Book Description
In Common Ground, Gary Okihiro uses the experiences of Asian Americans to reconfigure the ways in which American history can be understood. He examines a set of binaries--East and West, black and white, man and woman, heterosexual and homosexual--that have structured the telling of our nation's history and shaped our ideas of citizenship since the late nineteenth century. Okihiro not only exposes the artifice of these binaries but also offers a less rigid and more embracing set of stories on which to ground a national history. Influenced by European hierarchical thinking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Anglo Americans increasingly categorized other newcomers to the United States. Binaries formed in the American imagination, creating a sense of coherence among white citizens during times of rapid and far-reaching social change. Within each binary, however, Asian Americans have proven disruptive: they cannot be fully described as either Eastern or Western; they challenge the racial categories of black and white; and within the gender and sexual binaries of man and woman, straight and gay, they have been repeatedly positioned as neither nor.
Okihiro analyzes how groups of people and numerous major events in American history have generally been depicted, and then offers alternative representations from an Asian-American viewpoint--one that reveals the ways in which binaries have contributed toward simplifying, excluding, and denying differences and convergences. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, from the Chicago Exposition of 1898 to The Wizard of Oz, this book is a provocative response to current debates over immigration and race, multiculturalism and globalization, and questions concerning the nature of America and its peoples. The ideal foil to conventional surveys of American history, Common Ground asks its readers to reimagine our past free of binaries and open to diversity and social justice.

In today's highly fluid business environment, for disparate business units to work together smoothly is increasingly becoming a critical component of long-term success. Andrew Campbell and Michael Goold understand this, and in The Collaborative Enterprise, the two examine "how synergy happens, why it doesn't happen, and what managers can do about it." Using real-world examples, they first look at the difficulties inherent in such partnerships and propose solutions from three different perspectives: the parent manager, the business-unit manager, and the researcher. "Collaborative management can be a major source of advantage," they caution in conclusion. "But, for the vast majority of companies it is not just a nice ambition, it is a competitive necessity." --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The world's foremost authorities on multibusiness strategy show how to overcome barriers to synergy and achieve real collaboration across the company
In The Collaborative Enterprise, international strategy gurus Andrew Campbell and Michael Goold tackle the thorny issue of synergy-touted by companies large and small as the holy grail that will improve corporate performance. The authors argue, however, that synergies often fail because of poor quality thinking at the executive level. Using examples of success and failure from a wide variety of industries around the world, the authors offer an incisive and highly practical approach to overcoming barriers to synergy, evaluating opportunities within the company, establishing appropriate roles for corporate headquarters and business units, and fostering a collaborative environment at all levels of the organization.
Customer Reviews:
Worth Mulling Over.......2001-02-25
This is not a book that calls for underlining and highlighting, but it definitely has value as a basis for reflecting on various aspects of collaboration, and the failure of collaboration, within enterprises.
The book is written strictly from the perspective of people and perceptions. It does not have a technical or a financial side and this was disappointing. It would have been more useful to have a book that fully integrated human, technical, and financial success stories and failure stories to present an integrated picture of collaborative work principles in a global economy using the Internet as the backbone for collaborative work.
The book is well-written, the figures are useful, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to sit quietly on an airplane and think about the authors' subtitle: why links between business units often fail, and how to make them work.

Book Description
Landscapes are characterized by a wide variation, both spatially and temporally, of tolerance and response to natural processes and anthropogenic stress. These tolerances and responses can be analyzed through individual landscape parameters, such as soils, vegetation, water, etc., or holistically through ecosystem or watershed studies. However, such approaches are both time consuming and costly. Soil erosion and landscape evolution modeling provide a simulation environment in which both the short- and long-term consequences of land-use activities and alternative land use strategies can be compared and evaluated. Such models provide the foundation for the development of land management decision support systems.
Landscape Erosion and Evolution Modeling is a state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary volume addressing the broad theme of soil erosion and landscape evolution modeling from different philosophical and technical approaches, ranging from those developed from considerations of first-principle soil/water physics and mechanics to those developed empirically according to sets of behavioral or empirical rules deriving from field observations and measurements. The validation and calibration of models through field studies is also included.
This volume will be essential reading for researchers in earth, environmental and ecosystem sciences, hydrology, civil engineering, forestry, soil science, agriculture and climate change studies. In addition, it will have direct relevance to the public and private land management communities.

