    Book Description

The typical workplace is a hotbed of human relationships--of friendships, conflicts, feuds, alliances, partnerships, coexistence and cooperation. Here, problems are solved, progress is made, and rifts are mended because they need to be - because the work has to get done. And it has to get done among increasingly diverse groups of co-workers. At a time when communal ties in American society are increasingly frayed and segregation persists, the workplace is more than ever the site where Americans from different ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds meet and forge serviceable and sometimes lasting bonds. What do these highly structured workplace relationships mean for a society still divided by gender and race? Structure and rules are, in fact, central to the answer. Workplace interactions are constrained by economic power and necessity, and often by legal regulation. They exist far from the civic ideal of free and equal citizens voluntarily associating for shared ends. Yet it is the very involuntariness of these interactions that helps to make the often-troubled project of racial integration comparatively successful at work. People can be forced to get along-not without friction, but often with surprising success. This highly original exploration of the paradoxical nature--and the paramount importance--of workplace bonds concludes with concrete suggestions for how law can further realize the democratic possibilities of working together. In linking workplace integration and connectedness beyond work, Estlund suggests a novel and promising strategy for addressing the most profound challenges facing American society.

    5 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2004-02-26

From the Publisher: "Working Together" shines a bright line on group conflict and cooperation at a fundamental but understudied juncture in American social life: the workplace. Her study combines deep research and careful nuance with bristling insight and an accessible style that should attract a broad audience. For a host of reasons, American social analysts tend to minimize the importance of what happens at the job. "Working Together" is an important and impressive corrective."--Randall Kennedy

5 out of 5 stars Praise for WORKING TOGETHER.......2003-09-26

"WORKING TOGETHER is an original and important book. With eloquent prose, Cynthia Estlund convincingly develops the argument, based on a careful integration of empirical studies and social and political theory, that working together enhances inter-group relations in the long run. This book has enormous relevance for students concerned about the future of civil society, and will be widely discussed and cited for many years."

        Book Description

This book completely solves the problem of representing rings (and modules over them), which are locally noetherian over subsets of their prime spectrum by structure sheaves over this subset. In order to realise this, one has to develop the necessary localization theory as well as to study local equivalents of familiar concepts like the Artin-Rees property, Ore sets and the second layer condition. The first part of the book is introductory and self-contained, and might serve as a starting course (at graduate level) on localization theory within Grothendieck categories. The second part is more specialised and provides the basic machinery needed to effectively these structure sheaves, as well as to study their functorial behaviour. In this way, the book should be viewed as a first introduction to what should be called relative noncommutative algebraic geometry.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Exploration.......2003-01-19

This comic book is a great introduction to Jung for young adults and adults alike. The drawings in this book immaculately illustrate Jung's theories giving the book a real cosmic flair. In this book, as with all Beginners Documentary Comics, you get a great mixture of biography and theory...Allowing the reader to not only explore the works of the person being examined, but also offering a peak into the mind/life experience of that individual. I highly recommend these comic books for educational purposes. They allow topics that may generally seem overwhelming to be viewed in short hand with the benefit of innovative art and wit.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible! Take your money and feed pigeons instead........2000-09-05

It is rare when I can find nothing good to say about a book. This is one of those times. The writing style is primitive, the organization of contents non-existent, and technical information provided either trivial, misleading or wrong. The book is currently unavailable. I hope it stays that way. Speaking probabilistically, any source of information on Jung is likely to be more useful than this one.Similarly, anything else you could think of to do with your money would give you more pleasure than reading this book. The author has good credentials. Why he published this is an enigma.A true waste of trees.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Beginners Book.......2000-02-04

Jon Platinia's book on Jung is a fair introduction. The presentation and organization of the book overall is somewhat confusing while the writing is dry and unexciting. I found myself skimming over some lines either because the writing was uninteresting, or the subject at hand. The life of Jung was interesting, but once it moved into the psychological works, it lost some of its steam. There are better Jung intro's available than this one.

