5 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone seriously interested in the survival of our planet.......2006-05-05

For anyone seriously interested in the complexities involved in defining and solving environmental problems, this book is a must-read. It is just what it says it is, a "reader"; a collection of reprinted articles from a variety of sources addressing the key environmental issues and the politics that complicate them. The selection of articles is fair and includes a subset from the "wise use" camp. Debating the Earth will provide the naive reader with an introduction to the level of environmental literacy necessary to understand the many layers of complexity involved in even the simplest-seeming environmental issue. For readers already familiar with environmental literature, it is a logically organized collection of important papers well worth reading or re-reading to get the cumulative effect. Finally, Debating the Earth can be used as a reference collection of key papers in this area.

I ordered the book in late August at the beginning of my book ordering frenzy for classes this semester. It was the first over a period of three weeks. Amazingly enough I recieved the book later than books I had ordered two weeks later. It was supposed to take 7-11 days, the book wasn't even shipped for two weeks, then it cam 30 days after I had ordered it. A month into classes.

An attention-grabbing primer on mankind's direct and indirect effects on the natural world, this important book explains how such topics as global trends, economic disparity, and invasive species, among others, have changed the world in which we live.

World-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand's spectacular photographs feature fragile environments that are at risk of being lost as well as places that have already seen the devastating effects of human behavior. A poignant overview of the state of the globe, this book encourages readers to understand what is happening in the environment and to take action. His powerful photographs are used to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable development, so that future generations can inherit a livable planet. He lives in France.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible book.......2007-03-26

This book is absolutely amazing!!! The way it covers such complexity in such simple terms - with information that our children's generation MUST know - this is a must read (for both children and adults). My middle school science students are mesmerized by this book year after year, and it has lead them over and over to service learning projects. This book is definitely worth reading and owning.

        Book Description

In The Earth Policy Reader, award-winning environmental analyst Lester R. Brown and his colleagues chart progress in building the eco-economy, an economy that is compatible with the earth's ecosystem.

Brown explains, for example, why wind-generated electricity with its abundance and falling cost is emerging as the foundation of the new post-fossil fuel energy economy: now cheaper than electricity from coal, oil, or natural gas, it can be used to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen, the fuel of choice for the new fuel cell engines that every major automobile manufacturer is working on. And since an eco-economy relies heavily on recycling materials already in the system, such as steel and aluminum, we learn how, in this new economy, recycling industries will largely replace mining industries.

Bringing together in one volume the essential Eco-Economy Updates that are distributed worldwide over the Internet and published in the world's leading newspapers, The Earth Policy Reader monitors the shift from the old economy to the new.

          Book Description

Interdisciplinary in approach, Thinking Through the Environment tells how the natural environment has been understood in the modern world and how this has been questioned in recent years as uncertainty and complexity are acknowledged in contemporary societies. The collection guides readers through conventional thought about how environmental rights and obligations to future generations, nonhuman animals, and the biotic communities. These essays lead readers into a critical examination of social and political theories and their capacity for drawing on ecological thought. Each of the seven sections is introduced by the editor, who contextualizes the set of readings within its specific themes and issues.

            Book Description

The modern world is dominated by complex organizations. In this book Mark Bovens analyzes the questions associated with the search for responsiblity within such organizations. In organizations with many people contributing in many different ways, how can we determine who is accountable for organizational behavior? How do we define responsible behavior within organizations? Can different notions of responsibility prevent abuses? His analysis is multidisciplinary, combining law, social science, ethics, and organizational design, and provides a number of suggestions for institutional reform.

              Book Description

The Indicator Series contains fully-sourced and extensively documented country-specific files on the basic resources committed to national agricultural research systems (NARS). It includes, where possible, annual observations from 1960 to 1986 on a variety of agricultural research expenditure and research personnel series at the system or national level for 154 developing and developed countries. This volume contains the most comprehensive time series possible which is consistent in reporting data within countries, across countries, and between the personnel and expenditure series. Notes to the data tables often include supplementary tables which give a breakdown of the aggregate figures to an institutional level. The structure of the Indicator Series facilitates its use at three levels: (1) the data series themselves; (2) the data series plus personnel and expenditure comments; (3) the data, comments and citations (both sources and additional references) - for use in more targeted analysis at the country and/or issue-orientated level.

Exploring Unseen Worlds is a critically sophisticated, yet gripping immersion into the inner worlds of one of America's foremost thinkers. It demonstrates convincingly the extent to which James's psychological and philosophical perspectives continue to be a rich resource for those specifically interested in the study of mysticism. The book focuses on James's enduring fascination with mysticism and not only unearths James's lesser-known works on mysticism, but also probes into the tacit mystical dimensions of James's personal life and uncovers the mystical implications of his decades long interest in psychical research.

Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor, a certified diver or a beginning snorkeler, this guide to twenty-six of O'ahu's best snorkeling and diving sites will enrich and enhance your underwater adventures. Detailed driving instructions to each location are included as well as helpful maps showing onshore facilities and many offshore features you'll want to explore. You'll learn where it's safest to enter and exit the water, what to look for (coral, shells, fishes, underwater caverns), and what hazards to avoid. The author provides essential information on safety and seasonal wind and surf conditions and useful tips on diving and snorkeling equipment, night diving and spear fishing. Each site, chosen for its ease of access and the interest of its underwater topography, is rated according to degree of difficulty. The O'ahu Shore Divers and Snorkelers Guide will introduce you to some of the best diving and snorkeling on the island.

"Frank de Carvalho does an excellent job describing O'ahu's diving sites and how to access them. His guide is a valuable addition to the collective body of work on Hawai'i's shores and beaches." --- John R. K. Clark, author of Hawai'i Place Names: Shores, Beaches, and Surf Sites and Hawai'i's Best Beaches

5 out of 5 stars Oahu diving must-read!.......2007-03-22

This book is the secret that I needed after I moved to Oahu to avoid expensive boat dives. Great maps both above and below the water to make finding the site just as easy as finding the best underwater attractions. The book covers dive sites all over the island (you can always find a good site even if surf is too high on one part of the island...very valuable - especially during winter months). A "must buy" for any diver planning to explore the coasts of Oahu without a paid guide. You probably won't find this book in any dive shops on the Island...it would take all of their business!

5 out of 5 stars This book was very accurate.......2007-03-09

Couldn't believe once I got to Oahu and went to a couple of these dive sites how accurate this book was from directions to reef layout and compass headings. Went on a couple of dives with Oahu divers who were also very impressed with the accuracy of this book. A great resource but I recommend always verifying the sites with locals as there were hazzards that couldn't be mentioned in a book (i.e. at one dive site I found out there is a regular boat charter that doesn't pay attention to dive flags and drops anchor wherever and whenever he feels like it... never would have know that one without the local warning). Still a great book... two of the local guys I dove with from Oahu who are dive instructors are going to buy the book after seeing mine - what better recommendation could there be?

4 out of 5 stars Shore Diving is not dead.......2006-08-19

Most all the dive shops here have their own boats they want you to dive from, that's fine, but can get pricey. So being a cheap SoB I love this book and have done quite a few of the dives in it since picking it up a few months ago. Great planning tool for folks coming from off island too since he tells you what time of year it is best to do what dives. As always, leave your vauables at the hotel/house, I advise bringing only your drivers license, c-card and about $10-15 per person for postdive water/gatorade, pineapple or coconut and snacks.

                      5 out of 5 stars Compact guide.......2006-02-26

This book was extremely helpful when I first arrived in the islands. The author's descriptions of the different areas on the island and the driving directions were easy to follow and led me to some of the most beautiful places on the island. I did not realize the island was actually that large. I also found the guide to be a very well organized book that did a thorough job of explaining everything you'd need to know about snorkeling and diving on Oahu. I must for any traveler wanting to enjoy snorkeling and diving on Oahu.

4 out of 5 stars Diving the islands again.......2005-01-11

I dived several islands in Hawaii last August and picked up a copy of deCarvalho's book while on Oahu. This book has some great gouge on different sites around the island. I think anyone wanting to know other sites than some of the more popular and regular ones would find this guide helpful. The book is printed in black and white and the maps, but they are a great resource nontheless. The instructions on how to dive the sites are also helpful. Too bad there aren't other one source books like this one for the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. A tip: If you want gouge on some of the other islands, check out some of the Lonely Planet guide books as a few of them cover sites on the other island sites, but not with a lot of details as you would find in this book.

Which came first: The worldview, or the words to describe it? Very possibly the latter, argues the author of They Have a Word for It. "Finding a name for something," says Howard Rheingold, "is a way of conjuring its existence." While collecting words for this book, Rheingold says he "became sympathetic to the idea that we think and behave the way we do in large part because we have words that make these thoughts and behaviors possible, acceptable, and useful." Rheingold's refusal to pull together words for entertainment value alone--though many of these words, and Rheingold's commentary on them, are highly entertaining--is what has given this book (previously out of print) a kind of cult following.

