Nonprofits considering expanding into the global arena are often overwhelmed by the complexities and sensitivities involved. Koenig's book breaks the process into practical steps for integrating global considerations into all the strategic directions and goals of the organization. It is realistic about the challenges but optimistic about possibilities. Useful features include bibliographies, an excellent index and case studies of global efforts by organizations. The book cannot be compared to any others I know of because there aren't any others. Koenig has filled a gap and filled it well.

Great primer for nonprofits interested in a bigger impact.......2004-04-05

As someone who spent many years working or volunteering in multinational organizations and who cares deeply about international issues, I found the book to be an excellent primer for a nonprofit thinking about entering or deepening its international engagement. I truly believe that it is essential for every nonprofit to become more aware of its role in the global community. This book can get your nonprofit started.
While most of the examples are from US nonprofits, in the spirit of the book, the author also includes examples from other countries.

You might be surprised at the nonprofits that already have benefited from international connections, such as Chicago's StreetWise, Boston-headquartered City Year, or the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The book is easy reading and raises issues that any nonprofit will need to consider as it deepens its international involvement. It gives very helpful examples of other nonprofits that have addressed some of those issues. It is not in the scope of the book to give detailed answers to every question - for example, the mechanics of fundraising in other countries.

Of particular usefulness is the author's attention to both strategic and practical advice for nonprofits going international - from big picture issues such as organizational structure to more mundane but essential challenges such as setting up phone meetings across international time zones. The book is particularly good at highlighting cross-cultural communication considerations. Ms. Koenig's 20 years of experience working with local, national and international nonprofits, and her time spent living abroad, clearly show through.

This edited book is devoted to an issue of increasing importance in management theory and practice: organizational identity. The concept of organizational identity has received attention in many disciplines such as strategic management, marketing, communication and public relations, and organization theory. As globalization of business and organizations of all kinds becomes the norm rather than the exception, issues of collective identities take on a strategic importance. There has been, however, very little integration among the various disciplines and practices resulting in conflicting definitions, and little cumulative research.
The aim of this title is to further understanding about collective identities phenomena by bringing together contributions from various management disciplines. The editors have developed an integrative framework--the five-facet framework--that allows articulation of contributions from disciplines as diverse as strategic management, organization theory, marketing and communication. Sixteen scholars from Europe and the US have contributed nine chapters that explore various aspects of collective identities using the five-facet framework. The result is the first book to bring together contributions from various fields and integrate them into a single conceptual framework. Predator Calling by Gerry Blair.......2000-04-04

Very well written and gives a plethera of details and information on how to be successful at calling in predators. My success went up several fold after reading and following Mr Blairs recommendations, he obviously has a lot of experience and the ability to relate those to the reader well, along with his wry mirth. The book contains information on coyotes, bobcats, cougar, bear, and some of the smaller predators. A must read book for the varmint hunter or anyone who would like to call in predators just for watching. Highly recommend this book.

Necessary for any great speech.......2002-03-26

I had an important ceremony coming up and I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to wow the crowd. This book gave me enough good ideas to research, write, and deliver a great speech. I had three goals for my speech: Establish myself as a great speaker, make the audience understand that I had written a great speech, and bring the receipient to the point of tears.

I did just that. The crowd was taken aback by my speech and that speech ended up being the one thing that everyone remembered about that evening.

I strongly encourage anyone who has a speaking engagement coming up to read this book. It will give you the guidance necessary to write a great speech regardless of the reason.

Best Public Speaking Book for analytical & intense reader.......2001-01-12

In architecture schools considerable time is spent on materials for building. The potential of the materials determines what can be built and how it will look and feel. How is it that other public speaking books spend so little time on choosing the right word. Perlman spends a great deal of effort on teaching how to find and select the right word. He demonstrates how the right word for speaking is different than the right word for written communication. You can be a great writer without being a good speaker, but you can't be a great speaker without being a good writer.

"Writing Great Speeches" is for the analytical or educated reader that can handle a fast and furious pace. A direct approach on how to research and construct well organized speeches. Should be ranked high on anybody's list of excellent books on public speaking. It is the best book in the "Essence of Public Speaking Series." Excellent guidance on how to start writing a speech where you are knowledgeable on the subject and how to research areas that are not your expertise. Excellent chapter on how to pick exactly the right word and why it is important.

No other book covers demonstrating legitimate creditability as well as Perlman. He focuses in on exactly how to write great speeches. Like a fast moving train you are carried down the track of learning the skills with overpowering intensity.

The Appendix of Aids to Quick Creditability is worth the price of the book. It is a refreshing list of reference books the provide a map to rapidly gaining knowledge on any subject.

If you are like me nearly every book I read is disappointing in its content and /or its clarity and hence we read many books when a subject is important to us. Extremely rare do we find books so insightful and tightly written that we read it many times. These special books are so important that they will always stand out in your memory. This may be that book on public speaking for crafting the speech.

