The world is in the midst of an industrial and economic revolution more far-reaching than the one that transformed Europe and North America in the 19th century. According to William Greider, this revolution is a juggernaut that neither multinational corporations nor governments can control. Greider looks at the impact of the global revolution in terms of human struggle. While huge amounts of wealth are being generated, there is a downside, too: social dislocation; economic uncertainty; and the oldest, rawest form of exploitation--that of the weak by the strong. Greider proposes a number of steps governments of the world can take to avert disaster: moderate the flow of goods by imposing tariffs to rectify trade deficits, change labor practices in developing countries, and allow labor to share in the ownership of capital.

5 out of 5 stars The hobo philosopher.......2007-08-30

This is another one of those books that I picked up a a flea market for 50 cents. I had it sitting on a shelf for about six months before I finally took it down and read it. After I read the book I was so impressed, I felt that I wanted to tell the man personally how I felt. I found his web page and I sent him an email. He actually answered me. I then managed to sell the poor dude my two books "Hobo-ing America" and "A Summer with Charlie". I've got a copy of his check sitting in a file folder somewhere - of course I did cash it. This guy is great!. I have since read every book that he has written. If you want to know what is happening in the world economically, in simple, understandable, and entertaining language - this is your man. I keep checking Amazon to see if he's got another book coming out. I will buy it. I'm a Greider groupie!

5 out of 5 stars Business at any Cost.......2005-08-24

Greider states the progression of capital and it effect without regulation. The conduct of those today in the corporate state have the same character,as during the industrial Revolution.Keep in mind that US business in foreign nations profits by any means to cut cost. Also the boarder with Mexico is the best example for those who up hold the slave labor which has been pooring into the US because of trade agreements.Outsourcing started in the sixties. At that time the middleclass thought it would not effect them,so they did not care. There are many today who still think the same way.Jobs across the board are being taken by foreigners. This includes high tech. Are the middleclass upholding their income, are the middleclass doing better today in relation to income on a percent basis. Are there more or less middleclass, answer less, why.Because of outsourcing, and the increase of immigrants into US.

Being educated does not mean you are smart if it involves being brainwashed,For if you are you cannot see,and you will not act.The communist said we would bury ourselves, or words to that effect.

Greider gives you the history of why and how we are where we are.

To put it in simple terms.Reduce the cost of labor, sell on volume.Reduce the margin of profit, knockout the competition, and centralize the control of production, for what end, the new world order. One world, one culture, one king.Crazy, who says so.

The governments say they have to reduce the standard of living of the nations to compete with Asia, but they do not say that in plain words because they know you will not buy it.EU,France,Holland,no vote. They want a peoples bill of rights, why do you think they voted no.

Who owns the largest percent of US bonds, mutual funds are they invested internationally. What influence does this have, and there is no end to the selling of america, and the buying of america.

Do you really believe we have to expand, without Asia we are dead, it may be the reverse.Could the western nations get along without the business of Asia.Who benefits, and for how long, and at what cost Is europe getting along now without the EU vote no.

Greider explains what is going on.You have to sellout, find cheaper and cheaper, and cheaper labor, and if you do not do what business wants they will leave your country, and the country will lose money ,so the governments have to walk the line This means no benefits to people.Keep producing products at cheaper cost untill you sell at less than cost, and maybe you will go out of business, and in the mean time totally exploit the country.Who benefits.

Greider says this and much more in detail, the shame is that thoes who become aware generally say nothing,so what is the point. If you want to exist you have to make an effort.Banks lone money, and one could be a slave to them.Could the governments be acting like banks.Who is running the governments.Could it be banks.Redundant, and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Globalism at its worst.......2005-05-23

The negative reviewers and neocons would like to have you believe that everything is hunky dory thanks to globalism when in fact none of it is the case. There is good globalism where there broad prosperity for all and then there is unchecked globalism aka unchecked capitalism aka corporatism aka FASCISM where only the corporate dictators are prosperous. The reality, as Greider continuously hammers in this book, is that with the worst form of slavery and racism on the planet thanks to outsourcing and wars for profit, everyone including the U.S. is a LOSER in this worst form of global capitalism. I live in Utah and I got 20 hardcore conservatives interested in this book after I introduced it to them and now they're rethinking the current globalism that is killing mankind. For this reason alone, I strongly recommend this book. Don't just take back America. Take back democracy before it's too late past the point of no return !

