Excellent in both style and substance.......2005-05-17

This is a crisply written, elegant book that analyses and describes the practices of silicon valley in a way that is at once readable, informative, and inspirational. In less than 200 pages, the authors describe (with entertaining and instructive examples interspersed) the silicon valley ecosystem. This ecosystem has been resiliant through the ups and downs of the past 20 years, and has been the engine behind the productivity of the US economy.

It is said that if you really know your stuff, you can describe it simply and clearly. Bahrami and Evans know their stuff. They have lived and breathed with the creators of silicon valley for 20+ years, and the book is peppered with insights and personal anecdotes, and quotes from personal conversations with some of the legends of silicon valley.

This is a book that would be equally applicable to the academic, the educator, and the entrepreneur. This is a must read for communities outside silicon valley that have wrestled over how to create entrepreneurial energy in their midst (European and Asian governments come to mind). The formula for success is spelled out (though how to get there is less clear).

I found the book to be particularly good at surfacing broadly applicable principles. The phrase they coin, super-flexibility, is expressive and right-on. The impressive bibliography shows they have done their homework.

This book is a good read: well-written, fast paced, analytical and anecdotally rich. It fills a real need. Though I have lived in silicon valley for almost 3 decades, I learned a lot by reading it, and would recommend it broadly.

A rigorous conceptualization.......2004-12-23

This is a mind-blowing book, bulit on the authors 20-years experience. I would recommend this book to those with a research orientation. Read it, and u will find it really offers an integrated view of flexibility better than any one else. The only drawback lies with weak applications of managerial mechanisms.

I agree with some of the other reviewers who recommended "real world" books by Beitler, Schein, Kotter, and other authors. Cummings and Worley's work is only helpful if you are an academic trying to understand the real world.

The Worst Book on OD.......2003-08-28

I am an enthuastic OD practitioner who loves the field of OD. I am amazed at how two academics could present OD as boring and lifeless.

Excellent textbook for Organization Change and Dev't Class.......2003-08-12

As an OD practitioner and faculty who teaches Org Change, I find Cummings and Worley's book superb. The case studies are short enough to use in class. Students find the writing style clear and understandable. And the book grounds its practical advice in theories and models that students can use for years after completing the class. The instructor's guide provides excellent insights into cases, but gives poorly written assessment items for use on tests. All textbooks have tradeoffs. On the academic side, this book lacks references to empirical research that students could follow up on. On the practical side, it lacks comparisons between interventions that practitioners choose from. It doesn't provide a personal wisdom that some readers would want. But it does provide engaging content that's clear enough for students recently out of college and deep enough for mid-career professionals who are reading the book for a class.

This book is 700 pages of academic nonsense. If you are a practitioner, buy "Strategic Organizational Change" by Beitler.

This is a very good book that clearly shows the fundementals of wrestling. The basic wrestling skills and drills in the book are all very useful for beginning to intermediate wrestlers.

This book trys to explain the basics of wrestling, and how to coach the sport. It skips over many of the basics of the sport. Wrestling is a very complex and difficult sport, and although you must start somewhere, the book fails to recognize this aspect. This book also doesnt flow correctly and is out of order. Overall I would rate this book a one star, becuase it is too simple and most things are obvious even to a beginer.

Favorite Graphic Design Book.......2007-09-21

I just finished reading all but one or two chapters of this book for a class where this was the primary text. I have to say that this book goes everywhere with me and has become a favorite. Compared to the other text books I had this semester (and many others as well), this was a breath of fresh air. The writing was never dry and it never dragged. What I read really stuck with me and I looked forward to my weekly reading. Also having the exercises at the end of most of the chapters is wonderful for a student for further learning that truly is self-paced. I plan on doing most, if not all of these exercises for further practice. I am definitely going to have to look into Landa's other titles as well.

Was advised to buy from instrucor as additional class materials and found I love this book! Covers from core information to breaking down new media and cutting edge styles. Would not go without this book if you are interested in learning about graphic design as an art and a science. Great organization and use of information -good for any level designer.

I am taking a night course that required this book. Amazon.com had the best price. The book itself has many beautiful graphic illustrations and the text is fairly easy to read. It is not the total snoozer I thought it would be and has many fun projects to illustrate the points made in the text. All-in-all not a bad course book although this is not something I would have ever picked up for personal reading.

Daniel Kelemen develops a theory of regulatory federalism based on his comparative study, arguing that the greater the fragmentation of power at the federal level, the less discretion is allotted to component states. Kelemen's analysis offers a novel perspective on the EU and demonstrates that the EU already acts as a federal polity in the regulatory arena.

In The Rules of Federalism, Kelemen shows that both the structure of the EU's institutions and the control these institutions exert over member states closely resemble the American federal system, with its separation of powers, large number of veto points, and highly detailed, judicially enforceable legislation. In the EU, as in the United States, a high degree of fragmentation in the central government yields a low degree of discretion for member states when it comes to implementing regulatory statutes.
