Not just about Africa.......2005-10-18
This is the most important book I have ever read about Africa and the global economy. I read Mr. Wright's first edition and was in contact with him as he wrote his second. He used a unique archive of audiotapes of oral history, which is maintained in the Gambia. He also conducted personal research on his several trips to The Gambia.
When I was posted there, I visited the oral history project which has transferred thousands of oral histories from magnetic tape to CDs and which has transcribed and translated these oral histories. Donald Wright makes a very convincing case to counteract our bias for written records. He points out that the written records of the colonial powers were biased to make the colonial powers look good at the expense of the local populations. Using oral histories, especially in Africa, is a very valid and useful tool in historical research. What Donald Wright also shows was that African society and culture was well developed and self-sustaining. Africa was not the backward and helpless place we like to think it was. What distressed me most is that most African-Americans share the common preception that Africa was a backward coninent, when that is far from the truth. It is my wish that every American, especially every African-American read this book.
The nation of Numi (which is now part of The Gambia and Senegal) was proud and completely self sufficient, mostly through its own agriculture. Its trading relations served only to provide luxuries that people desired, but not what they required. With European expansion, Numi became dependent on European traders for staple food supplies while supplying peanuts to European buyers, with prices set in Europe -- i.e., the global model of trade we have now. The new European trading model differed greatly from the previously used Islamic/African/Asian trading model, with its ban on interest which left trading partners on a far more equal footing. Numi moved from being at the center of its own universe to becoming a forgotten place on the distant margins of a universe that has been constructed to serve the interests and wealth of Europe, North America, Japan and other big players. Donald Wright lays out the facts without emotion, but the reader cannot help but get emotional. Wright's description of the slave trade is a case in point. Wright does not go down the path to describe, in detail, the horrors of the slave trade. He outlines, rather, the need for regional African powers to have horses to dominate their neighbors. He went on to describe how horses could not be bred in tropical Africa, so they were traded for slaves at 15 slaves per horse. Wright's account of this terrible enterprise, which held human life so cheaply, struck me with greater force than other more detailed descriptions of the personal sufferings in this horrible trade in people. This is a must-read book. Donald Wright is a gifted writer who keeps your interest and pulls you from page to page. By the end of the book your ideas and view of the world will have changed. Mine did.
A fast read that I couldn't put down........2004-05-09
This book is really easy to read. Donald Wright is an good story teller. It brings history to life and sheds light on current events like off-shore job issues, foreign policy, international trade, nation building, military power, etc.
Wright starts by outlining basic theories about globalization. He makes a convincing argument for his case (converting this reader from the Basil Davidson mindset). Wright then shows how these theories played out in the history of Niumi, a small but powerful country on the west coast of Africa. Along the way he tells spellbinding tales about Niumi policitics, economy, religion, and culture. Wright did a great deal of research, and points out what is well documented versus anecdotal. My only wish is that the maps could be more helpful...maybe more detail, more color, more of them.
Good books to read along with this are Skeletons on the Sahara by Dean King, and Francis Bok's book about slavery in the Sudan.
Reading this book has given me 1) a better grasp of African history, 2) a greater awareness of the long history of globalization, and 3)a better ability to read the signs of our times and speculate where the current economic hub is rolling to (hint: its time to start learning Chinese).

Author's comments.......2002-01-25
Has your company moved from traditional work groups to a team format? Is it contemplating such a move? Over 80 percent of Fortune 500 firms already are using teams as all or part of their organizational structure. Nobody know how many less well known companies are following suit.
The Complete Idiots Guide to Team Building will teach you the tools and techniques needed to be a successful team leader. It will enable those with previous supervisory experience to become aware of the changes they must make in management style to succeed in their new roles and what they must do to implement them. It will also prepare newly appointed leaders to move rapidly into productive leadership.
Not only team leaders, but also all team members can benefit from reading this book. Why? In many teams, members assume sub-team or project leadership from time to time. In addition, more and more organizations are turning to self-directed teams -- teams that have no permanent leader. All members are expected to be ready to lead a project.
This book is not an academic treatise, but a pragmatic guide to team leadership than can be immediately applied on the job. Read it to become acquainted with the many facets of team leadership. Keep this book handy to refer to when special problems arise.
Whether you are an experienced team leader, starting your first job, or you are preparing for promotion, this book will serve as a road map to successful leadership.
Great book, but not what I was looking for..........2000-07-12
This book is honest, entertaining, and jam-packed with great ideas, helpful hints, and how-to's. There is information about everything from reasons for using teams in the workplace, to forming strong ones, to helping yours become more successful. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know anything about working in teams!
Unfortunately, although this book was loaded with so much good stuff, it still didn't have what I wanted. I work in student affairs at a college, and I was looking for a book with activities on team-building to use with student groups. If this is what you're looking for, don't buy this book!
This book has some great stuff for anyone who works with teams, but be careful not to expect any more than concepts and explanations...no activities.

