This is a good book, but it is not one of the best. Get copies of Kotter, Schein, Beitler, or Collins' books.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent How To Guide on Managing/Creating Change........1999-04-19

I found the book to be extremely informative. Douglas Smith has done a masterfull job of creating a step by step guide for the process of both Creating and Managing Change in any organization. He also points out why many Change Efforts fail. The 10 step guide that he has created should help us all avoid the common pitfalls of this process and help greatly improve our odds of success. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either thinking about starting a change effort or currently in the midst of one now.

5 out of 5 stars The best hand-on book about Change Management available........1998-07-15

This is clearly the best book about the practical side of Change Management I've read so far (and I've read more then 20 by now). This book really helps me in my day-to-day work as a Change Manager. Smith has closed a big gap in the Change Management literature, this is the most practical book you can look for! Highly recommended.

          Book Description

While the commitment to protect and restore forest ecosystems has become a policy goal in many countries since the Rio Conference, there is still no general consensus on what constitutes restoration. This authoritative reference presents the best practices for fostering increased sustainability, enhancing biodiversity, and repairing ecosystem functions in one comprehensive volume. Written by internationally recognized experts and practitioners, Restoration of Boreal and Temperate Forests summarizes the breadth of restoration protocols at both the local and regional scale and documents and compares over 20 case studies of forest restoration projects in a geographically diverse range of temperate and boreal zones. The authors take into account the impact of human activities from a historical and cultural context and consider regional socioeconomic needs in developing a sustainable forest management plan. The book provides insight into how logistical questions are currently being answered for temperate and boreal forests. By addressing both ecological and sociopolitical needs, this book presents practical solutions for the restoration, rehabilitation, reclamation, and management of forest ecosystems. Restoration of Boreal and Temperate Forests is an excellent source of information for researchers, managers, policymakers, and graduate students in forestry and ecology.

          Book Description

Sometimes controversial, invariably fascinating, Lacan's psycholinguistic approach to analysis of the psychoses is seen here in virtually unmediated form. Taking us into and beyond the realm of Freudian psychoanalysis, Lacan examines the psychoses' inescapable connection to the symbolic process through which signifier is joined with signified. Lacan deftly navigates the ontological levels of the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real to explain psychosis as "foreclosure," or rejection of the primordial signifier. Then, bridging the gap between the theoretical and the practical, Lacan discusses the implications for treatment. In these lectures on the psychoses, Lacan's renowned theory of metaphor and metonymy, along with the concept of the "quilting point," appears for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Jacques Lacan's Seminar on The Psychoses.......2006-10-29

This is an essential book for understanding Lacan's overall theoretical framework. Despite the esoteric sounding title, it is not just for specialists and doesn't just treat the subject of psychosis. Lacan reviews and repeats here with greater clarity the theories he developed in his first two seminars.

5 out of 5 stars Lacan and the father.......2000-09-24

Lacan's seminars are superior to his articles because he clearly is addressing an audience, and needs to make himself understood, but he has already anticipated all of his students questions, as if he could read their minds: "I know what you're thinking." The argument of the third seminar is easy to summarize: the psychotic, because foreclosed from the father, faces a hole in the imaginary that is filled by the symbolic (or is it the other way around?), hence the hallucinations and voices. The psychotic always imagines that somewhere the big Other resides, in this world, like the man who broke into the US capital because there was a time machine inside that was trying to control his mind. The psychotic is in fact unable to distinguish the small from the big other. Lacan is always thought to be a little mad himself, something of a fraud, "il gagne beaucoup d'argent," and even Heidegger gave up reading Ecrits because he couldn't make sense of it, and he does make something of a display of his learning (not so much in this seminar). That said, there is something to Lacan, and eventually he will get his due, and outside the narrow circle of his devotees.

5 out of 5 stars A Lacan to be Read.......2000-03-12

The work of Jacques Lacan is infamous for the often obtuseness of its language and presentation. It is often said that the reader must work hard at Lacan to reach a glimmer of understanding. The work of Dr Russell Grigg as translator to this edition certainly gives the reader a head start. Dr Grigg address the work of Lacan from a new perspective of the 21st century, nolonger happy for the work to remain arcane and cloistered from the reading public, but he throws open the windows of further understanding for those willing to look and read closer the work of this French master. An excellent work.

            Book Description

This book will provide a complete overview of an alpine ecosystem, based on the long-term research conducted at the Niwot Ridge LTER. There is, at present, no general book on alpine ecology. The alpine ecosystem features conditions near the limits of biological existence, and is a useful laboratory for asking more general ecological questions, because it offers large environmental change over relatively short distances. Factors such as macroclimate, microclimate, soil conditions, biota, and various biological factors change on differing scales, allowing insight into the relative contributions of the different factors on ecological outcomes.

