true value within a mystery.......2006-01-21
a friendly and ever-illuminating exploration of the founding tenets for success within a special company. From the tenets explored, one gleans practical and proven methods that can be employed within a variety of organizations.
The message is resoundingly clear: though the methods are not complex, it is crucial that organizational members consistently apply them (methods) on the road to success. Success will follow. There is a lot of competition out there, so DO IT RIGHT!
The author writes with a flair for personal stories, which makes the message easily digestible and subsequently applicable. He endears us to the characters in the story. I call it a story because it evokes a mystery: who was Brennan Frederick Newell, 1974-2000; how did he possess such wisdom at a relatively young age; and what company is Diamond?
After reading such an intriguing book that offers so many valuable tips AND evokes such mystery, the reader feels compelled to hire Bud Bilanich as the consultant for her/his company and ask him all the relevant questions. Tip to CEO's out there: read the book and then hire Bud to come out and revamp your company. Ask him the aforementioned questions for me and e-mail me the answers!!!
Bravo to Mr. Bilanich for offering us a highly readable and engaging book that imparts truly valuable lessons. Best book I've read from this publisher.
Simple, straightforward and effective.......2004-03-10
Doctor B has done it again! This is the third of his books that I've read. In each one, he has demonstrated a complete and thorough understanding of his subject, boiled the concepts down to the core ideas and presented those ideas in an easy to understand (and easy to enact)manner. His common sense approach, both in his books and in person, plays well in all settings, from corporate headquarters to the factory floor. And more importantly, it drives business results!
Great advice for even the smallest company!.......2002-11-08
Mr. Bilanich's book says it simply and with useful tools for any size organization. Not the latest fad, just practical and easily incorporated 'secrets' that are the fundamental basics of achieving a high performing organization.
4 secrets of high performing organizations:Beyond the flavor.......2002-11-02
This book was easy to ready yet full of very good suggestions that can be used on a daily basis. I found myself trying his methods before even finishing the book! It's concise, practical, and a sensible approach to the many issues that face us in our daily business lives. I would recommend it to any manager that wants to increase productivity and motivation with their staff.
"Learn From Someone Who's Actually Been There".......2002-10-08
I have known Bud for 20 years and we have worked on projects together, discussing why things worked and why they didn't. This book shows that he's been tracking his own organizational learning and is making that body of knowledge available for others to shorten their own learning curves. If you are a manager, consultant, or trainer, I'd take advantage of the real-life experience reflected in this book. It's an easy way for you and your people to gain a personal edge on high performance through a relaxed, storytelling approach; and, all of the situations will look and feel very familiar to managers and supervisors everywhere.

Book Description
Offering a fresh analysis of how Freud practiced psychoanalysis which has profound implications for practice today, the authors draw from the existing full-length accounts written by patients who were treated by Freud in the 1920s and 1930s. Presented together for the first time as detailed case studies, these vivid, intimate biographies of the analytic process reveal an unexpected Freud. Quite different from the current stereotype of the Freudian analyst, Freud is depicted as an organized, persistent, personally engaged, and expressive clinician. Demonstrating how Freud s use of free association allowed him to be spontaneous and personal, the authors also describe the consequences of the current reliance on transference and resistance analysis as the engine of treatment. Bound to stir controversy, they contend that by subordinating the entirety of their clinical behavior to protecting the transference, contemporary clinicians are indeed doing psychoanalysis, but the work they are doing is not Freudian.

Book Description
Outdoor leadership-it's more than just knowing which trail to take or how to read a map. Whether out on a day trip or a backcountry expedition, the successful outdoor leader takes on many roles at once-skilled communicator, expert decision maker, thorough planner-and must be as prepared as possible for any and every situation.
In this essential new handbook, author Alex Kosseff fuses his own extensive leadership experience with that of acclaimed experts as he details the critical skills and concepts every outdoor leader needs to know. Building on the basic foundations of leadership, Kosseff explores such critical topics as effective decision-making, group dynamics, risk management, awareness and attitude, environmental impact, and more. Packed with expert advice, practical know-how, and real-life experiences, AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership is a must-read for anyone committed to becoming a safe and effective leader, whether an aspiring guide, an educator, a club leader, or an adventurous parent.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me be a better leader.......2004-05-13
I've been working as an outdoor leader and whitewater guide for three years, first with kids on summer programs and currently with a variety of age groups year-round. This book helped me to evaluate the way I work with trip participants and co-workers. It opened my eyes to new ideas and has greatly expanded the bad of tricks I use in the field. I appreciated the safety-first focus and the author's friendly tone. Also, the stories, some of which are classics, made the book entertaining. It is unfortunate I didn't read this book a couple of years ago when I was launching into this line of work. If you don't have a lot of education in this field (I was a biology major) but you're involved in some outdoor leadership role this book can be a great help to you. Personally I'm loaning it to all the guides I work with.
