Book Description
Since the late 1990s, technology markets have declined dramatically. Responding to the changing business climate, companies use strategies of open innovation: acquiring technologies from outside, marketing their technologies to other companies, and outsourcing manufacturing. But open innovation is not enough; it is mainly a way to run a business to its endgame. By itself, open innovation results in razor-thin profits from products that compete as commodities. Businesses also need a path to renewal. No one ever achieved a breakthrough with open innovation.
Our capacity for creating breakthroughs depends on a combination of science, imagination, and business; the next great waves of innovation will come from organizations that get this combination right. During periods of rapid economic growth, companies and investors focus on the short term and forget where breakthroughs come from. Without appropriate engagement and reinvestment, the innovation ecology breaks down. Today, universities, technology companies, government funding agencies, venture capitalists, and corporate research laboratories need to foster the conditions in which breakthroughs arise.
In Breakthrough, Mark and Barbara Stefik show us how innovation works. Drawing on stories from repeat inventors and managers of technology, they uncover the best practices for inventing the future. This book is for readers who want to know how inventors do their work, how people become inventors, and how businesses can create powerful cultures of innovation.

Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-03-24
Mark and Barbara Stefik's guide to innovation is based on their belief that the new century demands that business foster inventive strategies. The authors tell inventors, entrepreneurs and managers what they can and must do to achieve breakthrough innovations. They explain the basis for innovation, the context of invention and what breakthroughs mean in terms of business strategy for the twenty-first century. The authors based their research on interviews with inventors and managers, including many from the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). Their book is thorough, clearly written and packed with anecdotes, although at times it suffers from erratic organization. We find that the authors do a very good job of introducing the elements of innovation to a general business readership.
looking for breakthroughs.......2005-03-01
As an inventor, I found this book useful. The authors explore the theme of radical innovation. Of the creating of breakthrough inventions that can in turn create new markets and experiences. The book cites many examples. Perhaps most notably that of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). As is well known to many in technology, PARC developed the seminal concepts of a mouse, icons and window based user interface. Though sadly Xerox benefitted not a whit from this.
A constant question in the book is how to discover those breakthroughs. Or, restated, how to devise an environment that can nuture such events and the people that bring them about. The authors assert that what they term "open innovation" can never lead to breakthroughs. However, truly original creativity is such a fragile and intangible thing that the book doesn't really offer a deterministic approach to finding and applying it. But perhaps no book can.
Book Description
The same elements that are necessary in any great adventure--a deep appreciation of the terrain, an intuitive sense of direction, and the courage to carry through--are also essential to the resolution of complex issues in organization and society, says McWhinney. In Paths of Change, Will McWhinney outlines a new foundation for theories of change, initiating a discipline of praxis using concepts from psychology, sociology, anthropology and new methods of working with ontological and narrative concepts to produce intentional changes in society. The components of his theory include: a map of four alternative realities, a guidance theory based on two great myths that have been used in many cultures over the past millennia, and the qualities required to deal courageously with the paradoxes of change and resolution efforts. He indicates the critical role of leaders and followers, and of the coevolution of cultures that must accompany efforts to resolve major issues. McWhinney builds on the proposition that the most frequently encountered sources of conflict are the very changes we make in attempts to resolve related issues. The illustrative cases used are mostly derived from organizational life--a rich variety of examples drawn from history, politics, and technology indicate the broad relevance and practicality of the ideas. The theoretical developments provide a base for exploring topics as different as selection of tools for problem solving, formation of cultures, and new logics of transformative processes. As the theory emerges, it incorporates elements of action research, management and community development work, future studies, and aspects of system thinking that borrow from the human sciences. This synthesis is a new vessel within which to develop a positive human science of action for the 21st century.

