Book Description
Why does society oscillate between intense interest in public issues and almost total concentration on private goals? In this classic work, Albert O. Hirschman offers a stimulating social, political, and economic analysis dealing with how and why frustrations of private concerns lead to public involvement and public participation that eventually lead back to those private concerns. Emerging from this study is a wide range of insights, from a critique of conventional consumption theory to a new understanding of collective action and of universal suffrage.

interesting but not compelling.......2004-12-17
The author's premise that the general public is given to mass swings from seeking private gain to seeking public benefit, both driven by disappointment, is interesting; but the argument is never quite proven. For starters, there is offered no empirical evidence that this occurs. (The only historical review given is in support of the narrower point that a growing level of wealth generates disappointment in various affected classes.) Secondly, the explanations for why such swings *might* happen, or be expected to happen, never quite explain why these swings would happen *en masse*.
Nevertheless, I recommend reading this book -- it briefly introduces a range of provoking ideas. These include: that potential for disappointment varies by type of good, that there are multiple responses to disappointment (including postponing response by ignoring problems or internalizing dissatisfaction), that consumers do not have perfect knowledge nor only a single set of preferences, that "comfort is the enemy of pleasure," that public involvement could disappoint for providing too much *or* too little opportunity for participation.
The book is more marketing/psychology than economics, but its arguments could help explain, for instance, our modern shift to disposible goods and possible methods for understanding voters by understanding second-order volitions. It gets you thinking, even if the primary argument of the book is less than convincing.

What are today's teams really like, and why are they failing? In their new book, authors Harvey Robbins and Michael Finley explain what they see as the reason: teams fail largely because they don't think through the human implications of teaming.
The New Why Teams Don't Work is as much about people as it is about business. This handbook will help team members and leaders maintain the highest level of social and emotional intelligence by making them more aware of their own needs, conflicts, and peculiarities.
Among the new chapters are "Collaboration vs. Teamwork", "Team Balance", "The Death of Teamwork", "The Team of One", and "Teams at the Top".

Great Book!!.......2007-07-16
I am working on my Doctorate in Management and have read numerous books on teams and team building. This is one of the best. It tells you the real workings of teams, not just theory. In fact, it will tell you a great number of things you probably don't want to hear. Many of the truths about teams that you have been told are flat wrong! I am sure that these guys are not on the Chirstmas card list of many team building gurus. An easy, fun read.
Another Great Communications Read!.......2006-10-29
After reading The New WHYTEAMS DON'T WORK by Harvey Robbins and Michael Finley, I thought two things. The first thing that I thought was, what a great book and the second thing that I thought was, what else have these two written.
The book was very easy to read because it was so well written and they succeeded in making it a fun read as well. I am an art lover, so the first thing that caught my mind was the front cover. I thought that the picture was creative, artistic and it sure did fit the topic at hand. The next thing that I really enjoyed about the book was the fact that the chapters were not long and drawn out. The way that I read this book, all of the data was quite educational. The authors did not seem to stretch what they needed to say in order to add fifty or sixty more unneeded pages to this book. Another aspect that caught my attention about this book was the fact that it was written for all people. The language, sentence structures, format and word choice were all used so that readers of all ages and social statuses could read the book. Some authors tend to do everything in their power to speak over the heads of their audiences and I did not see that in the case of this book. The chapters were nicely separated and they stayed on topic. For example, when I started to read chapter two on Team Instinct, I did not feel that the authors took a dozen pages to reiterate what was talked about in chapter one. Again, keeping a nice flow to the book and making my read an easy and enjoyable one.
Finally, I really appreciated the fact that the book gave both sides to the question at hand. WHY DON'T TEAMS WORK? It gave reasons and solutions. I enjoy a book that is not one sided. I like to hear both sides of ever story before I pass judgment or draw opinions.
In closing, I just want to restate my appreciation for having the opportunity to read such a great book. Just like a movie that someone enjoys that they can watch twice on the same day, I see myself picking this book up again in the near future to scroll through the pages, and catch back up on some of the notes that I took and lines that I highlighted. This was a great book and I look forward to reading more from these authors.
Thank You.