Book Description
From the Preface
The objective of this book is to review the basic knowledge and methodology of feeding grazing ruminants in tropical and semitropical countries. It is hoped this information will be of use to farmers, research specialists, teachers, students, extension specialists, feed manufacturers, and others throughout the world concerned with the nutrition of grazing ruminants. A unique feature is the identification of nutritional limitations of grazing ruminants in the tropics, which will be beneficial for increasing animal production efficiency through the application of improved nutrition. A large number of photographs illustrate nutritional deficiencies and conditions in tropical countries.
This book contains 18 chapters concerned with the nutrition of grazing ruminants. The first chapter deals with the contributions, locations, and various types of ruminants and their importance to human welfare in the tropics and subtropics. Chapters 2 - 4 progress through nutrient requirements of grazing ruminants in warm climates, the effects of tropical heat on these requirements, and water requirements for ruminant species. Chapters 5 - 7 discuss grass and legume forage species suitable for tropical regions, pasture management procedures, and energy-protein supplementation programs needed during the extensive dry periods. The importance of tropical forages and soils toward meeting mineral requirements is discussed in Chapter 8. Chapters 9 -14 contain concise, up-to-date summaries of minerals emphasizing mineral status, incidence of mineral deficiencies and excesses in tropical regions, and benefits and methods of mineral supplementation for grazing ruminants are discussed in Chapters 15 - 17. Chapter 18 reviews vitamin nutrition considerations for ruminants consuming tropical forages.

Book Description
In a series of experiments, Daniel M. Wegner told subjects not to think about white bears. Of course, they found it impossible to avoid thinking of the bears\m-\just as it often seems impossible to stop thinking about forbidden foods, a social blunder, or a lost love. Drawing on theories of William James, Freud, and Dewey, as well as on studies in mood control, cognitive therapy, and artificial intelligence, this enlightening book explores the reasons unwanted, embarrassing, or frightening notions are so irresistible.

white bears and other unwanted thoughts.......2006-01-10
I am suffering from ocd. I get uncontrollable bad thoughts all the time. I was looking for a book to help me understand these thoughts. This book may be good to many people but for me, it did not help. You must be a college student or someone with some type of higher education to understand this book. I read it and could not relate to the book.
Before Scheduling an Appointement With a Psych. - Read This!.......2002-02-24
Simply put, this book changed my life... I was going through a long period (over a year in duration) where I had trouble getting rid of "unwanted thoughts"; basically thoughts that I knew would reduce the level of pleasure I was getting out of any given activity. For example, if I dwelt on X while I was undergoing some otherwise-pleasurable activity - where X is an unwanted thought - my level of enjoyment i.e. my appreciation of that activity would decrease. While I was going through these cycles of unwanted thoughts, the quality of my life was drastically reduced. I'm sure "unwanted thoughts" differ for each person, both in their individual characteristics and implications. According to this book, one should not consciously try to suppress unwanted thoughts, as thereby the thoughts will systematically persist in reemerging. Instead, just "let it be" as it were, and inevitably the unwanted thoughts will start to dissipate. Don't be dissuaded by the above editorial review, as though it is true this is not "light reading" per se, it is very well written and in an easy-to-read format with the layman in mind; and it does not contain a lot of jargon. It reads just like a novel and is quite humorous in parts. I'm not a student of psychology but had no problem with my reading and comprehnsion of this book and gleaned a lot of new information out of it, such as how meta-cognition or "thinking about thinking" works. I hate to say anything negative about this book since I found it a self-help book in the truest sense, but its only feature I didn't fully appreciate was the few charts and graphs it contained, even though they were relevant to the information at hand and supplemented the statistics well. If I were the author of the book I'd have put them in the back. That's trivial, though. In summary, next time someone says "just stop thinking about it" in replying to how you should get rid of an unwanted thought, ignore their advice - then enlighten them.
A Great Read.......2001-05-05
A wonderfully engaging, cleverly written book about a serious subject. A real delight.
A refreshing change from traditional mind control rethoric.......2000-08-23
Since graduating high school and moving on to college, I've had significant difficulties concentrating due mostly to what could be described as unwanted thoughts - at least unwanted and the time. This book is the first one I've read that offered scientific evidence supporting the authors points. It didn't solve all my problems, but it has been a great place to start finding solutions.
Easy to read, enlightening, offers different perspective.......2000-03-29
An excellent read for serious students of psychology AND for everybody else.
The upshot of this book is that (according to Wegner's research, which is described in sufficient detail for the reader to make his or her own judgments) the best way to get rid of an obsession is to stop trying to. Wegner's research has found that trying hard to squelch a thought is likely to make it stick harder.
Wegner spends some time discussing how this specifically might tie in to depression, in which a person gets stuck in a rut of negative mood and thought and then is preoccupied with wishing that negative mood weren't there.
You can also come up with areas in your own life in which you've wanted to get rid of some thought and couldn't. Wegner explains what to do when that happens.
"Mental control" in the title refers to how we control our own thoughts -- using our thoughts. It's a bit of a puzzle and Wegner makes some good points about it.
This book will give you a new perspective on this issue. It's a slim little book, not hard to read, but it is entirely serious and substantive. No empty-headed pop psych here. This is the real thing.

