Book Description
How can we resolve the debates between groups such as blacks, Latinos, gays, and women who demand that school curricula recognize their particular identities and others who insist that public education should infuse children with a common American identity? Educational philosopher Walter Feinberg here takes on the debate and suggests ways to promote both cultural and national identities.

I had to do a report on "Death of a Salesman," and this book was the biggest help! I found out all kinds of things, stuff even my teacher didn't know, and I got an A! Thank you David Galens and Lynn Spampinato--keep up the good work!

This book may be a little dry for those without interest in common property issues, but is perfect otherwise. Elinor Ostrom is at the top of her field.

I had to have this book for a class I took. I found it difficult to track. If you must buy it, look for it used.

Book Description
In An Unnatural Pursuit Simon Gray wrote an hilarious account of what it's like to be tortured, paranoid and a playwright. Here, in How's That For Telling 'Em, Fat Lady?, he takes on the United States - from coast to coast. The result is the funniest book ever written about the American theatre, a blackly comic portrait of the author and the grotesque characters he encounters on his travels.

Book Description
A photofacsimile edition of the only known surviving copy of the first quarto edition of the anonymous Elizabethan play, Common Conditions (1576). As the volume's brief introduction shows, this quarto is of outstanding scholarly interest for a number of reasons. The play itself is an important instance of the transition from the late medieval morality play toward the emergent early modern theatrical genres of comedy and romance. The surviving copy of the first quarto, now owned by the Elizabethan Club at Yale University, was long believed lost; it offers the only complete available text of the play. Furthermore, this quarto contains interesting annotations and revisions in an early modern hand, which are clearly visible in the facsimile. This volume will thus be of interest to students of early modern drama, of bibliography and of book ownership and reading.
Book Description
This is the state-of-the-art, international handbook for a field of inquiry that is still emergent and yet occupies a central position in contemporary management and organization theory. Mark Easterby-Smith and Marjorie Lyles have drawn together in their authoritative reference work original essays from the leading scholars in organizational learning and knowledge management around the world. Not least in importance is the linkage they make between these two adjacent areas: learning and knowledge are often debated separately despite their close relationship. In this volume leading scholars from the fields of organizational learning, the learning organization, knowledge management and organizational knowledge, examine the issues and debates, as well as the processes and management implications, that are key to each of these approaches. The resulting set of essays offers researchers and students an invaluable guide.Tracing the roots of learning and knowledge debates across the disciplines of economics, psychology, and social theory, and charting the key contributions scholars have made, this is a major, in-depth overview which all scholars of organizational learning and knowledge management will need on their shelves.

Book Description
What is the future of genetically modified (or transgenic) conifer plantations? The content of this edited volume
Landscapes, Genomics and Transgenic Conifers addresses this question directly - and indirectly - using language drawn from policy, forest history, genomics, metabolism, pollen dispersal and gene flow, landscape ecology, evolution, economics, technology transfer and regulatory oversight. Although the book takes its title from a Nicholas School Leadership forum held November 17-19, 2004 at Duke University, its
de novo contents move past the forum’s deliberations. The result is a trans-disciplinary book composed of 14 chapters written by a total of 31 authors working in North America, South America, Europe and Africa.
The book is written for policy experts, life scientists, government and business leaders, biotechnology writers and activists. Few decision-makers realize the unprecedented degree to which transgenic technology is now possible for forests on a commercial scale. Only a handful of the 550 living conifer species is used for commodity value and even fewer species are being developed for transgenic plantations. Transgenic field trials started within the last decade but no transgenic pine plantations exist in 2005. But emergence of transgenic forest trees is still so recent that dialogue about the pros and cons is confined to the scientific community. And dialogue must move out into the public domain.
So little opportunity remains for opening public dialogue. The pursuit of transgenic research for forest trees is principally corporate so novel forest tree phenotypes are created as a means to increase shareholder value for investor companies. And while potential benefits will accrue to shareholders, ecological risks for certain transgenic traits are likely to be shared due to long-distance gene flow and inadequate bioconfinement measures. So this is a question riddled with tension. Without public deliberation, we should expect alienation of several interest groups. Alienation will lead to heightened clashes in the public policy arena or even radical environmental action. But how to move dialogue on transgenic forests forward? One must re-frame the issues behind transgenic conifer plantations.
The goal of this volume is to provide content for public deliberations about the genetic composition of future forests. Its Section I is composed of provocative and opposing views on the question of transgenic conifer plantations. Sections II and III follow with research advances on relevant conifer genomics and ecology research, respectively. Section IV forecasts rates of technology adoption for different case studies. Finally, Section V compares the status of regulatory oversight of transgenic forest trees between Canada and the United States. But will the book fulfil its goal? The burden of the answer lies with its readers. Will readers act – or will transgenic forests be seen as too remote or simply too rural to bother with the angst of public deliberation?