A good place to start for teaming basics.......2006-02-21
Teams have been touted as efficient, creative and able to innovate quickly for many years now. In this flood of books, articles and teamwork guru's, many organizations have been changing their organizational structure from traditional managerial hierarchies to team-based work. Unfortunately, teams don't always bring the results that management was hoping for. Why not?
Authors Harvey Robbins and Michael Finley say that there are many reasons why teams may not be working, but the principle one is that managers have forgotten that teams are made up of human beings. A team is not a piece of machinery that can be assembled and then turned on. It is a collection of human beings with all their various faults, ambitions, and insecurities, who are attempting to work together. Using teams does not mean that leadership is no longer required. Teams need to be led, motivated and nurtured. The strength of teams is creative, an opportunity to bring the expertise of many different people together to reach a common goal. When teams are used simply as cost-cutting devices to replace middle management, this primary strength of teams is being ignored.
Here is some of the advice the authors have for building and maintaining successful teams:
· Make sure the team members remain focused on the common goal.
· Make sure that the goal is clear to everyone and attainable in small steps.
· Make sure the team knows who their customer is.
· Make sure the roles of different team members are clear, and everyone knows who is responsible who which decisions.
· Listen to the concerns and conflicts of all team members. Take action to address their concerns.
Psycho babble.......2004-08-05
I have reviewed all 31 chapters of psycho-babble in the book (and the epilogue too).
A very "nice" read. Indeed entertaining and yes, funny in many ways. They also use doubtfull suggestions - like bringing "doughnuts" because people like them !?
They also "demystify" some "myths" about teamwork. (I do not know where they got those Myths from) - another fragment of their imagination, I suppose.
This "business" book is more of a "romantic novel" about something relating to "teams", full of anecdotal references (very life-like) - but totally unsubstantiated, wanting us to "believe" that indeed, "teams things" are like they describe it.
From an entertaining point of view - very. From an academic point of view - null. For a business person - if you have time to waist, have fun.
It is interesting to note that they got a UK award for their book. (for entertaining I suppose). I guess this is a way of promoting the book. Good marketing technique.
This is not a happy talk book about teams........2003-11-08
Read Chapter 5 on "misplaced goals, confused objectives," and you'll start getting a good handle on where most team problems lie. How many of us really understand what Demming meant when he stated that a good goal is not a number? The authors do. They know that a good goal is something that brings out passion. A good goal gives people something to respond to, buy into, claim ownership over. This is not a happy talk book about teams. With all the things that can go wrong with teams, and do, it's surprising they work at all. "Teams are trouble." Having this book available on your reference shelf will help you handle and minimize the inevitable missteps the next time you're asked to serve on a team, or lead it.

Book Description
Grasses occupy a greater area of the world's land surface than any other plant family, occurring in almost every terrestrial environment and providing a vital source of food for humans and animals. This volume presents the most recent information on their population biology, bringing together contributions from researchers studying both applied and fundamental aspects of this important group of plants. This volume considers demographic, physiological, ecological and molecular approaches to understanding grass populations in relation to reproduction and to aspects of life history patterns such as dispersal, germination, seedling establishment, population dynamics and reproduction. Other areas covered include the role of genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity in shaping life history traits, the impact of biotic factors, and the ecology of specific species in major grass-dominated ecosystems in Africa, Australia and Japan.

