Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful information but very bad english.......2006-02-05

This book provides a complete and clear overview of SAP's archiving functionality. The information is very well structured and even though the level of detail is not enough to do it completely yourself, the book at least will direct you in the right direction. I found this book very helpful, but I do have one comment that bothered me a lot while reading. The book was written by a German author and the English was very bad. Not only were some words very badly chosen (definitely using a dictionary) there were also a lot of grammatical errors. Since this is not a novel, this should not stop you from buying this book, because the information is still very useful, but I do hope the publisher will have somebody check the language before the next release.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only SAP archiving guide!!!.......2004-05-20

Clear and concise guide to R/3 archiving!!.This book gives a clear and concise approach to archive the business data in the R/3-System. What is most useful is that the customizing is explained. I think this is one of the most useful sapbooks. By reading this EXCELLENT book i have learned how to analyze the sap database, how to allocate the relevant sap archiving objects and how to design the tools to access the archived data.
As an experienced SAP consultant, I found this book extremely useful, comprehensive and concise.

Book Description

Who knows more about a business's shady practices than the people who work there? In this pioneering study, Paul Blumberg examines a wide variety of evidence, including over 600 accounts written by workers who disclose in elaborate detail the deceptions their employers practiced on the public. Employed in a wide variety of business enterprises--supermarkets, restaurants, fish markets, department stores, gas stations, drug stores, pet stores, and many more--these workers pull back the curtain and reveal the hidden recesses of the American marketplace. Blumberg documents these deceptions in numerous vivid stories, providing readers with a trenchant handbook on survival in America. He tells of stores that routinely mark prices up before a sale; gas stations that sell regular gas as high test; auto mechanics who spray-paint customers' old car parts and then charge them for new parts (in one gas stations, the workers claimed that the mechanic's best tool was his paint can); and pharmacists who sell generic drugs and charge name-brand prices. But equally important, he provides an insightful analysis of why deception pervades the American marketplace. Though at times amusing, The Predatory Society is also frequently disturbing for what it says about private capitalism: how dishonesty is all but built into the American marketplace, and how this dishonesty has potentially disastrous effects on trust and community in our society.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars misguided, but informative.......2001-05-01

"The Predatory Society" is quite entertaining. Blumberg clearly wants to get everyone mad about Capitalism, but he is so silly about doing it that he actually does the reverse. Most of the book centers on the diffuse nature of knowledge in society. Given extreme specialization and the costs of monitoring people that you trade with, there are always opportunities for people to cheat each other. Of course, Blumberg does not quite see things that way. To him, the profit motive makes people corrupt and under socialism people are nice to each other. Bumberg avoids the more dogmatic assertions that simple-minded Marxists make about overthrowing Capitalism, but he is still absurdly naïve about government. To him, advertising, ala Capitalism, has corrupted American Politics (as if American Politics was once pure as the wind-driven snow). Also, in Communist China Socialism breeds a wonderful sense of community- not the repression, mass murder and starvation that it is known for. All we need to do is to elect "progressive" politicians and trust them. Blumberg acknowledges that businesses have some incentive to be honest- to maintain their reputations. But he discounts this factor without providing any real statistical evidence to support this. Blumberg also acknowledges the productive nature of Capitalism, but he fails to acknowledge the extreme waste, fraud, and abuse in the public sector. Blumberg wants us all to patronize consumer cooperatives, but fails to recognize that the same problems with monitoring the operation of these concerns exist with these organizations as well. Workers at coops might not lie to customers as much, but they can slack of, steal, and cheat in other ways. The absence of a profit motive makes these problems worse than under for profit enterprise. Blumberg blames a lot on Capitalism. Recessions and the Depression are all the fault of Capitalism- the Federal Reserve is completely innocent in these matters despite its position in financial markets. Capitalism also alienates us from our true moral selves. The fact of the matter is that Capitalism is imperfect, but so is government. The same informational asymmetries that lead to fraud and waste in markets lead to (arguably greater) fraud and waste in government- at least I see the stores I shop at, who knows what those bureaucrats in DC do with my money. In short, Blumberg is an ideologue. He hates markets and loves government. He harps on market imperfections, some large, others small, a few imaginary, to try to justify the intrusive regulatory/welfare state that he worships. He trivializes government imperfections- that gave us disasters like Tuskegee, Vietnam, WWI, Japanese-American interment camps, Social Security (a Ponzi Scheme like no other) the Philippine-American War, Prohibition (Alcohol then, and MJ now), The Depression (courtesy of the Fed), and our vast array of Pork Barrel spending programs. But, to an ideologue like Blumberg there is no reason to bring up all the little problems with government that have come along through the years- what he needs to do is to demagogue issues of consumer fraud. Fortunately, Blumberg is so brazen in his biases that it is obvious that he is not a serious or thoughtful critic of markets. His book is an interesting and informative read- one that will make many consumers more alert to some of the tricks and gimmicks that await us all in markets. However, his desire for a more civil and communitarian society through big government is absurd. Read his book to hone your shopping skills, but for social theory and philosophy try reading F.A. Hayek, L. Mises, or Ayn Rand.

