Perhaps they really are just a pair of lucky people, but Milton and Rose Friedman are so perfectly matched that destiny must have played some part in their coming together. Milton is a Nobel Prize-winning economist, Rose, an influential theorist who advised American presidents and world leaders on the formation of their economic policies. Together the two wrote books (one flopped, the other is 1982's Free to Choose, a runaway bestseller) and were instrumental in influencing systems and ideas like negative income tax, the balanced budget amendment, tax-withholding, and even drug legalization. At times their ideas seemed outrageous but their strong belief that personal freedom is essential to a sound economy has helped shape many of the West's socioeconomic policies in the latter half of the 20th century.
And it is together, too, that the Friedmans penned their memoirs. The tone of Two Lucky People is quite humble despite their considerable achievements. They remember the lingering, technical conversations--which would put most people to sleep--that they shared in front of their fireplace; the personal and professional relationships they had with Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Margaret Thatcher; Milton's winning of the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize for Economic Science; and countless other triumphs in their field. The book lacks the personal information--tastes in literature, art, music--and the quotidian details that help form a solid sense of personality. But their passion for their vocation seems all-consuming and maybe, in the end, that's what defines them best.
Book Description
In Two Lucky People, Rose and Milton Friedman provide a memorable and lively account of their lives, the people they knew, and the work they shared. Their involvement with world leaders and many of this century's most important public policy issues moves their memoir beyond the merely personal and makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the history of twentieth-century ideas.
"The Friedmans come across as the last Enlightenment thinkers in a post-modern world. . . . This is a book that restores your faith in reasoned discourse. . . . There really are people who believe in scholarly exchange as a way to discover truth."—David Brooks, New York Times Book Review
"The Friedmans are a feisty couple, who clearly delight in their lives and each other. And shining through their reticence, and their conservatism, is a decency that even liberals will recognize."—Milton and Judith Viorst, Washington Post Book World
"This engaging book recounts the life and contributions of one of America's most influential writers and economists in the second half of the twentieth century. And her husband's no slouch either. . . . An indispensable guide through the evolution of economic thought."—Stephen Moore, National Review
"A thought-provoking book and one rich in history, the personal history of the Friedmans . . . and the cultural and political history of our country."—Steve Huntley, Chicago Sun-Times Books
"[Two Lucky People] is almost like a letter from a couple of old friends—a couple of old friends who had a long, compelling intellectual journey, came to know some of the great world leaders of this century, and had 60 years of happy, supportive marriage."—N. Gregory Mankiw, Fortune
"A rich autobiographical and historical panorama."—William P. Kucewicz, Wall Street Journal

Probably the Best Autobiography I Have Ever Read!.......2005-11-17
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in Milton Friedman, economics, The University of Chicago, twentieth-century intellectual history, university politics, or rags-to-riches stories. Both authors have led very interesting lives and the tone throughout the book is upbeat and positive. This is one of the best and most-influential books I have ever read. Milton Friedman is one of the most clear-thinking, intelligent people of the twentieth-century and our country would be better off if more of his ideas on economics, education, and freedom were put into practice.
God helps those who help themselves.......2001-06-06
Milton Friedman is one the of tough guy who always support the free market idea.He is the first guy who builds the monetary school and also a good story teller. He does do a great job and I guess that is not just luck.
A fascinating account of two remarkable lives.......2000-03-31
The memoirs extend from the Friedmans' early years to 1997. The earliest times are recounted in separate voices by Rose and Milton, each telling her or his own story seriatim. For the later years, their narrative voices are presented sometimes jointly and sometimes in tandem. This method adds a great deal to the readability and interest of their story. It allows the reader to get different impressions of the same people and places and brings out the (rare) disagreements between the two authors. It provides more information and presents a more vivid picture than is typically the case in memoirs by a single author....
To read "Two Lucky People" is to get on intimate terms with a wholly delightful and wholly admirable couple. Here is a book to savor. Instructive and endlessly entertaining, it brings to life a whole era from the Great Depression to the present day.
Very Boring.......1999-08-24
More of a travelog than an interesting business book. I could not even finish it, which is very unusual for me.
Fascinating story; actually a "two-fer" - 2 biographies.......1998-09-04
I'm indebted to the review by Thomas Sowell in the July 6 issue of Forbes Magazine (Forbes.com) This book has history, sociology, romance, economics, faith, good stories and more.