Want to defeat one-sided governments like ours? Then read this book and fight back the politically inconsistent.

3 out of 5 stars Ready Or Not, It Won't Work........2005-04-03

A writer of note on various subjects from 'Rolling Stone', not exactly known for its intellectual content, he predicts that "one world" will leave no place to hide because the rain forests are shrinking as is. Without trees, pollution becomes more toxic. Recently, the U.S. courthouse here cut down 48 trees "for security" directly at the location where the city buses congregate and leave the motors running. This town is already so polluted, many of the residents have developed serious allergies.

When a nation becomes industrialized, the toxic refuse is dumped into the rivers and ocean. Where to ship the toxic wastes is a revolving problem. We are but thirty miles from Oak Ridge where they have nuclear waste products, constantly at our peril and on the roads to Utah or wherever. China and other places which are now making America's products will be choking on the polluted atmosphere. Perhaps they could ship it "down under" to Australia! Or to the remote areas of Russia? One World (ten years ago) is becoming a time bomb.

America has suffered economically by this global capitalism because Walmart (here it is called WallyWorld) and their cheap prices forced the U. S. to stop manufacturing and let China, India, Sri Lanka, and other cheap labor markets make inferior products. We used to have pride in our U.S. made appliances and clothing. Now, you have to search far and wide and still unsuccessfully for native-made, first quality merchandise. Even our foods are from other countries, store brands in particular, which could be contaminated.

This possible catastrophe is to offer lower income customers cheap prices. What we need to remember is "You get what you pay for." If you're happy with inferior products or possibly dangerous food items, you're taking chances. Today, instead of having an appliance repaired, it is cheaper to just buy a new one. The foreign made things have a short life span.

Big money hides itself in the global economy using tax havens. Social Security is in peril because the U. S. Government gives tax credits to the wealthy land developers who destroy the environment, causing more pollution. It's a shame.

                Book Description

The perspective of complex responsive processes draws on analogies from the complexity sciences, bringing in the essential characteristics of human agents, understood to emerge in social processes of communicative interaction and power-relating. The result is a way of thinking about life in organizations that focuses attention on how organizational members cope with unknown as they perpetually create organizational futures together.

Providing a natural successor to the Editors' earlier series (Complexity and Emergence in Organizations) this series Complexity as the Experience of Organizing, aims to take this work further by taking very seriously the experience of organizational practitioners, and showing how taking the perspective of complex responsive process yields deeper insight into practice and so develops that practice.

In this book, all of the contributors work as leaders, consultants or managers in organizations. They provide narrative accounts of their actual work addressing questions such as:
                · How do widespread or global patterns, such as government or corporate policies, emerge and evolve, in the local interactions between people?
                · What actually happens in global change programmes such as installing competencies, managing diversity and assuring quality?
                · What does this imply about the relationship between the local and the global?

In considering such questions in terms of their daily experience, the contributors explore how the perspective of complex responsive processes assists them to make sense of their experience and so to develop their practice. Experiencing Emergence in Organizations offers a different method for making sense of an experience in a rapidly changing world by using reflective accounts of ordinary everyday life in organizations rather than idealized accounts. The editors' commentary introduces and contextualizes these experiences as well as drawing out key themes for further research.

Experiencing Emergence in Organizations will be of value to readers from amongst those academics and business school students and practitioners who are looking for reflective accounts of real life experiences of researching in organizations rather than further prescriptions of what like in organizations ought to be like.

                    Book Description

During the past twenty years, our knowledge about expertise has dramatically increased. Laboratory analyses of chessmasters, experts in physics, medicine, international-level musicians, athletes, writers, and performance artists have allowed us to carefully examine the cognitive processes mediating outstanding performance in very diverse areas of expertise. These analyses have shown that expert performance is primarily a reflection of acquired skill resulting from the accumulation of domain-specific knowledge and methods during many years of training and practice rather than special innate talent. Confronted with universal limits of human information processing concerning memory capacity and speed of processing, expert performers are found to be able to acquire similar types of skills to circumvent these limits. General findings on expertise are systematized to lay the foundation of a general theory of expertise. In this book, many of the world's foremost scientists studying expert performance in specific domains of expertise review the state-of-the-art knowledge about expertise in these domains with the goal of identifying characteristics of expert performance that can be generalized across many different areas of expertise. These papers provide a comprehensive summary of general methods to study expertise and the current knowledge about expertise in chess, physics, medicine, sports, performing arts, music, writing, and decision-making. Most importantly, they reveal the existence of many general characteristics of expertise.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the most interesting work in psychology.......2006-10-09

