The very best pricing manual.......2007-09-23

I bought a second copy of this book after loaning it to too many people to know who had had it last.

The book is not light reading, is highly technical and has more than a little math to comprehend. But, it is worth it.

The strategic thinking is very focused.

If you are stuck on how to price your product or how to combat price competition, read this book.

We have the challenge of taking new products and services to the marketplace and really were looking form some guidance on a place to start. The area we are working in is really developing a new market as well. So we were wondering "What Price do we place on these product and services?"

We could not afford the experts on pricing (aka Strategic Pricing Group now part of The Monitor Group). And were looking for a place to start. All research including reviews from Amazon pointed us to start with this book. To myself and our endeavor, it the first 3 weeks of owning the book, I have read several chapters multiple times and the foundation framework on pricing is shares has already proven to be worth many times the price of the book.

On top of it, it is easy to read. Thanks to the people who took the time to make this book.

Great Book.......2007-02-18

This book is a great guide to the topic of pricing. I'm an MBA student and I believe students as well as professionals can benefit from reading this book. It contains structures and frameworks to work out a tailored pricing strategy and they all make sense. Lots of good examples from business practice illustrate the application of the theories.
The book is relatively quantitative for a marketing book, which I find great because there is no argumentation based on psychology and belief, but on quantifiable parameters - one can see the consulting practice of the authors.
What the book pretty much lacks is a citing of new academic research studies of the topics discussed. There are extensive references, however.
All in all a great book to newcomers in pricing as well as experienced pricers.

This is one of the best books in pricing. My Pricing professor recommended that I buy this and said that marketing managers regularly refer to this book in practice. This is a great buy.

A true classic in feminist theory, and an example of the best scholarship. Rigorous, well-documented, exhaustively and logically argued, this book is a classic and deserves to be in print for the next fifty years.

Please read this book more carefully!.......2004-06-28

The two people who reviewed this book before me probably did not read it carefully. Chodorow in fact quotes hundreds of researches and conclusions made by other psychoanalysts and herself. She states her own opinions about the issues she discusses, of course, but also other critics'. In the notes to the chapters she indicates several further readings to illustrate her points or other theories. This book is very educational and opens the readers' eyes to many crucial aspects of mothering, both for parents and children's sake. I recommend all her books.

Provocative Ideas -- But No Data.......2004-02-06

No data. Zilch. Nada. No in-depth interviews, no participant observation, no historical analysis, no surveys, -- just one woman's musings.
She of course may be right in the end, but without ANY research to backup her claims -- it is just a rant.
This book definitely made me think about raising kids and what I wanted in a spouse, and definitely makes a strong case for equal parenting. But in my opinion, good scholarship is a marriage between data and theory; a synthesis of research and imagination. Without both, a scholarly book falls flat. Chodorow did no research, has no data, and thus this book ends up being speculation at best, flat-out myth-making at worst.

Dated Feminist Text.......2002-06-01

Feminist Nancy Chodorow takes an in-depth look at the role of "mothers" in society. Chodorow presents three common approaches to explain why women mother. In the end, she emerges, not surprisingly, favoring only one.

Chodorow's first explanation is that mothering is a product of biology. Chodorow attacts this theory stating that genetic or sexual differences do not make a woman a better mother and that women do not have a motherly instinct any more than a father. Her argument is seriously found wanting.

The second approach that Chodorow dismisses is the socio-anthropological view that mothering is a product of role-training. This view states that girls learn socially the role that they are to assume - that of mother. Chodorow disagrees that girls simply acquire this role in such an observant fashion.

Chodorow believes that men and women can parent equally, but she feels that the differing relational needs developed in childhood are reproducing women as mothers in adulthood.

Unfortunately, Chodorow completely dismisses the fact that men and women are different. Therefore, her theory is seriously flawed.

The author seems more interested in building his macho paddler image with tales of paddling in punishing circumstances over incredible distances, than in teaching basics (or advanced techniques). I borrowed the book from the library, read it for an hour, and returned it the next day. There is nothing useful here

The Book is Great...For ANYONE........2006-09-02

I am new to kayaking, so I thought got a LOT out of joe's stories, experience, and explinations of kayaking techniques and philosphy. I can see where a more experienced kayaker may feel that the information in this book is beneath them...