Emphasizing necessary qualities in leadership and character.......2003-10-19
Alex Kosseff's AMC Guide To Outdoor Leadership is a solidly presented and thoroughly "user friendly", 280-page instructional guide to being a competent leader for outdoor excursions, up to and including activities with the potential to be life-threatening. Emphasizing necessary qualities in leadership and character, and taking into awareness the importance of group cohesion, balanced decision-making, keeping a cool head in a crisis and more, the AMC Guide To Outdoor Leadership is an excellent interpersonal guide offering principles applicable to all walks of life, not just the walks through a wilderness.
A comprehensive and readable guide.......2003-07-06
Alex Kosseff has written a fine guide to all aspects of outdoor leadership, with outstanding sections on risk management and the consensus method of decision-making. An important purchase for trip leaders whether new or experienced and definitely worth the wait caused by the delay in publication.
Enriching outdoor adventure.......2003-04-19
Alex Kosseff's Outdoor Leadership is a thoughtful and thorough review of the leadership qualities required for safe, fullfilling outdoor adventure. The book presents a balanced emphasis on the leader's need for hard or technical skills and soft skills such as dealing with group dynamics and caring for the participants. I read this book from the view of a parent who led his family on many wonderful wilderness adventures for which we were not completely prepared and found innumerable ideas that would have made the trips even more rewarding. Kosseff's use of stories from his own experiences and those of others tranforms a potentially dry subject into thoroughly enjoyable reading. The stories clearly illustrate the major points of the book.
Outdoor Leadership has a wealth of knowledge that will benefit an audience from adventuresome parents to professional guides.
Book Description
Edgar award nominee James N. Frey, author of the internationally best-selling books on the craft of writing, How to Write a Damn Good Novel, How to Write a Damn Good Novel II: Advanced Techniques, and The Key: How to Write Damn Good Fiction Using the Power of Myth, has now written what is certain to become the standard "how to" book for mystery writing, How to Write a Damn Good Mystery.Frey urges writers to aim high-not to try to write a good-enough-to-get-published mystery, but a damn good mystery. A damn good mystery is first a dramatic novel, Frey insists-a dramatic novel with living, breathing characters-and he shows his readers how to create a living, breathing, believable character who will be clever and resourceful, willful and resolute, and will be what Frey calls "the author of the plot behind the plot."Frey then shows, in his well-known, entertaining, and accessible (and often humorous) style , how the characters-the entire ensemble, including the murderer, the detective, the authorities, the victims, the suspects, the witnesses and the bystanders-create a complete and coherent world.Exploring both the on-stage action and the behind-the-scenes intrigue, Frey shows prospective writers how to build a fleshed-out, believable, and logical world. He shows them exactly which parts of that world show up in the pages of a damn good mystery-and which parts are held back just long enough to keep the reader guessing. This is an indispensable step-by-step guide for anyone who's ever dreamed of writing a damn good mystery.
Customer Reviews:
How to do a "Who Did It".......2007-07-11
For any avid mystery reader and frustrated mystery writer like me, this book is a treat. It analyzes the structure and content of mysteries in an entertaining and informative manner. The author teaches writing courses and knows how to explain his ideas clearly and simply. It is easy to imagine him performing in front of his students, mixing humor with sound advice. The only doubt I have in recommending this book is that after reading it, a mystery reader will always be aware of how the author of the mystery uses the formulas detailed in the book and this might prove distracting. Kind of like finding out how a magic trick is accomplished, thus losing the magic and being left with only the trick. Certainly for an aspiring mystery writer the book is perfect.
Hmmm.......2007-07-06
It's too bad Frey wastes all of his bluster and energy on this stuff instead of writing real books.
A great guide for a mystery author to follow.......2007-05-16
I bought this book when it came out, based on the strength of Frey's previous guide "How to write a damn good novel" and I was not disappointed. Despite the similar titles, this book focuses in on the salient things particular to the mystery genre. He touches on several subjects, ranging from the four pillars of mystery to how to become intimate with a murderer to how to craft strong endlines for each of your chapters. The book echoes his previous works, but that in no way detracts from all the new stuff he presents. It is a good read, and I found it extremely helpful to my writing.
If you want to write a mystery novel, buy this book, and read it.
King of the How-tos.......2007-05-04
I have been writing for 28 years and I admit I'm not God, but after reading over 300 writing books, most of them I own, I can unequivocally tell you that this one is tops!
Please read it. It anwers all your questions and shows you exactly what to do then what to do next.
If you don't find this book helpful, send it to me and I'll save it for you until you are serious about your work.
It also works up an exciting novel to show you how it's done, and will fire you up while entertaining you.
