Easy to Understand Economics??.......2001-05-17
You're absolutely correct!! I was a student of Prof. Gottheil the first year he released this book. The teachings of the book make Macro-Economics both easy to understand and enjoyable. I've recommended this book to both undergrads and MBA students alike, and have not received a single complaints (but have received much praise).

Good Introduction to Entomology.......2001-08-28
Dr. Pedigo's book is one of the better general entomology/ pest management textbooks that I have read. It is written in an understandable format and provides a good introduction to the structure, function, taxonomy, and applied ecology of insects. This volume is most appropriate for the undergraduate student interested in entomology although it would also be a handy addition to a graduate student's library as well. As with many introductory entomology textbooks, the taxonomic keys are very limited. I would recommend Borror, Triplehorn, and Johnson's: An introduction to the study of insects to anyone who desires a book with a good set of taxonomic keys.

Customer Reviews:
ontological roots of schizophrenia.......2007-01-10
This is an interesting book on how schizophrenia is more of an 'existential' problem than an illness. I think it has some real practical applications for those who work with this population. I wouldn't, however, throw out the more clinical way of viewing psychosis.
R. D. Laing is good .......2006-11-10
In particular, I endorse the back cover of another of his books, where it says that schizophrenics constantly try to escape because they perceive it is impossible to fulfill their needs. He stated it in a better way, of course; this is just how I remember it.
respect.......2006-09-07
i just think that this book should be one that everyone reads at some point in their lives (sooner rather than later!). it really gives you something special, something i have very rarely experienced in a book. open the book and open your mind!
The engine of the Sixties! Or, one of 'em........2005-09-23
This book felt to me strangely intimate, and understanding when I first read it. Laing, who was a clinical psychiatrist, presents case studies of people who feel overly self-conscious and self-critical, fearful to be on the street alone, hiding from social contact -- common enough feelings which he treats with supreme empathy, not judgement or haste to reform. He explains in the preface his analysis is based on existenstial thought, yet, he avoids the amoralistic tendencies of this genre of philosophy. His emphasis is more on the process of alienation of self from self, and inner self from outer self, into a "split." He gives analysis of the so-described schizoid and schizophrenic personality, attempts to analyze why a person slips into so-called "psychosis" -- in his analysis a schizophrenic person is forming a logical reaction to an untenable situation. Here he leans on other writers, such as Gregory Bateson's double-bind theory.
Laing's writing is poetic in some places, and is literate in a way psychology books seldom are. i recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to know more about their own behavior, and others'.
An existential approach to the conception of the self.......2005-05-18
In this valuable study, Dr Laing proposes to examine the way some individuals are very proficient in acquiring a false self in order to adapt to false realities and to give an account of specifically personal forms of depersonalisation and disintegration. It is no small task for the therapist to articulate what the patient's "world" is and his way of being in it in order to outline his psychopathology. The author states that if we look at his actions as signs of a disease, we impose categories of thoughts on the patient in our effort to try to explain his mental state and it isn't easy for the therapist to transpose himself into the patient's strange and alien view of world in order to understand his existential position.
Dr Laing states that many patients suffer from "ontological insecurity" because they feel insubstantial, the ordinary circumstances of life constituting a continual threat to their own existence. He mentions personalities like Franz Kafka, Samuel Beckett and Francis Bacon. Then Dr Laing proceeds by giving the account of three forms of anxiety encountered by the ontologically insecure subject: engulfment, implosion and petrification. To illustrate these three forms, the author describes the case of Mrs R. who suffered from agoraphobia and schizohphrenic withdrawal.
Interestingly enough, the schizoid individual constantly feels vulnerable as he is exposed by the look of another person and that is why he fears live dialectical relationships with live people and prefers to relate himself to depersonalised persons or to phantoms of his own fantasies, thus the distinction between the "embodied" and "unembodied" self. Such an individual is afraid of the world, frightened that any impingement will be total and engulfing. He is afraid of letting himself "go", of coming out of himself or of losing himself because he feels that he will be depleted, exhausted, emptied, robbed or sucked dry. So for the schizoid individual, direct participation in life is felt as being at a risk of being destroyed by life. One aspect of this individual's ontological insecurity is the precariousness of his subjective sense of his own aliveness and the sense that others threaten this tentative feeling. The schizoid individual strongly believes in his own destructiveness by others. This view is in accord to the existentialist's philosophy represented by Jean-Paul Sartre who stated in his famous theatre play "Huis Clos" that "L'enfer, c'est les autres."