(caveat: Kayakers seem to be like bodybuilders...they all think they know everything and can't wait to tell you about the way you should be doing things.)

....but I still think the book is great for even experienced paddlers. Why? Becasue Joe Glickmann, besides being a very experienced kayaker, can write. The book is just a plain good read. It's funny. It has great stories and you can always learn something good from stories.

I say buy it.

Good for beginners.......2006-07-16

I just took a couple on-the-water classes and this book covers the same techniques taught by our instructor (getting back in a kayak with help from one other person, sweep stroke, crab walk, etc.). It is not an in-depth reference book but I just wanted a book to help me remember what we learned in class and this book serves that purpose.

This book is a fun read.

It was actually this book that got me back into kayaking after 30 years.
It is not meant to be a detailed book on the technic of kayaking, but a fun and entertaining adventure biography with enough detail to educate as well. There is just enough information for someone interested in kayaking to get started.
It's a good read for someone thinking about kayaking and interested in real life outdoor adventure.

Not much to learn from this book, even for a beginner.......2004-09-20

The book is 50% watered down information, 50% anecdotes about the author paddling up some river or off the coast of NY or somewhere. Seems to be more oriented towards racing or endurance than just the average person who likes to paddle around. It doesn't have enough information for somebody just starting out, and it has no useful information for an advanced kayaker. Example: He says he's never tried a dry suit, but then goes on to tell you to use a two piece, but that they are probably too hot anyway... As for roll recoveries - he more or less says nobody really does that and it's too hard to explain anyway, so he didn't bother. If you want an excellent book, try "The Essential Sea Kayaker" instead. I got both of them at the same time, and The Kayak Companion is probably going on the shelf never to be read again.

This product may be good for someone brushing up on their Italian but not for a beginner who is going to Italy. The phrases are mostly things you wouldnt need to know or say on a vacation. I have the Pimsleur Italian now and it is much more helpful (and easier). It is just a better format.

Kyra seems to have the life any girl would want: her career as a fashion designer is beginning to take off and her husband, whom she adores, becomes a movie star after the unexpected success of his latest movie. Love, money, fame - what else could a girl want, right? Well, it turns out that the pressures of celebrity threaten a lot more than Kyra's marriage. The author does a good job giving us compelling characters who are doing their best in privileged-yet-trying circumstances. This novel is a fast and fun read.

This book surprised me. It's not your typical Red Ink book ~~ it really is one of the better fiction novels where it's so fun and entertaining and I wasn't able to put the book down. It's perfect for those lazy afternoons (which are becoming more rare as the holidays approach!) ~~ and while a fast read, it is definitely an entertaining one. Not only that, it also provokes thoughts such as, thank goodness, I am not married to a movie star or living in the spotlight all the time.

It is sort of a romance novel but not really ~~ it's not even your typical chick lit novel. It's just a novel with a good story-line and fun to read. This one is about Kyra Felis, a struggling designer, who met Declan McKenna, an up and coming Hollywood movie star and marries him. Shortly after their wedding, he is thrust into the spotlight and into the crazy weird world of Hollywood. Kyra finds herself in the tabloids and fending off a psychotic fan who is obsessed with Declan as well as designing designer clothes for the Oscars for several movie stars. It sounds wonderful ~~ new job, a gorgeous hubby, new big house and a crew to help her maintain that house and lifestyle and as time goes on, Kyra finds herself becoming more and more miserable with the lack of privacy in her house, life and in her marriage. All that is enough to destroy any marriage as well as a person's peace of mind.

Want a sneak peek in the lifestyle of the rich and famous? This book would do it. You find yourself rooting for Kyra and hoping that she will find her peace.

This isn't the best chick lit I've read, but it's not the worst.

A fun book to read that won't take up hours of your time or leave you emotionally drained. You can put it down for days and pick up again without missing a beat. It is a sweet story with an unpredictable outcome. Very unlike most sappy love stories out there. The main character is a person a vast majority of women can relate to, someone who loves with all her heart but cant make a decision on where her heart truly blongs. It will never be the best book you ever read, but you will not be disapointed.
