Well intended, but ultimately uninspiring........2005-02-11
I ended up returning this one to the bookstore after trying to push through the first few chapters...I've had easier marathons.
Most of the quotes in here are long winded personal accounts that don't provide the pithy punch and true quotability I was looking for from the title.
Spark the Runner in Your Life.......2002-12-05
"The Quotable Runner: Great Moments of Wisdom, Inspiration, Wrongheadedness, and Humor" is a gift book, but for the runner, it is a fun gift.
Runners aren't known for effusive Knute Rockne sorts of locker room speeches, or Yogi Berra witticisms, but, as seen here, they should be.
Quoted here are great runners and writers about running, from Shakespeare to high school mile record holder, Alan Webb.
Read what Lasse Viren, Emil Zatopek, Bill Bowerman, and Steve Prefontaine all had to say.
Readers of "Runner's World" may know many of these names, but there are some unexpected voices. Oprah Winfrey is there more than once, including, "I'm never going to run another marathon."
There's honesty. Distance star Rob de Castella on marathoning, "If you feel bad after 10 miles, you're in trouble. If you feel bad at 20 miles, you're normal. If you don't feel bad at 26 miles, you're abnormal."
There's wit. Don Kardong frankly said about registering a race with hills, "You entered a marathon with hills? You idiot."
Then there is the curious odd quotes. Finland's great Olympic marathoner, Lasse Viren enthusiastically revealed his secret to racing success, "Reindeer milk!" Whatever might be dubious about Viren's claim is difficult to argue. Viren won four gold medals.
A treat at the end is a few lines on each person quoted, a sort of mini-bio. I enjoyed learning the new names, and accomplishments of those quoted.
I fully recommend, "The Quotable Runner." It'll put a spark in your day as you head out on the lonely road on runners know.

A must have book for runners.......2002-10-04
This book was given to me by a training partner a few days before my first marathon. Just flipping through the book, I found quote after quote that I connected with. Others gave me great inspiration. They were so good, I decided to read the book from cover to cover and couldn't put the book down. I love Mark's comentary on each subject "Training", "Coaches", "Fear", "Pain", "The Marathon". I want to stock up on this book so I can give it as gifts to my running friends!

I just finished this book and it has been such an inspiration!! It is boiling over with insight and wisdom about what we all feel as runners. It touches the human spirit in the struggles and triumphs related to the experience of running and everyday life. Each chapter is filled with quotes from famous runners about such subjects as: The Starting Line, Coaches, Training, Fear, Racing, Hills, The Marathon, The Mile, Mind Over Matter, Pain, The Olympics, The Finish Line, Victories and Defeats. This book really captures the SOUL of running!

If your a runner...and even if you're not this book will inspire you to do things that you never thought possible. It will help you make goals...and then gradually surpass them. This book describes running as more than just a sport, but a way of life. Thumbs up to Mark Will-Weber on putting together a book that defines the greatest past-time in the world.

Great visual dictionary, but some words for students missing..........2007-08-27
This dictionary appears to be a minature, softcover, two-language version of the Five Language Visual Dictionary sold by DK (Five Language Visual Dictionary). This book is small enough to be called a pocket visual dictionary and has an exceptional variety of clear, well-organized, indexed images.
While some categories, like the human anatomy section, provide detailed vocabulary well beyond my needs, other sections are wanting of some basic classroom vocabulary. Words like binder and binder paper are not included, but I have yet to find another visual dictionary that includes them. It is still a great dictionary, and I recommend it to my Spanish I students as a means of linking Spanish vocabulary directly to images rather than always translating to English.
Excellent Vocabulary Reference.......2007-08-13
Really good visual dictionaries are hard to find. This publication is an excellent addition to any Spanish student's library. I teach middle school Spanish, and have decided to use this book as an extension to our texts for building vocabulary. The fact that it references the words by category and picture makes the book very user friendly. It also makes for great browsing and gives the user access to words not commonly used (and many not known even by native speakers.) It also makes a fantastic tool for Spanish speaking students who are learning English. A great and affordable gift!
Spanish English Bilingual Visual Dictionary(DK Visual Dictionaries).......2007-01-10
Excellent book for quick reference with pictures on specific item name or product in selected language, most items listed in everyday use. Also compacted enough to be carried around if necessary. Highly recommend for use as assistant in studing a second language.
Highly Visual Dictionary.......2006-05-28
The Spanish English Visual Bilingual Dictionary is filled with colorful images of all the items listed with English and Spanish words. I find it is much easier to remember the words when presented with pictures. At times so many of the Spanish words are similar to the English (telefono/telephone or la nectarine/nectarine) so it makes it even easier to remember along with the pictures.
The areas covered include: people, appearance, home, services, shopping, food, study, work, transport, sports and environment.
Very helpful dictionary when you are learning a language or to look up specific
words. There is a Spanish and English index to simplify searching for words.