Thus a false self can arise in the individual which is in compliance with the intentions and expectations of the other or with what are imagined to be the other's intentions or expectations. Indeed, the self-conscious person feels he is more the object of other people's interest than in fact he is. And so the schizoid individual carries out defences like being like everyone else, being someone other than oneself, playing a part, being nobody or being incognito and anonymous. So if the gaze of others is experienced as a threat, there is a constant dread and resentment at being turned into someone else's thing (what Sartre called "l'être-pour-autrui"), of being penetrated by him, and a sense of being in someone else's power and control. Freedom then consists in being inaccessible. Love too for schizoid individuals is viewed as disguised persecution since it aims to turn him into an object of the other.
This type of individual can be himself in safety only in isolation. With others he plays an elaborate game of pretence and his social life is felt to be false and futile. But the more he keeps his "true self" concealed and unseen, the more he presents to others a false front and the more compulsive this fake presentation of himself becomes. This can lead to a complete disintegration of the personality.

Book Description
A new model of tourism development has recently emerged out of a widening concern for the morality of tourist experience. Known variously as ‘ecotourism’, ‘new tourism’, socially responsible tourism’, huge claims are made for it in terms of what it might offer in promoting national tourism development. Yet how well does this new model work in practice? And what does it mean to be an international tourist encountering the cultural, political and economic particularities of the South African experience? Garth Allen and Frank Brennan seek to explore the realities of this new morality of tourism as experienced in four important tourist areas of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa: the greater St Lucia Wetland Park - South Africa’s third largest reserve and a vast and beautiful area accredited World Heritage Status; the Phinda Resource Reserve, renowned for its diverse habitats and rich wildlife; Kosi Bay, a wetland area of international importance; and the Durban beachfront. For the first time they try to locate the international tourist within the moral maze of tourism in the new South Africa. Their analysis can be applied to other societies committed to the belief that investing in tourism development will be a fast track to economic development and will resonate with the moral challenges facing the international tourist.

Book Description
Jerry Reynolds was country before country was cool. He also was part of the Sacramento Kings before that was cool. The Kings are celebrating their 20th season in California's capital, and Jerry has been there from the start. Quietly, he has been instrumental in the team's growth from a shoestring operation that couldn't compete to a model NBA franchise that is always on the short list of title contenders. He has been a first-hand witness of the league's evolution from Bird and Magic, to Jordan, to LeBron and Yao Ming. Jerry Reynolds has been a human Swiss Army Knife?serving the Kings as a scout, assistant coach, head coach, player personnel director, general manager, and television analyst. Because he has held so many positions in the Kings' front office the last two decades, Jerry has a unique perspective on how the Kings have evolved. For those who've been on the Kings bandwagon only the last few years, it wasn?t always C-Webb, Peja, and Bibby.
Customer Reviews:
His memoir celebrates their growth and provides a powerful leader's first-person experiences.......2006-02-06
Jerry Reynolds and Don Drysdale's Reynolds Remembers: 25 Years With The Sacramento Kings is for any interested in the evolution of a shortstring operation which couldn't compete to a model NBA franchise. The Kings are celebrating their 20th season in Sacramento, California - and Jerry Reynolds was part of them before their rise to fame. His memoir celebrates their growth and provides a powerful leader's first-person experiences.
The Best Tuesday Night Team.......2005-12-29
Remember that? This is a must read/item for those that have lived the history. If you've been part of the ride, then you know the story. But Jerry Reynolds has filled in the blanks with information that you could only get from... well, from Jerry Reynolds: The front office background on the Terry Tyler and Derek Smith trades; Bobby Hurley's potential and toughness; the head coach candidates; actual Bill Russell conversations (apparently he could talk... and laugh). What? We could have "stole" Detlef Schrempf!?!? The book even helped explain my "unique" encounter with Jawann Oldham on the day he was cut loose by the Kings.