A great ride!.......2007-02-27

I have always loved horses, but had only passing touches with them "in the flesh". But my cousin shows a lovely Arabian, and this book gave me a glimpse into her world. Even though I'm not in the horse show circuit, I could relate to Michael and his wife's love of their horses, and the tales of the good, bad, ugly and just plain odd points of each horse as they got to know it. I think the book would also help people who've lost a well-loved pet or companion animal, as throughout the author's lifetime, he had to say goodbye to several wonderful horses, and he shares his emotions in a way that allows you to remember and grieve well your own losses. It's also a step into another world to think of the big city and finding ways to ride within its confines, and I especially loved the pictures from this time period of glamour. I highly recommend it for other "horse people".

Still smiling.......2006-12-05

I found some of the hyper-critical reviews surprising, almost as if the reviewers weren't reading the same book. As someone who has renewed her riding after a 20-year hiatus (having been, in large part, turned off by Claremont and the rutted bridle paths of Central Park), I found this book absolutely charming. The tales of Korda's various horses were heart-warming - I loved the tale of Missouri who still finds purpose in his life at 29, I cried for Hustle, and found the final chapter extremely moving. Korda has great affection and admiration for his wife after over 20 years of marriage, and who can/should argue with that? He also has great affection for his horses, with all their quirks, which is as it should be. Much of what some of the reviewers interpreted as superiority is actually self-deprecating humor of the English variety but which I thoroughly enjoyed.

A disapointing book from such a big-name in the publishing world.......2006-08-19

I had high hopes for this book, but was sadly disapointed in the quality of the story and writing. While the equine anecdotes were often interesting or "struck a chord" (the only reason I give this book 2 stars), the writing of the book was about at the level of a talented fifth grader. The stories are presented out of chronological order, which is irritating and confusing; you
will find yourself reading episodes involving horses of whose death's Korda has gone into great detail about only a chapter or two before, which is a serious detriment to the flow of the story and has you contantly flipping back and forth. Not to mention that it's hard to believe Korda was ever employed as an editor, considering his flimsy grasp on the rules of punctuation and lack of common sense about the flow of a scentence. An entire paragraph may be one legnthy scentence, laden with commas (commas, along with the occasional period, seeming to be the only punctuation Korda is familiar with-- either that or the only two punctuation keys working on his computer). He also interjects "aside" comments into scentences with no regard for how confusing the jumbled information appears to the reader. Many (if not most) of his scentences are severly overburdened and would benefit from putting some information in parenthesis, using a hyphen or semi-colon, or simply making the scentence into two or three seperate scentences.

I did not, however, notice him over-exaulting his wife, a common complaint in the reviews. Nonetheless, I did become irritated with his belief that his horses were all so much more special than and superior to everyone elses' horses-- even horses who (to the author's own admission) enjoy throwing their rider are exaulted and touted as better than all other horses, so long as they belonged to either Korda or his wife. Every one of the horses Korda has ever owned, he seems to believe, is the "best horse in the world". One eventually begins to wonder why Korda wote the book, as he continually critisizes fervent horse people and repeatedly admits that horses are but a hobby for him, not a true passion.
Ultimately, I'd say read the book if you're very into horses and can get it free or cheap. Someone familiar with the horse world (especially Hunting or 3 Day Eventing) will certainly get a chuckle at some of the characters in the book, and as mentioned certain aspects of the anecdotes certainly strike a chord. However, be prepared for a frustrating, poorly written read as well as some general confusion due to the grammar and chronology of the book.

A Fun Read.......2006-02-08

I found Horse People to be highly amusing, if a little too centered on the riding career of the author's wife and the world of eventing.

I grew up in Southern California in the world of horses and I disagree with the author's analogy of "food stamps and old paint" in his description of Western horse owners. While I did know many people of modest means who owned high-dollar horses, I did not know any on the dole. Most of them were working class, as was my father. We had good horses of good breeding and we managed to take pretty good care of them--which was also true of most of the people we knew.

I also knew real movers and shakers when I was coming up and, although some might criticize Korda's excessive attention to their world, he has them pretty well pegged, in my opinion. They're important, in my view--since it is they that help our cherished traditions continue--since only they can really afford to indulge themselves fully in this expensive endeavor. Also, it is they who provide employment for the countless trainers and other handlers, who are truly the unsung heroes of the equine industry.

I do feel that he could have gone a little more into the details of horse rescue and retirement, which is carried on by people of relatively modest means all over the country. I also feel that he could have discussed the horse meat industry in a little more detail. For example, he might have mentioned the growing equine theft problem that it has given rise to, now that it is profitable for any petty criminal to steal a horse that might be convenient and sell him by the pound to the killers--something that happens frequently and almost happened to one of my horses about a year ago.

Still, I highly recommend this to horse people and non-horse people. Above all, it is a fun read and maybe it will inspire more horse people, from other walks (or rides) of the "riding life" to tell their stories.

Skip It.......2005-11-05

Pretentious, boring crap. Here and there an insightful characterization or anecdote will get your hopes up, but for the most part this book is a "Look at me, I'm so rich, my wife looks great in her underpants, we are super" vanity project that made me cranky. I read this book over a year ago and I'm still mad I bought it. There are so many horse books out there that are worth reading: Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley is an excellent place to start. Don't bother with this one, unless you're One of Them.
