5 out of 5 stars This works for Americans too!.......2007-01-16

Although you might be able to find some of this info on the internet, it would take years. The guy who wrote the last review missed the mark. While the roots of this book are Canadian, I found that more than three quarters of its 1,600 pages are applicable to Americans and well worth the investment when compared to what else is available in the US.

For example The BIG Guide has the largest available list profiling US NGOs (with more than 400) and more than 300 US private sector firms which regularly hire for international positions. These organizations are indexed in the book and their carefully written profiles are located on the CD-ROM.

...another gem of The BIG Guide is its professional career building advice, offering un-paralleled expertise when compared with other US publications, ---my favourite chapters are on international job hunting (international resumes etc) and the skills about living overseas --- forty one chapters in all. No publication does international careers better than this guide.

I used an earlier version of this guide and I have recommended it to many people over the years and they all have been thrilled.

3 out of 5 stars Good....if you're Canadian.......2006-12-09

This book has a lot of information but I've pretty much seen everything in here just by searching online.

AND the sucky part about this book is that it's geared for Canadians. Tons of the organizations are Canadian organizations that only recruit Canadians.

SO, this book is OK but you can basically just search the internet for international jobs and NGOs to find the info you want. Nothing innovative really.

I'm using it as a bookend now.

4 out of 5 stars Full of references for young people.......2006-08-23

Good book, a lot of references, but mainly for young people just out from college.

5 out of 5 stars Career booster.......2006-03-23

The BIG Guide is targeted specifically to college students who want to start building international experience while in school and who have the long term goal of finding a professional international job. The book starts with the premises that you need to gain international experience first by volunteering, interning, studying, and/or traveling abroad. While expensive, this book is most likely the world's best international career guide with detailed chapters on how to write an international resume, conduct interviews, sell your international skills, ...plus it contains a massive number of annotated resources and descriptions of all types of organizations hiring internationally ...no other book covers
these topics as well as this one.

    Book Description

In this brilliant reimagining of the business-fable genre, bestselling author Charles Decker presents immediately engaging characters undergoing the throes of organizational change.

Going through a company merger or buy-out creates new challenges for managers and employees alike, but this unique business fable offers real-world advice for coping and even prospering. Based on the true story of a candle-making company in New England, Lessons from the Hive is actually a fictionalized look inside an organization, Bee Natural, Inc., as it deals with inevitable changes after its purchase by a consumer-products conglomerate.

Using a week-in-the-life approach, five major players in the organization are profiled, ranging from the recently installed tough CEO to a brand-new junior employee. The main character is a seasoned director of marketing who must face her own personal struggles with changes both at work and at home. Fast paced and entertaining, Decker's story parable is populated with likable, realistic characters who portray the tribulations and eventual success of a company enduring organizational change. Readers will learn:

    * More positive ways of looking at changes within an organization.

    * Less confrontational ways of dealing with conflicts at work.

    * How to deal with fears of the unknown in a changing business environment.

    * The importance of establishing trust in the workplace.

    * How to deal with conflicting interpersonal relationships in a professional manner.

Well experienced in organizational development, training, and human resources management through his extensive business publishing background, Decker uses this business fable to demonstrate that trust is a stronger force than fear and that organizational change can actually result in career opportunities rather than career demise.

Anyone involved in dealing with personal and professional transformation (and who isn't?) will find comfort in this delightful tale of a company dealing with the challenge of reinventing itself.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Getting" Organization Change.......2006-11-09

Decker's story is novel quality, for the characters become very real, making the issues and principles of effective organization change truly understandable. Any organization about to launch a significant change should distribute this book widely!

4 out of 5 stars Great Conflict Resolution Lessons.......2005-12-05

In particular, the lessons you can learn about identifying and resolving conflicts are absolutely priceless. This and Corporate Canaries are MUST buys if you are a manager in any sort of capacity!

5 out of 5 stars The story is everything.......2005-11-25

For books like this to work, they have to have both an engaging storyline and real-world characters. This book has both, and I found myself re-learning a lot about dealing with change, managing difficult people, and understanding how different types of people have different styles of working. The group discussion questions in the back are particularly useful. I will probably suggest that my whole department get copies and read it together. There are some on my team who need a little coaching, and this is a very non-threatening way to deal with difficult issues. Great job!

