Book Description
Strategic Innovation offers a flexible, customizable template that managers, executives, and business leaders can use to introduce an effective innovation strategy throughout their organization. The authors, Nancy Tennant Snyder and Deborah L. Duarte, provide the tools needed to craft a workable strategy for embedding innovation as a core competency across an enterprise. Instead of innovation for innovation's sake, the authors offer a proven business-focused way to change a culture from point-in-time innovations from a few to a continuous pipeline of innovations from everywhere and everyone.
Based on the real-life example of Whirlpool a solid company with a significant track record and global reach—Strategic Innovation shows how the world's largest appliance company put innovation in place as a core competency. During this process, Whirlpool transformed itself from a quality producer of appliances to a customer-focused company that strategically embeds innovation throughout the organization. Filled with challenges and struggles, and ultimately successful results, the Whirlpool story can help any organization develop a successful innovation strategy. Written as a practical guide, the book contains in each chapter a variety of hands-on resources including checklists and worksheets. Strategic Innovation offers the tools, ideas, and approaches needed for transforming an organization to a company where anyone and everyone can contribute to the organization's prosperity—through innovation.
Customer Reviews:
Embedding Innovation: The Way It Ought to Be Done!.......2003-08-12
INNOVATION: An oft-used word...a fascinating concept...desirable to embed in any organization...and rarely accomplished over an extended period!
Snyder and Duarte treat us to a tale about an exception...The Whirlpool Corporation, a company that was able to embed innovation as a core competency and make it a part of the organization's culture.
Too often innovation is attempted with template technology, a "one-size-fits-all" approach. This is a story of how Whirlpool recognized that a customized approach was needed in order that innovation become part of the everyday life of the organization. The authors eloquently explain the challenges they faced, the setbacks that occurred, the change process they used, and the successes they achieved.
Strategic Innovation is a "must-read" book for managers and other change agents.

This volume collects Frederick Crews's two controversial essays on Freud from the New York Review of Books, "The Unknown Freud" and "The Revenge of the Repressed," as well as some of the critical letters provoked by their original publication in 1993 and 1994. In these essays, Crews elaborates upon his belief that "the relatively patent and vulgar pseudoscience of recovered memory rests in appreciable measure on the respectable and entrenched pseudoscience of psychoanalysis." Recovered memory therapy, according to his thesis, is a grossly negative practice that, in turn, has its origins in Freudian assumptions about psychoanalysis--assumptions that Crews charges were based on fraudulent data and intellectual bullying. As the reader responses indicate, these ideas were like a grenade tossed into the center of psychoanalytic culture, made all the more powerful by Crews's lively prose.
Customer Reviews:
frontal attack on psychoanalysis and father Freud........2002-08-28
This devastating book has two parts: (1) The Unknown Freud, where the reader gets a picture of Freud as a dictator, a megalomaniac and egotripper. A pope who alone knew the truth and who founded a secret commission to protect his 'church' against the heathen. He was a bad psychoanalyst (e.g. the Wolf Man case) and a venal man (e.g. the catastrophic Horace Fink case, where he tried to get his own hands on some money of the heiress).
I agree with the author that psychoanalysis is a pseudoscience - statements cannot be tested and the research results cannot be verified uniformly. Although it is not totally without meaning (Karl Popper), it is not a science.
(2) the revenge of the repressed
A frontal attack on the caste of the psychoanalysts, depicted as 'religious zealots, self-help evangelists, sociopolitical ideologues, and outright charlatans who trade in the ever seductive currency of guilt and blame, while keeping the doctor's fees mounting.'
The author is particularly severe with their latest 'school' : the 'recovered memory movement', based on the rape of children by their parents (really!). This lead to false accusations and condemnations of innocent people. No wonder the author predicts an accelerating collapse of psychoanalysis as a respected institution.
A much needed and courageous book to halt a profession riding at full speed on a misty highway. And a much needed angle on Freud as a person, written in a style to slaughter the not so innocent father of psychoanalysis.
After reading this book, I agree with Peter Medawar, who called doctrinaire psychoanalytic theory "the most stupendous intellectual confidence trick of the twentieth century".