A briljant meta-model.......2006-02-25
This book contains a meta-model that is applicable to almost everything. It gives the reader an opportunity to check if he has looked at all points of view that are possible.
"...profoundly influenced my professional practice...".......1999-11-29
This book breaks new ground and will impact many organization development theory and practice areas, such as cognitive styles, change management, and leadership for many years to come. McWhinney begins by introducing the reader to a model of "reality archetypes" that he claims underlie all individual and collective thinking processes in Western society. The four realities remind one of Jungian types, but differ in that these are more like worldviews than personalities.
On one level, by using an instrument called "The Reality Inventory," one can learn how his/her personal worldview maps over McWhinney's model. This is useful for understanding how interpersonal conflicts are often, in essence, not as much fueled by divergent issues and interests, but by different mental models that influence how people define issues and communicate their interests. How often have we intervened in a conflict, only to discover that what appears to be a "real" difference over a substantive issues, turns out to be a battle over semantics? However, lest we be tempted to jump to "Men are from Mars..." pop psychological conclusions, it's important to note that McWhinney's approach goes any beyond any static "styles" theory.
The reality model serves as a basis for new insight into the dynamic nature of change. Most of us know that when a major organizational change conflicts with existing organizational culture, the culture most often prevails and the change effort dies. This happens when change agents and their sponsors fail to understand that most planned change interventions require an organization to move into a new collective reality (or mental model, worldview, frame of reference, etc.). The symptom we call "resistance" develops as underlying conflicts between old and new worldviews surface. McWhinney describes six modes of change to help organizations traverse the "territory" of the reality map. Interestingly, these also connote six leadership styles.
A short review doesn't do McWhinney's ideas justice. Repeated readings will yield new insights. I also highly recommend the companion volume, "Creating Paths of Change," especially for practitioners. Suffice it to say that this material has profoundly influenced my professional practice, as well as my personal life.

Inadequate Treatment.......2005-07-06
'Advances in Agronomy, Volume 73', left me bewildered. Nowhere in the text did I find reference to the well-researched fact that those who practice agronomy, and who have been convicted of it, are usually recidivists who can never be rehabilitated. So therefore, how has the topic been advanced? Society should be protected from agronomists and their vile deeds. I might sound harsh, but I say that all agronomists should be locked up for life and rendered hormonally inert through the administration of impulse-destroying chemicals.

Civilization and Its Discontents

Book Description
In this monumental intellectual biography, Frank Sulloway demonstrates that Freud always remained, despite his denials, a biologist of the mind; and, indeed, that his most creative inspirations derived significantly from biology. Sulloway analyzes the political aspects of the complex myth of Freud as psychoanalytic hero as it served to consolidate the analytic movement. This is a revolutionary reassessment of Freud and psychoanalysis.
Customer Reviews:
well written and researched.......2000-03-25
I found this to be a very well written and researched bookwith extensive documentation to support the author's work. This isnot a Freud bashing book in the Fredrick Crewes model at all. I found it to be more of a historical documentation of the development of and influence's on Freud's theories. It discusses in more detail than I have seen elsewhere how Fliess (among many others) influenced Freud's thinking. The only reason I can surmise someone would react negatively to this book is if they cannot tolerate the realization that Freud was not working in a vacuum and many of his ideas were not unique to him (such as infantile sexuality) although his theories were more comprehensive and extensive in their scope. For anyone interested in the history of psychiatry, psychoanalysis and Freud, I highly recommend this book. END

Archaic Information.......2007-02-12
I purchased this book for my High School aged son to read and use to help his overall speed in tennis. It's like going back in a time capsual...it may have been cutting-edge 2 or 3 decades ago but it's so old it isn't even readable. It has found a place on a stack with other books that didn't pan out. No teenager on earth would read it.
Acquiring Proper Tennis Movement - Moving faster therefore!!.......2001-05-28
Another good piece of work from the former Chief Trainer of the German Tennis Federation. Richard is still very much active in research for tennis - in all aspects of the game. Currently, a much sought after speaker at the International Tennis Federation's seminars worldwide, this new work by him provides greater practical knowledge to be added for speed around/across the tennis court, as distinct from pure speed down a 100 metre track. Covered topics include enhancing innate speed, power in speed, endurance etc. Coaches of all levels of skill will definitely find something useful in this new book. I know I have, besides the hundreds of coaches in Europe and the Americas applying it on court at this moment when you are reading this review.
Speed Training for Tennis.......2000-11-28
The best book of this type on the market. The high level. Better for highly educated coaches.
Book Description
Aspiring writers learn how to avoid frauds and unsavory deals in this handbook for getting published. Sections on writing contests teach writers how to determine which contests are useless; other sections offer tips on avoiding costly conferences and shady seminars. A special focus on copyright ensures that writers protect their work from schemers who want to use creativity without paying for it. Appendices include sample publishing, agent, and manager contracts.

The Street Smart Writer.......2007-06-29
This book covers many aspects of writing, such as copyright, writing contests, agents, contracts, writing courses, how to keep out of legal trouble with your writing, what to do if you've sold something to an editor who won't pay up and much more. It is a tool to help a writer make it through the hazards of writing and the many pitfalls that wait for the unwary. The book also includes sample contracts for you to check out. It's a great reference book for every writer to have. I keep it handy where I can use it all the time.
Author of "To Catch a Kitten".......2007-05-23
A great book for a new author! I found this book very informative, enlightening but scary, realizing all the mistakes I have already made- myself but acknowledging some of the good decisions I've made as well. Nevertheless, it's better to know at the beginning of my journey than much later. If only I had read this book first! Thanks for the much needed info.
The Perfect Mix of Personal Stories and How To Information.......2007-02-20
Jenna Glatzer and lawyer Daniel Steven have combined forces in THE STREET SMART WRITER and given any writer a valuable resource.
Too many writers have gone innocently down the wrong path with a scam literary agent or publishing house and lived to regret their choice. Follow the wise counsel in these pages and you will protect yourself from disappointment and you will save yourself a lot of money and grief.
Excellent Words of Wisdom.......2006-11-02
While the entire book is fantastic, and offers an insider's look into the world of freelance writing and authoring books, I have to say I found Chapter 5: Trouble Spots In Book Contracts to be the best part of the book. It delves into trouble areas that can hurt the author, and how to maneuver around them. Finally, the appendix of forms is priceless: sample literary agent agreement, interview release form, permissions agreement, contributor's agreement, trade publishing agreement, and film option agreement.
Teaches Readers/Writers to Read Between the Lines.......2006-06-27
"We want to believe that people have good intentions."
If you're not familiar with Jenna Glatzer then you really need this book because you're obviously not as internet/writer savvy as you need to be. Jenna is the owner of AbsoluteWrite.com, a writer friendly site. She's also the author of Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer and one of my favourites, Outwitting Writer's Block. Not only does she write for writers but the last year she wrote an authorized biography for Celine Dion: For Keeps. This working writer has a knack for sharing her experience with others. In this publication she has joined forces with Daniel Steven, a writer and publishing lawyer.
This is definitely a must-have guide for writers, especially the writer who dabbles in many areas. It's not only about what to avoid but doing it better. The Street-Smart Writer is divided into 17 chapters with an appendix of additional forms tacked on the end. Chapter breakdown:
1 - Agents & Managers (spotting sharks)
2 - Agents & Managers (finding a good one)
3 - Paying to Publish (vanity and subsidy presses)
4 - What to do if you've been screwed
5 - Trouble Spots in Book Contracts
6 - After Publication Rip-offs for Book Authors
7 - Vanity Poetry Contests
8 - Deceptive Contests for Novelists, Short Story Writers, Screen writers & others
9 - Crash Course in Copyright
10 - Special Screw-over for Screenwriters
11 - Monstrous Magazines & E-zines
12 - Dealing with Deadbeats
13 - Costly Courses & Shady Seminars
14 - How to Know When They're really using You
15 - Spotting False Credentials
16 - Protecting Yourself from Threats & Lawsuits
17 - "They Stole My Idea!" and other things not to worry about.
One of the things I appreciated about the Street-Smart Writer was its ability to explain instead of tell. Like the "big bucks" you make at vanity presses: -Let's say you managed to sell a hundred copies through bookstores. How much would you earn on a 250-page paperback book printed as cheaply as possible with a retail price of $20? About $240. Which means if you paid a print-on-demand company to publish your book and didn't even spend a dime to have it edited or promoted, you still wouldn't even have recouped your initial investment, let alone made any profit from your hard work.- To finish off Street-Smart provides a commercial publisher arrangement for you to compare. An eye opener for anyone thinking they can make big(ger) bucks by doing it themselves.
Many sample letters appear throughout and to help you decipher any forms the appendix provides examples of: Literary Agent Agreement, Interview Release, Permissions Agreement, Contributors Agreement, Trade Publishing Agreement, Film Option & Literary Purchase Agreement. These are not meant to be substitute agreements but to give you some background information when you're cool and collected because you know your stomach is going to be in knots when the real thing comes.
There's so much in this book for the eclectic writer. But any writer can learn from all these areas and apply it to their own work. Jenna Glatzer's usual comedic style, logic and blunt truth delivers the cold hard facts about the writing world. In layman's terms she explains away the idiots of the industry's scam tactics by teaching readers how to read between the lines. It's not meant to be a scare tactic but to make you an informed writer and it accomplishes its task. Reviewed by M. E. Wood.