Excellent dictionary but a note of advice!!!!.......2006-01-23
This book, as the other reviewer mentioned, is a great source for anyone who wants to learn the language or wants to learn new vocabulary. Like i mention in my review for the French Dictionary, it covers topics rarely covered by other dictionaries like people, appearance, health, services, home, shopping, food, studies, transportation, sports, leisure, environment, etc.
It goes to such specific words as the different parts of a computer or camera, or as the different players (positions) in a football game or members of a rock band.
Excellent source, but a very important note: Spanish is a very complex language, and althouhg it is spoken in many countries, the dialects and words for specific items may change. For example, the word for cake in Puerto Rico is a bad word in Mexico and is not the same in Spain...The Spanish words presented in this dictionary correspond mostly to the spanish spoken in Spain, but fear not! Most words presented are universal and mean the same in any Hispanic country.

Great with one major flaw: ambiguous gender.......2007-07-31
While I enjoy the real live pictures used to illustrate the vocabulary, I am frustrated by the fact that they use the indefinite pronoun to identify gender. For many words, this is not a problem, but for some words, the indefinite pronouns in French and Italian are ambiguous.
For example: garlic - l'ail - der Knoblauch - el ajo - l'aglio
Are "l'ail" and "l'aglio" masculine or feminine? No respectable dictionary should ever leave the gender of a word ambiguous. I hope that they correct this problem in future editions. Until then, I prefer the Firefly Five Language Dictionary, which tastefully adds a gender flag as a superscript after each word:

Just a fun book.......2006-03-25
I give it 5 stars because it does an excellent job of presenting the top 5 European languages in an easily comparable way. It will NOT teach you a language. But it's intriguing to see word similarities. I've studied all 5 languages (and am currently studying German full-time). I can't say whether folks who have no background in any more than one of the languages would find the book as much fun as I do. But as soon as I saw it I wanted a copy. Too bad it's out of print, although Amazon still has copies available (3-6 weeks' wait).
Pictures worth a thousand words.......2004-12-15
I found this book most helpful in tutoring adult ESL. When tutoring one might have a Spanish speaker one hour and a student from Vietnam or Ivory Coast who may have some second language knowledge of French the next hour. Importantly, the pictures are engaging, clear and interesting. Now, I miss this book because it passed the ultimate test: it was stolen from the tutoring center.

This visual dictionary has more than 1,600 colourful images and its 400 pages are divided into 19 chapters as follows: About the dictionary, How to use this book, People, Appearance, Health, Home, Services, Shopping, Food, Eating out, Study, Work, Transport, Sports, Leisure, Environment, Reference, Index and Acknowledgments.
For each picture you get its meaning in five languages, and for each word you have its definite article showing the gender. Very interesting is the presence of pictures showing actions, so that you get the verbs as well as some useful phrases. At the end of the "Reference" section you have "particles and antonyms" and "useful phrases" - essential phrases, greetings, signs, help, directions, accommodation, eating and drinking. The index is divided into five parts, one for each language, and the names have their gender shown by means of the letters m, n, f .
I particularly enjoy playing with this book by showing a picture and letting my friends guess its meaning in the foreign languages they have studied, and think it's a useful tool for teachers, students or professionals, for the topics are covered in detail. Last but not least, the dictionary is published by DK, i.e. it's a Dorling Kindersley Book, a Penguin Company.
not a pedagogical tool.......2003-10-28
Although, in theory, one might consider books such as this helpful in achieving fluency in five languages simultaneously, this is false. Anyone who speaks more than two languages knows that we store each language in its own special place in our brain, and that location is determined by similarity to other languages also located in our brain. So, when learning Swedish, all of my errors were in German. Never did I mistakenly select a French word while attempting to speak Swedish. Similarly, when learning Italian, never did I reach for a German word by accident. My mistakes were nearly always in Spanish (occasionally in French). The best example of all may be Japanese, for which there was no transfer effect whatsoever. Every mistake I make in Japanese is just bad Japanese, not a word from one of my other languages.
The point is: due to the compartmentalization of languages, this type of book does not facilitate language learning. While I am a big advocate of simultaneous translation, this book, unlike dual language literary texts, offers only individual words, not phrases, for the many colorful entries presented.
I will say that the book is filled with photographs, and this is its true virtue. You may have been wondering how to describe a particular food item in German, Spanish, Italian and French. If so, you may be able to find out the answer to your question here. The sections are thematically arranged, so you can turn quickly to your area of interest, say, auto care, to find out all of the vocabulary that you are looking for. But, of course, a person only needs car part vocabulary when dealing with a broken car, which can happen in only one country at a time.