Book Description
The third volume of the Handbook of Motivation and Cognition, like its acclaimed predecessors, presents timely, original work on the interface of motivation and cognition. Rather than looking at the self, affect, and goals as primarily intrapersonal variables, however, Volume 3 shifts its concern to the role of motivation and cognition in interpersonal and intergroup behavior. Reflecting an increasing awareness of the impact of intergroup strife in contemporary life, leading researchers and theorists of social relations discuss topics including how we use others to further evaluate the self; how the self affects our judgment of others; the role of sterotyping and prejudices; and how we evaluate and interact with ingroups and outgroups.
Customer Reviews:
covers interpersonal processes.......2000-04-02
The authors state, "In this volume, we have turned our concerns from looking within the individual to examining his or her focus on others." The book has three parts, covering self-evaluation, evaluation of others, and group dynamics.
The various authors in this book describe their own (and others') empirical research, propose models, and examine theories. It's a thick book -- 18 chapters and more than 600 pages. These aren't necessarily the most well-known or influential theories and projects (yet?) -- it's a smattering of particular interests, not a primer. Not an introductory book, by any means.
Book Description
Each easy-to-use "read and ride" workbook includes complete, illustrated directions, an arena map, a list of exercise benefits, necessary precautions, and a "Test Your Skills" section.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I was looking for.......2006-10-01
This book was completely useless to me. I was hoping for a book that would have interesting and varied arena exercises for young horses such as turns on the forehand and rear, spirals, backing two steps- forward two- back three- forward three, etc. Things to work on when you can't get out on a trail.
Instead, it is a simple book covering such basics as how to halt, how to walk, jog, lope. Apparently it is intended for someone who is entering a western pleasure class. Not what I was looking for.
Useless.......2005-05-28
This book is completely useless for someone learning western riding. It has detailed exercise description with no information about how to actually do them. For example, several pages are dedicated to walk-jog-walk exercises, with no description about how to get a horse to transition from a walk to a jog and from a jog to a walk.
For the circle exercises the advice it to "use your inside leg to activate the inside hind leg (I assume of the horse)" -- but HOW?
I learned nothing from this book and it was a complete waste of money.
Red Ribbon.......2000-09-19
I thought the book was good over all, it had good suggestions on things to do, but In the first Exercise the Halt it says " the halt should be square and balanced" So how do you accomplish that? I thought that half the lesson and been left out.
instructions.......2000-04-07
i found this book helpfull and easy to understand. it has the necessary instructions to get one on the way to western pleasure riding.
I loved this book!.......1998-12-22
If you have just begun western riding- like me, you will love this book. I had been riding English for 6 years, and found that western was a bit differant. This book helped me get my balance and courage. I really reccomemend this book!
Book Description
"Postmodernism" has become the buzzword of contemporary society. Yet it remains baffling in its variety of definitions, contexts and associations. Beginning Postmodernism aims to offer clear, accessible and step-by-step introductions to postmodernism across a wide range of subjects. It encourages readers to explore how the debates about postmodernism have emerged from basic philosophical and cultural ideas. With its emphasis firmly on "postmodernism in practice," the book contains exercises and questions designed to help readers understand and reflect upon a variety of positions in the following areas of contemporary culture: philosophy and cultural theory; architecture and concepts of space; visual art; sculpture and the design arts; popular culture and music; film, video and television culture; and the social sciences.
Customer Reviews:
And away we go.......2005-04-09
What isn't postmodernism? You may wonder this after reading this book. It's not modernism? It's not postpostmodernism? I don't know.