We end up hating what we create out of love, and then we must learn to love what we've grown to hate. That's longtime organizational consultant Geoffrey M. Bellman's thesis in this slim, smart, plainspoken and occasionally overidealistic volume on embracing, in all their glory and nastiness, the organizations to which we've devoted our lives. In this way, we ennoble both them and ourselves.
The first section of Bellman's book aims to bring us to terms with everything we hate about organizations--be they corporate, institutional, governmental, or, um, our workplace--then urges us to look beneath the day-to-day workings of organizations and start imagining them at their full potential--what Bellman calls a quest for their "beauty and life."
Part Three offers 20 "renewal assertions" for sparking change within organizations--on personal, small-group, and systemic levels--and the final section actually gives some fairly concrete steps for turning those assertions into action. Throughout the book, astute self-questions prompt the process of reconciliation with organizations (even though they sometimes sound scarily like New Age exercises for interpersonal growth: "Describe your relationship with this organization as it has developed so far, beginning with awareness and moving toward love." Yikes!)
There is much to recommend here, though. If Bellman's style often evokes a gentle natured, Birkenstock-wearing family therapist, he does manage to lay out a clear path for rethinking and attempting organizational change without offering even one of those honeyed "real-life snapshots" that proliferate in this genre. That said, this book still seems best suited to those with the clout to effect change, be they CEOs, veeps, or even department supervisors. Bellman's slightly wide-eyed promise that we can all transform the organizations we're a part of if we only take a good, hard look at our own attitudes and assumptions seems oblivious of the fact that, usually, those most willing to give of themselves to an organization are already getting the most from it. In big organizations, as in dysfunctional families, sometimes the love you take just isn't equal to the love you make. --Timothy Murphy
Book Description
Reviewing more than 30 years of work with organizations, Geoffrey Bellman offers his insight into the nature of these beasts in all their madness, mystery, wretchedness, and wonderfulness -- and points the way out of the whole chaotic mess. He suggests that by recognizing the beast in themselves, readers will feel less distant from -- and more responsible for creating and improving -- these troubling structures.
Bellman combines the beauty and beast aspects of organizations into 20 renewal and redesign principles that teach how to embrace the organizational world while working hard to change it.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2001-11-08
Geoff Bellman's take on the Beauty and the Beast story is intended to help you breathe new life into stagnant, unworkable bureaucracies. While nicely written, this book fails to provide much in the way of hands-on technique that can be applied to real-life business. Nevertheless, we (...) recommend this book to anyone looking for an uncommonly inspirational viewpoint of modern-day organizations.
Asking the Correct Questions.......2000-08-28
Bellman's book provides much more than suggestions about how to successfully implement organizational change. Its additional value includes a series of questions, that when answered will provide important insight into individual and organizational history, motivation and prospects for future success.
This is a very readable and thought-provoking book.
Balanced Perspective -> Creative Tension -> Inspiring Vision.......2000-07-19
I recently finished Geoff Bellman's book The Beauty of the Beast, and I thoroughly enjoyed this very readable book! It offers a simple, realistic, and accepting perspective on organizations as they are, including their "warts, wrinkles, and wonder." It reveals a depth of understanding that is only gained through years of engagement with and thoughtful reflection on organizations . . . and on oneself.
The Beauty of the Beast guides the reader through his/her own balanced exploration of organizations and his/her relationship to them - an honest, eye-opening, often times humbling exploration. A potential outcome of this exploration is a much larger frame of reference in regards to organizations and one's life within them. Geoff teaches us of the need to hold "creative tension" between opposite truths, between competing needs and agendas; something that many disciplines are telling us is essential to our long-term success in today's complex world. But it is clear that Geoff is teaching from experience and from his own capacity for this work. He demonstrates his Eldership and his personal and professional maturity by modeling his ability to hold a balanced perspective towards each situation, to see the truth in all sides . . . even those sides that differ from his own.
And while this exploration takes the reader into the dark "authority-worshiping, talent-diminishing, heart-stomping" beastly aspects of organizations, it also unfolds a message of great hope - hope for the prospect of a meaningful, creative, value-adding individual life right now and for sowing the seeds for organizations generations hence. And to help us in this process he lays out a practical guide of inquiry and reflection for engaging a future that is still only a possibility - but is inspiring and powerful enough to evoke our best efforts now.
