          Book Description

In this book about deception and self-deception in and beyond the workplace, Stein portrays a psychological, ethical, cultural, and spiritual crisis that cannot be reduced to a business crisis. He shows how the language of economics shrouds loss, dread, rage, despair, and brutality in the guise of rational business necessity. For example, the act of ridding a workplace of thousands of people has become magically, euphemistically transformed into an impersonal, "bottom line" based exercise in "downsizing" and "outsourcing." As Stein explores the role of euphemism in the official doctrines and public claims of business, he also portrays how people experience the trauma of repeated mass layoffs, and the constant turmoil over shifting workroles and uncertain job security. Stein shows how the inner experience of downsizing, reengineering, and corporate medicine becomes part of a person's very essence and structure, not some unfortunate epiphenomenon. Three extensive case studies--one of downsizing (and related social engineering concepts), one of managed care, and another of the U.S. prairie's adaptation to life afterthe Oklahoma City bombing--provide the evidence for his interpretation. Stein supplements these with telling analyses of the concept of "spin," the popularity of Scott Adams' Dilbert cartoons, George Orwell's trenchant use of euphemism in his novels, and the web of words on which the Nazis' extermination program was spun. He shows how our priorities have created long-term massive social casualty for the sake of short-term gain. Further, he shows how a widespread cultural ethos of scarcity and callousness transcends the boundaries of workplace and business. He calls for an ethical awakening from our self-deceptions and the social harm we have done in the name of good business, and for direct, honest language that expresses our feelings and intentions.

4 out of 5 stars Shaking the Foundation of Modern Communication.......2000-12-22

My boss and I were sharing a discussion about "business-ese" and he handed me this book.

I'm so grateful that Stein took the time to research this dangerous business communication trend and describe it so eloquently.

Here is what I understand the premise to be: We, American business people, are so uncomfortable with the idea of conflict, and so underhanded in the worplace, that we have created our own deceptive vocabulary in order to manipulate others by subtely using language to bend them to our whims.

Stein sites many instances of words we use every day (e.g. "human resources," "downsizing," "restructuring") that use stealthy language to conceal their often negative meanings. In order to do this, he relies on both personal and achedemic experience and sites a number of excellent scientific and psychological resources.

This made me, a technical writer, listen to the words I use in everyday business discourse and think about the true meaning behind them. It has made me examine the things I write on a day-to-day basis for clarity and honesty.

I feel that I am a better writer and a better business person for having read this book, as it opened my eyes to many things I had been missing with regard to the way we communicate. This is a worthy read for anyone interested in the power of language and the psychology of business.

                  Book Description

Acknowledging the conventional wisdom that "winning isn't everything," this guide takes the position that winning is still eminently preferable to losing and lays out a step-by-step plan for succeeding at any of life's endeavors. In addition to sharing his personal experiences as a world-class tennis player and successful businessman, Allen Fox unveils the secrets of champions and reveals how everyone can put them to use to tilt the odds in their favor in a hilarious, take-no-prisoners tone. Factors contributing to success, such as common mental characteristics of winners and the role of intellect over emotion, as well as obstacles to victory such as the insidious and pervasive fear of failure and the unconscious struggle between ambition and fear, are also discussed.

This is not a book about tennis. As its title implies, it is all about winning...About why we don't always win and how we can increase our chances of winning. This author clearly articulates the reasons why we and those around us often unknowingly sabotage ourselves and the methods that we can all use to overcome these tendencies. He does this without the use of "physco babble" and you won't have to run to the dictionary every five minutes. The use of tennis as a segue into a business context is very effective, but you don't really need to know anything about tennis to "get" the point. The book is organized into sub-headings within each chapter. These sub-headings are frequently several paragraghs long in which he "nails" each point effectively. So the authors offers up his book in "bite size chunks", making it easy to read and digest. I've read many "self help" books, and this is among the very best.

2 out of 5 stars Same old same old.......2005-07-19

The book is not as much about tennis as I was lead to believe. There is a great deal of information about goal setting and the psychology of sports but I've heard or read it all before. It is nice to have a re-cap but in my opinion I would have rather been reading a summer novel.

5 out of 5 stars U like tennis and success story? You must read it........2005-03-28

As a coach of professional players and business man I could really relate to the relation that Allen Fox makes between tennis and today's business. If you read one book this year, make it this one. You will really enjoy it.

It's no wonder that Parrot in the Oven won the 1996 National Book Award for Young People's Fiction. Victor Martinez's lush, evocative prose leaps from the page, grabbing the reader by the throat right from the start. Not only do we witness Manuel Hernandez's coming of age, we feel every juicy moment of it: his ache for something just out of reach, the confusion of seeing his family with new eyes, the tickle and flood of awakening passion. It's difficult to portray transformation from the inside, but Martinez does so with grace and power.

                    Book Description

Dad believed people were like money. You could be a thousand-dollar person or a hundred-dollar person -- even a ten-, five-, or one-dollar person. Below that, everybody was just nickels and dimes. To my dad, we were pennies.

