5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation on Leadershipattributes for innovation.......2002-08-31

Excellent compilation on Leadership attributes for innovation and is a collection of well written articles which made me think and connect to a real world phenomenon. I enjoy reading Peter Drucker's books and the content of the book has Peter Drucker's flavor to it. The Clarity and style of this book is truly outstanding.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2002-02-09

Some 23 experts on management from academia and the private sector share their ideas on how you can take that bloated bureaucracy and turn it into a nimble and innovative machine. The book offers no quick fixes, as illustrated by the authors' observation that innovation is a culture, and not an event. Of special interest is the included list of practices that squelch innovation. We [...] recommend this book, which was inspired by management science pioneer Peter F. Drucker, for executives and all devoted students of the management arts.

5 out of 5 stars Really great leadership writing.......2001-11-15

Most collected volumes have a few good essays and then you can take or leave the rest. But all of the essays in this book are more than worth the price of the whole book. I was blown away by the depth of wisdom and insight in this collection. You get Charles Handy, Margaret Wheatley, Clayton Christensen, Jim Collins, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter.

I'm always pressed for time and I loved how each one of these essays offered me something I could use in my daily work. There are so many things that can get in the way of being an effective leader and this book helped me think in new ways and look at my organization-an myself-in a new way.

I get the Drucker Foundation's journal, Leader to Leader, and always get great stuff out of it. This collection met all of the expectations I had of a book from the Drucker Foundation.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Collected Genius on Innovation.......2001-10-20

The Drucker Foundation has done it again. Gathered a remarkable collection of thought leaders (see the list below) and asked them to write on a critical issue -- leading innovation.

Each chapter is short and easy to absorb, but the collection provides a powerful set of ideas about how leaders can make innovation happen in their organization, whether it's a business, a nonprofit, or a government.

For anyone who has wandered out beyond the usual borders of psychology and religion, Richard Moss's work is a pure gift, an oasis, and a place to heal. Despite his extraordinary experiences and profound realization, he is straightforward, unpretentious, and lucid. Better than anyone I know, he brings the transcendent truth into incarnate ordinariness, with humility, humor, and the grace of compassion. I have found his works, particularly this one, to be friends on the path--friends I keep going back to time and again. I cannot recommend his work highly enough to those on the journey of consciousness.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful experience for any awakening person........1999-06-28

Dr. Moss writes of his own powerful, beautiful, and totally spontaneous awakening experience and how he struggled to understand it and, through it, begin the process of living a life of "radical alivesness". In the book he shares his awakened understandings and the experiences of some of his patients and members of his classes and groups.

I first read the book ten years ago and it had such a tremendous and beautiful impact upon my consciousness that I am still telling people about it today. I was so glad to see it listed on Amazon.com because it was unavailable for awhile.

The message of the book is just as beautiful and important today. Dr. Moss writes that "Awakening is going on in varying degrees in every person. It is not something from which we can turn away".

In the closing chapter Dr. Moss relates the story of a patient whose awakening during a retreat was so powerful that it resulted in a spontaneous healing of cancer and other negative physical conditions.

A must read for evryone who is coming "awake".

        Book Description

The Secret Lives of Fishermen is Jim Dean's second book of essays celebrating wild places, rural traditions, and the pleasures and often humorous frustrations of fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping—or, as Dean might put it, "messing around" outdoors. It combines essays originally published in his monthly "Our Natural Heritage" column in Wildlife in North Carolina with longer pieces that appeared in other magazines. These forty-six engaging essays are arranged in a loose chronicle of the sporting year, but they seldom follow predictable routes. From a whimsical story about discovering live wood ducks in a cabin stove to a poignant memoir of summers spent in a remote riverside shack, all of the pieces are bound by a conviction that our resources and time are limited and our finest memories are shared.

The title notwithstanding, not all of the essays in The Secret Lives of Fishermen are about fishing, nor are readers likely to discover any shocking secrets—unless they are surprised to learn that fishermen and hunters have myriad interests and seldom measure success by the number of fish caught or game bagged.

        Book Description

Waterfowlers may be passionate-even obsessive-about their sport, but at least they don't take themselves too seriously. That's because duck and goose hunting is so often a humbling experience. In that respect, these 20 stories by Doug Larson are like the classic wildfowl tales of, say, Gordon MacQuarrie-that is, they celebrate the sport of waterfowling while tickling the funny bone.
But while Larson is in many ways a traditionalist when it comes to waterfowling-and storytelling-his voice is refreshingly new.
Larson's subject, in fact, is the modern hunter's struggle to come to terms with the past while living fully in the present. For instance, while he expresses a love for the hardy duck chasers in canvas coats who humped dozens of cork decoys through mud and mire to secret blinds, he also admits "adapting" to the comforts and conveniences of four-wheel ATVs, portable blind heaters, hollow-body plastic decoys, and polyester "fleece" parkas. On the other hand, he takes pokes at the modern trend to overcomplicate the sport. "Whatever happened to throwing rocks?" he asks in a chapter on
        motion decoys.
Though the book finds humor in the "small" moments associated with duck and goose hunting, it occasionally delivers a real zinger that will bring tears to the reader's eyes, as in the hilarious chapter titled "Concrete," in which Larsen discovers what can happen when a son takes his non-hunting dad waterfowling for the first time.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars YA Baby!!.......2006-08-22

This book is great. The author laid out some great, and humorous adventures of his duck hunting.