Excellent!!!.......2007-01-06
This book is packed with useful information. It is fully illustrated and very easy to read. While reading this book, I frequently found myself thinking "hmm... that's interesting". My personal library contains many books about fishing, but this one is heads and shoulders above the rest. A true "must have" for any beginner, and an entertaining supplement for the experienced angler.
Dense but readable.......2005-09-16
Great little book. Its both a excellent introduction to freshwater fishing as a whole, and an indispensable pocket reference. Very approachable, well illustrated and no filler. No 'secret' fishing techniques, just whats been productive year after year.
Excellent, compact dictionary for fishing, must for beginners.......2005-05-25
This is excellent book... especially for quick reference w.r.t different sport fish,.. verry well edited . I highly recommend this book. I bought 3 other books on fishing,...but i must say this one is the best... though it lacks the colorful pictures other expensive books have,.. it can be an awesome on-site reference book,...
especially for the price, i would say, go for it,....

Book Description
Drew Struzan is the best-kept secret in Hollywood. Over the last thirty years, he's created many of Hollywood's most memorable posters. His art touched generations of filmgoers with unforgettable images for The Star Wars Trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Phantom Menace, Bladerunner, First Blood, The Thing, Back to the Future I - III, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, and hundreds more. Finally, these posters, in addition to paintings from Drew's private collection, several limited edition works, book and album covers and more have been collected into one stunning full color volume, Drew Struzan: Oeuvre. Authors Jessie and Amy Horsting examine the unique forces shaping Struzan's career, his rise as an illustrator, and the perseverance required to succeed and thrive in a notoriously fickle industry. Featuring a foreword by George Lucas, the book also focuses on the history of some ground-breaking posters, relates a few celebrity encounters, and offers commentary from Harrison Ford, Frank Darabont, Alice Cooper, Robert Zemekis, Jim Henson, and many others who have had close encounters with this giant talent.