Freudians Release Their Pent Up Hostility.......2002-03-22
Frederick Crews really knows how to tap that deep reservoir of hostility found in modern Freudian psychoanalysts. In 1993 and 1994 FC wrote two essays in the New York Review of Books debunking Freud in the first, and tearing to shreds the recovered memory movement in the second.
These two essays and the letters in response to them have been put into the book The Memory Wars. As someone trained in experimental psychology you can guess my own personal bias in this matter. Crews discusses Freud's botched cases; his frequent vacillation in theory formation; some of his sillier theories; and his serious interjection of personal bias into the formation of his beliefs. The main problem with the whole Freudian system is the total lack of scientific evidence supporting it. Freudian psychoanalysis is founded on anecdote and supported by anecdotes. To be fair, much current non-Freudian therapy is also based on anecdote. Indignant Freud followers write back, and their letters are indeed interesting (and often pompous).
The second half of the book takes on the recovered memory movement. It would be great to poke fun at this movement if it weren't for the fact that it has caused so much damage to all parties involved. Symptoms checklists are published with the statement if you suffer from these symptoms you may be a victim of sexual abuse. Read the list and you will find that the majority of Americans will find that they have been abused. It's all a patient seduction game with the intent to make big money. Hospitals have even set up units to treat such patients (Having worked in the psychiatric hospital industry I am well aware of the "product lines" that such facilities set up in order to fill beds). Crews does an excellent job of dissecting the memory movement, and once again we get to read the indignant responses.
Those who believe that psychological therapy should be based on sound scientific evidence will love this book. Those who have accepted Freudianism with a religious like faith will, of course, hate it. To me this whole subject is analogous to the evolution vs. creationist debate. It's science versus pseudoscience.
Highly entertaining and serious debate.......2000-05-04
I have always been a fan of the intellectual debates in the New York Review of Books letters to the editor pages. This book consists of two articles by Crews and the subsequent debates surrounding them. I would have liked to see better defenses of Freud, but none of the eminent defenders of psychoanalysis is able to mount a serious challenge to Crews's devastating attacks.
An excellent first stop for the novice Freud reader.......2000-04-01
For those of you who have swallowed the Freud legend hook, line, and sinker, this book may help get you off the hook.
Seriously, though, this book is not one to miss, regardless of your theoretical beliefs.
For you Freudians, it dispuptes the naive hagiographies of Peter Gay and Jones, and prepares you to engage in the current battles that rage about Freud and his ideas. You might not like what it says, but it will challenge you and force you to more critically evaluate your beliefs. Like it or not, many of your colleagues and students are now challenging Freudianism, and the challenge is stiff, indeed. A Freudian needs to be prepared!
For those of you already skeptical of Freud's claims and disconcerted at the negative sequelae of his theories, this provides a wonderfully cogent dissection. It is easier to read than some of the other titles in this area (such as Malcom MacMillon's "Freud Evaluated, the Completed Arc"), yet covers the ground well.
Given the unexamined Freud worship found in most textbooks and class materials, it is a wonderful addition to a class textbook (and I use it as such). I highly recommend this book to all.
this book is profoundly intellectually dishonest........1999-11-10
What is most disturbing about Crews is his intellectual dishonesty in setting up "straw men", especially early ideas of Freud's that Freud himself later modified -- as Crews well knows. (However, it is possible that Crews is less dishonest than I believe, and merely ignorant.)

Book Description
This illuminating work outlines the essential principles and techniques that define the art of holding in most martial arts. More than 1,300 outstanding photographs introduce over 155 practical techniques encompassing all types of holds: joint-lock holds, chokes, head locks, nerve holds, pressure point attacks, takedowns, ground pins, advanced combination holds and transitions, and defenses against chokes and joint-lock holds. Comprehensive introductory chapters provide an authoritative overview of important technical principles, East Asian energetic concepts, and 69 fundamental skills encompassing stances, footwork, grips, and methods of tumbling and falling. Precise anatomical illustrations and descriptions of 106 common Oriental pressure points, and a visual comparison of different martial arts, make this an invaluable resource for all martial styles. Expertly written and designed by the author of the 1,136-page Hapkido—widely acclaimed as the most comprehensive book ever written on a single martial art—this exceptional work is designed to stand alone, or function as a companion text with the author's other works on martial techniques and anatomy. Regardless of the style you practice, these books will enrich your training, improve your technique, and deepen your understanding of the unique qualities embodied in your own martial art.
