Book Description
The public decision-making process governing the issue of casino gambling tends to lead to wrong outcomes, and the studies typically provided to justify the phenomenon are conceptually flawed. Seeking to describe what true economic development is, this study establishes the framework for a valid cost-benefit analysis to assess whether it actually occurs and its methods can be applied to the casino industry in America. Accounting for a wide range of economic and social factors, Earl Grinols concludes that the social costs of casino gambling considerably outweigh their social benefits.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Review of Economics of Gambling.......2007-04-25
We used this book to help fight off a casino planned for our small town, and we won. Grinols is an economist and the expert on casino economics. He points out that for every $1 that comes into the area from a casino, $3 goes out in unforseen economic costs. Casinos are not sustainable economic development. They are a regressive tax, have very high social costs, and as Warren Buffett said, "government shouldn't be in the business of making losers of its citizens".

Customer Reviews:
A Useful Collection.......2003-11-03
This collection of 15 papers is written, with a few exceptions, primarily for an academic audience and to academic standards. Although it covers very similar territory to that in Sydänmaanlakka: An Intelligent Organization, it is much less approachable for the general managerial reader. On the other hand, the individual articles go into substantial depth, with a wealth of references. The collection will be valuable to Human Resource and Organizational Development practitioners.
Some of the articles are by 'great names' in the field including:
* Prahalad and Hamel on core competence
* Leonard-Barton (Leonard) on the factory as a learning laboratory
* Brown and Duguid on communities of practice
* Isaacs on dialogue and organizational learning
* Argyris on teaching smart people how to learn
* Kolb on the process of experiential learning.

Book Description
The legendary golf instructional, available again. This is, along with Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, THE book Golf professionals turn to.
"Thirty years ago I was recommending Joe Dante's book The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf as a must read for aspiring PGA professionals. What Dante said in '62 has influenced many of the game's finest teachers. Dante was a visionary."--Gary Wiren, author of New Golf Mind
When published, The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf radically changed the way many players thought about the golf swing. Dante's system showed how simple it was to improve one's game, and at the same time gave the golfer one of the most comprehensive analyses of swing mechanics ever published. Now, thirty-three years after its original publication, Main Street is proud to reissue this classic instructional. Dante begins by sweeping out all the misconceptions of the game. "If good golf is to be learned and the poor player is to improve, a purging must take place, painful as it may be." Dante discusses a few basics of grip and stance, and then he gets to the heart of his book, the four magic moves. As he reveals each of the moves, Dante focuses on the physical checkpoints so that any golfer can make sure that his or her swing is on the right track.
The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf is straightforward and easy to understand, yet unlike other golf books it is irreverent and audacious in its approach to mastering the game. The publication of this rediscovered classic is sure to establish Joe Dante's reputation as one of golf's greatest teachers.
Customer Reviews:
Finally in the position to go after it.......2007-10-13
I bought Dante's book after connecting in spirit with the other customers here who bought it, found it worked, and shared their views. I'd watch the pros on TV and was always intrigued by that great position at the top with the flat wrist and the first move down. Getting the whole thing from the dead start to the top is a process that has never been adequately conveyed to me and absorbed by me...until I read this book. The meticulous treatment of the first move with the early wrist break to the top is a masterpiece of instruction for the lost soul. Don't rush your time spent reading and practicing Move Uno. Once you feel that sensation of owning your grip on the club with the hands set solid and perfectly at the top of your coil, you're about ready to trust Dante with your firstborn. Ahhh...so THIS is what a player's swing actually feels like.
The alternative golf swing that works.......2007-07-13
I am a golf instructor based in New Zealand and purchased the book based on what I had read on some internet sites. The book advocated an early wrist break that is not commonly taught or known about.
Dan Shaugers/Mike Austin "How to Kill the Ball" and "21st Century Golf Swing" which I am an accredited teacher..... are the only other books that you will read that teach such an action with the wrists. Not only that we both teach lateral movements of the hips.
If you have purchased Dan's books you will certainly enjoy reading about Joe Dante's method.
Best Of The Best.......2007-03-08
I don't usually (how about never!!) write book reviews; however, this is one book I feel like deserves my input. Being a golf book junkie, I feel like I am qualified to put in my two cents. For what it may be worth, this book, in my opinion, is the absolute best book that has ever been written in regard to helping golfers achieve success. Yes, there are other books that can technically explain various positions, etc, but this book by Dante gives you practical and easily understood instructions on improving/understanding the golf swing. Simply put, this book is the ONLY book I could unequivocally give a 5-star rating.
Golf instruction that is understandable and actually works!.......2007-02-22
After enriching Amazon by purchasing just about every lame golf book manufactured I stumbled upon this gem. Mr. Dante explains in concise detail why traditional golf instruction/tips are faulty in that they rely on a fundamentally incorrect perception of what is going on in the swing. He further lays out the correct way of swinging a golf club that is shockingly clear, with appropriate and easy check points. Proof is in the pudding, after years of just flailing around with little or no improvement, (and hundreds of dollars spent for "golf" lessons.) I have made dramatic improvement to my golf game in a matter of months. Try it! Best $18.00 you will spend.
Techniques finally explained! .......2007-02-13
I thought I had enough of golf instruction books, having read so many in my life. I've also purchased videos and online "ebooks" and finally I've found the book that explains how to use my hips in the golf swing. This has been the biggest puzzle for me - getting my hips involved in the swing without causing a slice. The other aspect of the golf swing explained by Joe Dante so much better than I've seen before is how to create lag. His unique wrist-cock and swing make the whole swing sequence make much more sense. This is the first book I've read that has made me really change my golf swing - for the better. The belt drill is the most useful drill I've ever tried. The first time out, my swing was more powerful and accurate - and I'm hitting my driver with a high draw!
He spends a little too much time discussing what most golfers and instructors do wrong, but once he gets to his four moves, it becomes clear why he spent the time dispelling old myths. If you've read all the others already, do yourself a favor and read one more.