        Book Description

Fairy tales seem to be innocent stories, yet they contain profound lessons for those who would dive deep into their waters of meaning. In this book, Marie-Louise von Franz uncovers some of the important lessons concealed in tales from around the world, drawing on the wealth of her knowledge of folklore, her experience as a psychoanalyst and a collaborator with Jung, and her great personal wisdom. Among the many topics discussed in relation to the dark side of life and human psychology, both individual and collective, are: How different aspects of the "shadow"—all the affects and attitudes that are unconscious to the ego personality—are personified in the giants and monsters, ghosts, and demons, evil kings and wicked witches of fairy tales How problems of the shadow manifest differently in men and women What fairy tales say about the kinds of behavior and attitudes that invite evil How Jung's technique of Active imagination can be used to overcome overwhelming negative emotions How ghost stories and superstitions reflect the psychology of grieving What fairy tales advise us about whether to struggle against evil or turn the other cheek Dr. von Franz concludes that ever rule of behavior that we can learn from the unconscious through fairy tales and dreams is usually a paradox: sometimes there must be a physical struggle against evil and sometimes a contest of wits, sometimes a display of strength or magic and sometimes a retreat. Above all, she shows the importance of relying on the central, authentic core of our being—the innermost Self, which is beyond the struggle between the opposites of good and evil.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal look into the darkness.......2005-01-06

I love MLVF as an author, first of all. Her work is so concise and to the point, and absolutely eye-opening at all times. She not only sees really clearly, but is especially skilled at helping other people to. This book is one of my favorites that I have read by her. The other one is the one about dreams and death. This book is an exceptionally good look at how evil and the shadow operate and are expressed by the psyche. Also, whether or not you're into fairy tales, this book is still a great resource, in terms of psychology, creativity, mythology and cultural expression.

        Book Description

Well-known for his articulation of the "shadow side" of human individuality and culture, C. G. Jung wrote a great deal about the question of evil throughout his life and in scattered places in his work. In this book his position is pieced together from many sources. In his early work on the unconscious, for instance, he considered the role of evil in the mental processes of the severely disturbed. Later, he viewed the question of moral choice within the framework of his ideas about archetypes and discussions about moral choices, conscience, and the continual ethical reflection that is necessary for all of us. The material here includes letters to Freud and Father Victor White and selections from his writings ranging from his Answer to Job to his travel piece on North Africa.

        5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2003-08-06

a lesser known work by the master that explores the darkest elements of the human experience.

Elaine Pagels is the only one I can think of who comes close to the wisdom of Jung on this particular subject.

A classic, profound exploration of the dark side.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Jung's thought in his own words.......1998-12-09

This is an excellent introduction to a central area in Jung's thought Evil, the Shadow Side and its integration with the rest of the personality.

The selections from Jung's writings are excellent and there are extensive explanatory footnotes from the editor.

Jung will convince you that those who supress their shadow side soon see it in others and that one's shadow side has to be accepted not denied.

The book contains extensive selections from Answer to Job as well as hard to obtain Jung writings (unless you want to shell out a thousand dollars for his Collected Works).

Throught the book, Jung's compassion, vast erudition, and many and varied insights shine through.