Fourteen-year-old Manny Hernandez wants to be more than just a penny. He wants to be a vato firme, the kind of guy people respect. But that's not easy when your father is abusive, your brother can't hold a job, and your mother scrubs the house as if she can wash her troubles away.

In Manny's neighborhood, the way to get respect is to be in a gang. But Manny's not sure that joining a gang is the solution. Because, after all, it's his life -- and he wants to be the one to decide what happens to it.

We think that this book is good for kids who are age 10 and up. Our favorite part of the book is when Victor has family problems with his mom and dad. This is one of the most important parts of the book that many students can relate to. The book is about a boy named Victor with family problems, and the reader learns about his entire life. The people who would like this book are people who enjoy real life stories, such as an autobiography.

3 out of 5 stars nothing spectacular in Parrot..........2007-05-03

I'm sorry but I really do not see what was special in Martinez' *Parrot in the Oven* that reaped him some awards. I did not see anything special about the story. However, I do agree that Martinez does have a way with words. They were eye-catching and made you wonder.

*Parrot in the Oven* is divided into chapters that each one focuses on one particular topic. While there is a subtle storyline throughout, the overall picture is blurred. There's that "missing link" that prevents you from knowing each characters in the book. Simply, there's no depth other than with Manny.

The book is told from Manny's perspectives. His dad has lost his job. He simply goes to the local pool hall and spends whatever money he can find and gets drunk. The mother is constantly cleaning the house. His older brother is never home and constantly has a new job. His older sister is secretive. His baby sister is simply a brat.

Manny tells his experiences with school, White people, boxing, and the gang. Most of all, he tells how these experiences impact his family and their world-view.

*Parrot in the Oven* is an alright book. It's nothing that you'd go around and recommend this book to friends. Just simply ok. The only best thing is Martinez' ways with words.

                    2 out of 5 stars Lacking Plot.......2007-02-15

Manuel is fourteen years old and living close to the Mexican border. He is Mexican-American himself. His life is full of conflicts, from his father who is alcoholic and abusive and can't seem to keep a job, to his passive mother who lets herself be scared and abused, to his three siblings.

This books is about Manuel's struggle to find himself and to figure out his life. It takes the reader on a journey through about a year in Manuel's life, and we get to see the things he interacts with daily, from his family situation to the bullies who live on his street, to the other people who surround him. Even though he sometimes has problems, like when he is invited to a party full of all white kids and things start to go bad, Manuel always manages to keep his head on his shoulders and get through things okay. Even though his family is dysfunctional, the reader is able to see some good in them.

The language in this book is beautiful; the author has a gift for stringing together very poetic sentences. However, there wasn't any sort of cohesive storyline. I kept trying to wrestle the individual parts of the story into a plot, and was frustrated when they remained disjointed until the end.

                    5 out of 5 stars NON-FICTION.......2007-02-06

Something that many readers do not realize is that Parrot in the Oven is complete non-fiction. Understanding this, hopefully many will now see that Martinez is not free to create the most climactic and action-packed plot possible. Still, Parrot in the Oven is a wonderfully juxtaposed story of a boy's journey through the early stages of adolescence, detailing his struggle through prevalent racist mentalities and social boundaries. Beautiful, even more so if you understand that it's non-fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Parrot In The Oven.......2006-11-03

Manny is a 14-year-old kid who wants to be more than just a penny he wants to be a vato firme. Parrot in the Oven is by Victor Martinez. This book is about a dad that is abusive, his brother can't hold a job, and mom acts like she can scrub all her problems away. I like this book because it is interesting. This book is interesting because dad tries to kill mom with his rifle, dad went to jail, Manny helps his brother on the job, Magda is having a baby and Manny is going to a party that he doesn't fill right going to. It has, causes and effects like dad tries to kill mom, dad goes to jail. I won't to read this book again and again. The author properly wrote even better books then Parrot in the Oven. Yes, I would recommend this book to others. Like my mother because she likes the books we read as a class and she knows the Spanish lines because she speaks Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars The Parrot in the Oven.......2003-05-09

Some of the things that I liked about this book is that it was well written, and the author really seem that he news what he was talking about. What I mean when I say that he know what he is talking about. He puts everything in detail to show that he cares about what he does. The one thing that I didn't like about this book is that there were too many bad words in it.I belivie that there should not be reading those kind of words because there are too many kids out there that are using those word and they shouln't be.If I would like anybody to read this I would say that the kid's parents should read this frist.Only because of all the bad words, and because of some of the details that the author goes through.

4 out of 5 stars the mexican in the oven.......2002-12-13

I am impressed by the colorful explenations that Victor gives in this book. You feel like if you are one of the charecters and you even can see and smell all of the sites where all the story takes place. In addition to it he shows you the conditions how the minorities used to live, in this case mexican people. Also he explain why Manny was so curious about getting involve in a gang, and how all of his family had to deal with all of other problems like his alcoholic dad or his mother that alway was cleaning the house, but if you want to know more about the story you better star reading it. I really have to say that this book is one of the best books that i have ever read, hoppefully you enjoy it too.