Description:
Seagrass leaves are often densely covered by epiphytic algae which can suppress seagrass productivity and has been implicated in declines of seagrass meadows worldwide. The net effect of epiphytes on seagrass growth and morphology depends on the independent and interactive effects of a variety of factors, including nutrient availability and the intensity of grazing on epiphytes. Here I report the results of a mesocosm experiment designed to test the effects of nutrient addition and within-functional group variation (grazer species composition and the source population of seagrass) on the strength of the interactions among grazers, epiphytes, and turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum). Turtle grass ramets from two sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico were cleared of epiphytes and transplanted into common-garden mesocosms. Replicate ramets were grown in a split-split plot design with two levels of dissolved nutrients and four different grazer species combinations (Tozeuma carolinense alone, Pagurus maclaughlinae alone, both species together, and no grazers present). As expected, grazers had a significant negative effect on epiphyte biomass/leaf area and a significant positive effect on turtle grass growth in the mesocosms. The two species were more similar in their direct effects on epiphyte biomass than in their indirect effects on turtle grass growth; this may reflect differences in epiphyte community composition under different grazer treatments. The effect of nutrient addition on turtle grass growth depended critically on the intensity of grazing: in the presence of grazers, turtle grass tended to produce a greater biomass of new leaf tissue in the tanks with nutrients added than in the control tanks. However, when grazers were absent, the direction of the effect was reversed, and plants with nutrients added grew less than the control plants. The two source populations of turtle grass differed significantly in epiphyte biomass/leaf area accrued in the mesocosms as well as in the strength of the effect of grazers on turtle grass growth. This suggests that population differentiation in seagrass interactions with epiphytes, as well as spatial and temporal variation in resources and grazer community composition, can greatly effect the role of epiphytes in limiting seagrass productivity.

Description:
The increasing atmospheric CO"2 content (pCO"2) is likely to modify the ecosystem functioning including rhizosphere bacteria that are directly dependent on rhizodeposition. This may include alteration of Pseudomonas populations that display phenotypic traits in relation with plant fitness. In the present study, 1228 Pseudomonas strains were isolated from the non-rhizosphere soil, rhizosphere soil and root fractions of perennial grassland systems: Lolium perenne and Molinia coerulea. Both plants were grown under ambient (36Pa) and elevated (60Pa) pCO"2 in the Swiss Free Air CO"2 Enrichment (FACE) system. Pseudomonas spp. were tested for their ability to produce auxin, siderophores and hydrogen cyanide, and to dissimilate nitrate. No effect of root proximity and elevated pCO"2 was observed on the proportions of auxin producers. For L. perenne and M. coerulea, siderophore and hydrogen cyanide Pseudomonas producers were stimulated in the root fraction. In contrast lower frequencies of nitrate reducers were observed in the root fraction compared to non-rhizosphere soil. The frequencies of siderophore producers and nitrate dissimilating strains were higher, and those of hydrogen cyanide producers lower, under elevated pCO"2 for L. perenne. This alteration of the phenotypic structure of Pseudomonas guild in the root fraction is discussed in relation with the physico-biochemical modifications of the rhizosphere condition via rhizodeposition and environmental changes occurring under elevated pCO"2.

Erikson is the man when it comes to understanding identity........2001-07-08
Admittedly, Erik Erikson is not an easy read (in fact his biographer Lawrence Friedman speculates what Erikson could have become had he been a more disciplined researcher, and writer.) Nevertheless this book provides keen insight into the phenomenon of the adolescent identity crisis.
"Crisis" in Eriksonian parlance is not used to connote an "impending catastrophe," but rather a "necessary turning point, a crucial moment, when development must move one way or another, marshaling resources of growth, recover, and further differentiation." Erikson deals effectively with a process that is at the core of the individual and in the core of the individual's communal culture.
After reading Lawrence Friedman's biography on Erikson entitled "Identity's Architect," I have come to appreciate the richness of Erikson's observations, such as "I shall present human growth from the point of view of the conflicts, inner and outer, which the vital personality weathers, re-emerging from each crisis with an increased sense of inner unity...," knowing that Erikson himself came to such conclusions only after examining his own storied past.
The illegitimate son of a Danish mother, and a father of unknown nationality, "Identity's Architect" weathered many a conflict, both inner and outer, as he journeyed toward a sense of his own identity.
Identity: Youth and Crisis is not an easy read, but it is rich with insight into the most mysterious and turbulent of all stages in the life cycle: adolescence. Ideal for those students of child psychology, child development, and those who work with youth.