Hawaiian contributes a word (ho'oponopono) here that means "solving a problem by talking it out"; Japanese, a term (kyoikumama) for a "mother who pushes her children into academic achievement"; Indonesian, a word (kekaku) meaning "to awaken from a nightmare"; and Mayan (some things, it seems, are universal), a concise way to say "stupid in-laws" (bol). While it is the Asian and obscure linguistic groups that seem to come up with the most "powerful" ideas, German wins for packing a whole sentence's worth of meaning into one (albeit long) word. How much happier Strunk and White would rest if we could just say Torschlüsspanik when discussing "the frantic anxiety experienced by unmarried women as they race against the 'biological clock'"; Treppenwitz when referring to the "clever remark that comes to mind when it is too late to utter it"; and Schlimmbesserung when lamenting "a so-called improvement that makes things worse." --Jane Steinberg

It all started with a friendly lunch. Jeremy Tarcher is the kind of publisher a writer dreams about. He isn't likely to merge with a new multinational conglomerate every other week, as book publishers are wont to do, and he actually likes to sit down with authors and talk about ideas. During one of our brainstorming sessions, Jeremy mentioned his desire to publish a lexicon of "untranslatable words" that don't exist in English but would add a new dimension to original languages. Words that would open a window on the way other cultures encourage people to think and feel, and thus point out new ways for us to think and feel.

I picked this book up at at an antique and used bookshop, and had a fun time reading it (I found myself exclaiming over all the phrases I wish I had already known). However, the illustrations that I found accompanied with the little quirky entries I did not find to be quite so well done. BUT...
Though I'm sure it was not Howard Rheingold's intentions, I found the illustrations to be rather offensive, especially because I am Japanese and found many of the kimono-clad women drawn in the book to be out of place. I kept thinking to myself, 'Who the heck wears that? Well, I guess my relatives and I do.'
However, the words themselves were little treasures, and I'm glad I found the book.

For all those that think that English is a rich language, comes this fun little book that shows us how other cultures have developed words to express "just that"--a situation, and emotion, and event or a relationship.

It is fun to read and to say, "Oh, yes. I wish we had this word in English."Come to think of it, there are many words in English that have been adapted from other languages. With globalization, we may see more of these words enter our language, so reading this book gives us a hint of the future.

The only drawback is the indexing of the book. You can't locate words easily.

4 out of 5 stars a fun book about interesting words.......2006-01-08

A fun book about interesting words. Coul dbe used to increase one's vocabulary when wanting to make a point. A useful reference to keep around.

                      2 out of 5 stars Questionable.......2004-03-11

I am not a native speaker of any language except English, so I cannot evaluate the veracity of these words. The entries look interesting, though often verbose. The chapters are not very helpful, though I don't know how else you would lay out a book like this. That brings up the index as the only remaining tool to tie the book together. However, the author has unfortunately used the index to promote the sources of her words (this could and should have been a line-entry under each word).

With no way to find the words you are looking for; nothing to tie the multitude of entries of this book together, the best I can give it is two stars. Without an exceptional index this book cannot stand as a "wordsmith's reference"; indeed, the best it can be is interesting or quirky.

There must be better books out there.

5 out of 5 stars On the tip of my tongue..........2003-07-06

How many times have you thought to yourself, 'I wish there were a word for this' ? Sometimes a feeling, sometimes an object, sometimes a description simply defies a simple one or two word construction, but rather involves lengthy comparison and development to get the point across, and often (particularly in conversation) doing such development leads away from the main topic of discussion.

Despite the vastness of the English vocabulary and the rich depth of heritage (a heritage strong on borrowing and adaptation), there are simply some things the English language lacks. I was reminded of this when writing a review on an archaeology book, in which the varying sense of history come through rather more clear in German than in English, where alternate words for history lose the historical sense.

This reminded me of the wonderful book by Howard Rheingold: They Have a Word for It: A Lighthearted Lexicon of Untranslatable Words & Phrases. Originally published in 1988, it is now back in print, and was a recent selection in one of the book clubs to which I am an over-subscriber. Rheingold is the author of many books, many on topics of technology, creativity, and intelligence. Perhaps he is best known for The Millennium Whole Earth Catalog, published in 1994.

`This book is meant to be fun. Open it at random and see if you don't find something that will amuse you, entertain you, titillate your curiosity, tickle your perspective. But you should know that reading this book might have serious side effects at a deeper level. Even if you read one page as you stand in a bookstore, you are likely to find a custom or an idea that could change the way you think about the world. It has to do with the insidious way words mold thoughts.' Indeed, this is true. The old dictum, 'don't think about elephants', is very true for this book. Each page will cause you think and ponder beyond the box of the English language.

Given Rheingold's technological interests, part of this book was researched, assembled, and created on early computer bulletin board services (BBS), which yielded for Rheingold both new friendships as well as interesting contributions of untranslatable words. Rheingold offered dinner to contributors of valuable additions. `Thinking about the right kind of untranslatable words creates a certain state of mind. I found myself looking at the mundane elements of everyday life through a new kind of lens, which revealed to me dimensions in my familiar environment that I simply had not seen before because I hand't known how to look.'

Words define who we are and how we see the word. Whether one lives in a literate society or not, whether one has other forms of intelligence (see Gardner's `Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences') such as musical, mathematical, etc., the way people are socialised and educated in most every society since the advent of language has been in terms of language, both oral and written. Humans have striven to put things into ever more precise and meaningful yet full and adaptable language.

Rheingold breaks his analysis of untranslatable words into the following categories:
                      - Human Family Affairs: People Words
                      - You Are What You Say: Words of Power
                      - Dance of the Sexes: Men, Women, and the Words Between Them
                      - The Eye of the Beholder: Conceptions of Beauty
                      - Serious Business: Words About Work and Money
                      - States of Mind: Words, Thoughts, and Beyond
                      - Life Is But a Dream: The Jargon of Mental Technologists
                      - Spiritual Pathwords: The Map, the Territory, and the Mystery
                      - The Body Politic: Words and Social Action
                      - Toolwords: Technology and Worldviews
                      - Strange Memes: Language Viruses

English speakers have long been familiar with words such as Tao, a Chinese concept that means many things such as 'the way', 'the process', etc., or Shalom, the Hebrew multiple-purpose word for peace, greeting, parting, etc. Religion has had enough trouble being put into words in any language to be clearly articulated in any given one (hence the problems of translation and explanation from texts in one language to cultures in another). Perhaps it will be part of your dharma to understand more of these concepts, in and beyond English.

There are interesting ideas here, that English would find very useful. Drachenfutter, a word from the German, roughly means 'a peace offering from guilty husbands for wives'. More literally meaning 'dragon fodder' (not an image most wives would be happy to be associated with, if indeed the 'dragon' refers to the wife), it has been a rather common idea in Germanic cultures in the past. The Russian word razbliuto in essence stands for the feeling (not quite of love, but perhaps close) that a person has for someone once loved but now longer the object of affection.

This is a wonderfully entertaining and enlightening work, that will give hours of pleasure and can spark many conversations, untranslatable though they may be! With interesting words from every continent and many historical periods, this will broaden your perspective of the ways in which people have seen the world and communicated their understandings of the world to others. `If you want to change the way people think, you can educate them, brainwash them, bribe them, drug them. Or you can teach them a few carefully chosen new words.'

                            Book Description

For the Phantom, there is only one girl. For Sam, there is only one horse.

When a hard–luck horse named Jinx comes to River Bend, everyone thinks he's a curse. Samantha knows he's not, but he is unruly, skittish, and the fastest horse she's ever seen. Then there's a runaway in the middle of the night, and someone gets a snakebite. Is the bronco really a jinx? Or could he be the good–luck charm Sam needs to save the day?

                            4 out of 5 stars Phantom Stallion # 13: Heartbreak Bronco.......2005-07-01

This book is good. Jinx is cute, and HARP is a neat idea, but this Phantom Stallion book lacks some of the luster that the others in the series have. Same case with Moonrise. It a good read though, something to pass the time. Have fun with it! I would recommend getting Red Feather Filly or Free Again, though.

5 out of 5 stars Best Out of the Series!!.......2005-03-04

I have read the first thirteen of the Phantom Stallion series, and Heartbreak Bronco is my favorite one. Like all the Phantom Stallion books, a lot of different story lines and problems are presented throughout the book. In Heartbreak Bronco, everyone's problems are solved with happy endings! I highly recommend the Phantom Stallion series for any horse lover!

4 out of 5 stars Very nice book.......2005-02-11

This book is a little "fast-paced" I think: they solve everything so quickly and easily that is a bit silly. I don't think some of the problems could have been fixed in just a few days like it was in the book. Also, Slocum's behavior is getting a little extreme and unrealistic to me though. I mean, yes he is a rich, spoiled jerk but he is starting to act like some silly character from a morning cartoon, always cursing Samantha and blaming her for everything. It seems a bit extreme to me.

However, I do like Jinx a lot and the story itself was a lot of fun to read and very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Another Awsome book by Farely!.......2004-11-01

I can't get enough of these Phantom stallion books! Every one seems to just get better and better.

HeartBreak Bronco is about a mustang named Jinx that gets a second chance because of the HARP program. Two girls are interduced in this book that are going into the program. I'm not going to say anything else because I think you should read it yourselves!
