Book Description
Volume V in the acclaimed Real Utopias Project series, edited by Erik Olin Wright.
Are there ways that contemporary capitalism can be rendered a dramatically more egalitarian economic system without destroying its productivity and capacity for growth? This book explores two proposals, unconditional basic income and stakeholder grants, that attempt just that. In a system of basic income, as elaborated by Philippe van Parijs, all citizens are given a monthly stipend sufficient to provide them with a no-frills but adequate standard of living. This monthly income is universal rather than means-tested, and it is unconditionalreceiving the basic income does not depend upon performing any labor services or satisfying other conditions. It affirms the idea that as a matter of basic rights, no one should live in poverty in an affluent society. In a system of stakeholder grants, as discussed by Bruce Ackerman and Anne Alstott, all citizens upon reaching the age of early adulthood receive a substantial one-time lump-sum grant sufficiently large so that all young adults would be significant wealth holders. Ackerman and Alstott propose that this grant be in the vicinity of $80,000 and be financed by an annual wealth tax of roughly 2 percent. A system of stakeholder grants, they argue, "expresses a fundamental responsibility: every American has an obligation to contribute to a fair starting point for all."
Book Description
Gareth Morgan's book is designed to develop the art of reading and understanding organizations. He works from the premise that our theories and explanations of organizational life are based on metaphors that lead us to see and understand organizations in distinctive, yet partial ways. He demonstrates how the use of different metaphors provides new ways of managing and designing organizations. His book also stands as a treatise on metaphorical thinking that contributes to both the theory and practice of organizational analysis.
Customer Reviews:
Morgan Images of Organization.......2007-01-04
great metaphors from author to help understand organizational thinking but read slowly if you are a concrete thinker. Easy reading really if you think metaphorically. Had to write a paper on psychic prisons, uncanny how true Morgan's analogy is to real workplace environment. This book was better than our required text. Hated the Organizational Behavior instructor I had but loved the book and the subject matter.
Most valuable read of my MBA.......2003-02-15
Gareth Morgan's book provides an antidote to the finance, marketing and HR texts that are required reading for an MBA student. The clever use of metaphor allows the reader to absorb the huge anount of information contained within the book (check out the bibliography!) - you don't even realise how much you are learning until you start relating concepts to others around you. My fellow students, colleagues and even my parents had to listen ...
I found it a very easy to read book, if you are willing to put aside your existing ideas (psychic prison) about the way the organisation works(?) If you prefer big words, read Morgan and Burrell's Sociological Paradigms and Organisational Analysis - essential reading, but even more brilliant as a companion to Images.
Learn the stuff you are expected to know from your finance, marketing, statistics, strategy and HR texts, but understand the stuff that will change your world from Images of Organisation.
This book can profoundly change your thinking about orgs.......2003-02-14
This is not a "three steps to understanding organizations" type book. The people posting negative reviews for this were looking for something simple and digestable - this book is not that. However, if you take the time, you will find it profoundly alters your thinking about understanding organizations.
This book provides solid theoretical models for understanding what is occuring in organizations. I read this book over 10 years ago and STILL find it the second best and most enlightening thing I have ever read on organizations. This has dramatically aided me in being a very successful business consultant.
The foundation of this book is the notion that you cannot understand complex organizations in any meaningful way through a single perspective. People in the organizations operate on many different perspectives. Each view of the world creates its own understanding of the organizational problems, solutions and daily pattern of interaction. This book provides you the tools for understanding organizations through a number of key perspectives or metaphors, and gives you indications on how to perform a multi-perspective systems analysis.
If you spend the time with this book, you will find yourself able to understand your surroundings FAR better than your peers.
Too esoteric...hard to follow........2003-01-08
I am a graduate student in organizational development. Although this book has some good underlying concepts, I found most of the book hard to follow and not very engaging. It was often difficult to see how many of the concepts actually apply to organizations. There may be good ideas, but they often get lost in the rambling chapters.
Terrific Find.......2001-07-28
I found this book to be insightful and very useful in administrative organization analysis. It was a useful tool in developing a change management program for a public organization.