Book Description
If some of our values have contributed to the creation of a toxic and damaged planet, and to the maintenance of systems of oppression based on gender, race and other types of differences, any attempts to foster alternative values requires attention to social and as well as ecological concerns.
Feminism and Ecological Communities presents a bold and passionate rethinking of the ecofeminist movement. It is one of the first books to acknowledge the importance of postmodern feminist arguments against ecofeminism while persuasively supporting a strong new case for ecofeminism.
Chris J. Cuomo explores the dualisms of nature/culture and masculine/feminine that defend many contemporary ecofeminist positions and questions traditional feminist analyses of gender and caring. Cuomo addresses these key issues by drawing on recent work in feminist ethics as well as the work of diverse figures including Aristotle, John Dewey and Donna Haraway.

Book Description
Relief Pitcher Sparky Lyle was the 1977 American League Cy Young Award winner for his role in helping the New York Yankees to their first World Series championship since 1962. The following winter, the Yankees - who changed the face of baseball in those early years of free agency - went out and aquired Pittsburgh closer Goose Gossage, relegating Lyle to an observer's role for the 1978 season. As it turned out, Lyle proved to be a more astute observer than anyone could have predicted. And, as luck would have it, the Yankee's 1978 season turned out to be as sensational, controversial, and colorful a season as there have ever been - a real zoo, in fact. The Bronx Zoo is Lyle's best-selling, highly acclaimed collaboration with author Peter Golenbock that, when originially released in 1979, was favorably compared to Jim Bouton's groundbreaking Ball Four as a hillarious - but scathing - baseball tell-all. Lyle had an insider's view like no other in a season for the ages, and the 1978 Yankees remain the biggest sideshow the game of baseball has ever seen.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read, But Golenbock Is A Lazy Author.......2006-10-14
First, the problems with the reprint of the best-seller that opened up a wealth of first-person accounts of those wild years with the Yankees:
* Sparky Lyle was not in favor of having the book reissued;
* There is not any new material and the typographical mistakes remain from the first edition;
* Unless you followed baseball in the 1970s or have an appreciation of baseball history, you may have trouble following the personalities and situations chronicled.
My rating is based on the controversy that exploded surrounding Lyle's candid accounts of the crazy 1978 season. Lyle does not shy away from the seemingly daily madness of The Boss, Reggie, Billy, and the closer wars of Goose and the co-author. It makes the stuff that swirled around the 2006 Yankees seem like agate type for the tabloids.
In the spring, Peter Golenbock was pushing the book pretty hard on local and national sports talk shows. I wish he would have done more than just put a nearly 30 year old sports book back in print.
But even the professional laziness of Golenbock cannot lesson the importance that book had in chronicling the Yankees and on Lyle's pitching career. The following season, Lyle was on the mound for the Texas Rangers.
Damn Yankees.......2006-04-27
Who knew that Sparky Lyle could be this funny? "The Bronx Zoo" is hilarious, but it's also a voyeuristic glimpse into the genuine, human world of baseball. Our sports figures are so lionized, it's easy to forget they are men with strange superstitions, nervous habits, and sometimes hysterical traits they try to hide when the eyes of the world are upon them.
Lyle writes with a surprisingly crisp and engaging style as he describes the behind the scenes chaos of the Yankees 1978 season. Here are the famed Yanks in all their human nature, sometimes ugly, sometimes odious, almost always entertaining.
Even casual baseball feels will get a sinful thrill out of viewing these superstars in the less than glorious world of the locker room. Baseball greats are humanized as Lyle tells the story of strange behavior with socks, devious practical jokes, and teammates struggling with language barriers.
As the Yankees go, so goes baseball, it sometimes seem. This is a book that will titillate fans of the game today even though the names have changed. And in a day when scandal and big money seem to be the themes of the sport, "The Bronx Zoo" is a refreshing reminder that the game is played by grown up boys and it is, after all, only a game.
Great Read . ........2006-03-22
Though I grew up a total Yankee Hater (and was 15 yrs old when this season took place), the book ranks right up there with "Thin Ice - A Season in Hell with the New York Rangers" as a top quality read for a baseball focus. Probably the best thing about this book is how Golenbock and Lyle are able to put a real personal touch to some of the Yanks that played on that team that year. Nettles is a total cut-up, Munson is a real gamer, Jackson is a media hog, Billy Martin is part psychotic and part genius, and Ron Guidry is the quiet, yet dominating athlete that just goes out and does his job. Some of the more amusing antedotes are the ones involving Fritz Peterson in Lyle's earlier days, and Rawley Eastwick's escapades in the present day. Previous reviews talk about Lyle being "whiny", and I can agree with that perception. It's kind of hard to relate to someone complaining about his stature in life as a professional baseball player, when Joe Schmoe is out there trying to eeke out a living doing whatever. But I have to admit that if you had won a Cy Young the previous year before and all of a sudden was relegated to "mop-up" status, it would be a blow to one's pride. But the book does hit its mark on one thing . .the perception of George Steinbrenner is TOTALLY dead-on.
somewhat dissapointed.......2005-08-19
Great inside info on a great season. I was surprised however at Sparky's constant complaints throughout the book. He keeps talking about all he wants to do is pitch, but spends the first half of the book complaining he is underpaid. Also talks about how he just wants the team to win, but at various points, refuses to go into games or leaves the team completely for a game. This is a good read and I would recommend it, but Sparky really moved down a notch or two in my eyes.
Funny at times, but also pretty whiny.......2005-05-12
In this "diary" (what diary has a co-author?) of his season with the Yankees in 1978, Lyle reveals the tension and lunacy of that memorable year. Only problem is, Lyle's frequent whining about being put on the back burner for the younger, stronger, and better Goose Gossage gets tiresome after awhile. It almost made me want to put down the book. While his inside info is nice, he puts himself ahead of the team at times by leaving before a game ends. At times you felt bad for Sparky for being shunned, other times you want to slap him for being so selfish. At any rate, I'd recommend getting Roger Kahn's "October Men" as a reference for the 1978 Yankees before this one.