...Was nudity all you guys bothered to pay close attention to?.......2006-01-28
Alright, I'm not trying to put you guys down or anything. I know you're just thinking about whats best for young viewers and such, but thats all you guys pretty much talked about in your reviews. Personally when I read your reviews before checking out this book, I thought Beast Boy and Star where taking a bath or something. Of course I was wrong.
Now heres my review:
If you guys read my review on "Teen Titans GO! vo. 1" than you can expect some more of the same in this review. Again the story is made of 5 chapters. Four in which are just random, but the last has a continuing plot.
Chapter 1: Storm
The Titans get word that their citys being torn up. When they go to find out what the problem is, they learn that the part of the city has become the battle ground of their new recent allys, Thunder and Lighting. Why the two are fighting is the real problem that has to be solved.
Chapter 2: How You Play the Game
Blackfire makes her return, but with no anger or threats. All she wants is to see who the better flyer/racer is between herself and Starfire. Starfire excepts the challange, but the rest of the Titans don't trust her. The rest of the team keep their eyes on the race, but things start getting strange when Blackfire begins to take detours in the race, and by no means to cheat.
Chapter 3: Naked City
Ahh...the emfamous naked chapter.
After taking down a series of robots, the Titans take time to hear the cries of fandom when a French man named D.D Ammo comes and askes for a faver of the Titans (or more of Star really). You see, he's a cloths designer and askes if they would be so kind to become spokesmodels and wear his cloths. Beast Boy decides to answer for her and accepts the offer however only BB and Star are the ones to wear them as the other Titans decline. As expected, D.D's cloths become popular in no time but that turns out to be bad news later on.
***Note, to get the naked thing out of the way, heres how it ends. Be warned of spoilers.***
*

*************************************************************
It turns out D.D was just a desguise. The real man behind this is the out of his head old man who wants to stay young, Mad Mod.
Within the clothing hides the power to hypnotize those wearing them. Now all of Jump City, and their two friends, are the Titans enemys and they have to stop them in any way they can.
They eventually find a way to stop those being controlled that involves sound waves and stuff. The molecules of the fabric are torn apart but in turn of doing that, the clothing itself is destroyed.
Don't fret, as you all have heard nothing is shown. Weither something "bad" is being covered by someones hands, or blocked by heads or something, we know they are nude. However in case you missed what I said, NOTHING WAS SHOWN. Not even a shot of the rear (I'm sure your aware that that part of the body has been shown on tv, on both adult and children shows).
They weren't trying to be disgusting, they where going for humor. Beast Boy's expression when he finds out he's in the nude is halarious, but its beaten by the next few panals. Starfire is ready to pound in Mod, but all Raven has to say is "You really ought to wait for a costume Starfire....Otherwise the boys won't be able to help it."
And to all of you with dirty minds reading this, it just showed Cyborg and Robin holding back loads of laughter and Starfire, bless her innocent heart, is clueless and doesn't get it. Am I the only one finding this stuff funny?

end spoilers
Chapter 4: War Machine
Gizmo has some new inventions in store for the Titans so Cyborg and an old friend think of their own inventions to construct and take him on with.
Chapter 5: Finding Nero
Readings of a sea monster atracts the attention of the Titans and so they go after it. But everytime they get a chance to stop it, Aqualad stops them. Whys he doing this? Answers await in the next book. *More Starfire/Raven loving Aqualad momments ahead*
I had fun with these storys and most of the time the arts pretty good (the only chapter art I didn't care for was chapter 3), some plots dragged, but some where pretty entertaining.
If you liked the first, give this a look at.
Remember, don't knock anything just because someones naked in it :D.
Thanks for your time.
It'd be Okay if..........2005-08-10
This comic book would be okay if they had skiped the one called "Naked City", or at least change it around. What I didn't like about it was that Beastboy and Starfire where nude in it. And Raven looked so much diffrent. This was sooo not made by the producer of Teen Titans!
I was surprised..........2005-04-11
Let me begin by letting you know I'm a mom, not a young boy. I bought this book for my son, who owns volume one. We've read volume one together, we liked it and so I went ahead and bought this one.
The book is sturdy, well drawn and has O.k. dialogue and story lines (typical comic book stuff). I thought it was just like the t.v. cartoon.
I was surprised and a little disappointed that in one of the stories (the book has a few short stories not one long one) it showed a few people totally undressed. The pictures weren't completely revealing; the characters all used their hands to cover up, or were covered by something else in the foreground, but a lot of flesh was shown. I'd say a bit more than in most bathing suits. I'm sure plenty of parents wouldn't think it was a big deal, but as a somewhat conservative parent, I would've skipped this volume had I known.