        Book Description

Traditional doctrinal and historical interpretation both rely heavily on rational analysis. But from the disciples at Emmaus to the beginnings of the present century, it has been the impact of scripture upon the human heart that has changed human lives. In recent decades, this impact has been strengthened by advances in linguistic and literary theory, by such disparate influences as feminism, structuralism, Jungianism, deconstructionism, the analysis of archaic imagery and myth, the recovery of Gnostic texts, and finally an openness to pluralism, whether ethnic, geographic, religious, or interpretive. All of these factors are treated here with a brevity and comprehensiveness which convincingly show that the reader of scripture has a creative and not merely passive role.

        5 out of 5 stars Where's the mysticism?.......2006-07-02

As I was reading this book I assumed the author had some personal experience of the "Great Self Within" and it wasn't until I finished reading the book that I realized the author had made no mention of mysticism, altered states of perception, or direct experiences of the transpersonal. Without such an experience you are likely to underestimate just how god-like the psyche can be. It is mystics who struggle the most with spiritual grandiosity because they've had privileged, personal experience of the sacred and the numinous.

        5 out of 5 stars ideological sameness.......2004-08-03

Dr. Moore discusses how narcissism demands that others think and behave like us. It's something I struggle with daily. He draws out this and many other hidden patterns (sizes, shapes and colors) of ideological fundamentalism. To me this is an important idea for developing imagination or an open heart.

5 out of 5 stars Facing The Dragon, The Best Book on The Great Self Within.......2004-07-26

When you take a look around at this latest rising wave of darkness in our world, there are few voices speaking with clarity about the fundamental psychological and spiritual sources of that darkness, and, what can realistically be done on both an individual and global scale about it. Many are talking naively or in terms of divisiveness out of their own grandiosity. Robert Moore's new book, Facing The Dragon, is a wonderful insight into the full spectrum of grandiosity and how it functions to create both great peace and beauty, and, great evil and chaos when not faced on a personal and global scale. Dr. Moore synthesizes many sources of understanding: psychology, religion, spirituality, and culture, and brings his perspective and research together with real examples to clearly help the reader see how grandiosity works in their lives, their families, their churches, and their governments. I highly recommend this book to anyone in academia, government, religious or spiritual study, business, or anyone otherwise on a personal spiritual journey. The book is yet another in a cohesive series of works Dr. Moore has given us intended to bring our collective psychology closer together as a planet. Thank you Dr. Moore for this continued work. I can't wait until The Dragon rears its head in the next book, Riding The Dragon! David Merkel

5 out of 5 stars This is an important work.......2004-07-14

Men in recovery - or anyone actually who has ever had to adjust some personal behaviour to save their own life - eventually comes to realize that the time has come to face the Dragon. Or the devil within, or the beast within, or whatever you want to call it. And whatever it was that you were avoiding with the substance or behaviour ingested - it is exactly that Dragon which must now be faced. Be it anger, fear, lonliness, what hve you. This is generally not good news. And despite the wealth of revovery material available in the world today; there is not nearly enough which approach these problems from this perspective. This is an important work.

If it is your intention to figure out what Yang Luchan could put into practice, you know that all we have are hints. A written hint here. An oral hint there. A rediscovery from this person. An oral tradition from that person. In other words, you know how hard it is to stay on the path. Well, here is a book that is chock full of hints, a veritable roadmap of them. If taijiquan is for you a "martial" art, why don't you own this book?

Here's a statement issued by the Yang family (Yeung is Cantonese for
                        Yang

                        -----
                        Yeung Family's Tai Chi Chuan

The Yeung family's style of Tai Chi Chuan is unique to the Yeung
                        family.

It was started by Great Master, Yeung Lu Chan, who was born over two
hundred years ago, and has been passed down to family members,
generation after generation to the present day. The lineage under
discussion is that of Mr Yeung Sau Chung, the eldest son of Mr Yeung
Ching Po. Mr Yeung Sau Chung moved to Hong Kong with his family in
1949, and continued to dedicate his life to practicing and teaching Tai Chi Chuan until his death in 1985. Since then his family has devoted
themselves to practicing and teaching Tai Chi Chuan.

Mr Yeung had taught for over fifty years, and his daughter Ms Yeung Ma Lee, taught for over twenty years. Over these seventy years, they both have taught many students. Their method of teaching is personal and individualized. Through this methodology, they have employed various teaching approaches that take into consideration an individual's learning level, capabilities and physique.