Customer Reviews:
Great beginner youth coaches book .......2005-08-09
I purchased about 5 books on coaching soccer, particularly youth soccer (13 and under). This was by far the best of the lot, most covered only rules and strategy and not teaching basic skills. This is the first coaches book I found that actually explained how to kick a ball! It does a great job in explaining how to teach the basic skills, which is what most of the young players need. The drills were helpful and made a definite improvement in the play of the team.
great coaching skills for beginner coaches.......1999-05-12
goes in detail of coaching young kids [fantastic
A decent book for beginners and intermediates.......1997-05-04
This is an okay book for beginner and intermediate level youth soccer coaching. There are two
main problems with this book. One is that the illustrations are extremely crude, often reduced to
literally stick figures. The other problem is that, having collected several other youth soccer
coaching books and videos, I'm not sure that I actually learned anything new from this book, and
so in retrospect, I don't think I would have gotten this book. For beginner coaches learning how
to coach very young kids (i.e., ages 4-8), Karl Dewazien's "FUNdamental Soccer" is a better
book in terms of the illustrations, and in its emphasis on how to handle these very young
children. For a more detailed explanation of tactics and intermediate to advanced skills for older
children (ages 8+), Alan Hargreaves' book "Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer" treats
essentially the same topics in a much more thorough fashion. For teaching soccer dribbling
"moves", Wiel Coerver's "SCORE!" is the ultimate book (although, as I noted in my review of
that book, the companion videos, viewed in slow motion, are more useful). However, if you
haven't gotten any soccer coaching books yet, and are looking for your first ever youth soccer
coaching book for slightly older kids (ages 8+), this book might be useful. It does have a
cookbook set of week-by-week soccer drills that will get you through your first soccer season, if
you don't want to have to think too hard about what it is that you're going to have to do.

Since, happily, most writers don't have direct experience with the gory details of drug enforcement, forensic psychology, or hate crimes, they'll need to get the nitty-gritty for their screenplays and novels from a reliable source. This is where Howdunit comes in. Culled from a 14-volume series on crime writing, the book is a one-stop-shopping reference guide for writers in the genre or for those interested in learning the background of real police work.
Beginning with the fundamentals of modern cop life and the criminal justice system, Howdunit elaborates on murder variations (bizarre, mass, serial), forensic medicine and autopsies, crime-scene searches and surveillance, vice-related crimes, and special problems such as gangs and paramilitary groups. Stark illustrations are included where appropriate, such as black-and-white photos of Nazi paraphernalia and basic police gear, as well as simple anatomical drawings that are designed to illustrate common medical adjectives like lateral and posterior. Most chapters end with a short list of points to cover for character or plot development, turning each subject into a possible writing exercise. The editor, John Boertlein, spent 20 years on the police force, and he clearly knows his stuff. Each section is precisely detailed and extremely straightforward; tools, procedures, and personality profiles are recorded in a way that leaves little room for misinterpretation. If you've got your plot twists and big con all planned out, studying this book is sure to provide the final touches. --Jill Lightner
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2002-11-09
"Howdunit" is an exceptional tool for the mystery and suspense writer. The information on investigative procedure, profiling, forensic psychology and so on, will assist the fiction writer with the reference material needed to make his or her story factual. It is imperative for the screenwriter or novelist not to just brilliantly structure a story but to add "realism" in his or her craft. Howdunit has helped me to affix genuineness to my storytelling by presenting the pure facts about crime, law enforcement techniques and the criminal justice system. I personally enjoyed the segment on the con. Howdunit provides a concise glimpse of the con's master art. This makes for good drama within the novel and screenplay. (It will also help you to spot one in real life!) I firmly recommend "Howdunit" and the complete "Howdunit" series for the writer who is serious about producing quality material. Excellent choice of books. Kudos!!
Excellent Beginning Resource.......2002-09-21
I have been purchasing the entire HowDunnit Series from Writer's Digest. I have been for the mostpart, impressed with how in depth each book is. This a good synposis of the series in one volume. My disappointment came mainly from the section on Autopsies. I wanted there to be more from the book it was exerpted from. Also, I would love to see the book "Police Procedural" come back into print. I would recommend it to anyone who is writing fiction about cops, detectives and forensic professionals.