Unfortunately for us, most work in psychology is either silly or uninteresting. Nobody cares much about the details of reaction times or about baseless speculation about underlying personality types. But Ericsson and his colleagues have set themselves a far more interesting problem: how do people are really good at something (experts) do it? Even better, they've made an impressive amount of progress.

The book surveys impressive studies in fields like chess, physics, medicine, sports, music, reading, writing, managing, etc., each one using interesting tricks and techniques to try to get at what makes experts tick. This book dates from the very beginning of the project, but the promise of the early results is evident and the cast of mind impressive.

                      5 out of 5 stars Informative!.......2007-03-09

This book is very informative. If you are just starting out, or considering trying you luck with a critter that maybe you have less experience with, then you will find this book very helpful. Chapter 12 is on firearms safety, 13 is on hunting ethics, and 14 (the last chapter) covers processing game and includes some interesting game recipes. I think there is a little something in this book for everyone that enjoys hunting and someone just beginning to take up hunting is sure to benefit the most. My teenage daughters recently expressed an interest in hunting (much to my surprise) and I bought this book hoping to find material that would cover a wide range on hunting topics. I hunt, but until this year never considered that my girls would have an interest in hunting and I neglected the opportunity of starting their hunting education earlier. I think this book is just what I was looking for and will be a great way to get them started, along with the basic hunters certification course and actual time in the field with dad. I highly recommend!

An excellent read with separate chapters on different species, including their natural histories and tactics. Gives clear and helpful advice on equipment, including calls and meat preparation. A great book for 'dipping into'.

                      Book Description

Now in a revised and updated edition, Phil Simonski's "Coyote Hunting" is probably the most thorough "How-to-do-it" book on coyote hunter ever written because in it the author tells you not only how to outsmart the wily critter in the field, but how to care for its precious pelt once you've taken it.

Chapters include Hunting the Coyote, A Little About the Critter, Rifles, Shotguns and All That Stuff, Planning the Trip, Locating Mr. 'Yote, Calls and Howlers, Where to Look and Not to Waste Your Time, Now That You've Got Him, What Next; and a special closing chapter on the possible surprises the coyote hunter might encounter. More than 80 excellent photographs illustrate the book.

The usefull info contained in this book can be condensed to about 5 pages and can be found on many coyote hunting websites. The rest of the words are there for the reader to stumble over and add volume to the book. In my humble opinion, this work is not worth more than about $5.00 compared to other books of similar price. Gerry Blair's Predator Calling book contains much more information for the same price.

The Coyote Hunter is a well written informative book. The book is written in an easy to understand style that gets to the point. The one other review does not mention the great success that can be had coyote hunting after reading this book. I hunt coyotes in Montana and Wyoming and I can tell you the authors know what they are talking about.

This Master Field Log will be a permanent wealth of information and you will be reluctant to share its contents with anyone when used properly. Scouting for success can only come when you make a map of your hunting areas. This book will do what you want it to do, if you do a little scouting. The log will only give you a little about the land. But if you write all that you see, this log will be a road map to successful hunting! A perfect companion to Coyote Hunting: The Eastern Coyote, by Tom Bechdel.

If you're serious about writing and speaking language that crackles with delightful and obscure words, then you must have this book. As indicated by the title, it is a selective thesaurus containing 50,000 words and phrases, focusing on the more arcane or colorful choices. The main weakness is lack of cross-referencing, but it is nonetheless a superlative supplement to standard thesauri or synonym dictionaries.

Anyone looking to improve his or her vocabulary and anyone who loves words will be enthralled by this unique and impressive thesaurus that provides only the most unusual -- or is it recondite? --words for each entry.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointed.......2006-03-22

I purchased this and another thesaurus hoping to find some creative words to use when I write. This was extremely disappointing. There are definitely some impressive words, but few that could be used even in a scholarly article or report. If you have several thesaurus reference books, this might make an interesting addition, but don't expect to use it very often.

