Book Description

Now available in paperback, this bestselling book presents a new framework for understanding the dynamic forces at work in human affairs -not only in business, but also in personal lives, education, and even geopolitics. Focusing on cutting-edge leadership, management systems, processes, procedures, and techniques, Spiral Dynamics synthesizes changes such as increasing cultural diversity, powerful new social responsibility initiatives, and the arrival of a truly global marketplace.Ideal for managers, consultants, and strategists, this inspiring book adds power and precision to the understanding of human value systems and twenty-first century leadership. It draws UK biologist Richard Dawkins ' concept of "memes " and Clare W. Grave's 'Level of Existance Theory' to lay out a very specific toolkit for managing the deepest differences in people. The authors' concept of MEMES represents a new element in the Science of Memetics and why ideas resonate or not. Spiral Dynamics demonstrates how, by applying the right tools at a base level rather than to surface symptoms, any bright, curious human being can begin, quite simply, to change their world.

5 out of 5 stars Makes sense out of things that didn't make sense.......2007-10-01

The model presented about how the paradigms of thinking and how value memes develop over time in a person, organization, or society are brilliantly insightful. This book should be required reading for anyone running a company or organization of any size. The insights that can be gleaned are significant (at least in the lines of development in which one if far enough along oneself).

This is not at all an "easy" book to read. It takes time and thinking, and is probably best read in parallel with a few other people and discussed regularly along the way. I read this book along with another CEO, and a PhD psychologist who specializes in working with family-owned businesses.

4 out of 5 stars A New Way of Understanding the World .......2007-07-13

It may not be the "answer to everything" but Spiral Dynamics helps to put a context around why people act in certain ways when presented with certain life conditions. Using the theory of memetics (idea viruses), spiral describes the evolution of humans as a progression from one value system to another along a double helix spiral. Pitched to those in management or leadership, Spiral Dynamics offers insights as to why some people need traditional or hierarchical or ordered or opportunistic or caring or project based workplaces depending on their value meme. The text can be stilted and academic at times and the introduction is confusing, however there are some great insights and well worth reading if you are interested in finding the answers to everything! Pity the colour plates from the hardcover were not replicated in the paperback seeing how Spiral Dynamics relies on the use of colour descriptors.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant Idea.......2007-07-11

I first heard of Spiral Dynamics when I went to hear Don Beck speak at the Dallas Philosopher's Forum. He was one of the worst speakers I ever heard -- but his ideas were so incredible, so brilliant, that they shined through the poverty of his delivery. When I then went out to buy the book, I encountered the same problem: brilliant ideas, poor delivery. But the ideas are so good, it is work struggling your way through this book just to get the ideas.

The idea is this: thinking and societies exist at different levels of complexity, with new forms of psychoosocial complexity emerging as lower levels become oppressive. It fits well the latest complex systems paradigm in science that takes into account emergence, information, time and process, and fractal geometry. More, it maps extremely well on to the emergentist theory of time developed by J.T. Fraser in books such as "Time, the Familiar Stranger" and "Time, Conflict, and Human Values" and in Frederick Turner's latest book "Natural Religion". The nested hierarchy. evolutionary, emergentist view of nature is THE new paradigm. This and Fraser's works are excellent introductions to these ideas.

2 out of 5 stars The Emperor Has No Clothes.......2007-05-21

A very interesting developmental theory taken WAY to far. The ideas expressed here could have been presented as a helpful extension of the work of psychologist Abraham Maslow and others. Instead, they are framed as comprehensive theory of morality itself, marketed to managers (!) and consultants (!!), as 'leadership lit' no less. It's as if Nietzsche wrote "how-to" books for his developmentally superior ubermensch.