Aside from all the great Kings gems that have been unearthed, there is some foreground on Jerry himself as well as documentation of his "rise" up the organization. Like everyone else, I would have liked for the book to be longer--182 pages for 20 years is just not enough. Oh well, Reynolds Remembers is a great and easy read, but to the Kings fan, it's truly great literature--the man did minor in English after all.
I "Remember" Too.......2005-12-13
The details within "Reynolds Remembers" paint a vivid and entertaining picture of what life was like for a struggling and then reborn NBA franchise. It was filled with anecdotes and humorous observations of true events. I enjoyed it very much.
Although, I wish there had been more than a single page describing Jerry's "the Carly Simon period." Maybe we'll hear more in a sequel.
The Most Enjoyable 182 Pages I Have Ever Read........2005-11-27
I have been a Kings fan my whole life and I truly enjoyed reliving the past 20 years with Reynolds. It is amazing on how fast we forget the early teams and players and how soon we get used to 50 win seasons. Reynolds uses the same humor and great one-liners in the book that he uses in his telecasts. I just wish the book contained more personal stories and memories and I can only hope that a sequel is in the works. Here's to another great 20 years of Reynolds and to another book.
More, More!!.......2005-11-09
A riveting read. I could not put this book down. A truly must read for all Sacramento Kings fans. A book any real NBA fan should enjoy. Being able to learn some of the inner thoughts of a real NBA insider is rare.
If only there had been more amusing stories and anecdotes Reynolds is so well known for. These reflecting the personalities of NBA players few of us fans ever see. Maybe this will be in Reynolds next book "Reynolds Remembers More" ?? We can only hope!!
Book Description
When too tightly leashed, writing chokes and loses its vitality. Although the rules of composition popularized in William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White’s Elements of Style have been de rigueur for decades, they won’t exactly set your writing free.
To the rescue comes Spunk & Bite, a guide to bold and radiant language and style. The secret, according to bestselling author and former publishing executive Arthur Plotnik, is to embrace those qualities that composition rulebooks sidestep–among them, surprise, personality, engagement, edge, and fearlessness. Drawing on selections from today’s most exciting writers–Jonathan Franzen, Sandra Cisneros, Bill Bryson, Maureen Dowd, and many dozens more–Plotnik reveals the tricks and techniques that make prose fresh, forceful, and publishable.
For all types of writing–novels, articles, poems, ad copy, blogs, and even e-mail–this uncommon handbook reveals how to make your words so fetching that readers beg for more.
Arthur Plotnik is an author, and former publishing executive. Two of his works have been featured as Book of the Month Club selections: The Elements of Editing and The Elements of Expression: Putting Thoughts into Words . Reviewers have consistently praised Plotnik’s writing for its accuracy, style, and wit, often ranking it with Strunk & White in practicality.
Plotnik studied under Philip Roth and Vance Bourjaily at the Iowa Writers Workshop . As a publisher, he brought five national awards to the American Library Association’s book imprint. He also won numerous honors as editor of ALA’s flagship magazine, American Libraries.
Customer Reviews:
Brainwarping Material.......2007-10-16
Reading this book is like sitting down with a teacher whose lessons answer questions you didn't even know you had. I've always known what writing I like and what writing I disklike, but now I have a better idea of why.
Spunk & Bite: Amusing Muse.......2007-08-24
Spunk & Bite is the ham to Strunk & White's eggs, the salt to their pepper, the bloom booster to their weed killer. Strunk & White is the noble march of the penguins; Spunk & Bite is exhilarating eagles' flight. Grounding is good. So is soaring. Plotnick's advice has rules, just as Strunk & White's classic Elements of Style does. But Plotnick encourages writers not to remain penguinized, and he shows how to fly--with both flight and crash examples from literature. How could advice labeled "The Confident Tagmeister," "Words with Foreign Umami," and "Rope-a-Trope Contenders" not inspire creativity? If you are a writer, do not miss this fresh education. If you are simply a word lover, do not miss this fresh education. Every chapter delightfully embodies Plotnick's phrase: "language: acrobatic and incandescent." A bonus is Plotnick's light tone--you will laugh as you learn.