I think this is an important book. If even just a small percentage of people in an organization could develop a working relationship to the perspective Geoff offers, efforts towards organizational renewal would have a much higher success rate.
The Beauty of the Beast -- Bellman's New Book.......2000-04-28
The Beauty of the Beast is a welcome addition to Bellman's writings. As a management consultant, I found lots of immediately useful ideas in the book for working with my clients. From his early matrix examining how loving or hating organizations can hurt or help us, to his reasoning for why we create the bureaucratic organizations that we love to hate, I found sound thinking that has already influenced my work. His 20 renewal assertions read like the synthesis of a long consulting career. The assertions are like the design for an appreciative journey into finding and developing life in organizations. Each of the 20 assumptions about organizational change is accompanied by several questions to enable better and more lasting change. In terms of adding value to my work, Bellman's book was like getting a senior consultant as a mentor. So, was it worth the money? It was a bargain.
Roadmap to a Better Future.......2000-04-18
For all of us who yearn for change within our organizations, The Beauty of the Beast has a clear and hopeful message: we can do something about it! In drawing from 30 years of work as a master change facilitator in corporate and community settings, Geoff Bellman offers very practical advice about how to create the organizational future we want. The Beauty of the Beast offers step-by-step guidance through the change process, showing us how to embrace both the beauty and the beast in the organizations we inhabit. It offers us a roadmap to a better future. Read it!

Book Description
Soil Physical Chemistry, Second Edition takes up where the last edition left off. With comprehensive and contemporary discussions on equilibrium and kinetic aspects of major soil chemical process and reactions this excellent text/reference presents new chapters on precipitation/dissolution, modeling of adsorption reactions at the mineral/water interface, and the chemistry of humic substances. An emphasis is placed on understanding soil chemical reactions from a microscopic point of view and rigorous theoretical developments such as the use of modern in situ surface chemical probes such as x-ray adsorption fine structure (XAFS), Fournier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies, and scanning probe microscopies (SPM) are discussed.
Book Description
Understanding Behaviorism explains the basis of behavior analysis and its application to human problems in a scholarly but accessible manner. Behaviorism is defined as the proposition that a science of behavior is possible, and the book begins by exploring the question of whether behavior is free or determined, relating behaviorism to pragmatism, and showing how feelings and thoughts can be treated scientifically. Baum then discusses ancient concepts such as purpose, knowledge, and thought, as well as social problems such as freedom, responsibility, government, and culture. This new edition of a classic work is an invaluable part of the new evolutionary perspective in understanding behavior in general and culture in particular, and culminates by offering practical approaches to improving the lives of all humankind.
Customer Reviews:
Behaviorism? Isn't that only used for autism treatment...?.......2006-01-05
Of course, the answer to that question is no. Granted, many laypeople in today's world are first hearing about "behaviorism" through their familiarity with applied behavior analysis (ABA) and autism treatment. There is, however, a great deal more to talk about than autism treatment, as Baum details for us.
As a college professor who teaches in a graduate program in behavior analysis, this is the first book that I recommend to my students to give them a better idea of the "big picture" of the philosophy of behaviorism and the science of behavior analysis. Baum does a wonderful job describing the relevance of both the philosophy and the science to our world and those who "behave" in it.
Understanding the contents of the book should help current behavior analysis "technicians" to become "scholars" in their discipline.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-01-23
Overall the book is good, it serves as a good introduction to the American Way of life and is very detailed for people new to the USA.
I find the best part to be the basics section, especially the part about "what americans say" and "what americans do not say", it is a little short but helps a lot. So if you are new to the country and want to find out about the culture, this is a good book for you.
An invaluable toolkit to understand the culture and language better and faster.......2006-11-17
I got this book from our ISS (International Student Service) office and at first, I only treat it as some reading materials while I am waiting for my laundry.
However, after I really went into the book, I realized it was the book I have been long seeking for: brief, clear and ultimately helpful. Yes, it is short, but since I have no intention to be a sociologist about American society, the simple and everyday facts and words are what I need to know.