I can't seem to express just how helpful this book was to me and my pursuit of intillectual goodness.

I received this book as a gift and immediately realized it's not a reference volume. I later noticed that an arrogant neighbor of mine also owns it, and I also noticed his copy appeared not to have been read or otherwise perused. It then occurred to me that, to have real value, a book like this should be USED. I decided to take this book to the office, and every time I write an interoffice email, to replace one of my own words with a term from this book. Carefully and seriously done, it can really upgrade your interoffice communication by giving you a tiny verbal edge, and will subconsciously upgrade other people's respect for your writing skills. And if some of them are made to feel small through my skookum vocabulary (as mentioned in another review), that's just tough rocks.

Though this little Thesaurus will never replace Roget's, it certainly is an entertaining and often surprisingly useful source for those who wish to test the limits of their vocabulary.
Part jabberwocky and part expanded horizons, this easy to use reference is a particularly fine adjunct to those who are repeatedly asked to write essays on subjects nearly exhausted from prior attempts at creativity. Poets, arts writers, and perky correspondents beware! There ARE more words out there to play with than even the grandest personal verbal sandbox! A fun and useful book. Grady Harp, December 2004

I have always loved increasing my vocabulary! I constantly look up words that I haven't a clue what they mean, learn them and then use them. I love it when someone writes me an email, with a word that again I haven't a clue what they mean by that, LOL!So, I look it up again. Communicating with people with a strong sense of the ability to communicate in such a way that makes what they say extremely interesting. I think a person with with an increased vocabulary is a literate asset and I really enjoy speaking with that person, not meant simply to impress people, but to use a wider range of words and phrases to describe thoughts, feelings, or to make a point and learn another form to express yourself another way. Using other ways of communicating helps people to think, at least it does me. Isn't language an art form if you want it to be? I just happen to think that great communication skill's are fun! and I would use this book all the time! This book is a English Major's dream book!

Dogen's Extensive Record is the first-ever complete and scholarly translation of this monumental work into English. Eihei Dogen, the thirteenth-century Zen master who founded the Japanese Soto School of Zen, is renowned as one of the world's most remarkable religious thinkers. As Shakespeare does with English, Dogen utterly transforms the language of Zen, using it in novel and extraordinarily beautiful ways to point to everything important in the religious life. He is known for two major works. The first work, the massive Shobogenzo (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye), represents his early teachings and exists in myriad English translations. The second work, the Eihei Koroku, is a collection of all his later teachings, including short formal discourses to the monks training at his temple, longer informal talks, and koans with his commentaries, as well as short appreciatory verses on various topics. The Shobogenzo has received enormous attention in Western Zen and Western Zen literature, and with the publication of this watershed volume, the Eihei Koroku will surely rise to commensurate stature. This edition contains extensive and detailed research and annotation by scholar, translator, and Zen teacher Taigen Dan Leighton.

I have a great feeling holding this book. And its heavy, you can use it as a weapon. This book is for those who have come a bit on the path of zen and in Dogen studies. I use it as a `quoteoftheday' book looking up a dharma hall discourse and digest it slowly.

Dogen's Extensive Record, here translated by Taigen Dan Leighton et al, is an incredible accomplishment in translation and understanding this seminal figure in the history of Zen, and Japanese Zen. These records were mostly recorded later in his teaching career and reflect an intimacy not seen as often in his more popularly known work., SHobogenzo, despite others thinking to the contrary. Dogen here inspires, instructs, challenges and presents in a way that EVERY zen student will find inspiring and challenging. Whereas Lin Chi didn't have a lyrical bone in his body, despite being an exceptional teacher, Dogen is highly lyrical and poetic. Taigen's introduction is worth the reading as well, as it contextualizes and lays out a context in which to read this Extensive Record.
Taigen Leighton has to be the foremost Dogen scholar in our time, and as an ordained Soto priest in the line of Shunryu Suzuki roshi, gives play to his love for the founder of Soto Zen in Japan.
Dogen is such an important figure that he transcends Zen and Buddhism and is considered one of the great literary and philosophical figures in Japanese history.
This is a book you will come back to over and over again, tasting Dogen in ways that stay with you, that challenge you, as all good zen teachers do.
