Customer Reviews:
Back where I started. Not exactly what I bargained for........2003-10-07
I bought this book as a gift for my brother who was looking for information on finding a new agent in the U.S and abroad, how to approach agents, how to find quality agents, information about affiliations, training/try-out camps etc. Unfortunately this book offers no information in that department. Instead it assumes you are being recruited from a college team, which is of little use to semi-professional athletes, or those who are well out of college.
If you're looking for semi-interesting anecdotes and examples of the business end of sports, check this book out of the libarary and give it a read. If you want specific or practical info to get you started or point you in the right direction this is not the book for you.
A Must Read for New Agents!.......2000-09-13
We use this book as required reading for our course offered with sportsjobs.com, as well as in our mentorhship program with sports-management.com!

Book Description
Knowledge, power and practice in work psychology are inseparable and reciprocally affect each other. Understanding this linkage is vital to managerial practices, themselves affected by work psychology. Illuminating and incisive, this volume traces the development of work psychology and organizational behavior from the early twentieth century to the present day. More than simply a conventional history of ideas, it is a demonstration of how each emerging school of thought has reflected the search for solutions to particular management problems, within specific social, political and economic contexts. Work Psychology and Organizational Behaviour documents the key developments in the field, from scientific management and industrial psychology, through the human relations movement, to such current concerns as organizational culture, leadership, and human resources management. Wendy Hollway skillfully examines the production of key developments within particular conditions and power structures and then charts the impact of each trend upon the emergence of new management tools, work practices and ways in which employee regulation is attempted. She concludes with a projection of the likely future development of work psychology and organizational behavior in light of current changes in work and employer-employee relations. This provocative volume will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and practitioners in psychology, organizational behavior, sociology, human resource management, and public administration. "A well researched and generally well-explicated personal construal of the historical development of occupational psychology, particularly the interdependencies between scientific knowledge, power relations in the production process, and our everyday practices as occupational psychologists. I would recommend this book to others as a laudable intervention, but more importantly, as one which offers an alternative perspective of both the discipline of occupational psychology and of the actions of practicing psychologists working either in industry or in academia." --The Occupational Psychologist "Hollway's basic point is right and it is a powerful one. Occupational psychology has evolved as an intellectual 'servant of power', focused on the employers' problems of selecting, training, and motivating a workforce, transforming reluctant compliance into whole-hearted commitment. The 1980's literature on employee involvement is ample testimony to the continuing search for this chimera." --Journal of Occupational & Organizational Psychology "The book is an important contribution to the field of study and I would recommend it as a key text in the teaching of work psychology and organizational behavior." --Systems Practice "Defining Organizational Behaviour as a subject these days is no easy task; there is a vast explosion of information, data and theories; and there is not shortage of texts or monographs. One important strand is certainly Work and Psychology. Wendy Hollway attempts to cover 'those areas of knowledge that focus on people in the workplace and that affect practice in work organizations' and her definition is not at all an unhelpful one. . . . Hollway's book will not disappoint MBA students and others interested in the warp and woof of the subject as seen by an occupational psychologist, especially her discourse on the future of OB." --Journal of General Management "A must for all those researchers, practitioners and teachers who take the area of organizational behavior seriously." --Psychology and Developing Societies

Volume B covers the ecological significance of the interactions among clay minerals, organic matter and soil biota. Soil is a dynamic system in which soil minerals constantly interact with organic matter and microorganisms. Close association among abiotic and biotic entities governs several chemical and biogeochemical processes and affects bioavailability, speciation, toxicity, transformations and transport of xenobiotics and organics in soil environments. This book elaborates critical research and an integrated view on basic aspects of mineral weathering reactions; formation and surface reactivity of soil minerals with respect to nutrients and environmental pollutants; dynamics and transformation of metals, metalloids, and natural and anthropogenic organics; effects of soil colloids on microorganisms and immobilization and activity of enzymes, and metabolic processes, growth and ecology of microbes. It offers up-to-date information on the impact of such a processes on soil development, agricultural production, environmental protection, and ecosystem integrity.