However, the authors have an ace up their sleeve. Spiral Dynamics defines two tiers of human development and pretty much anyone who agrees with the theory is automatically classified as a 'tier two spiral wizard.' Pretty cool- but those who read The Emperors New Clothes as a child might feel a bit uneasy about all of this. It turns out, however, that they feel this because they are still "first tier." Similarly, fans of the work of Karl Popper could see this internal dismissal of external criticisms as the surest sign of non-falsifiable oogy-boogy flim-flam, but again we are assured that that is not the case here. We are not actually bad for thinking this way- just developmentally limited. We are destined to live in the clutches of the 'mean green meme' in the hope of someday bowing to the superior functionality of the philosopher kings and their consulting affiliates.

And kings they are! It turns out there is a heck of a political agenda here. "Wizards," it seems, are instantly able to see solutions to systemic problems- and they need not take seriously the niggling and limited opinions of the lesser-tiered, except to figure out how to win them over. They are "big-picture" sorts, again like Nietzsche's supermen, busy moving the universe forward. They have a duty to run things in this chaotic world. Call it the "Turquoise Man's Burden." You see, these "Wizards" inherently tend to know best and to question their judgment is to betray an almost endearing naiveté. To point out that this is essentially what Plato had in mind when he wrote The Republic 2300 years ago, would, I suspect, be a faux pas. While the idea has yet to really work -and has led to more than a few revolutions- apparently its time has yet again come. From this standpoint, it is interesting that about half of this "developmental theory" is devoted to techniques for shilling ideas to the lesser-tiered.

As someone who grew up in Boulder, Colorado all I can think is that this functional superiority must surely account for the absolutely stunning moral, institutional and financial successes of the city's Integral Institute, which set out to be a sort of "Mensa" for all the lonely "spiral wizards". That it all snowballed into lawsuits and acrimony is only a sign of the sheer incomprehensibility of their greatness.

The bottom line: Much of the developmental theory is actually really good but absolutely ruined by the decision to conflate it with self-help pabulum for the self-righteous and cultish. Two-star stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, something that begins to put things together.......2007-05-13

Spiral Dynamics will give you an edge in assessing people and situations. I am a professional legal mediator. I have found the theories in this book to be of immense help to me in understanding how to approach people and problems in the legal world. I have not read a great deal about the application of Spiral Dynamics in the legal world. I frankly don't think there's a lot out there, and their web site is frankly short on guidance concerning the application of Spiral Dynamics theory in legal mediation and negotiations. I have nevertheless considered approaches to many mediation problems against the background of information I gleaned from this text. I am rather amazed how simply adjusting the language of the mediation to the particular meme-level (or color) of the client suddenly opens the door to progress in communications and the chance to ultimately find common-ground between warring parties. Someone definitely needs to write a follow-up text with practical suggestions as to the application of this theory to mediation and negotiations in the legal world. Lawyers are increasingly turning to mediation as a way of resolving disputes. Someone could make a small fortune teaching lawyers how to utilize these theories not only in negotiations and mediation but also in jury selection in courtroom trials. Oh man, the possibilities are staggering, and lawyers will pay for this kind of knowledge.

Anyway, the writing is interesting, anectodal and fun to read. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in figuring out why no matter how hard you try, the guy next door just doesn't seem to "get it." It also explains why the political vision and understanding of some politicians seems to go right over some people's heads and that of other politicians just leaves you shaking your head.

4 out of 5 stars Intrapreneuring - A must in the corporate world!.......2001-05-12

I first encountered this book while in an "intraprise" training session provided by the author (Gifford Pinchot) and his team of consultants for my corporate business unit. The practice sessions, business plan training, and creativity training was basic but I could tell a lot of our team (of 30 senior managers) had never encountered this type of thinking. That's when it dawned on me - what I've treated as "common sense" really wasn't so common after all.

This book is rather short but it does provide a lot of practical theory on what I believe is a very basic concept - foster and SUPPORT creativity and innovation in the workplace. Let people build the proverbial "better mousetrap," in fact, be their biggest champion. It is only through creative, innovative, RADICAL thinking that we in the corporate world can ever hope to remain competitive. Unfortunately, most managers just don't get "it." It being the concept of investing time and money in people's creative ideas.

The only down side to this book is that it really isn't an action plan. It speaks a lot about creating an environment of creativity and innovation but doesn't spell out the "how." It merely explains the importance and emphasizes the fact that you need to champion said efforts.

If I had merely read the book and not gone through the training, I would have given this book 5 stars, based on the concept alone (which I STRONGLY support and implement). After receiving the training, I wondered how much practical experience the author really had. He appeared to struggle a LOT in the training and his sessions around creating a business plan were EXTREMELY lacking.

Due to the brevity of this work and the fact that it is not common knowledge, I have recommended it to all of my staff as a baseline understanding of a concept to which I am firmly committed.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-07

Gifford Pinchot and Ron Pellman describe a hands-on plan of action for moving from an idea's creation to its implementation in a company setting. They focus on the support an idea needs from an intrapreneur, who runs with the idea, whether he/she originated it or not. This individual is much like an executive producer who shepherds a film through the stages of development necessary for production. These stages include developing an intrapreneurial team to work on the project and getting sponsors throughout the organization to support it. Organizational leaders should act as "climate makers" to create a climate that supports innovation.

This well-written, well-organized book combines some basic principles about what makes innovation work with examples of companies that have effectively developed new ideas. It provides guidelines for what to do. The basic principles of innovation may sound familiar to anyone already involved in idea creation and development. However, this handbook provides a useful guide or reminder summarizing these basic principles and showing how to put them to work in any organization.

5 out of 5 stars Novelty and Neologism.......2000-01-27

Anyone who claims innovation is easy is kidding himself. Commanding your employees to "be innovative!" is like shouting, "Quick - don't think about elephants!", and then wondering why their eyes glaze and minds go blank. More importantly, proponents frequently suppose that innovation begins and ends with creativity, thereby discounting the vast number of electrifying ideas that die unimplemented. Turning good ideas into corporate breakthroughs requires people committed to rolling up their sleeves and making the ideas work - the people eager to be the internal entrepreneurs.

These "intrapreneurs" are the subject and stars of Intrapreneuring in Action, the sequel, distillation, and augmentation of the classic Intrapreneuring. Recognizing that those who dominate language dominate thought, Gifford Pinchot and Ron Pellman embrace their neologism with quiet fervor, offering a sequence of rules, guidelines, examples, and observations on what it takes for the intrapreneur to clear internal hurdles and "make innovation happen within established organizations". Here the subtitle suits words to action: the volume is a true handbook, linking prescription to prescience when discussing such issues as the crucial role of sponsors, the design of "intraprise" workshops (a particularly strong chapter), and the opportunities to develop innovation within a structured process. The authors are also remarkably adept at offhand insights, ranging from "ask for resources before asking for advice" to "lower your status by lowering your height". If you've ever been intimidated by an overly tall boss who insists on delivering counsel from his personal mountaintop, then you'll recognize the truth in Pinchot and Pellman's advice.

Complementing this sage wisdom is the book's tone of calm conviction, of ardent urging minus artificial urgency. The authors are to be congratulated for eschewing self-promotion; although they inevitably cite their own clients and case studies, they barely mention their own involvement. Similarly, in an extended description of intrapreneuring in the U.S. Forest Service, Pinchot and Pellman list several reasons why the Forest Service's enterprise team experiment succeeded, none of which is "input from inordinately brilliant consultants". Thus when the authors take particularly provocative stands - the best intrapreneurs "come to work each day willing to be fired" - the reader is far more likely to interpret them as wise counsel and give them the credit they're due.

Intrapreneuring in Action cannot be all things to all people. Although the authors believe their principles apply as readily to internal system improvements as to new products, they unconsciously overemphasize the latter in their notions of market research, financial planning, product launch, and the like. The handbook style can verge on the choppy and disconnected, so many readers - as the authors themselves acknowledge - may prefer to skip around and pluck out sections as needed. Nonetheless, Intrapreneuring in Action remains one of the most accessible and invigorating of the innovation books currently fighting for space on Amazon.com's virtual shelves. Aspiring intrapreneurs, not to mention past proprietors of neighborhood lemonade stands, will have plenty of reason to read this book through. Twice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent commentary on Jung's major work.......2006-09-02

This book is a section by section commentary on Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis. Alchemy is a confusing topic by itself. Jung's interpretation of it is highly nuanced and can easily be confusing as well. And so one needs someone with the insight and knowledge of an Edward Edinger to lead the reader throught the murky terrain of Jung's text. I had a college professor once say to me "A bad commentary explains the obvious, a good commentary explains that which is not obvious;" Edinger's book explains and brings to light that which is not obvious. He digs into Jung's text and is a perfect companion to Jung's Mysterium. Edinger clarifies much of the seemingly confusing parts of Jung's book, and lays out the line of thought that Jung is establishing in the Mysterium. I could not have worked through Jung's book with the help of Edinger. Edinger is one of those rare authors who is able to be deep and insightful yet clear and concise at the same time. He includes many diagrams whuch I found extremely helpful, as well as an excellent index. If you want to understand the valubale riches which lie buried in the Mysterium Coniunctionis, this commentary will quickly become your best friend on that journey. You will not be disappointed with this book.

I found Dr. Edinger's Mysterium Lectures an invaluable help in my second reading of Mysterium Coniunctionis. His lucid style brings in much additional material and helps make one of Jung's best works more accessible to the layman.

5 out of 5 stars The most innovative fly fishing book since Hatches II.......2007-06-16

I ran a couple of highlighters dry in the first two chapters of this book -- before I even got to the part about tying. Chapter Two alone (modestly titled "Principles of Fly Selection") is worth the price of the hardcover. It contains a leap in thinking about the feeding behavior of trout similar to those made by Vincent Marinaro and Gary LaFontaine. It is superbly written and (unlike most speculation on that subject) very realistic.

It took me a while to discover that chapter, because when I first got the book I skipped straight to the eye candy: the flies and tying techniques. Gonzales emphasizes that there's no such thing as a fly that's too realistic, that more realism is always helpful as long as it's realism from the trout's point of view. His durable flies emphasize lifelike motion, proportion, and posture in addition to the detailed markings and appendages common to many other realists. He employs some very useful, unorthodox tools, materials, and techniques which aren't found anywhere else. For each type of trout prey he presents fly styles ranging from quick and easy to detailed and difficult, so there's something for tiers of any skill level. This book is cracked open next to my tying desk more than any other.

So many fly fishing and tying books lately have merely rehashed what is already known by any experienced angler. This is not one of them. Everyone who reads this will learn at least a few useful new things about fishing and gain several very good ideas for tying.

          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-12-27

Without a doubt one of the most interesting fly fishing/tying books I've read in ages. To fish successfully even as more fishermen push in on our "secret" spots, we need to change our strategies. Gonzales offers practical suggestions to successfully fish heavily worked water, find less pressured water, offers insight into trout responses to pressure, and offers inspired tying strategies to step up your tying quality.

Of particular interest was the idea that you don't want or need to tie more elaborate flies than you have to, but, at times, hyper-realism may give you an edge when heavily fished trout have seen it all. This being the case, he offers three stages of complexity for several fly patterns. Beginning with the most simple (and quickest to tie), he leads you through intermediate styles and on to the most complex (and time consuming) styles. By doing this, the fisherman chooses the level of realism that produces the best results.

This book really changed the way I look at a stream by introducing pressure as a new element to be observed and taken into account when choosing my fly. After your tying advances beyond the beginner level, you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars Gonzales Creative Approach to Pressured Trout.......2006-07-16

A friend loaned me this book and I read it and then re-read it repeatedly. Lloyd Gonzales has the most innovative and creative approach to fly tying I've ever seen. I've yet to fish one of his patterns, but trust that given the company he keeps (Ed Koch for example)and the logic I see in the patterns, that his flies will become some of my favorites for next season's mayfly hatches. This is the most exciting tying book I've ever seen, and I'll soon be the proud owner of a copy.