It's "Blade Runner". It's "Naked Lunch". It's Peter Handke's "Kaspar". It's "Gravity's Rainbow." So far, so good. But, unfortunately for me, postmodernism is also Deridda and Foucault, neither of whom I could make much sense of. And, with them and Baudrillard, I get the feeling that I could never read enough about history, politics, pyschology, culture, economics, art and literary criticism (not to mention architecture) to have any basis for evaluating postmodernist claims. It seems like postmodernist theorists opinionate widely and at a high level, making their claims impossible to verify. But maybe verification isn't postmodern. At any rate, it's beyond my little brain that would like to have some illusion of keeping track of things.
Perhaps postmodernism is characterized, among other things, by moving away from any simple sense that reality can be represented. Accepting fragmentation. In this book Woods shares a lot of ways to recognize postmodernism.
Where that leads, I don't know. Not to Kansas. This is a stimulating book. After you get into it some, you may wish it were less stimulating. How Woods knows as much as he does, I have no idea. He mentions Handke, although the index doesn't include Handke. The index doesn't include Warhol and I didn't find him in the main text. I would have thought Warhol was as postmodern as one could get, but I suppose Woods couldn't cover everyone. Just almost everyone. The bibiography is annotated and should be able to take you onto some good further journeys into postmodernism. It depends on how complicated you want to be. Artists seem to have a much better sense of postmodernism than philosophers. Perhaps postmodernism renders philosophy as we've known it obsolete? If so, then the "Philosophy of Andy Warhol" may point the way to what a postmodernist philosophy csn be.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Great List of Words.......2007-10-01
This book contains many lists of words in an organized way for helping writers choose the right phrase or word for transitioning thoughts in writing. An excellent resource.
A handy, easy-to-use daily reference.......2007-07-20
Transition words and phrases are one of the areas where writers often get into ruts -- but not after you add this handy little reference to your desk! The book contains word lists based on the content of the transition, which, along with a thumb-tab page design, makes it easy to find an alternative phrasing. And if you often write articles or other materials that present quotes from sources, the book is worth the price just for its list of substitutes for the word "said." I know this is a reference I will use daily.
a handy tool.......2006-01-23
I've used this guide since 1990, when I came across a copy in a Honolulu bookstore. How nice to see it's available through Amazon. I recommend it highly to other professional writers. Students will find it useful, too.
Enthusiastically recommended reference for writers........2002-03-29
A Writer's Guide To Transitional Words And Expressions by Victor Pellegrino is a very specific and highly useful reference for writers of all ages and skill levels, ranging from novelists to journalists. It is quite simply a collection of lists of English words and phrases. Each list is offered as an effective verbal transition mechanism for authors seeking the best phrase "To Indicate Time Order," "To Indicate a Sequence," "To Emphasize or Intensify," "To Substitute for 'Said'" and a dozen other lists. Perhaps most useful is A Writer's Guide To Transitional Words' unusual format layout, which makes an index tab for each list instantly visible upon opening to any page - which in turn makes finding the list one wants to consult a supremely quick and easy process. A Writer's Guide To Transitional Words is an enthusiastically recommended reference for professional writers of all walks, since the type of phrases it presents are not ones that are quite so easily gleaned from a common thesaurus. Also highly recommended is Victor Pellegrino's companion book A Writer's Guide To Using Eight Methods Of Transition.
Book Description
The dramatic public life of Diana, Princess of Wales was enacted against a backdrop of exciting foreign destinations.
These are inextricably linked to some of the most significant events in her own journey. Who can forget the lonely Princess at the Taj Mahal, the "War of the Waleses" in South Korea, the glamorous Diana, darling of Manhattan fundraisers, or the Queen of Hearts in an African refugee camp? These are just some of the unforgettable images revisited in Portraits of a Princess--Travels with Diana.