The book covers many categories of American society like food, sports, education, transportation, etc., very comprehensively. The best of all is there is a list of frequently encountered words and phrases within this category at the end of each chapter.
After reading the book, I can now fully understand what the person said when I called in to order my pancake with eggs. This is the book you can finish in two weeks while still getting to know the essentials, not an enclyclopedia that takes forever. Actually, I finished it in 1 week and I no longer stutter while I am ordering food because I just didn't know which word I should use.
My suggestion to INS: include this nice booklet in your brochure to the new immigrants.
Lern about USA.......2006-03-21
This book is different from that I expected. I thought about a classical Idioms Dictionary. Althought it's a good book that introduce not only American idioms but American way of life too.
You can also lern idioms but are greater the advices ( Thanks to teach me to give tips!!!!!)
Best book on American English to a foreigner.......2005-03-05
Very informative and the content is carefully categorized so it's quite easy to find what you want.
The size of the book also makes it handy to carry around.
A Fantastic Guide!.......2004-08-04
Language and culture go together, and I was happy to see this book emphasize both. My students live in the United States and need to understand how Americans speak, so this book was really helpful. I also use Whaddaya Say, 2nd Edition with them so they understand how these idioms are really said.
Book Description
The spread of Islam around the globe has blurred the connection between a religion, a specific society, and a territory. One-third of the world's Muslims now live as members of a minority. At the heart of this development is, on the one hand, the voluntary settlement of Muslims in Western societies and, on the other, the pervasiveness and influence of Western cultural models and social norms. The revival of Islam among Muslim populations in the last twenty years is often wrongly perceived as a backlash against westernization rather than as one of its consequences. Neofundamentalism has been gaining ground among a rootless Muslim youth -- particularly among the second- and third-generation migrants in the West -- and this phenomenon is feeding new forms of radicalism, ranging from support for Al Qaeda to the outright rejection of integration into Western society.
In this brilliant exegesis of the movement of Islam beyond traditional borders and its unwitting westernization, Olivier Roy argues that Islamic revival, or "re-Islamization," results from the efforts of westernized Muslims to assert their identity in a non-Muslim context. A schism has emerged between mainstream Islamist movements in the Muslim world -- including Hamas of Palestine and Hezbollah of Lebanon -- and the uprooted militants who strive to establish an imaginary ummah, or Muslim community, not embedded in any particular society or territory. Roy provides a detailed comparison of these transnational movements, whether peaceful, like Tablighi Jama'at and the Islamic brotherhoods, or violent, like Al Qaeda. He shows how neofundamentalism acknowledges without nostalgia the loss of pristine cultures, constructing instead a universal religious identity that transcends the very notion of culture. Thus contemporary Islamic fundamentalism is not a single-note reaction against westernization but a product and an agent of the complex forces of globalization.

A new foundation for understanding modern Islam's sentiments and radicalism.......2006-12-11
Globalized Islam: The Search for a new Ummah pinpoints growing Islam militancy not abroad but in the West, arguing that the revival of Islam among Muslims over the last few decades is more a force of the pressures of globalization than a reaction to the West. In moving beyond the traditional, more common ' East versus West' argument, GLOBALIZED ISLAM provides a new foundation for understanding modern Islam's sentiments and radicalism, offering an essential key to understanding not evident in similar-sounding discussions.

Excellent analysis, although slightly verbose, but very insightful.......2006-01-09
This book picks aparts the predjudices and simplifications used in popular culture, media, etc. and gets to the heart of how individual Muslims are reacting to (not necessarily against) globalization and westernization. I can't put it down, and it is an extremely helpful introduction to the politics of Islam in the Middle East, Western Europe, and the United States (and even a bit of East and South Asia).
Interesting Points, Difficult Reading.......2005-05-27
This is a quite interesting, but somewhat difficult to read, book on the movement of Islamic people away from the traditional countries to live in the West. Obviously they bring their religion with them, yet at the same time they live in the west and generally have adopted Western ways.
Intermixed with this is discussion on the more radical elements of Muslim people. He especially talks a lot about Ben Ladin and other armed groups such as Palestinians, Chechens, the Balkans and others. He appears to view them as only the radical fringe.
When he talks about Christians, he generalizes, ignoring the radical fundamental fringe in the United States that blows up abortion clinics; and the conflict in Northern Ireland. This may well be due to his being French and living in Europe.