              Book Description

With 'My Life among the Deathworks: Illustrations of the Aesthetics of Authority,' the renowned cultural theorist and Freud scholar Philip Rieff inaugurates a trilogy that signals the summation of his scholarly lifework. With this series, 'Sacred Order/Social Order,' to be published in consecutive volumes, Rieff both continues and supersedes the lines of thought that characterize the earlier, influential works upon which his reputation was forged. Readers familiar with Rieff's distinctive oeuvre will recognize central themes and find final recitations on the cultural impact of Freud and his creation "psychological man" or "the therapeutic," which Rieff here renames the "new man." Whether conversant with Rieff's work or new to its unique interpretive power, readers of 'Sacred Order/Social Order' will discover a series of provocative insights, illuminated by Rieff's wide-ranging expositions, theoretical advances, and stylistic innovations.

In this first volume, Rieff articulates a comprehensive, typological theory of Western culture. Using visual illustrations and unique juxtapositions, he displays remarkable erudition in drawing from such disciplines as sociology, history, literature, poetry, music, plastic arts, and film; he contrasts the changing modes of spiritual and social thought that have struggled for dominance throughout Western history. Our modern culture--to Rieff's mind only the "third" type in western history--is the object of his deepest scrutiny, described here as morally ruinous, death-affirming rather than life-affirming, and representing an unprecedented attempt to create a culture completely devoid of any concept of the sacred.

For Rieff, culture represents the "form of fighting before the firing begins" in a literal life-and-death struggle for a particular type of world-creation. Having concluded in this final phase of his career that there is no neutral ground in this struggle, Rieff takes aim at many of the most significant "deathworks" in modern literature, art, and history--from Joyce's 'Finnegans Wake' and Duchamp's Etant donnés to Hitler's death camps--in an attempt to undo them by using them against themselves. In so doing, he seeks to show the reader what really animates, and is ultimately at stake, in the contemporary "culture wars" raging over such issues as euthanasia, education, medical research, sexuality, race, class, and gender.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A Great Literary Achievement.......2006-05-03

This is one of the best books I've read in over 40 years of being a Common Reader. My enthusiasm for it doubtless colors my review, but even with my cheerleading, there still must be a lot of there, there.

If you have not read widely and thought a lot about that reading, you probably will not enjoy or appreciate this book. And, chances are, that if you are a widely read person, you still probably wouldn't like this book. Philip Rieff draws upon a lifetime of reading and reflection from sources as diverse as the Bible, Freud, Nietzsche, Joyce, postmodernists, and images from art (Michaelangelo to Duchamp) and film (Kind Hearts and Coronets to Zelig) and develops three cultures (fate, faith, and fiction) as means of understanding life and text. As someone who lived through the postmodern temper tantrum at the university, I am amazed at Rieff's accomplishment. His work takes the wild, destructive postmodern methods and puts them in a small bottle for anyone's consideration.

I further suspect that you would like this book the stronger your faith in God. And that is a very weird outcome for a literary approach. Thomas Aquinas would probably like this book. So would Plato. Derrida, Foucault, and the postmoderns would not. Let me put this another way. Rieff's approach allows a well educated reader to also be faithful to God. Postmoderns think that this is impossible.

At the end: God was never dead.

Philip Rieff is amazing and this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Philip Rieff, Zombie Slayer.......2006-02-04

America's lowest-profile sociological genius reestablishes himself as the critical critic today against the unraveling of social order. That order, Rieff shows, is coming apart because it is being picked apart hungrily by academic and art elites -- who have turned against not simply "our" culture but against culture itself.

My Life among the Deathworks is striking in its accessibility. This is not "easy" reading -- then again, no one visiting this page is on the hunt for that -- but it is Rieff with pictures. His incursions, made as they are against mounted attacks on culture (the titular "Deathworks"), feature the images of the Deathworks themselves. Rieff is more humane and introspective than ever, in the service of an ontology that takes the lead in Rieff's taking of sides. Gone are the days of Rieff's academic reticence to dirty his hands with the fleeting passions of culture. Those fleeting passions are now the battlefield upon which the fleetingness of culture itself is being determined.

Perhaps the central Deathwork in Rieff's analysis is Marcel Duchamp's "Being Given," which depicts a decayed female body lifting a lighted lamp. Rather than spoiling the depth and power of the analysis, suffice it to say that Rieff declares against the zombification of society: a culture of death as violent as it is erotic. My Life among the Deathworks is the first salvo of a three-volume series. The next takes aim at the knights of the living dead themselves -- those Rieff calls "the officer class" of the anti-culture.