Book Description
With an Introduction by Anthony Storr. E.A. Bennet introduces us to the thought of Jung in the context of his life and his life's work. In this classic overview of Jung's sixty-year career, Bennet covers the "background and development of Jung's thinking, personality classifications, analysis of the components of personality, the unconscious, dreams, the active imagination, alchemical symbolism and philosophy, psychotherapy, and Jung's relationship to Freud... The author's choice of material is judicious and the exposition of it shows deft craftsmanship." (Choice).
Customer Reviews:
My 100-word book review.......2006-03-15
Edward Armstrong Bennet was a friend and contemporary of Jung's, and his book What Jung Really Said is a lucidly-written overview of Jung's psychology and its development. This is a slim volume, and Bennet does not venture into any of the controversial depths of Jung's thought; however, it is a concise introduction to the subject, for beginners. There are some interesting gems of information, including the fact that Jung studied both Chinese and European alchemy. Also that Jung had dinner with HG Wells, who then wrote a story based around Jung's idea of the collective unconscious; I hadn't known that!
Put this book on the PHILOSOPHY and RELIGION shelves too!.......1998-01-23
Re-reading this book, after a 10-year study of Jungian Psychology, made it clear to me that C.G. Jung is a Philosopher's Philosopher. At the back of this book is Jung's public view of GOD and Religion, and he informs us of the psychic error and impertinence of making a "Hypostasis" (as in Plato's 'Ideal'), and he defers to the sacredness of the "Individual Psyche" versus the "Collective Psyche". Jung is clearly "Aristotlean" here. This is opposite many peoples' conception/use of Jung (e.g., my edition of Random House Encyclopedia discounted Jung's ideas as examples of "Idealist" Philosophy with Archetypes, et al)!
Jung believed there is genuine value and meaning in neuroses and even madness; but, now, the credibility of all Philosphers must now be viewed in terms of their respective healthy or unhealthy Psyches! Most importantly, many Western Philosophers [mostly since Descartes] show a severe mind-body thinking-feeling split; and, this is different in Eastern Philosophy and Western Religions. Jung's words have great significance for Eastern and Western Philosopy and World Religions in the coming Millennium! Bennet's contribution serves to protect us from distortions of Jung so commonly found in name-dropping derivative works.

Customer Reviews:
Happy riding.......2007-09-12
Great book! Very helpful when it came to clear, concise descriptions of what I would encounter on my ride. Have lent this book to about 5 friends and they've all said it was helpful. My book is pretty beat up now but still going strong!
Pretty good, but lacks a few important things.......2007-02-21
It's a comprehensive guide, with 51 routes of varying skill levels, but lacks a few things:
- Enough information on public transit connections.
- The pages could have been better laid out so the mile charts and maps could be a spread that could easily be photocopied and carried in a pocket, but they are often spread in a way that does not make this possible.
- I'm not sure if this would be possible, but rating climbs as cat4 to cat1 would be tremendously helpful.
That said, I'm happy I bought this book. It's a pretty good intro to biking in the Bay Area.
Author's Review of 3rd Edition.......2002-04-23
April 23, 2002 - The third edition is out now and SHOULD be available at Amazon.com.
This edition offers 13 new rides and addresses observed shortcomings posted by another reviewer. The maps have been improved so that now it's easy to distinguish between dirt and paved roads. There's a section called "How to get there" that describes the best way to get to the start point. Still, I always recommend bringing a road map, if you're unfamiliar with an area.
The book quality is also substantially improved, with better quality paper and rounded corners.
I think you'll enjoy the new rides, most of which are shorter than in past editions. The mountain bike rides are particularly noteworthy.
...Let's ride! Ray Hosler
good one, but.............2000-05-06
Doesn't tell you how to get to the starting point. Maybe should also give directions from major highways. 2) In the mtn bike section, could not figure out where I can start on a path. I chose mtn bike riding because I don't like being on the roads. It was hard to tell the difference on the key between dirt road and paved path. The key icons look very similiar.
Excellent guide to Bay Area cycling.......1999-08-15
I bought this book about a year ago when I first moved to the Bay Area, and did all of the East Bay road rides, and a few others. With the exception of one error that I found the hard way (in the Calaveras Road ride, Evans Road doesn't really turn into North Park Victoria Drive -- you have to make a right turn!), this book is accurate, interesting, and the routes are well-chosen and as nice as any I've found in the Bay Area. Most of the rides are fairly challenging for a casual rider, but certainly not impossible. I've used it as a basis for my own explorations, stitching various routes together.
I can't speak for the mountain bike rides, as I haven't tried any of them.
All in all, this is a great sampling of rides and a interesting read with your Sunday afternoon beer, after an invigorating ride through the beautiful Bay Area hills and canyons.