Good, not great.......2002-08-23
Howdunit is a concise resource for the crime fiction writer. No matter what information you're looking for, it's in here. I've found it to be a great resource for non-fiction, as well. I utilized this book for a speech on forensics, and I received an A.
Oddly enough, this book gives great hints for the would-be criminal. I don't think that's a good thing, but hey, we need the resource.
Pretty Good.......2002-04-19
This is a good book for writers. It's interesting to read and covers a wide range of subjects. However, because it covers such a wide range of subjects, it doesn't give a lot of detail about each one. So if you need to know a great deal of information about one particular thing then you'd need another book devoted only to the subject you need to know about. But if you only need to know a little bit about a lot of different subjects, then this is the book you should buy.
Everything you want to know about crime... and more!.......2001-10-03
Howdonit is one of a series of books for the serious mystery writer. The book outlines mayhem, police investigation procedures, and anything a budding - or experienced - mystery writer may need to know to make a story authentic. There is nothing worse than reading, or worse yet, writing, a story which has a clever plot, good characterization, but is faulty as far as procedure goes. With this book as a guide your stories will do justice to your writing abilities and your ability to research your topic.

almost always on target.......2005-10-11
(...) I realise that they are produced for a mass audience but, especially in financial matters, Susan's thoughts tend to be spot on. With regards to the romantic side, however, I find her to be a little too optimistic... but that's just my opinion.
She nailed a legacy from a female relative, she nailed my house purchase, she nailed the week in which to settle for a mortgage (I got a historically low rate, which lasted for exactly one week, and has never been seen again), she nailed a huge (HUGE) pay rise and she just nailed a payout from an insurance company.
I can only assume that someone out there is getting all my "love luck".
I like Susan's approach; it's accessible. She's not always right but, by God, she's rarely far from the mark.
The best way to predict the future is to create it.......2005-03-04
According to Miller I should have gotten married last year. I'm still single. The myth abouth astrology is that your natal charts basically have your life set in stone. Astrology is a growth tool to be used to understand energetic influences, strengths, weaknesses, identify best strategies, etc. it is not about prediction and public astrologers such as Miller have editors to listen to. Not only are forecasts written in sensational language, they are based to appeal to a broad general audience. This is not news. However, if you have ever had your chart done an astrology explains that you have signs in all planets. When you read a horoscope section it is only writing in relation to your sun sign. If you were born at a certain time of the year your sun sign is the one absed on the date. You also have a "moon" sign, a "rising" sign, and your Mars could be in Capricorn, Jupiter in Picses, even if your a Gemini. Keep in mind that astrology is fun and I see it as a form of symbolic stories of wisdom, Jungian psychoanalysts usually refer to conscious images as clue to what's going on deeper in the mind. I can't say I believe it. I used to be really into it as a teenager and from time to time as an adult. Usually these were periods of confusion for me and I suspect for most people the over-reliance on a zodiac columnist may stem from that. Save your money and skim through this in a bookstore. If you are gung-ho on knowing what future lies in your stars then find a reputable astrologer in your city. Ask friends whose opinions you trust. Check out holistic stores and magazines. Most of all use the kind of objective discretion that you would if selecting a medical doctor. Astrology is very interpretive and training as one is not regulated. So you're playing Russian Roulette. Once you find someone have your chart done. Better yet learn astrology yourself and use it as an empowering tool to create the life you want. The key is ... don't start until you are very sure of what it is your heart truly desires.
my favorite astrologer.......2005-01-27
I have been following Miller for years and she is almost always on point. Her monthly forecasts on Astrologyzone.com have been the most in-depth and accurate that I have seen thus far. I bought last year's book and she was so on point, I was speechless. You must buy this book, or you can go the cheaper route and print out her scopes from her web site.
The best astrologer since Linda Goodman...
Susan Miller is always the best!!.......2004-12-11
Susan has a friendly and clear way to explain all about astrology, she is very good with her monthly forecast, I totally love her page.
If you are interested in learn about astrology, don't look anything else, read any of her books.