Not necessarily for business communicators.......2007-07-20
Although this book is probably very helpful for fiction and feature writers, I don't believe it is as useful for business communicators, which the book states as a target audience. The reason is that Plotnik places too much emphasis on cleverness over clarity, which isn't appropriate in most business communications. I also found his attempts to demonstrate cleverness in his own writing was excessive and tiresome to read as a result. He might better have followed the advice of Strunk & White about using familiar words to clearly state the principles, then left the cleverness to the examples.
Refreshing.......2007-06-28
Not your standard 'elements of style' type book. I actually felt like the author was talking to me. I gained a lot of confidence by reading this book. It teaches you that some rules should be broken...and that they're not necessarily rules, only 'old school' guidelines. I felt much better about my use of adverbs in my own writing after reading "Spunk and Bite." I won't ever loan it out...I refer to it often! Excellent reference book!
GREAT Book for ALL who Write!.......2007-05-08
Do you write for business publications? Fiction? Research or ?
You should own this book.
Your ability to create dynamic copy will make you memorable, whether it's a simple email or a thank you note to a friend.
As an author who writes regularly for business audiences, I've found Plotnik's book one of the most valuable resources on my well-stocked shelves.

Customer Reviews:
Rough is right!.......2007-10-16
While reading this book didn't make my knees buckle or cause me to become light-headed, there were some pretty careless mistakes. The writing is pretty terrible, and it has the annoying tone of a gossip column. The whole book is laid out in a bullet(ish) People magazine style.
It has no value as a reference book, since you can't trust any information in it as being true. I thought I was learning some interesting stuff until the moment I hit my third stupid error; so now everything in it is suspect. I think a lot of the trouble can be attributed to careless writing and not checking one's sources.
On the plus side (and even though the interior art and layout is pretty lame), I found the size, shape, and stupid Spiderman cover strangely alluring. Its just a neat size; maybe somebody could write a factual reference book in this format.
Extensive? No? Fun Overview? Yes?.......2007-06-06
It is a rough guide, not an encyclopedia. It gives you a fast running overview of the four colored world of comics in a fun and fast way. A nice quick subway read that will leave a smile on your face.
Not as bad as all that. . ........2006-01-29
OK, let me say that Mr. "worst... comic-book book... ever" review guy almost had me until I read the last line. The books he reccomends instead of this one are pretty much crap with a pile of fact errors of their own. So if this guy likes those books and dislikes this one, then this one must be OK, right? Well, anyway, I generally really like the Rough Guides so I gave it a look.
For a start, it really will give a comic book expert a heart attack. I spotted mistake after mistake. For example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer lives in Sunnyvale (wrong, Sunnydale). Tarzan had his own comic book in the early-1930s (wrong, Tarzan didn't get his own comic until 1948. All previous comic book Tarzan stories were newspaper strip reprints). I could go on and on.
On the flip side, the book also gets quite a few things right. The casual reader won't know that the mistakes are mistakes. What this book needed was an editor who actually knew something about comic books and super heroes. Not trash but read it at your own risk.
worst... comic-book book... ever.......2005-02-28
This reference is near useless. It's full of misinformation and factual errors that'll make a casual fan go "that's not right", infuriate a die-hard fan, and cause the Comic Book Guy to have an aneurysm. It's not even visually appealing. If you really care about this stuff, get the Essential versions of the Marvel Handbooks instead.
Great OVERVIEW of the Comics world..........2004-10-23
If you'd like to learn all about comics, this is a good starting point. The book covers the historical context, the creators, the superheroes themselves and the public's fascination with this entertainment genre.
Why are people fascinated with comics? Why the appeal? This book answers these questions, and shows how comic characters have influenced and been influenced by culture, especially in North America. You'll learn about the creators of Superman, the Marvel characters and a host of other creative geniuses who have encouraged us to take a break from reality and enjoy the world where superheroes fight for right and justice.
The book is a fun read, with lots of interesting trivia and surprises. A great look at the philosophy behind, and people's need for, superheroes. Great reading!
