Much applied environmental economics is concerned with the valuation of changes in environmental quality. Obtaining reliable valuation estimates requires attention to theoretical and econometric issues that are often quite subtle. Volume 2 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics presents both the theory and the practice of environmental valuation. It synthesizes the vast literature that has accumulated since the publication of the Handbook of Natural Resource and Energy Economics two decades ago. It includes chapters on individual valuation methods written by researchers responsible for fundamental advances in those methods. It also includes cross-cutting chapters that deal with aspects of welfare theory, uncertainty, experimental methods, and public health that are pertinent to valuation. Throughout the volume, attention is paid to research and policy issues that arise not only in high-income countries, where most of the theory and econometrics that underlie applied valuation methods have been developed, but also in poorer parts of the world. The volume provides a state-of-the-art reference for scholars and practitioners alike.

Conceptual Confusion.......2007-08-11
"Evolution" is not the right word for what Baum is talking about. "Learning" is. Evolution can take place among the population of, say, retail bakeries over time. They are started, they grow, they multiply outlets, they are absorbed by other entities, they close up shop. If a single organization changes, that is not usefully called evolution. It is LEARNING. What might be a mere semantic issue were it buried somewhere in the text, is a fairly reliable indicator of conceptual confusion in a chapter heading -- or a book title.

Binmore and Samuelson [Binmore, K., Samuelson, L., 1999. Evolutionary drift and equilibrium selection. Review of Economic Studies 66, 363-393] have shown that perturbations (drift) are crucial to study the stability properties of Nash equilibria. We contribute to this literature by providing a behavioural foundation for models of evolutionary drift based on the similarity theory introduced by Tversky [Tversky, A., 1977. Features of similarity. Psychological Review 84, 327-352]. The innovation is that we derive the similarity relations from the perception that each agent has about how well he is playing the game. We obtain different models of drift depending on how we model that perception and show the conditions for each model to stabilize elements in components of Nash equilibria that are not subgame-perfect.

this book is amaterurishly written and edited and poorly final-proofed. organization is helter skelter. biggest complaint is way too much fluff. in fact, the book is mostly fluff. very little on scoring and strategy other than the obvious qualitative stuff. hotels. how the riders get on the bus. did you really want to know the secrets of the podium girls? well there aren't any. but the writers seem to think you want to know that. maybe you do.
a MUCH better source for everything technical about the Tour is in Wikipedia. save your money and shelf space and look it up.

At this writing, October 2005, the book is still hot off the press and very current. If you're interested in the Tour, this book is for you because it covers and explains pretty much every aspect of the event.

Even as a avid follower of the Tour and Bicycle racing for that matter, this book gave me insights about the Tour and Bicycle racing, that I guess would make it really a book not just for Dummies!

This book was well organized and very readable. I read it preceeding the Tour and even tho I've watched the Tour for several years now I still learned some things I didn't know before. I probably will read it again next year as it's one of those books where you seem to be able to pick up something each time you read it. This book has enhanced my enjoyment of the Tour.

I have had this little word guide since buying it at the bookstore in college back in the 70s. It has been such a handy little book! I have used it over and over through the years and now my children use it too. It sits on a shelf just above the computer in my office and is very worn from use. I have been looking to buy another copy for several years and couldn't find it until now. I am buying two new copies today!

An invaluable spelling resource! I use it more than daily and it contains most of the words that I use in writing (when in doubt I go to my handy dictionary). In addition the book also contains: common abbreviations, proofreader's marks, a punctuation guide (boy is this handy), and a table of weights and measures conversions. A truly useful tool!