Customer Reviews:
Do not buy this book if you want to use it for grappling tech.......2006-10-29
I made the mistake of purchasing this book thinking it would be a good source of information on grappling. From the title I would have expected some coverage of holding techniques or pins used in Judo or Jujitsu. The submission explanation are below par. The only part of the book I found useful was the chokes and choke defenses.
Any of the Gracie, Machado or even the Judo books are much better than this.
Outstanding book on subject.......2005-03-30
This is one of the best books out there on holds and locks. Mr. Tedeschi is apparently a well known designer and artist, and his books seem to reflect that expertise, as they are nicely laid out and designed with very clear photographs and clear and concise explanations and text accompanying the photos.
The book presents over 150 holds and locks, so the coverage is very complete. So if you just learned all the techniques in this book, you really wouldn't need to learn anymore. The techniques are organized by area of the body, as is typical, so there are chapters on wrist holds, finger locks, armlocks and holds, neck and headlocks, and leg and ankle locks.
Standing holds are included as well as ground holds, so some matwork is included too, which may be of interest to the grappling and BJJ enthusiasts out there.
In addition to the above, the book also has many useful or even unique features that I haven't seen in other books on holds and locks, such as:
1. Comparisons of the same holds and locks in the various arts, such as aikido, jiu-jitsu, judo, wrestling, and hapkido, showing the similarities in techniques across the different arts
2. Very thorough and detailed pressure point and nerve charts
3. A presentation of wrist holds by biomechanical action that is useful
4. Overview pages at the beginning of each chapter, such as wrist locks, illustrating the final position of the lock, which makes it easy to review the material or go to the lock you're interested in (since the names of the different holds and locks vary widely in the different disciplines)
5. Tips on holds and chokes, such as how to eliminate "play" in chokes.
6. Detailed photo sequences, usually incorporating more photos than in other such books, making it easier to follow the action
7. A chapter specifically on nerve and nerve cavity type holds
8. High quality, glossy paper that is rare on all but the most expensive books these days (you pay more for it, of course)
9. Photographs are black and white with very high contrast, making them easy to see
10. The whole book is just very nicely organized, laid out, and convenient to use
I have a suggestion on how to use the book. If you're a specialist in holds and locks, there might not be that much new to you here, but if you're more of a karate or kung fu or TKD person and you're trying to learn some holds and locks to integrate with your percussion techniques, I have some advice for you, since that's primarily what I am, although I have a second specialty in chin na.
It's not necessary to learn a great many techniques. Remember, back in the 1400s in Japan even a great jiu jitsu master might only know a dozen or two dozen different holds, but he could apply them with great skill to many different types of situations. I think that approach still has merit today. You could pick half a dozen or a dozen and leave it at that.
Another way to go would be to pick a few wrist locks, a few elbow locks, neck holds and chokes, and leg and ankle locks each. Also, some holds work better at arm's length and others are for more closeup. You could pick several that work at each distance as well, and several that work standing as well as on the ground, such as the standard armbar or under arm pin.
Finally, there is the distinction of whether the lock is applied from the inside or outside position relative to the opponent's guard. For example, the standard arm bar is done with you to the outside of his arm, and therefore away from the other punching hand, whereas the well known outward wrist lock, although a formidable technique, is done from the inside, where one is more vulnerable. But both kinds of techniques should be learned since you aren't always able to get to the outside guard position.
If you're interested in further information, the books by Yang Jwing Ming on chin na such as Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na and Taiji Chin Na, are also excellent, and also Ming's videos, the video by Kwong Wing Lam on chin na, and there are a few others I'm probably forgetting. The only problem with a book even as good as this one, is that for the price of this book new, you can get a video on the subject that actually shows the techniques in action. The Ming video I have has over 100 holds and locks, but he has several.
In fact, if you watch the auctions for a while, you can pick them up used on e Bay for less than the price of these books new. The only thing is chin na ones don't get listed as often as the other martial arts videos and you might have to watch for a while to find some. But that's how I got mine.
Nicely Done.......2003-05-07
Excellent description of versitility and practical applications. Nothing very new to me but very through and a great reference for all levels of Martial Artist and Martialist.

Incredibly Thorough Volume on a Specific Subject!.......2003-02-16
If you already have Mark Tedeschi's Huge 1136-page Hapkido book, you're probably wondering what makes this volume on holds any different. The main difference is this: The big Hapkido book _does_ include every technique shown here. However, the detail in this volume is much more exact--the big Hapkido book was so inclusive that the author was limited to showing 2-3 photos to illustrate a hold or thorw. This volume on holds uses an average of 5-9 photographs per technique, including close-ups. The descriptive narrative is also more specific in this volume. So if you would like a volume which is incredibly specific on the subject of holds and locks, this book is the thing! If you already have the big book, and don't really need the extra detail, then this volume would probably be redundant.
I should add that I am pleased with the quality of the volumes put out by the publisher, Weatherhill. Clear photographs are printed on slick acid-resistant paper, and the boards of these volumes are covered with a laminated paper that will resist picking up sweat (or any other of those wonderful things we get on our books while taking them on the mat or discussing techniques after practice). Tedeschi has gone the extra mile in making ALL of his books as specific as possible. Most of the techniques shown include extra photographs and diagrams of bones, muscles, and pressure points as they apply to the specific technique. For instance, the section on chokes and head locks includes 6 pictures of wrist action along with two diagrams of pressure points on the hands--and the explanation of why you align your wrist in a certain way, and how it is the most effective biomechanical method. This, similar photo-diagrams showing the difference between Basic Entries and Forced Entries, Eliminating free play in a choke, the importance of body positioning, types of chokes, major targets (again, several pictures naming areas with their pressure point location & proper location name), and attack points--this is before he even begins to show and describe a variety of chokes!
This specific volume includes an overview (history, types of holds, comparing holds from different martial arts, responsible use of force), then fundamentals (breakfalls, concepts, principles, stances, footwork, etc.), Wrist Locks (10 different), Arm Locks (16 of them!), shoulder locks (12), Finger Locks (18 kinds, 8 applications), leg locks (12), Chokes & Head Locks (32), Nerve Holds (20), Defenses Against Chokes and Head Locks (10), and Defenses against Joint Locks (10). Tedeschi includes a complete bibliography of his sources.
Excellent!.......2003-01-28
Received the book yesterday and alredy read half of it. Outstanding! Good layout, clear pictures, well written descriptions of techniques. I also like the fact that the author addresses how various styles will have slightly different ways of doing the same techniques. Well worth the money!

Introduction for New Contractors.......2007-04-04
This how-to guide will teach new contractors the very basics of underground construction work.
Good Book.......2007-03-17
I suppose that some of my trade secrets are no longer "secrets", as I stumbled across them while reading Pipe and Excavation Contracting. It's a good book - I have no complaints.
Engineer, New Contractor.......2007-01-13
The book was OK, but it's very basic. Too much of the book had elementary chapters and too little meat I think. If you never did any underground work this book is good...for those that have there's probally a better one out there..I haven't found it so I'm not sure. The book had mostly on how to operate a backhoe, how to dig around utilities and stuff. I was looking for surveying hints..there were some but not much. I probally should have looked for a surveying book..but that would make too much sense.
Excellent.......2007-01-11
Not too hard to comprehend. This was suggested reading for the Louisiana General Contractors License Exam. I found it informative.
From the ground-up.......2006-01-16
This book is heavy. The lightest, easiest reading is in the index - from there on it's strictly business and takes you through the very bowels of the whole business.
You could literally start, run and retire from the business with this book as a guide. It is very in-depth.