Joan of Art
A Practical Guide.......2007-03-31
I really liked this book. You read right along with the author as he creates a mystery novel, step by step. He teaches you how to create characters with depth by writing a detailed background and having your characters write a journal. He starts with the murderer, the plot behind the plot, then takes you on to your hero/detective and each of your other characters. You learn to write a plot by using a stepsheet. I especially found helpful the fact that you write a stepsheet for what the reader sees and what the reader does not see (what is happening offstage). You learn about the five act design in which a mystery novel is divided. The author then gives helpful pointers in writing good prose, writing the mystery scene, choosing viewpoint, the final steps in rewriting, and then some words on marketing your novel. I found this book enjoyable to read and very helpful in writing a mystery or any novel. It's one of the best "How to Write" books I've read because it's so practical in how it teaches you to write a mystery novel. It would be a great resource in any writer's library.
Book Description
A riveting day-by-day account of the 2004 Tour de France "filled with expert detail and rich with history, as Wilcockson knows the Tour as well as any journalist alive." -ESPN.com
Taking place over twenty-three days in July and across more than 2,100 miles of smooth blacktop, rough cobblestones, and punishing mountain terrain, the Tour de France is the most grueling sports event in the world. And in 2004, five-time champion Lance Armstrong set out to achieve what no other cyclist in the 100-year history of the race had ever done: win a sixth Tour de France.
Armstrong had four serious challengers who wanted nothing more than to deny the man the French call Le Boss from achieving his goal. The major threat among them was the only other former Tour de France champion in last year's race, Germany's Jan Ullrich- The Kaiser. But when the race was over, Lance Armstrong once again wore the yellow jersey of victory.
"With unabashed ease Wilcockson chronicles Lance Armstrong's unprecedented sixth straight victory.... Scandals and intense rivalries are also a part of the Tour's appeal, and Wilcockson weaves them all together in an entertaining account of the race- 20 stages, and 2,107 miles of madness and magic." -Sports Illustrated
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-10-17
It seems my original review contravened the Conditions of Use. Too strong and then some I suppose.
Suffice it to say, I found 23 DAYS disappointing (an understatement). In short, and shorn of my stronger and more strongly-expressed opinions, if you read Lance's BIKE and Daniel Coyle's LANCE ARMSTRONG'S WAR you'll go farther and deeper than offered in 23 DAYS. You will leave the BIKE+WAR reading experience far more informed and more involved in the inner workings of professional cycling.
Dr. Kirtland Peterson
Inspirational.......2007-09-18
If you followed Lance's incredible seven Tour de France victories than this book is a good compliment to what you saw. If you never watched any of it read this book anyway to better understand the significance of such an accomplishment. Having read several other books about Lance ArmstrongIt's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to LifeEvery Second Counts and the Tour de FranceFrom Lance to Landis: Inside the American Doping Controversy at the Tour de FranceI found this authors take different but a compliment to the Lance Armstrong saga. It is hard to capture the sheer magic and intensity of the Tour de France but this book does a good job of going behind the scenes and recreating the historical event. The interviews and personal touches author John Wilcockson gives to the book brings the event to life, especially if you don't watch the tour. The day by day account was pretty interesting with all kinds of information about waht goes on during a stage. One of the things I found very interesting was Wilcockson's ability to tie the contemporary race in with the historical events of the past. With nearly every chapter he gives an anecdote about the stage from the tour's storied past; the colorful stories were a very cool touch indeed. He even gets into the plaque of professional cycling, doping, in all it's ugly manifestations. He even brings Lance under the microscope by addressing his accusers allegations in the book and Lance's rebuttal. In the end it was a great ride again reliving one of the most courageous and difficult accomplishments we have ever witnessed in sport. Recommended for cycling enthusiasts everywhere.
Solid.......2007-03-18
The author weaves a lot of different story lines and angles into one very solid narrative. The pictures by Graham Watson are always outstanding. His pictures are what took this book from a 4 star to a 5 star book
A good counter point to this book is the work done Daniel Coyle called Lance Armstrong's War
Care to join for a ride.......2007-01-19
This book is soo good, that it made me want to go for a long, long ride.
Very good historical perspective.......2006-12-31
I've read almost all of the books on US Postal and Lance's reign as the 7-time Tour champ: Lance's 2 books, Daniel Coyle's masterful portrait of the champ, Matthew Berry's "Inside the Postal Bus", Samuel Abt's collections of cycling columns, and many others. The thing that stands out about this particular book, John Wilcockson's reflection on the 2004 Tour, is the historical perspective the author brings. Wilcockson has been covering the Tour since the mid-1960s, and that experience shows when he draws parallels between various events in the 2004 Tour and similar episodes in history. While I didn't find many new nuggets of information about Lance or the Postal team from this book, I did gain a much better appreciation for the history of the Tour and some of its past champions: Coppi, Merckxx, Hinault, et al. Wilcockson's writing is a welcome addition to the shelf of any serious cycling fan.