Very good beginning grammar.......2007-08-05
I bought this to supplement three all-Italian texts used in the classroom. The explanations are clear and easy to understand, and the vocabulary is very useful. The book gives me an edge in the classroom when we have general conversation and when learning grammar in general.
Utterly and completely worthless.......2006-07-05
This series of disks is nothing more than Italian words and names spoken ONLY IN ITALIAN. Because there are no English translations, it is almost impossible to learn even the most basic Italian from these disks.
entertaining well organized lessons with audio CDs.......2006-07-01
This Italian course is well organized, comprehensive and has 8 audio CDs. The dialogs are lively, modern, and natural.
The book is divided into individual chapters, where each lesson has the following parts: 1) an Italian dialog, 2) the same dialog translated into English, 3) groups of words such as days of the week, the months, seasons, numbers, 4) grammar explained, 5) vocabulary: all the new words in a particular chapter plus related words, e.g. if the text uses "I go to the store", the vocabulary list will give alternatives such as mall, restaurant, café, etc, 6) exercises pertaining to the text 7) cultural notes about Italy, 8) a key to the exercises, and in later chapters 9) additional reading material in Italian.
Four of the 8 CDs bring the dialogs and vocabulary of the book. In each chapter, the dialog is first read by female and male native speakers without interruption, then the dialog is read a second time, but this time the student can repeat the sentences after the speakers. After the dialogs, the vocabulary list from the book is read with a pause after each word so that the student can repeat the words. These CDs also bring additional pronunciation exercises.
The second set of 4 CDs is designed to complement the text but can also be listened to in a car, or while exercising. All text is both in English and Italian, it relates to the lessons learned and deepens your understanding of the text. You will be asked to translate English sentences into Italian, or to respond to Italian questions.
At the end of the book you will find an excellent summary of the grammar, verb charts with all their tenses, a chapter on letter writing in Italian, and a comprehensive glossary of all Italian words used in the book with their English translations.

TOWN AND VERY LOW COUNTRY.......2007-10-10
On a recent trip to America's "Low Country"(in and around New Orleans etc.) I was charmed and delighted by its fabulous foods, and sophistication. I wish this book had the same high level of civility..it does not. Good toasts should not have poetry that could have been written by elementary school children. I look to Town and Country to set a higher standard.
Really nice for gifts.......2007-09-19
This book is ideal as a gift to anyone who attends lots of social functions. The suggestions for toasts are tasteful and there's something for any occasion or gathering---weddings, funerals, graduations, etc.
