides you through translating what you see and hear and smell and touch onto the page in words so the reader can experience that with you.

Not only did this book teach me the importance of description and how it helps shape a story, it taught me the importance of all the various elements of fiction writing AND how to write them in a balance. Each chapter is full of useful information, but I'm not going to lie and say that it's not heavy reading. It is. But then writing is an art and a skill and it takes time, dedication, and the willingness to hone your skills into the craft. This is not light afternoon reading, and it's definitely a book you have to keep coming back to again and again because what you missed one time will click in the next, then something else the next. To me, that's an indispensable writing tool because it's not a one shot deal like so many other books that you buy, read once, then never read again. Word Painting -- like your writing -- is an evolving book that grows with you.

When people ask me for "how to write" book recommendations, Word Painting is first (and often only) book that comes to mind.

                    2 out of 5 stars This Sucks.......2004-10-28

It is bloated. If there is any good information, its hidden very deep and i'm not patient enough to look for it. I want my money back.

                    Book Description

With The Brick Testament: Stories from the Book of Genesis, Brendan Smith reimagined ten classic Bible stories using nothing but LEGO bricks -- and the results were praised by everyone from People and Entertainment Weekly to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati (they've recommended the book to their entire congregation!). Publishers Weekly called it "hilarious" and wrote, "One rejoices that the franchise possibilities could extend for many years."
We couldn't agree more. Just in time for the holidays, Quirk Books is proud to present the best-known Bible story of all time: The Story of Christmas. Using verses from the New Testament and a series of elaborate LEGO dioramas, Smith illustrates the birth of Jesus Christ -- from his arrival in the manger to the wrath of King Herod and the famous visit from the three wise men. It's the perfect stocking stuffer for anyone who celebrates Christmas!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Lego fans.......2007-10-01

I bought this book (and the others by the same author) for my brother who is a huge Lego fan. He actually read them all and loved them, whereas before it was difficult to get him to read other books with kids' versions of Bible stories.

5 out of 5 stars The Good News.......2007-02-13

I'm sorry, but I must disagree with the reviewer below (Joshua C. Ternes "Good Guy")...this is not a waste of talent - it is a full embracing of talent. Not only is this book exceptionally well-photographed, it speaks the wonderful truth of the Bible. It is indeed not for children, any more than ANY visual re-telling of the Gospel would be, because the gospel has tragic events in it. But this book is an excellent tool for spreading the word. One can easily purchase a book for the purpose of handing it to someone who doesn't completely know the Gospel, and it will ensure that they read it.

For those that are not believers, they tend to not WANT to hear anything about the gospel (for numerous reasons), and this humorous - attractive - telling of the gospel breaks that barrier nicely.

I challenge the other Reviewer for Biblical basis against that.
I ask Joshua C. Ternes what he has done that has spread the good news so far?

2 out of 5 stars Not a childrens' portrayal of the Christmas story ..........2007-02-06

Do not assume, just because Legos are involved, that this is a book to share with young children. The Holy Ghost is a frightening character, circumcision is accomplished with a knife the size of the infant Jesus, and the illustration of Herod's order to slaughter all male infants less than two years of age is complete with decapitated infants in the background! Both frightening and disappointing!

1 out of 5 stars too graphic for kids.......2007-01-12

I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas and ended up returning it before I gave it to him. Luckily I looked through it before I wrapped it. I was a little too graphic with the blood and killing of babies and all. Might be OK for teenagers, they like that stuff. It was hard to see the cute little minifigs getting tortured.

                    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-10

Purchased for my husband for Christmas. (He works with lego robotics) My kids keep taking off with it and he hasn't even had a chance to read it yet.
                    Really cool book.