        5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2003-02-17

I always thought a person had to be out of his/her mind to wander outdoors in sub-zero temperatures, no matter what the attraction awaiting them! Doug Larsen makes a very strong case for the ones who do, and I admit that there might be a powerful reason for this activity. I still would rather spend my time indoors, but reading about his antics and his reflections made me laugh, cry and identify with many of his well-thought statements. Loved the book and hope it is not Doug's last!

5 out of 5 stars Why You Shouldn't Shoot the Decoys.......2003-02-15

After reading this book, I realized all the joys of hunting. Doug is a fabulous author, and I can't wait for a sequel.
I love his vivid descriptions and sense of humor, but the serious stories are great too. My favorite chapters are Wet Cement and 147, but they are all superb. If you like to hunt, fish, or even hike, this is a fantastic book for you. So let Doug take you hunting, I promise it will be unforgettable!

5 out of 5 stars An Authentic Voice of Duck Hunting.......2003-02-13

Even when he's being wry and funny, Doug Larsen is being himself, a straight shooter that tells us what he really thinks and feels about the sport of waterfowling. These stories are authentic and very engaging. I especially enjoyed the one called "Wet Cement," about Doug taking his dad duck hunting, and the one about Doug taking his young daughter hunting for the first time. Sometimes we get cynical and think that the young writers are dogs compared to the old lions of the past, but hey, this young dog can hunt! Buy this book and you'll see that good writing still has the power to entertain and inform us, even in this new and troubling century.

5 out of 5 stars his next book.......2003-01-02

Read the book even though I didn't know a thing about duck hunting and didn't quite understand the obsession. It taught me so much in such an entertaining way. Can't wait to be a chapter in Doug Larsen's next book!

          Book Description

Do you "know" that posh comes from an acronym meaning "port out, starboard home"? That "the whole nine yards" comes from (pick one) the length of a WWII gunner's belt; the amount of fabric needed to make a kilt; a sarcastic football expression? That Chicago is called "The Windy City" because of the bloviating habits of its politicians, and not the breeze off the lake? If so, you need this book. David Wilton debunks the most persistently wrong word histories, and gives, to the best of our actual knowledge, the real stories behind these perennially mis-etymologized words. In addition, he explains why these wrong stories are created, disseminated, and persist, even after being corrected time and time again. What makes us cling to these stories, when the truth behind these words and phrases is available, for the most part, at any library or on the Internet? Arranged by chapters, this book avoids a dry A-Z format. Chapters separate misetymologies by kind, including The Perils of Political Correctness (picnics have nothing to do with lynchings), Posh, Phat Pommies (the problems of bacronyming--the desire to make every word into an acronym), and CANOE (which stands for the Conspiracy to Attribute Nautical Origins to Everything). Word Myths corrects long-held and far-flung examples of wrong etymologies, without taking the fun out of etymology itself. It's the best of both worlds: not only do you learn the many wrong stories behind these words, you also learn why and how they are created--and what the real story is.

Have you heard that Eskimos have 500 words for "snow"? What does the international distress signal "SOS" mean? Do you know what an "aptronym" is? Have you noticed that some nautical enthusiasts attribute a maritime origin to nearly every word or phrase? This observation prompted one participant of an online discussion group to use the acronym "CANOE" to mean the "Conspiracy to Attribute Nautical Origins to Everything"! You'll discover that many etymologies you thought you "knew," you really didn't know at all. This little 200-page book was just great fun and most enlightening to read. I've referred to it often in my university communication classes -- a great resource for anyone interested in the origins and use of English words and phrases -- well researched and well written. Kudos to author David Wilton!

1 out of 5 stars Awful book- don't waste your time........2007-02-26

I'm pursuing a Master's degree in Language and Literature. One of our assignments was to find an unusual linguistic book. I found this book at Borders and thought it would be great.... I was wrong.

This book, at first glance, looks to be a fun little trivia book on language myths. I studied urban legends for my undergrad in cultural studies; this book should have been right up my alley. Instead, I found myself laughing out loud at the poor rationalizations for debunking myths. I was actually offended by the poor sentence structure, unfortunate grammar usage, and sloppy research. Note to David Wilton: a dictionary and a Google search do NOT equal extensive or scholarly research! And fire your editor.

Wilton's analytical skills leave a lot to be desired, and it is obvious that he has not taken many writing classes. This book can BY NO MEANS be used as a scholarly source. If you have 2 minutes to kill, maybe this book is worth glancing at, but avoid it for anything more substantial. And don't believe what you read; the research is even sloppier than the writing.

          5 out of 5 stars A lively read.......2007-01-23

Wilton has a lively writing style, his research is impeccable, and his choice of topics is interesting. I particularly liked the article on which the clever cover is based. He is the author also of A Way With Words, an electronic newsletter that presents linguistic facts and debunks factoids, a word probably related to truthiness, a recent entry.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and funny.......2006-11-09

It is rare for a book about language to be both informative and entertaining. This is a light read, with content broken up into easily-digested bites, yet it manages to be smart and instructive. Some of the myths in the book are ones I've heard debunked before, but it was still worthwhile to read about them because Wilton provided details and documentation...and best of all, he takes a subject that many people find stuffy and dry, and makes it fun.
Some readers may be irritated by the dead-end etymologies. Personally, I appreciate honest scholars. Wilton acknowledges that it is sometimes impossible to be certain of a word's etymology, and refuses to state "likely" or "probable" origins of words or phrases as fact.