5 out of 5 stars Lessons from the Hive.......2005-06-07

Charles Decker is vice president of an electronic publishing company, does work with business publishing initiatives, and has coauthored Beans: Four Principles for Running a Business in Good Times or Bad. Lessons from the Hive is about a fictionalized organization that is reinventing itself and was created to teach positive ways of viewing changes in an organization, how to deal with fears of the unknown, the importance of trust, and how to deal with conflicting interpersonal relationships. It is of the business-fable genre that uses a week-in the-life approach for five players in an organization including a recently installed CEO, a newly hired employee, and a seasoned director of marketing with personal struggles at home and at work. The junior change agent uses mantras many people call clichés such as Happiness is a choice; Inspire yourself, others will follow; Vanity is not a team sport; Enthusiasm will take you 90 percent of the way; and Change your thinking, change your life. This book can be used in classrooms and in businesses. Many people learn better by stories and examples than by other methods. This is a brief but powerful message. There are questions at the back of the book to assist reflection about each chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another business book.......2005-02-25

If you think you have read every single business book that you need to read, reconsider this one. I heard the author speak at an event in Newark recently and was impressed with his assessment of the difficulties associated with people with undiagnosed depression. The characters are so three dimensional that you'll think you know most of them. This is like a "Desperate Housewives" in cubicle-land, and it totally works.

My own boss is a little like the damaged main character, and I put this book on her desk anonymously. I saw her carrying it around for a few days and then at our department meeting last Monday she told people we should all read it because it had some excellent advice. I really thought she was too far gone but this book seems to have changed her. I hope it's for good.

Even if not, the book is a fun read that I think just about anybody will get a kick out of.

    Book Description

Most conventional gardening books concentrate on how and when to carry out horticultural tasks such as pruning, seed sowing and taking cuttings. This book is unique in explaining in straightforward terms some of the science that underlies these practices. It is principally a book of 'Why' - Why are plants green? Why should one cut beneath a leaf node when taking cuttings? Why do plants need so much water? But it also goes on to deal with the 'How', providing rationale behind the practical advice. The coverage is wide-ranging and comprehensive and includes the basic structure and functioning of garden plants, nomenclature, genetics and plant breeding, environmental factors affecting growth, methods of propagation and production, pest and disease control, and post harvest management and storage. Published on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society, this book will be a most valuable text for those sitting the RHS general examination, and horticultural students at certificate and diploma levels; it will also appeal to gardeners, growers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars How science can directly affect one's garden.......2002-10-07

Collaboratively compiled and edited by David S. Ingram (Master, St. Catherine's College, University of Cambridge, UK), Daphne Vince-Prue (Retired Lecturer, University of Reading and the first to develop the potted Chrysanthemum), and Peter J. Gregory (University of Reading), Science And The Garden: The Scientific Basis Of Horticultural Practice is an advanced resource of chemical, biological, and highly practical information about how science can directly affect one's garden. Individual chapters deal with the full range of relative issues including soil fertility, taxonomy, seasons and weather, the scientific repercussions of gardening in a greenhouse environment, and more. Familiarity with basic chemistry and other branches of agriculture-related science is very helpful, but not absolutely required for the non-specialist general reader to get the most out of Science And The Garden, one of the most educational and informative introductions to horticultural practices available today.

          4 out of 5 stars GOOD REVIEW.......2007-06-11

VERY INTERESTING BOOK. I HAVE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THE ART OF TANNING HIDES.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book even for beginners.......2006-12-07

I started using this book back in the late 80's when I first started tanning. Almost everything I know about tanning, I learned from this book. I've tanned elk hides, deer hides, antelope, squirrel, rabbit, snake, coyote, fox, raccoon, skunk, beaver, muskrat, and many more. I've had some failures, but with this book as a guide, I've taken very few false steps. I've used a wide variety of techniques and found that they worked like Mr. Churchill said. I do recommend this book, and have often lent my copy to friends.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money.......2005-12-06

I was very disappointed with this book. He talks about the generalized steps to do tanning, but he lacks good step by step information for beginners. Its a good first book to read, then find another book with more detail as to how to actually do the procedures. He only has two plans for crafting with leather, and I think he should have added more. I wouldn't advise you purchase this book unless its your first and you want to understand the general procedure of tanning, then find a better book with more details.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Tanning Skns and Furs.......2001-06-08

This book is extremely useful to anyone entering the field of home tanning. It has a proven method for tanning any skin that is likely to be available to the home tanner, from alligators to antelope.

3 out of 5 stars Covers a Lot of Ground, Decently.......2000-11-22

Churchill covers the tanning of many different types of animals, using many different methods. This is the good and the bad of this book. No other tanning book I know of contains so much varied information, and for this reason its a good one to have. However, the techniques are not covered in much detail so it is challenging for the beginning tanner to be successful using these instructions alone.

In reference to the previous reviews written here. I agree with the first two (look like they are written by the same guy?), in that if you are wanting to tan buckskin, this isn't the best book. However if you are wanting to do furs, the books mentioned below don't cover them (I'm the author of one of them)...and this is your best bet.