It is important to clearly define the different categories of learning
                        more fully:

Category one is family. Yeung family members are taught the complete
body of knowledge. In the family, the methods and formulas are observed
most strictly, and the teaching methods employed are quite severe.
While all family members learn, not all like teaching and not all take
                        disciples.

Category two is disciple. Generally, a student is required to spend a
specific amount of time studying with the teacher before being
considered for discipleship. Students are accepted as disciples based
on several criteria. The disciples must have aptitude and possess virtues
such as honesty, kindness and loyalty to the Yeung's family. Once
accepted, they would acquire from the Master skills that lead to a
level of comprehension that far exceeds that of the students so that they can help the Master to spread the Yeung Family's Tai Chi Chuan.

A disciple is allowed to use the Yeung family's name when teaching.
Disciples can choose to take their own disciples. All disciples are
listed in the chart of School of Yeung's style of Tai Chi Chuan but not
in the Yeung's family lineage despite the fact that some people
                        shamefully promote themselves this way.

Category three is student. With permission from the Yeung's family
students could teach using the Yeung's family name.

The family itself has published books about Tai Chi Chuan. One must
understand that books only serve as a guide; you could only learn the
art well with instructions from the Yeung family. Recently a movie of
Mr Yeung Sau Chung surfaced on the internet (without family permission).
The same principle applies. It may be the best form one has ever seen,
but without the underlying formula, it is impossible to learn from it.

There are a lot of claims by some people saying they are practicing the
"real" Yeung style, or they possess the "forgotten secrets" etc. It is
absolutely important that the followers should exercise the utmost
caution to discern the authenticity of these claims and whether the
martial art is appropriate for their physique, otherwise it is not only
a waste of time and money but also it might cause serious injury. Yeung
style Tai Chi Chuan is both an extraordinary defensive art as well as
an unparalleled health maintenance exercise. The principles and
applications are only as valuable and effective as the source from
                        which they spring.

                        Know your source.
                        -----------------------

Not my words, but the words of the Yeung family. There are a lot of taichi chuan masters teaching terrible and innacurate form. Buyer Beware!

5 out of 5 stars Tai Chi Touchstones: Yang Family Secret Trasmission.......2005-07-23

It is a very interesting approach to Tai Chi. It explains the philosophy and the basic. It is good for people that are starting with the study of Tai Chi.

5 out of 5 stars A scholarly compilation of early Yang oral and written works.......2002-04-28

Though "secret transmissions" is somewhat of a misnomer, what the author presents is a collection of early published taiji material--mostly by Yang Cheng Fu, though there is one work
indirectly attributed to Yang Ban Hou.

These early works are not a step-by-step manual, but guides to the practicing student to help gain insight into what they're practicing. What any reader should immediately pick-up, however, is that these guides were written for someone learning how to fight.

Though much of the material is by (and thus, oriented towards) a Yang-stylist, the fundamental principles of taiji remain the same in all styles, so there is enough material that all taiji practitioners can benefit by. In fact, this book was recommended to me by a Chen-style practitioner.

The other part of this book, the author's foreword, gives the colorful (and sometimes conflicting) historical background and accounts of the Yang family, which is in of itself a fascinating read.

This book is definitely recommended for any serious taiji student.

                        4 out of 5 stars Interesting Book.......2001-12-09

The books contains a few interesting passages, along with the common banalities that I hear all the time from anyone who knows what's what in Tai Chi.

Still, the stories are nice. It's refreshing to find a book where someone doesn't show you a (poor) form with 2 basic applications and claim to the the God of Tai Chi.

If you really want something to sink your teeth into, hit the tai chi classics.

PS- The best laugh in the pages of the book are the pics of Yang Chen Fu in "action". For a master, he had sloppy form.

Hola! Communicating With Spanish-Speaking Parents is the long-awaited answer to the dilemma many teachers face when a student's parents speak only Spanish - and the teacher speaks no Spanish. The book provides 36 reproducible letters in both English and Spanish. Letters are customized largely by checking off pertinent information and filling in the name of the family. Or, if you prefer, you can select the appropriate letter from the enclosed diskette, tailor it to your needs, and print it out on your own stationery. Don't miss this opportunity to make Spanish-speaking parents feel more a part of their child's schooling and to establish all-important home-school communication. Fantastico!