Customer Reviews:
Not a good choice.......2007-02-16
I don't know if it's the "worst ever", but it contains serious errors. Some are possibly typos, but the majority are wrong math, wrong analysis or--worst of all--wrong concept. A disaster for the beginning student.
See for example the solutions to example Free-Response Questions 2(b) and 3(b) given on page 151.
Excellent book for a crash course or an extensive review.......2005-07-16
This book has everything that you would need to know from the test. It breaks down the topics into the B and C components. The free response practice tests closely resembles an easy AP test. About the multiple choice, there is no book on the market that can immitate the obscure AP test. From 2004 to present, there has been an official trend of elevating the multiple choice difficulty, while there is relatively no change in the free response.
Makes Physics a Cakewalk.......2005-04-11
I have been studying out of this book all year so far and it is the ONLY physics book I or anyone else will ever need. It takes from physics, any of the most complicated concepts, and turns them into elementary principles, easy to remember and easy to implement. Think AP physics may be a little too hard for you? Never fear, Centorino's book is here. Buy this book, you will not regret it.
Physics student.......2005-03-20
I found this book to be very reader-friendly and was of great help to me in not only the AP Physics Exam but also my college physics course.
Very successful.......2004-05-12
The book has helped me get a 5 on the AP physics B test, it's easy to understand like most Cliff's books and I recommend it to anybody. Use this for a higher grade on the test.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-06-28
Shadowland by Mag Cabot is one of the best adventure books I have read in a long time. Suze Simon can see and talk to the dead, but only long enough to help resolve their unfinished business. Her mother has just remarried and has forced Suze to move from New York to California. All Suze wants is a chance to start over, away from her freak reputation caused by her ghostly dealings. That is hard to do, however, when she comes across two ghosts within a week; Jesse, the hot, hundred-fifty-year-old haunting her bedroom, and Heather, the teen ghost who is out for revenge, and Suze just happens to be in her way.
Shadowland is a fantastic book full of witty dialogue, action, adventure, suspense, and a hint of romance. The story has enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing until the end. The suspense will keep them reading into the night anticipating what might happen next. Overall, this was a terrific book that will lead readers straight into the second.
The first book..........2007-05-27
The story is about a girl, suze who is a mediator between the living and the dead. She moves from new york to sunny california to live with her mother and new stepfather. At first it looks prosperous and suze thinks she can start anew [ghost free] but soon realizes there are ghosts everywhere. Now this book had both some good and bad qualities to it. Let me start with the good. The story was very in depth and the idea is great. But theres some bad points to this also. The characters seemed a little 2-dimensional and a tad stereotypical. There were the jocks, the geeks, ect. You dont really find out about suze's past that much which leaves some questions. Overall it was a good book but also a forgetful one.
seein the shadow in shadowland.......2007-02-08

Why not help kids out a little bit?.......2007-01-09
Meg Cabot's books are great... it wasn't my favorite series ever but hey, they were still good. But I'm not writing about the books. I'm writing about the search pages. Yahoo, Amazon, Google, etc. they haven't been giving the list of characters. I have a report due tomorrow, and I read the book months ago... ( the teacher gave us a due date & then changed it til after Christmas)... I can't remember what that girl's ghost's name is... I mean come on... would it kill you to give a list of the main characters!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr! O, & by the way... that isn't my real e-mail address. :-P
One of the BEST series to hook reluctant teen readers!.......2006-12-01
I'm a librarian at a school for kids grades 2-12, and the Mediator series has had an amazing effect on our middle school/high school readers. I love to hook our students on series--that way, they know what they'll be reading next.
Combining action, adventure, the supernatural, a little romance and mystery, and a strong female main character, this series has it all! I've always had a difficult time getting my male students to read books with female main characters, but this series has broken that rule as well. The 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series by Meg Cabot is a close second to this series and another great series for middle/high school students.