Without repeating the essence of what praises prior readers left, I just want to reiterate, if there is any doubt: BUY IT! Crowley is cryptic- an understatement. But he is a profound and enlightened genius. You need a dictionary to understand him better. And the Thoth, like Duquette eloquently stated, is a pictorial representation of Crowley's life attainments, aka spiritual attainments. So if you think you don't need help, think again! BTW- for me this one plus Banzhaf's keywords, along with Thoth & Equinox are perfect together.

5 out of 5 stars A good read and new insights .......2007-08-11

In my work on The Last Troubadour, my tarot based novel (legend and characters of Tarot come to life in Medieval times plot line), I read many, many books on the Tarot (perhaps some 40 or so, by the count on my book shelf). While I used Medieval tarot decks as the basis for my plotting, my research led me off in many delightful tangents, not least of which Aleister Crowley's magnificent Thoth Tarot. Of all of the books on the Thoth Tarot, I think Lon Milo Duquette offers the right blend of scholarly analysis with readable prose with fascinated information. It's less a how-to Tarot book -- most books seem to be more how-to oriented (although there are elements of this, certainly) -- and more an engaging, interesting and credible exploration of the history and symbolism of this particular deck, which is almost certainly one of the most unique and fascinating by virtue of its controversial creator. As an experienced tarot master, magician and scholarly writer, Lon managers to write with authority, while keeping reader interest.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERSTANDING ALEISTER CROWLEY'S THOTH TAROT BY LON MILO DUQUETTE.......2006-08-24

I first bought this book because I wanted to know more about the Tarot, but soon found that it was much more than only a book on Tarot. The book is firstly about magick, the book is magick! There is a lot of interesting facts about Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris as a start, but it went on to give some very pertinent insight into the Qabalah, Goetia, Hermeticism, and Western esoterica in general. The book is a treasure trove on the occult and esoteric symbolism. I particularly enjoyed the discussion on the Hermetic Rose Cross and the significance of all its symbolism. This is a book that anybody interested in esoterica in general and Western esoterica in particular will always want to have on hand! Furthermore, it is always a delight to read anything by Lon Milo DuQuette.

          4 out of 5 stars I've read worse.......2006-07-08

There is a lot to like about this book: Background on Crowley and Harris, explanations of much of the arcane symbolism, etc. Some readers might be turned off by DuQuette's liberal use of Thelemic scripture to illustrate or explain points (including thelemites). Be forewarned - DuQuette is a True Believer - and a devoted apologist for Crowley and Thelema.

He is knowledgeable about much of the cards' meaning, and illuminated things which for me had long been obscure. Unfortunatley, he sometimes falls back on such nonsense as "Fire is hot and dry, Water is cool and moist," etc. I mean, what the hell does that actually mean? Nothing - at least no deeper explanation is given. Still, despite such occasional obscure vagueness, for those interested in Tarot, this book is worth the read.

          4 out of 5 stars It's O.K........2006-02-28

While I created my own deck, the throught of someone even needing to use tarot cards was an issue. I used them out of curiosity that if I could somehow see into my future with these cards and their almost cryptic meaning, these people creating them were very smart, hoax or not. It's almost the same thing as using a ouija board. As works of art, they must be appreciated, if only to improve the user's own artistic skills. The Crowley deck these days needs some work. I created my own deck, which wasn't saying much. When I first got the deck I was in awe of Crowley and the artwork especially. But now that I have had my own works rejected by a pretty big publisher it must be said THIS- they have the MIND of a 20 year old in their dreams!

2 out of 5 stars My emotional Rollercoaster.......2006-05-22

The stories in Chicken Soup for the Girlfriends Soul took me on a very high and low emotional rollercoaster. The stories made me smile and some made me sad. I didn't particullarily like this book because I think that it was directed to an older audience. I am 15 years old, and some of the stories were about life-long friendships. I couldn't seem to relate to many of the stories. Overall, this book wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't the worst book I have ever read.

          5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried.......2005-08-02

As with all the Chicken Soup books, I was able to relate to a lot of the stories and I really enjoyed reading the book. I'm giving it to my best friend who is leaving for college and I think she will really enjoy it also.