As for the present volume, it is the most important book written by the most important sociologist writing -- because it reaches to the heart of the central cultural issue of our time. Rieff has written for any reader with patience and literacy -- and a deep disquiet over the rot that can often be sensed creeping over the world. Rieff is not anti-art or anti-artist. His is not a reactionary philosophy. He has no use for the old church civilization, which he pronounces exhausted. But by the same token, Rieff declares himself an honorary Christian, and hews as close as one reasonably can today to the 10 Commandments. His work is, in essence, a discursus on Commandment 2.

What Rieff is for is God -- permanent authority that is fixed but not fossilized -- and the social order he terms in his system of lowercase acronyms "via" (vertical in authority). What his enemies are for is an obliteration of that vertical, and its replacement with an amoebic horizontal of social flesh -- rather than God, one could say, "god" (games on demand).

Anyone inclined toward the preservation of wisdom and order across generations and repulsed by the new pop cult of trans-hood ought scroll back up and order this book at once. Anyone uncertain about what is happening to the progress of western civilization should do the same. Rieff's latest is probably the best entry-point into his whole literature, and beyond that is a vital tool for feeling intellects everywhere.

                Book Description

Philip Rieff earned recognition as one of the most profound social theorists of culture and authority of the twentieth century. Through such works as Freud: The Mind of the Moralist and The Triumph of the Therapeutic, he proved himself an incisive interpreter of Freud and his legacy. His work now culminates with the long-awaited trilogy, Sacred Order/Social Order, a three-volume work on social theory and contemporary culture.

In Volume 2, The Crisis of the Officer Class: The Death of the Tragic Sensibility, Phillip Rieff continues his assault against the deathworks of our modern age. Invoking his theory developed in Volume 1, he develops his critique of our current culture as distinguishable only by its rejection of any and all visions of sacred order.

                    4 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title.......2007-07-14

If you've just been hit with the revelation of your husband's "secret life", this book may not help. The title is deceptive because it implies that you will be healed after reading it.(Healing is God's job!) I was frustrated with the first few chapters, because it dealt with man's sexuality rather than the wife's torment. My raw agony was nowhere to be found within the pages of this book. However, this book was still useful. Overall, the book was all right.

There were nuggets of practical advice and hope. I liked the way views from both wives and husbands were presented. The most important thing I learned was that it is possible for a husband to love his wife and still sin against her. I don't understand it or like it, but I believe it and this book does a good job of introducing that concept. I also learned a lot about the importance of a Christian wife's role of encouraging her husband spiritually. I liked Fred's description about how Brenda influenced him by lovingly refusing to accept anything less than righteousness from him. I also liked Brenda's attitude that her destiny is forever entwined with Fred's and that when one sins it pollutes the stream for both of them.

If you are in deep pain right now, understand that healing will take lots of time and lots of God. This book won't fix you or your marriage, but it can give you some insight and encouragement. For biblical healing, I strongly recommend "Lord Heal My Hurts" by Kay Arthur.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-06-29

I'm half-way through it. So far, it is a really great book w/ super insight. I highly recommend it. Best description for this book would be "lifechanging".

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT BOOK! .......2007-02-23

This is an outstanding book. This addresses a very real problem and does it in terms we can all understand. It is an easy read and includes enough actual stories from actual people to cross the bounds of "it could never happen to us" Thanks Fred and Brenda!

4 out of 5 stars You are NOT alone!.......2006-09-02

This book has helped me realize that I am not alone and that it is completely NORMAL to have these types of feelings.
Women share their personal stories and feelings in this book. Wisdom is handed out to help you make your own decisions.
One word of caution...personally, it kind of fueled my fire in a way...not sure how to describe it, but it almost gave me more bullets against my husband.
It's not a feel good read by any means, but it is a should read.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and helpful steps to restoration.......2006-08-27

Understanding why your spouse was stupid enough to become entangled in the porno web is one thing; forgiving him and restoring your relationship is quite another. This book lays it all bare and gives practical counsel that, if followed, will help a woman wanting to accomplish that end.

Some reviewers of this book expressed disappointment with the focus on pornography and masterbation, but I bought it anyway. Adultery begins in the mind. With easy access to internet pornography, thoughts are turned into images. Sexual obsessions have mental, spiritual, and emotional ramifications. Each has to be acknowledged and addressed. This means going back to where it begins. Cut off a weed at its roots and it will die. This is a good book for women who are truly ready to forgive.