        1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2000-01-18

I've heard of Jung, but only vaguely knew what he was about, and wanted to know more. However, this is not a book for beginners. There is too much unexplained psychobabble and gobbledegook. The jokey, flippant cartoons and asides get in the way of any attempt at explaining his theories. Only the glossary is useful. Overall I wouldn't recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars A mix of some good ideas with a few embarrasing gaffs.......1999-01-10

Jung is difficult. He has so much to say, however, that an intro in the "For Beginners" style could be helpful, especially for younger readers. The section on animus/anima shows evidence of relying on updated and critical thinking. Well done. But a few gaffs make me think this was a rush job by people who don't now the turf. For example, it's news to me that prominent analyst-writer Adolf Guggenbuhl Craig is Jewish. He remarks on his Christian practice on more than one occasion. And what is the "Zen Tralblatt?" Could it be the "Zentralblatt"? Elementary German. Such mixups lead me to mistrust the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars Life Enchancer, MInd Expander Book.......2002-04-25

I've read so much evangelical theology, branched out to mystical theology, then philosophy, to later, psychology. This has changed my life, as reading the great thoughts of others is the greatest virtue I have experienced. Yet with all this said, I have never read Jung. I picked up two Jung books, one an intense large volume of Jung's writings and am starting to embark in this journal. First reading Ruth Berry's "Beginner's Guide to Jung," has been so rewarding, mind expanding, deserving of 5 stars, for taking many of the deep concepts and explaining them in user friendly terms, that is, to begin one's journey into the mind of Jung. Thank you Ruth Berry

            Book Description

We all dream five to seven times each night, offering a glimpse into a reality not normally available to us. Now Jungian analyst and author Clarissa Pinkola Estes explores the symbols, themes, and misconceptions of these "letters" from our unconscious, with the beginning student of dream interpretation in mind. From the seven types of unusual dreams to concrete techniques for recalling and uncovering their hidden meanings to using dreams for inspiration and guidance. Here is an accessible new primer from this eloquent authority on dreams and their archetypal power.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-09-06

This is great instruction on interpreting your own dreams. Instead of giving you a list of this symbol means that. She explains a process for figuring out what each element of a given dream means to you personally. And then retelling the dream with those meanings substituted. "I stepped into a brightly lit open field..." might become "I stepped into brightly lit freedom..." I applied this to a dream that did not seem very significant. It was about characters from a TV show having a conversation. I figured I had the dream because I'd watched the show before bed that night. I did what she said to do, replacing personal associations for the elements of the dream. I realized that the dream actually spoke to a relationship I was in and emotions I was feeling concerning it.

5 out of 5 stars Much good advice on remembering and interpreting your dreams.......2006-02-18

I tend to dream a lot, but apparently we all do . . . according to
Clarissa Pinkola Estes, an author and Jungian psychoanalyst,
we dream from five to seven times each night . . . the problem
is how to remember such activity.

Estes, in THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO DREAM INTERPRETATION
(an excellent CD program which she wrote and read), says you
need to put a pencil or pen near your bed . . . before you go to
sleep, ask your Dreammaker for help in remembering
your dream . . . then as soon as you get up, write down
anything that you can remember . . . or as an alternative:
read what you remember into a recording device

There's much good advice here . . . for instance, if you've ever
been bothered by a dream, make it a point to tell it aloud
to another person . . . you can also make a picture of it, yet
if you do, you still need to discuss the picture with another
            person.

As to actually interpreting dreams, Estes advises to list
all the nouns that are part of them . . . and next make
associations for each of these nouns.

Lastly, she explores the themes of several dreams . . . one
that I even have every so often was there--my not graduating
from college . . . apparently, when that happens, I should
anticipate what might happen in my life.