Customer Reviews:
Feisty woman and carefree rogue meet their matches in each other.......2007-06-12
This book is another instalment in Jo Beverley's Rogues series and it's a reasonable read although with some faults.
Miles Cavanagh, heir to his Uncle's earldom, is an Irish horsebreeder who is one of the Company of Rogues, a group of men who forged their friendship at school. Miles is very annoyed to discover that he's been made guardian to a relative of his stepfather's who attains her majority at 21 in six weeks. Miles wants to go to Melton for the hunting but realises he must go and meet his ward, Felicity Monahan, as he's heard a rumour that she's trouble.
On the way to Felicity's home, Foy, he and another man are set upon by masked men and Miles is tied up. A woman is sent to untie him eventually and she uses her very considerable charms to deflect any anger he might have with her. She says her name is Joy, behaves very seductively, and lets him go. However Miles soon discovers that she is actually his ward and that she plans to marry Dunsmore, a recent widower with a young son but who is clearly a fortune hunter. Miles plans to keep Felicity from Dunsmore's grasp but doesn't realise the danger that this will put him in of being seduced by her charms.
There's more to Felicity's plan to marry Dunsmore than initially meets the eye and it takes all Miles's ingenuity to keep her from throwing her life away with the awful man. There are lots of arguments between hero and heroine, he kidnaps her, she tries to elope, they bicker and argue and eventually end up in bed (which is pretty appalling behaviour for her guardian!) Miles enlists the help of the Rogues to aid him in his endeavours to keep Felicity safe, to marry her, to rescue Dunsmore's son and to deal with Dunsmore.
The dialogue in this book is good with the bickering between Miles and Felicity fun to read. However a lot of the plot rests on assumptions Felicity makes about her options to do with Kieran, Dunsmore's son, and I felt that sometimes this was rather drawn out and another woman in her circumstances would have just told Miles the full story. Equally his behaviour is rather inappropriate towards his ward who behaves in such an amazingly unladylike way it's hard to believe she isn't shunned by her neighbours. There's a mini supernatural element with the cats and lots of reference to Irish historical characters which might interest some but didn't entirely work for me. Overall the book felt rather like an also-ran with some good parts but the overall experience not enjoyable enough to land this book on my keeper shelf.

Dangerous Joy.......2007-01-03
rarely have I come across a book by Jo Beverly I haven't liked. Actually, never. She makes history come alive in the pages of her books.
not Beverley's usual fare.......2005-04-18
Dangerous Joy is different than a lot of other Beverley novels because it's not particuarly wicked. I tend to associate Beverley with dark atmospheres and dangerous heroes; this book is set in bright and green Ireland, and Miles is as sweet as can be. It's still Beverley, however, which means it's well written and all in all a pretty good read.
The plot of Dangerous Joy depends on the heroine Felicity's desire to sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of her son. She has decided, before the start of the novel, to marry a hideous, sadistic cretin who happens to be the father of her child. She is willing to accept a life of suffering and pain in order to have access to the boy, who would otherwise be taken away.
As far as that goes, fine. She's a mother; she's in a sticky situation; and the child is her first priority.
What I can't understand is Felicity's attitude. She won't be honest and share her worries with Miles; she won't consider other options. Miles is patient, caring and competent...Felicity has no reason at all not to trust him. As it becomes more and more obvious that Miles will do whatever he can to help her - including involving his many powerful friends - Felicity's negative attitude and total inability to reassess the situation became more and more grating. Really, I had lost all respect for her by the time she finally, grudgingly admits that maybe there's another way.
I know that romance novels depend on deferred satisfaction. The novels succeed or fail depending on how well they're able to maintain a high pitch of tension over four hundred pages of text. I know something has to keep Felicity and Miles apart, but I wish it weren't Felicity's immaturity.
The series justs get better.......2004-09-11
Miles is given the guardianship of Felicity for a few weeks. She is determined to marry a man she detests to protect her secret. Miles has his hands full with Felicity, getting her out of scrapes. He kidnaps her & stows away to England to keep her out of harms way. She is determined to elope with Rupert & must come up with a plan to ensure it.
I just loved this book & the series so far. I can't wait to read the rest.