Oeuvre.......2006-06-27
This is to Drew because Dylan, I know you must read these eventually...beautiful book with perfect illustrations (of course) although they are much more awe inspiring in person! I hope to see you someday...
If you are a "Drew Fan"-then you need this book. My only question is: where is your son's book????
always, bonnie and clyde
Complete works.......2005-12-19
This book of Drew covers not only his best known jobs, but the rejected ones (did anyone knew how many covers for "Back to the future III" Struzan draw?). Some sketches and experiments are also shown.
After seen it, my neighbour decided to buy it :)
awesome book for an awesome artist!.......2005-09-30
My boyfriend and myself actually met Drew after buying this book. He is an amazing artist as well as a very humble man. I recommend this book as a must have for anyone who respects art!
Great art, OK book, Publisher problems.......2005-01-23
First of all, I'm second to none in my admiration for Mr. Struzan's work, all of which garners five stars. This book, however has a number of problems ( and reviewers have given it 5 stars w/out even seeing it!)
To paraphrase Oscar Wilde; it's worse than bad, it's half good. What a missed opportunity! Despite its size and promise, this is not a career retrospective. Although there are a number of anecdotal stories of Drew's early years, there is very little early work. We're told of his many album covers, but shown only the much reproduced Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper art. There is very little here a long-time fan hasn't seen before. ( For those of you contemplating Running Press' "Movie Posters of.. " book, 91 of the 97 pieces in that book are here as well. Frankly, it's a better book. At least you can read the title of the art on the same page.)
The lack of any type of information or credits on the work is extremely frustrating. We're told virtually NOTHING about the work. Pieces possibly done as prints or other than movie one sheets are credited only as "c. 2000 Drew Struzan". What were they done for? How were they done? Some of the more experimental pieces seem to be in oil, rather than Struzan's airbrush and prismacolor style; NO information, not even a simple " 27 x 41 in., acrylic on board" is provided. There are no thumbnails, reference or preliminaries shown; no actual size details. Sequential images of a work in progress? Not here. The Superman poster done for the Thought Factory is a different image here, done in the Leyendecker oil style, rather than the airbrush piece printed. No explanation. No comparison. Just look at the art- what, you want to learn from a book?
OK, so what does the book provide? The production is problematic. The writing is printed in gray, not black, it's lighter on some pages than on others, and the page numbers are printed both in gray AND tiny, making them almost impossible to read. You'll need those page numbers; you need to flip to the rear section to find the list providing the titles and copyrights (again, no other info) of every painting. I know those Star Trek covers I like were comic books because I know Wildstorm is a comic book co.; if I didn't, I wouldn't. Like that Star Wars piece you've never seen before? It's copyright Lucasfilm , of course, so whether it was done for a book cover, video game, fan club magazine or comic book is anyone's guess; unless you know already you're out of luck in terms of finding it in its original incarnation.
The book comes with three 3-page foldouts, another production problem, another questionable result. Two of them in my copy were slit halfway down the fold; I had to exchange it, for which I rec'd a second damaged copy. More on that later. Except for the Star Wars Special Edition triptych, wherein all 3 posters have a common background, the foldouts are wasted. The other 2 are used to see the 3 "Back to the Future" and "Indiana Jones " posters side by side. (The initial -and re-release- domestic "Raiders" poster was done by Amsel, and the 2nd too was by another artist; the 3 Drew posters are not linked compositionally.)Considering the cost they undoubtedly added to the book, they ( at least the two right-side pgs.)could have been put to better use showing a horizontal work , such as the "Lost World" art on p.44-45 or the "Star Wars Roleplaying Game 2000" on p. 140-141, both of which are instead spread across the gutter of the book, a wide 3/4 inch split running down the center of each image. Most of the 2 page spreads are broken up in this manner, though a few have a smooth transition.
So, is the book worth it? To an artist and collector who waited a year and a half for it, it's a disappointment, though a nice set of plates to show your family and friends who Drew is and why you like him so much. The problem seems to be getting a good copy .I rec'd 2 damaged copies, Amazon wouldn't let me exchange a 2nd time so I took the refund; I MIGHT try again in a few months. But I'll be reading other reviews; look at the "used and new" section on the page listing; you'll see multiple " "fulfillment by Amazon. Never read copy" 's at cheap prices with "large wrinkle or bend on DJ" or "multiple folds and tears" listed. Can you say, "return"? This publisher doesn't inspire confidence. That "Howard Pyle, His Life and Art " is coming out soon;a big ticket item, a more omportant artist; maybe we should save our $$ for that, you know? CAVEAT EMPTOR.
WOW.......2005-01-08
If you are a drew fan than it was definitely worth the wait. What I liked most about the book was that it contained work that is not commonly found by the artist. He includes some from his own collection and some with a different approach.
If I have any criticism of the book it would be the quality of a few of the reproductions. Some of the blacks could be richer. I was also hoping for a few more of his grey tone sketches. He has such wonderful line work it would have been nice to see a little more of that.
I was very glad to see some of the pieces that used to be on his website in the book. I miss the old website, this book captures some of whats missing there today.
I like the grey type and blank spaces, both put the art center stage. Overall it is a wonderful collection from a truly amazing artist and person.
Thank you drew!