                                Book Description

The rain forests of Central and South America have long captured the attention and imagination of writers. From nineteenth century explorers to modern-day conservationists, a host of writers have put the rain forests into print. This is an annotated guide to over 1,600 works about the American jungles. Entries are arranged by category: Ecology and Conservation; Flora and Fauna; People of the Forest; Travel and Exploration; and Young Adult and Children's Reading. Each category begins with a brief description of what is to be found, followed by alphabetically arranged entries. Each bibliographic entry contains notes on the book's subject, focus, and scope. The book's introduction gives insight into its usage, and the index allows for easy reference. This annotated bibliography, covering topics from the Acua Indians to zoologists, will lead the reader to resources as diverse and fascinating as the rain forests themselves.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Hwa Rang Do........2006-05-31

First off I am not a practitioner of Hwa Rang Do; the book was recommended to me by my uncle who has his fifth degree black belt in the system and who is very involved in the organization. My experience has been in Kenpo, Kung Fu and Brazilian Jujitsu. I found this book very interesting; I have experience with the majority of the techniques or concepts in the book in one form or another. I enjoyed Mr. Lee's presentation of these techniques, he explains them in an easy to understand format. Although it is my understanding that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is said to be a complete and dynamic system.

The chapters detailing the history of the art are very informative, especially to someone that knows nothing about the system. The book also briefly talked about the philosophical aspects of Hwa Rang Do. The book is a good intro to the style for anyone curious or anyone considering studying it (like me); it could also give the experienced practitioner a deeper understanding of the arts evolution, and a handful of its techniques. Over all, this is book is informative and worth the money.

My only complaint is that the pictures are small; this problem would have been easily fixed by expanding the size of the book. Considering this is my only complaint, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the art, or just expanding your martial arts knowledge.

3 out of 5 stars Traditional Hapkido Style Takedowns & Joint Locks!.......2006-04-05

Despite what this title might initially suggest in the present age of Mixed Martial Arts and Submission fighting, the subject matter is actually the traditional-style defense and take down methods present in Hwarang-Do and related arts such as Hapkido and Kuk Sool. Like most schools of Hapkido-based arts, Hwarang-do is not a close-in grappling style like say, judo or competitive jiu jitsu.

Sequence photographs show attacks from kicks and punches to grabs which are parried or countered with joint locks, and sumbission by throw with a continued hold on the limb of the adversary, or otherwise using leverage to bring the antagonizer to the ground where he can be held and immobilized.

This volume is well-executed, I liked the presentation format. Not a bad book, easy enough to comprehend, but much of the material has already been covered in other works, including Henry Taejoon Lee's father GM. Joo Bang Lee's series of three books, "The Ancient Martial Art of Hwarang Do" (all of which I recommend). Martial artists without experience in hapkido-type arts (or other lock/throw styles) should also note that many of the techniques shown here which look spectacular in demonstrations are quite difficult to apply in practical situations without a cooperative "assailant". Still, not a bad book. I recommend this mainly for practitioners of Hwarang-Do (of course), Hapkido, and Kuk Sool.

If you enjoy Korean martial arts such as Hwarang-Do or another Hapkido related style, you may also enjoy Choe's affordable Hapkido books, Kimm's "Hapkido" & "Hapkido II", Myung's "Korean Hapkido" and any of the big "Kuk Sool" textbooks. I hope someday Joo Bang Lee will be able to produce a master volume on his art of Hwarang-Do--the art certainly rates it!

Some people when they write a review seem not to take into account the purpose of the book. This book does not intend to compare with Pierre Chantraine's Dictionnare Étymologique de la Langue Grecque-l'histoire des mots.... As a reviewer seems to think. So, within its scope, it has its place and plays its role very well! It could, I agree, be a little bit bulkier and include some extra information in the form of tables, and so on, as other good Langenscheidt publications do. But it is worth the name of the publisher, within its range and purpose.

3 out of 5 stars It has a number of faults, but it is the only option.......2003-03-09

When it comes to an inexpensive, pocket-sized dictionary for the beginning student of Greek, Langensheidt's POCKET GREEK DICTIONARY is just about the only option. However, it has a few minuses.

