Japan and the four little dragons--Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore--constitute less than 1 percent of the world's land mass and less than 4 percent of the world's population. Yet in the last four decades they have become, with Europe and North America, one of the three great pillars of the modern industrial world order. How did they achieve such a rapid industrial transformation? Why did the four little dragons, dots on the East Asian periphery, gain such Promethean energy at this particular time in history?
Ezra F. Vogel, one of the most widely read scholars on Asian affairs, provides a comprehensive explanation of East Asia's industrial breakthrough. While others have attributed this success to tradition or to national economic policy, Vogel's penetrating analysis illuminates how cultural background interacted with politics, strategy, and situational factors to ignite the greatest burst of sustained economic growth the world has yet seen.
Vogel describes how each of the four little dragons acquired the political stability needed to take advantage of the special opportunities available to would-be industrializers after World War II. He traces how each little dragon devised a structure and a strategy to hasten industrialization and how firms acquired the entrepreneurial skill, capital, and technology to produce internationally competitive goods. Vogel brings masterly insight to the underlying question of why Japan and the little dragons have been so extraordinarily successful in industrializing while other developing countries have not. No other work has pinpointed with such clarity how institutions and cultural practices rooted in the Confucian tradition were adapted to the needs of an industrial society, enabling East Asia to use its special situational advantages to respond to global opportunities.
This is a book that all scholars and lay readers with an interest in Asia will want to read and ponder.

Case studies of the post-war economic development of South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. A concise and scholarly work. Though all "Asian," these countries differ, yet each have done well economically.Why so? Vogel offers an answer. I'm writing this, 26 March 1999. East Asia is experiencing extreme economic difficulties, but this does not undo what has occurred nor remove the possibility for future development. If you're doing business in East Asia, Four Little Dragons will provide you with a quick read-in to four major players.

I had to buy this book for my cross-cultural management class. It is a pretty good textbook - the author gets right to the point without making it too wordy, which is always important for a textbook!

I thought the Rosarium essay in particular was very clearly written and much easier to understand than reading from Jung's exposition. I'm quickly becoming an Edinger fan.

History abounds with groups who sought to wrap themselves in secrecy and stealth. In the Dark Ages of Northern Europe `wolfshirt warriors' (Ulfhednar) the stealth oriented companions to the dread Berserkers; the Knights Templars, an order so secret that their history is still debated; the Cult of Assassins (Hashishin); and of course Japan's elusive Ninja all practiced the `Art of Invisibility'. The Japanese Ninja became so adept at collecting and perfecting methods of stealth movement and fighting that theirs became a martial art unto itself.
In Ninja Shadowhand; The Art of Invisibility, Dr. Haha Lung and Christopher Prowant explain the basics of seeing. We learn how our eyes work, and gain an understanding of how shape, silhouette, movement, and color effect what we see and what we don't see. We also learn about point of view, obscuring a foe's perspective, and psychological blind spots.
After explaining how we see the authors show us how we may apply this knowledge in martial arts applications. This is explained through the basic application of ukemi, misdirecting attention and disguising movement.
Ninja Shadowhand then mentions `shadow weapons' such as the yawara (short stick), manriki (10,000 power chain), shuriken (throwing star), and application of modern hidden weapons such as the handkerchief, lapel weapons, and walking sticks.

Can You See Me Now?.......2005-10-16
An excellent overview of Shinobi Ninja shadowhand (taisavaki-jutsu) techniques, this book has great practical application for any who study the martial arts. It was recommended by a friend in the military as a way to hone and enhance both defensive and offensive skills. The methods of invisibility discussed and detailed in a very "how to" manner work extremely well and can be rapidly learned. Moves are explained by narration, schematics, and body drawings.
It appears that some of the other amazon reviewers are looking for either an historical review of Ninja tactic, or a cartoon parody. This book is neither. Rather, it is for those who seek a primer for invisibility, disguising or misdirecting attention, and shadowhand striking styles. "Avoid being seen... Seen, avoid capture... Captured, avoid being held.".
Waste Of Time.......2005-09-17
After reading this book I personally think that the term "shadowhand" refers to Dr(?) Haha Lung's ability to write a 150 page book without telling you a single thing. If there is anything of any usefulness that you will find in this book you will also find it in any women's self defense magazine sans the ridiculous illustrations.

ahh, yes... the 80's ninja craze! now there's something worth jotting down amongst all of the real ninjitsu history. (whatever the 80's craze was). I think someone was expecting to literally become invisible? and like he/she said "i was expecting to see a teenage mutant ninja turtle cartoon..." yea, you'd have to buy a teenage mutant ninja turtle video for that little buddy... no wonder you were dissapointed.

I give it five stars because it gives you some good history and manipulation methods. The person who wrote the review before me was obviously a complete idiot. He gave it one star, he must have no appeciation for the great techniques in martial arts. Buy this book if you are interested in self-defense!!! Its only ten bucks !!

I like that the native speakers are reading material on CDs. I can catch the pronunciation of french words. I do not like that some of the word pronounced on CD can not be found in the book that accompany the disks.
Speak Slowly Please.......2006-08-08
The first section of this course was fantastic -- they pronounced each French phrase very slowly, had you repeat each syllable, and then sped it up to full speed. However, after the first few lessons the slow, careful pronunciation ceased, and the French came flying at me too quickly to hear clearly. This is supposed to be an audio-based course, so the book is not very inclusive and offered little help in deciphering the speakers. I'm very dissapointed.

The book is carefully, beautifully designed, it really shines in your bookshelf. Nevertheless, i found it to be lacking more thoughts, ideas - something to fill the void, to make the images meaningful. It fails to inspire, to make you ask questions, to expose the deeper structures and ideas behind the artwork. That's a big "sin" so to say, since maeda is well known for having interesting things to say.
Without real text i think it's just a beautiful book, no more and no less than that. Great for snobs, or for having in your living room...
powerfull secret message.......2006-11-19
I read 7 times in a row this book to analyse it in depth. It is fun and very exciting to read as you go through dozen of highly interesting projects. My analysis of this book brought me to the conclusion that it also contains a vision, a powerfull secret message. It convinced me we are builders of a new era, a "renaissance" of human knowledge and activities with computational technologies.
Within a friendly package, i got intimately convinced by the faithfull project of John Maeda, and I'm now driving my research having in mind the many accessible yet visionary projects i have seen in this book. I'm applying to MIT Media Lab and i want to change the world, with my vision.
New Masters of Maeda.......2004-10-23
Maeda is a certifiable genius, but his books have gone downhill since his first, "Design by Numbers." That book is an exceptional introduction to computational design, original, and elegant. His next, "Maeda at Media" took many hundreds of pages to sum up Maeda's years a the MIT Media Lab. It was something of an egotistical embarrassment. Maeda, then just in his mid-thirties, included pretty much every experiement and project he'd done to date. Even geniuses need editors.
Now, in "Creative Code" we get a book not really different from the "New Masters of Flash" series that's now in (I think) its third edition. CC is a collection of case studies of work by some very smart people, and some essays about digital media, working methods, and so on. Much of it is great work and pretty. It's rendered pretty lifeless in a printed book, of course, so you'll want to track down this work online to actually check it out.
How valuable will this be to you? Do you need another heavy, sexy design book? If you're really interested in this kind of work, you'll certainly already know about all of these designers, and probably about most of the peices included here. You've probably also read the designers' own blogs or web sites, so you'll know about their methods and interests in much more detail than you get here. (The description's statement that "little of this research has been seen outside the laboratory" is not true.) In that case, you get a book of pretty pictures that probably will sit on your shelf more than on your lap. If you're looking for code samples or detailed technical explanations, you'll be better off looking elsewhere.
It's kind of a shame in the end. He's so talented, I want to see Maeda doing less surveying of the state of interaction design and more genuinely innovative and interesting things. In fact, I'll tell you what's needed: to finish the project he started in DBN, which is to really explain the concept of "coding elegance" (and the creativity behind it). There's a lot in all three books about the aesthetic appeal of well-written computer code, but there's not much about what specifically makes one algorithm more beautiful than another. This algorithmic elegance is really central to Maeda's work; he says that digital designers should appreciate both the coding and the visual/interactive design natures of the medium. The people represented in this book are the ones who'll be able to do that, but it hasn't happened yet.