The points he makes are sometimes difficult to understand, but that may well be because of the language. I'd hate to have someone review a book I'd written in French.
Where is Islam headed?.......2004-12-28
There are plenty of ideas in this book. And I think it is worth reading, even though I rarely agreed with Roy's arguments or his conclusions.
The author begins by saying that "culturalists" say that "Islam is the issue." And he disagrees with them. Yes, the culturalists include just about everyone: Islamists, moderate Muslims, Islamophobes, anti-Islamophobes, and orientalists. But not him. He's not so sure it even makes sense to discuss a Muslim culture. And he sees what most of us think of as Islamic struggles actually being examples of nationalism and ethnicity. While Islam may provide some people with a sense of identity, he points out that in the war against Israel, there's no real difference politically between the seculars and the Islamists. And he asks if jihad is really closer to Marx (Karl, not Harpo or Groucho) than it is to the Koran.
I sort of blinked when I read that. While it might be true, I didn't quite agree with Roy's logic. He continued by explaining that the Chechens and the Levantine Arabs are engaged in liberation struggles. I think he's wrong about the Levantine Arabs. I see their struggle as being neither pro-religious, nor pro-nationalistic, nor even pro-ethnic, but very specifically anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-ethnic, and against human rights. Roy calls the Levantine Arabs a people, but I see them as an antipeople who have no positive goals for themselves that need to be satisfied but only goals of hurting a people they have banded together to fight. All this is quite the opposite of a liberation struggle. And using Islam as a means to get people to identify with one side in this fight does indeed make Islam at least part of the issue.
Roy continues by discussing the fact that Muslims still come up with polemics against competing religions. According to the author, Christians, for the most part, do not. Well, the Catholics do not. The Evangelicals and the Christian Right Wing do. And Roy concludes that the Christians aren't really competing against Islam. But once again, I think he's overlooking the possibility that some people might consider polemics to be poor form. I'm as willing as anyone to discuss the advantages of polytheism over monotheism. But I do not want to appear as though I am trying to impose religious practices on others.
Next, the author discusses the Westernization of Islam. Some of this section was quite interesting, especially the age-old differences between Sufis and Salafis. And later, there is a section on the future of Muslim terrorism and questions of deterritorialization. Once again, I had to ask what he really meant by that. Muslim terrorists exist in time and space just like the rest of us. At best, he meant to differentiate between explicit state support and implicit support from many of the people in a state.
Near the end of the book, Roy says that this is a time of great intellectual confusion. As an example, anti-imperialist "supporters" of Women's Rights support the Taliban! Well, if he thinks he is confused, that is fine. I'm not. If you support the Taliban, you do not support Women's Rights.
Yes, it is true that some Christian moderates are in an alliance with some Muslim fundamentalists. Some of them appear to be in this alliance to fight against Christian fundamentalists and Jews. And it may be interesting to see why. And yes, some Jewish moderates and Christian fundamentalists are allied as well, just to defend themselves. Once again, it may be interesting to see if these alliances extend to anything more than that. And I think it could be a good idea to investigate the very rare alliances of Muslim moderates and Jewish fundamentalists. But I think Roy has not offered us much merely by saying that there are alliances which cut across religious and political boundaries.
I found the book interesting, and I think it contains some intriguing facts.
One thing right.......2004-11-17
One thing is 100% correct here. Islamism is a direct reaction tot he west, employing western concepts like 'human rights' and such other odd ideas to then attack the west. THe Islamic world was much more liberal and moderate before it came into contact with the west. The current wave of terrorism and hatred is based much more on islamic reading and studying in the west then actually the original 'Islamic civilization' before contact with the west. for instance the hatred of 'womens rights' is more based on a hatred of the western woman, then it is the way Islamic women actually used to act. The anti-semitism of modern islam is anothee aspect that was wholly stolen from the West. The search for the 'real' islam is a waste and this book is correct in understanding the Islamism is merely a search, like communism, for a third way. It is the wests coddling of Islam that has emboldened its most fanatic members, it is the lefts support of terrorism that created the 'left wing' terrorism that then transformed into militant Islamic terrorism, it is the wests self hatred that has made Islam hate the west.