The layout of the dictionary is rather hard on the eyes. The typeface used is difficult to read, and if a sentence runs over the margin, it is shifted one line up, not down! Strangely, the book doesn't use quite the same alphabetical order of most Greek lexicons, meaning that one spends more time flipping around trying to find a word. As a fan of Aristophanes' comedies, which often include bawdy scenes, I was disappointed to find that this dictionary didn't include - whether from lack of space or puritanism - the obscene words which one must know to understand Aristophanes' humour.

If you're new to the study of Greek, I would recommend this dictionary right away because it is economical and pocket-sized. However, if you plan to continue your study of ancient Greek, saving for the much more expensive but superior Oxford lexicons is necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for what it is!.......1997-07-05

I gave this pocket size dictionary a rating of ten because in its category that what it is. A Yugo gets a rating of ten when measured up against other inexpensive, pocketsize cars for beginners. It would be of little use to compare it to a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. In the same manner it would be of little use to compare this pocketsize, handy, inexpensive, dictionary to the Liddel-Scott-Jones Lexicon. I believe the first paragraph of the preface sums it up, and I quote it here now: "The Pocket-Dictionary is not intended to compete with any of the larger Lexicons, but as it contains all the words which appear in the authors commonly read in schools, and also those of the Greek New Testament, it will perhaps prove useful to beginners, and may also lend occaisonal service to more advanced students when they are unable, or disinclined, to look up words in a more extensive work. At any rate it has the advantage of cheapness." I find it useful in my work translating Appian, and will usually look up a word it in before using the LSJ Lexicon.

                                      Book Description

Packed with an Astounding Amount of New and Never-Before-Collected Material.

Why are people born? Why do they die? Why do they want to spend so much of the intervening time wearing digital watches?

No one but Douglas Adams could have pared life’s meaning down to these three questions, and they remain as inspired and head-scratchingly clever today as they did twenty-five years ago when they appeared in the first edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Showcasing his quick wit, comic genius, and wide-ranging intelligence, Hitchhiker’s has become nothing less than a cult classic and cultural phenomenon.

To celebrate its quarter century and the extraordinary legacy of Adams, this gorgeously designed, mostly harmless deluxe edition gathers never-before-collected photographs, original artwork, memorabilia (from the strange to the sublime), and wisdom gleaned from a first read or first encounter as Douglas’s friends remember how the galaxy was forever changed a mere twenty-five years ago (not to mention the original text of the novel) into a one-of-a-kind Guide as stunning as two suns setting over Magrathea.

Whether you are well versed in the antics of Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered Earthman plucked from his planet seconds before it’s demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, and Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy posing as an out-of-work actor, or are hitching a ride for the first time, this is the book that has everything you’ll nee to know about anything. So please do not be alarmed. Definitely don’t panic. Just be sure to grab a towel.

There are books that you should read, re-read, and re-re-read. This, unfortunately, turned out not to be one of those books, at least for me.

When I first read this as a teenager, the whimsical English humor, sudden digressions, metafictional interruptions, and probing satirical questions kept me in stitches. This novel (such as it is), held together by a singular smart-assery, profoundly appealed to my own new found sense of adolescent rebellion. Coincidences, meaningful and otherwise, non sequiturs, and bureaucratic balderdash leavened the side-splitting dialogue and made it impossible to put down.

Alas, upon re-reading the novel at the conclusion of 2006, I was struck by how much of the writing didn't strike me anymore. To say that the plot of the book is thin would be a compliment, and to call the characters, well, characters, would be a stretch. Most of the jokes just weren't as funny this time around, and the few that did crack me up were tinged with the bittersweet recognition that they would never be groundbreaking again.

Because I read the 25th anniversary edition, perhaps it is fitting that it conjured up such mixed emotions. The author, Douglas Adams, had died three years before this edition was published, and so many of the extras in this volume involve tributes from luminaries like Terry Jones and Neil Gaiman. The introductory chapters are also chocked full of reproductions of flyers, book covers, and other such emphemera that will only be important to die-hard fans of the book, radio show, and/or movie.

Remember, though, that this review is just my opinion. Whatever you do, Don't Panic.