Customer Reviews:
Enticing Start--Costly Finish?.......2006-01-20
RSMeans is a well known name in construction--so well known that I expected much better from this book. Here are some pros and cons of this edition:
Pros:
You can get a very quick idea of what a broad range of projects will cost. Project costs are itemized in some detail: how much material and how much labor are required for specific size projects. Descriptions also include discussions of project quality differences and of what parts a DIY-er might reasonably complete. As a first pass in cost and time estimating this is very helpful information. Additionally, the book provides regional factors for adjusting project costs to local conditions. Also very helpful.
But on moving beyond the first pass of estimating, the book falls short in the following ways:
First, and most annoying, there is no discussion of labor costs by trade. Wallpaper hangers don't make the same as tile layers who don't make the same as plumbers. Thus, there is no way to estimate what you would really save using paint instead of wallpaper. You could estimate your savings based on the project's average hourly labor charge but this will be wildly misleading. And the average charge is the only number you can calculate from the project sheets because you are given only labor hours--not labor costs.
Second, project details aren't consistent: bathroom projects include line items for electric outlets, switches, and lights. Kitchens do not. Lighting is a major element in good kitchen design. Where are these costs?
Third, there is no discussion of demolition costs: What does it cost to rip out your old kitchen or bath before installing the new one? Similarly, it's not clear whether project costs listed for plumbing are for relocating drains or simply hooking up to existing locations. This can be a major cost factor.
Why do these "cons" matter? Remodeling an island kitchen can cost $16,653 (p.127) or the same size kitchen remodel can cost $36,050 (p.129). This isn't a trivial difference. If you are trying to determine whether your proposed project is closer to $16k then $36k, you need better information than RSMeans provides. Differences in material choices often mean differences in labor hours. So just adjusting your material choices in hopes of controlling your costs could be very misleading.
RSMeans could improve this book significantly by
1. adding more and better detailed tables of information on "Alternate Materials" (see p. 121), including labor hours & costs and many more interior finish materials,
2. adding a table of hourly labor costs by trade and discuss the contractor's role and fee in more detail,
3. improving the consistency of the project detail sheets across projects (so that both kitchens and baths would have lighting and electrical outlets),
4. providing users with project worksheets that are consistent with the book's project worksheets.
The bottom line: Use this book for a first pass, but then, if you are a novice (or even if you aren't) get three professional estimates before you start any significant project.

Book Description
Sammy’s never been what you might call lucky. But finding a dead cat on her birthday? That ranks up there in her top-10 unluckiest moments. And not just because it was the ugliest dead thing she’d ever seen. No, it was more the chain of events that happened after.
Like getting hosed down by a crazy cat lady who blames Sammy for her pet’s violent end. And being chased through an alley by a guy with a cleaver. And being thrown in the ring by a cranky pro-wrestler called
El Gato—oh, no wait, that was the good part of her day.
Customer Reviews:
GreAt BoOk!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-02
This book is written very well and the end is, as always pretty surprising. Now to the story...Sammy's life is a disaster: She lives in her Grams' apartment which is only for seniors, so she always has to sneak up the fire escape. Her mom left her for a career in Hollywood and then suddenly she shows up on Sammy's birthday. She came to tell Sammy that she isn't turning fourteen, she's turning 13 because her mom had made a fake birth certificate. Sammy is really upset but then she and her friend Holly find dead cats all over town in garbage cans and they start solving the mystery. At a new wrestling school, Slammin' Dave's,(where Sammy also learns some nice wrestling moves) there's a wrestler, El Gato who looks very scary since he always has a cat mask and costume on and never takes it off, so Sammy and Holly become very suspicious. In the end El Gato turns out to be someone totally different than they would have thougt. How they solve the mystery and find out who the cat killer was, will grab you and make you want to keep reading and reading. I really enjoyed the book and read it in only two days and I recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries. The characters are described good and likable except for Heather and her friends,Sammy enemies. The book is also a real page-turner and i would recommend the other Sammy Keyes books as well. I hope this review helped and that you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Sammy Keyes.......2006-09-28
Sammy Keyes and the Psycho Kitty Queen was written by Wendlin Van Draanen. It all started when Sammy found a dead cat in the dumpster. She thought a lot about the cats after she found another one in the garbage. After her own cat went missing, Sammy had to see what was going on.
This book was exciting and suspenseful because of all the action. I liked the ending because the problem was solved. Sometimes I find myself a lot like Sammy and I can picture myself as her in the book. The main problem was very unique, weird, and interesting because the author used dead cats. The characters seemed very real to me because the whole book was realistic fiction.
Wendling Van Draanen uses a deep voice throughout the book. Very few of the words she used were unknown to me. It was interesting that every time I came to an unusual word she described it. Unlike other authors, Wendling ended every chapter in a suspenseful way. I think she has a lot of creativity to come up with this great book.
Out of all the books I've read, this one is one of my favorites. I liked it because between the rising action there are many problems. Every time Sammy solved a problem, I thought the book was going to be over. I recommend this book because it's suspenseful, thrilling, and funny.
Sammy Keyes and the Psycho Kitty Queen might be a little weird at the beginning. You'll want to stop reading because a couple of cats died and there's a weird wrestler that doesn't take off his cat suit. There's a reason to all that, and you need to find out.
Look out for the Psycho Kitty Queen!.......2006-05-17
The book Sammy Keys and the Psycho Kitty Queen written by Wendelin Van Drannen is an exciting adventure! I would give this book 5 stars because it was a page turner and there were exciting events in every chapter. I just couldn't put this book down.
Join Sammy on a quest to find a mischievous cat killer. On the way she is chased down an alley by a man with a butcher knife and gets hosed down by a psycho kitty queen. If that isn't enough her archenemy Heather Ascota has the same birthday as her! Heather's brother gives Sammy a lucky horseshoe and Heather will do anything to get it back- even fight Sammy for it.
If you're looking for a story filled with adventure, laughs, and a psycho kitty queen, this is the book to pick!