Patrick Jephson, Diana's private secretary for many years, gives his unique perspective of his time spent with the Princess. As the man who organized nearly all of her foreign travel and accompanied her on most of it, his viewpoint provides the book with a unique sense of authority.
For Portraits of a Princess Jephson reassembles the core team that worked with him on orchestrating Diana's worldwide crusade: the press secretary, the security chief and the Princess's personal assistant.
From this unmatched archive of experience came candid and entertaining anecdotes which add colour to fascinating behind-the-scenes details of the logistics of a royal superstar on tour: how the press coverage was organized and orchestrated, how the protocol experts were kept happy and how transport and security requirements were adapted to suit Diana's revolutionary royal style.
Other experts comment on the Princess's changing fashion tastes as her wardrobe evolved from the "Shy Di" of the joint tours to the confident glamour icon of Washington society balls or the hands-on charity leader in Africa.
Again and again, as we retrace the Princess's footstep, Jephson asks, "Did she make a difference?"
These striking portraits answer that question.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-01-19
The book contains several inaccurate informations on dates and places - which is surprinsing for an author who was previously the princess's private secretary. The so called never-seen-before photos are almost none, especially if you are a serious Diana fan.
A lovely way to remember her........2004-12-18
Diana, the Princess of Wales, is in the news again, with "new" videotaped interviews being shown on television seven years after her death in a car crash in a Paris tunnel. Although he isn't the one releasing the videotapes, Patrick Jephson, who served for six years as her first and only private secretary, has just released a new book, "Portraits of a Princess: Travels with Diana," in which he reveals fascinating behind-the-scenes details of what it was like to work for and travel with the princess. He combines his text with photos by award-winning royal photographer Kent Gavin.
The book includes 300 black and white or color photos of Diana, 150 of which were previously unpublished. There really are lots of photos here. The text is a sometimes emotional memoir written by someone who obviously admired her. The photos cover the range of her life in the public eye, from her first awkward experiments with fashion to her later, confident style, as she evolved "from Prince Charles's diffident consort into an independent, global force for good." The author shows Diana as "ambassador" to people all over the world, from monarchs and world leaders to the lowliest on the street and in hospitals. He describes her as "an unbeatable combination of fashion and compassion."
But Jephson had writing help: Kent Gavin wrote the foreword, titled "The View from Inside the Press Pen." There's a chapter called "Travels of a Royal Press Secretary" written by Dickie Arbiter. And there's another chapter on "Diana's Style" written by Ollie Picton-Jones, the fashion director for the Daily Mirror.
Jephson ends the book with an epilogue titled "Did She Make a Difference?" Obviously, he thinks she did. This is a lovely gift for those royal-watchers among us who still can't quite believe she's gone.
I was disappointed with this book........2004-12-06
Mr. Jephson's first book "Shadows of a Princess" was alternately praising of the Princess and then would tear her down so I was a bit wary of this book.
I think it takes a nicer tone about the Princess this time, describing trips she made to various countries (each with it's own chapter) with Jephson in tow. For your money I find that you'll be getting what amounts to a medium sized picture book with large print text. Kent Gavin's long introduction is actually the best, most informative part of the text, Jephson puts too much of himself in his writing. The pictures, well you've seen most of them before, they're still good anyway.
There are a couple of chapters at the end by other writers about traveling with Diana, also better than what Jephson himself wrote.
It isn't the worst book to own but I'd still prefer Rosalind Coward's book.