            Book Description

The third level of a three-book series, Great Essays introduces students to the process of writing and teaches them to use logic for creating, organizing, and supporting their ideas. Students become familiar with process, development, and revision through relevant practice, while learning reading and writing skills and grammar and language usage. Twenty-five sample essays provide a range of rhetorical styles, examples of essay organization and cohesion, as well as a starting point for comprehension questions and discussion.

Each model essay includes brief pre- and post-reading questions that focus on features such as structure and rhetorical patterns. Sentence-level work helps students understand different lengths and types of construction and gives them practice combining shorter sentences into longer, cohesive ones. In addition, Language Focus sections help students learn to make accurate word choices and use writing devices such as transitional words and modals. At the end of every unit, students practice rhetorical modes with Original Writing assignments on a variety of topics.

This is still very well done, it is a pity they have taken it from the Max line to dumb it down and make it more kid friendly.

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-04-12

This is to DC's JLA what "BATTLE HYMN: Farewell to the Golden Age" was to Marvel's Avengers. Excellent writing...I mean EXCELLENT, and great art to boot. Puts characters we all know in a more realistic and contemporary light. One of the best comics I've read in a while. Up there with Transmetropolitan, Planetary(Spoof on FF), and POWERS.

The first three Volumes are worth buying, the sidetracking stories(SP: Hyperion, SP: Dr. Spectrum, SP: Nighthawk) aren't as good, but worth a read. Though the Nighthawk book WAS pretty good, with a unique doppelganger of the Joker.

5 out of 5 stars A very well done revamp.......2007-01-22

This is the second volume of the Marvel MAX series Supreme Power, collecting issues 7-12. After issue 12 Marvel removed the MAX label, which didn't alter the content very much, except for the occasional nude shot.
Straczynski obviously thought out this revamp of the old marvel Squadron Supreme very carefully. Volume One (Contact) tells the origins of Hyperion, Nighthawk, Blur, (His original name was Whizzer)and Dr. Spectrum. It also features cameos by Power Princess and Amphibian that would probably be confusing if you didn't pick up this volume, which involves them more as the story progresses.
The action definitely picks up with Volume 2, and I love Gary Frank's pencils. His art makes the fight scenes incredible. I can't believe he isn't more well-known. The whole story (vol 1 and 2)reads like a well written novel, with Straczynski pacing everything perfectly. By the time Hyperion cuts loose, it's a sledgehammer of action that hits you right in the gut, thanks to the MAX banner and Frank's ultra detailed art.
I recommend this volume to any comic fan, but it's a little better if you have already read CONTACT. Excellent art, very well done plot, Great read.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Bloody, and Brilliant.......2005-12-22

Absolutely horrifying and engaging at the same time, Supereme Power: Powers and Principalities reprints Supreme Power #7-12. Hyperion, growing disenchanted with his life as a government puppet, begins to seek answers as to who he is and what his origins are. However, the more he learns, the less he knows about himself.

Meanwhile, the connections between the rest of the super powered beings begin to strengthen and weave together, but what the consequences of those meetings and connections will be could be disastrous to the entire world, especially with the emergence of the Princess, who provides an alternate origin for both she and Hyperion. There is also the background story of a mysterious, horrific serial killer, and greater insight into the deeply disturbed mind of Nighthawk.

The storyline is brilliant and horrifying. The art is beautiful and haunting. Over all, this would make a delicious addition to anyone's graphic novel collection. It could also be enjoyed without readying Superme Power Contract, though reading Contact first might clear up some questions that would otherwise develop.

This is meant for mature readers, and is in no way suitable for younger readers. However, for the rest of us, I highly recommend this book for the rest of us.

P.S. If you like this series and you haven't read Watchmen yet by Moore and Gibbons then what are you waiting for? Watchmen is way better than Supreme Power but is the same type of story.

5 out of 5 stars The saga continues.......2004-12-11

Babylon 5 creator and Amazing Spider-Man scribe J. Michael Straczynski continues his brilliant and mature look at Squadren Supreme characters in this second collected edition of Supreme Power. Government pawn super-human Mark Milton, AKA Hyperion, has learned the truth behind his origin and to say he isn't happy is saying it lightly. After a cataclysmic battle with Joe "Doc Spectrum" Ledger, Hyperion is a man on a mission against the people who have manipulated him all his life, only the government has their own plans on how to deal with him themselves. In the end, Hyperion's salvation lies in a powerful, beautiful, and very naked, woman named Zarda who may hold the key as to just why Hyperion is here, and what he is destined to do. Culminating with Nighthawk and the Blur on the trail of a super powered serial killer, all the main players appear ready for the next stage as questions are answered, but even more become raised. Straczynski's story gets better and better and more complex with each passing page, illustrated by Gary Frank's superb pencils which gives the book a definitive look. All in all, Powers & Principalities continues one of the most impressive stories in the mainstream comic world available today. Pick up the first volume Contact and then pick this up, it's brilliant.