Book Description
A non-technical explanation of GSM. Written in non-engineering language for anybody who needs to understand how Global Systems for Mobile Communications work. Great for sales and customer service staff.
Customer Reviews:
This is NOT meant to be a technical book!.......2004-12-28
The people who have ripped this book because it oversimplifies GSM technology are completely missing the point of the book. It isn't meant to be for the engineer-types. It is squarely aimed at the ground-level reader seeking to gain a little insight on how GSM networks and technology function. Relax a little before you invest in books people. Read the descriptions before you purchase! When I read the description of this book I see things such as, "...a book that proves you don't have to be an engineer to understand GSM," and "...explained in terms that any non telecommunications person can understand," and "You won't find any complex engineering diagrams...," and "A non-technical explanation of GSM," and "Written in non-engineering language," and "Great for sales and customer service staff." Seem pretty straight-forward to me. If you do happen to work in the sales and customer service area of a GSM service provider, I would recommend this book as a great place to lay the foundation of understanding of GSM networks. If you want to know more after reading the book, I would suggest talking with one of your company's RF engineers. I had the pleasure of being personally trained by George Lamb when I was working for Aerial Communications (before it was bought by VoiceStream/T-Mobile/Cingular). He was a great trainer for our sales staff and his infromation allowed us to explain to customers the benefits of this (then) emerging technology in easy to understand terms. Remember...SIMple - YES...Technical - NO!!!
GSM Made SIMply Ridiculous.......2002-12-07
To any reader who wants to know something about GSM (and wants to find accurate, clear, concise information), LOOK TO ANOTHER SOURCE OF MATERIAL. I found this book to be inaccurate, confusing, misguided and insulting. A total waste of money, time and trees.
Simply too simple ..........2002-06-03
Even though enjoyable to read, it does not get real insight on the topics of ineterest
Take it for what it is.......2001-10-12
I agree with those that say this book is not technical. From what I read it was not intended to be. It speaks in SIMPLE terms to explain GSM to sales people and other non technical users.
I agree also agree that the book is not for those that have a lot of eperience with other ceullar technologies.
Take this book for what it is...an introduction for beginners and non technical people. If that is th spirit in which the book is purchased it is a great fit.
A SIMple Book.......2001-07-13
Definitely is not for RF Engineers, his explanations are basic and short. It seems like a summary of newspapers and magazines condensed in a Book (explained in layman terms). I Don't recomend it if you want an initial approach to the GSM Access technology, and you are experienced in CDMA or IS-136 (Keep away from it). Don't even think about an Air Interface explanation or high level approach of things.
Book Description
Dear Wall Enthusiast,
If you are looking for some sort of decoration for the walls of your home or cell, you have picked up the wrong item entirely. Not only is this poster book far too heavy to be nailed to a wall, the images it contains are extremely depressing.
This book contains nothing but unnecessarily large photographs of distressing moments in the miserable lives of the three Baudelaire siblings. Even if you flip through the book as quickly as possible, you are likely to see images of a burnt-down house, a deadly snake, a bad play, and a notorious villain in a variety of badly tailored disguises. Your blank walls would be better off covered with a tapestry, a word which here means "an ugly piece of cloth too thin to use as a blanket and too large to use as a napkin."
I will spend the rest of my life staring at images like these in the cavernous room of my mind. You, however, are free to find more cheerful posters, perhaps displaying a fuzzy cat, a basket full of puppies, or a handful of flowers arranged in some sort of vase.
With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket