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money!.......2006-07-29

I teach Spanish and ESL/ELL. I often translate materials for teachers who do not speak spanish. I am always looking for good resources to help me with those not so common phrases, as well as, education specific vocabulary. I was intrigued by the title of this book and decided to give it a try despite the lack of content information provided on amazon.
I am actually pretty impressed and feel that if you know even just a little spanish this resource would be very helpful.
It specifies that it is for grades K-8 and I would agree. The book is divided into several categories, such as, beginning of the year, school schedule, grade reports, math skills, special events and others. Within each category are several letters that might be sent home for various reasons. Each one is written in English and then followed by the same letter in Spanish. They are pretty general, so they would be helpful in a variety of school settings. Many of them are very simple such as, there will be no school tomorrow, others are more indepth such as a sample grade report. And as I mentioned earlier, if you know even a little about the language you could add and change any letter to fit your purpose more completely.

As lavish as the layouts it celebrates, Golf Courses of the PGA Tour offers a comprehensive tour of each of the permanent PGA stops. Profusely illustrated with lush photography and painted routing plans for each 18, it's a veritable feast to look at, and a fascinating read, as well. Teed up to match the week-in, week- out schedule of the competitive season, the book begins in California with the Mercedes Championship at La Costa and ends with the Tour Championship (which rotates courses) and the unofficial events, including the Skins Game and the Plantation Course of the Kapalua International. For each venue, it presents concise tournament and course histories, hole-by-hole scorecards, a quick playing tip from a winner at each venue (Phil Mickelson on playing low shots at Torrey Pines, Raymond Floyd on hitting a draw at Doral, Arnold Palmer on whacking long irons at Bay Hill, Nick Price on driving for accuracy at Cog Hill), and heads for home with an extensive collection of PGA Tour records and statistics. Both useful and attractive, it's the kind of book that should wedge itself perfectly onto the coffee table of any golf enthusiast. --Jeff Silverman

The author, a noted golf authority who for 25 years was GOLF Magazine's editor-in-chief, provides an anecdotal history of each tournament, along with valuable tips on how to play specific shots. Complementing the text are beautiful color photographs of all the sites, including rarely seen views of the courses that are joining the Tour for the first time in 2005.

Comprehensive statistical tables for each tournament, schematic maps or drawings of each course, yardage and par information for each hole of each course, and detailed descriptions of the most challenging holes help make this carefully researched and wonderfully readable book an invaluable addition to the golfer's bookshelf. From the armchair golfer who follows the Tour on television to the active player seeking inspiration and information, this sumptuous volume makes the perfect gift for any links fan. AUTHOR BIO: George Peper, editor-in-chief of GOLF Magazine for 25 years, wrote the first and second editions of this book. He lives and golfs in St. Andrews, Scotland.

5 out of 5 stars I'm very pleased with this purchase.......2006-03-23

I purchased this book to use as our Guest Book at our wedding this summer. Our wedding and reception are at a golf course, so we thought this would be a fitting book for our guests to sign. There are many beautiful pictures, and plenty of space for them to write their wishes. For our purposes, I absolutely love the book! I recommend it to anyone - I think it's a great coffee table read!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for the golfer & golf fan.......2001-03-18

This deluxe volume covers each of the courses on the PGA Tour and has several full color pictures of key holes on each course covered. Since some PGA tour events are replaced by new ones, the book may become slightly dated but, nonetheless, it is a great spectator's guide for those who watch the tour each week on TV or who occasionally attend tour events in person. The volume also includes a great map of each course covered. This is useful because it puts the course in perspective, For example, I have seen the famous 13th hole at Augusta National on TV many times but never appreciated how sharp a dogleg it is until seeing the map. Also, the map shows the direction each hole runs in relation to other holes. For example one hole may go out and the next hole come back in the opposite direction. The maps give you this perspective. Another great feature of the book is a short piece written by a golfer who has won the tournament played on that course. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

This is a poor book. The title is mesleading, it is not an instructional book for lefthanders like the classic "Golf My Way" by Jack Nicklaus. It is instead an autobiography of Mr. Weir's rise to glory and the mental challenges he overcame. Only in the very last portion of the book is their any instruction for lefties - with very poor graphics. I do not recommend this book.
