Organizational Stress: A Review and Critique of Theory, Research, and Applications (Foundations for Organizational Science)
Cary L. Cooper , Philip J. Dewe , and Michael P. O'Driscoll Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0761914811 Release Date: 2001-02-06 |
Book Description
To the individual whose health or happiness has been ravaged by an inability to cope with the effects of job-related stress, the costs involved are clear. But what price do organizations and nations pay for a poor fit between people and their work environments? Only recently has stress been seen as a contributory factor to the productivity and health costs of companies and countries but as studies of stress-related illnesses and deaths show, stress imposes a high cost on individual health and well-being as well as organizational productivity.
This book examines stress in organizational contexts. The authors review the sources and outcomes of job-related stress, the methods used to assess levels and consequences of occupational stress, along with the strategies that might be used by individuals and organizations to confront stress and its associated problems. One chapter is devoted to examining an extreme form of occupational stress – burnout, which has been found to have severe consequences for individuals and their organizations. The book closes with a discussion of scenarios for jobs and work in the new millennium, and the potential sources of stress that these scenarios may generate
The book is a comprehensive, thought-provoking resource for Ph.D. students, academics, and other professionals working to minimize or eliminate the sources of stress in the workplace.

Insect Timing: Circadian Rhythmicity to Seasonality
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 044450608X |
Book Description
Leading experts in the field bring together diverse aspects of insect timing mechanisms. This work combines three topics that are central to the understanding of biological timing in insects: circadian rhythms, photoperiodism, and diapause. The common theme underlining each of the contributions to this book is an understanding of the timing of events in the insect life cycle. Most daily activities (emergence, feeding, mating, egg laying, etc.) undertaken by insects occur at precise times each day. Likewise, seasonal events such as the entry into or termination from an overwintering dormancy (diapause) occur at distinct times of the year. This book documents such events and provides an up-to-date interpretation of the molecular and physiological events undergirding these activities.
The study of circadian rhythms has undergone a flowering in recent years with the molecular dissection of the components of the circadian clock. Now that many of the clock genes have been identified it is possible to track daily patterns of clock-related mRNAs and proteins to link the entraining light cycles with molecular oscillations within the cell. Insect experiments have led the way in demonstrating that the concept of a "master clock" can no longer be used to explain the temporal organization within an animal. Insects have a multitude of cellular clocks that can function independently and retain their function under organ culture conditions, and they thus offer a premier system for studying how the hierarchical organization of clocks results in the overall temporal organization of the animal. Photoperiodism, and its most obvious manifestation, diapause, does not yet have the molecular underpinning that has been established for circadian rhythms, but recent studies are beginning to identify genes that appear to be involved in the regulation of diapause. Overall, the book presents the rich diversity of challenges and opportunities provided by insects for the study of timing mechanisms.

It covers a wide range of topics, such as schooling, work, gender, socialization of children, and health. This solid treatment of basic concepts applicable in the study of all behavior and social sciences lets students see that the study of culture and cultural differences is inherently connected to the other courses they will take throughout their college careers.Customer Reviews:

Brislin makes it easy.......2004-01-11
Dr. Brislin uses an easy to follow format which is loaded with excellent analogies, making complex topics understandable.
My only negative comment would be for the publisher. As this book is used as a text, the selection of print paper was poor. Highlighters bleed through from one page to the next which makes spotting important information difficult on review.
Excelent! Academic but Readable. Suitable as textbook........1999-11-10

Understanding Behaviorism: Science, Behavior, and Culture (Behavior Analysis and Society)
William M. Baum Manufacturer: HarperCollins Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0065002865 |
Customer Reviews:
Superb account of why behaviorism matters.......2004-04-22
Behaviorism's basis in pragmatism is presented and grounds the entire study. That focus on what works helps makes sense of Behaviorism's emphasis on determinism. Recognition of cause and effect is necessary for any science, even one of human behavior, but that is a pragmatic necessity and hence Behaviorism need not take a position on whether determinism is ultimately true.
Another closely-related theme of Behaviorism is well-covered here, namely the dangers of mentalism. Relying on invented stories or inventing them yourself is a great way to waste years or even a lifetime. One of the big contributions of Behaviorisms is in recognizing mentalisms and providing sound alternative explanations.
Behaviorism's study of verbal behaviors including rule-governed behavior, thinking in general and problem-solving in particular are especially well introduced by Baum. Skinner's "Verbal Behavior" is about 450 pages long and may be tough going without help; Baum covers the basics of verbal behavior in about 30 pages, then uses that effectively in later discussions such as that of human relationships.
One part I found helpful was the discussion of grammar and syntax, which compares the Behaviorist understanding to that of linguists such as Chomsky, who introduce, as a Behaviorist would say, the mentalism of an innate grammar capability. The Behaviorist alternative seems plausible as does its criticism of Chomsky in this regards. This seems an excellent topic upon which to see the difference between Behaviorist and cognitive approaches. Baum notes that Behaviorism does not reject the supplementary role of some truly scientific areas that contribute to cognitive "science" such as brain science, but he sees a lasting place for Radical Behaviorism as a science of behavior.
About 40% of the book is devoted to the Behaviorist understanding of social issues such as exploitation and cultural design. This section builds faithfully on material introduced earlier in the book.
A list of books for "Further Reading" is given at the end of each chapter, each with a sentence explaining its significance. Not only Behaviorist books but also those by opposing authors are included.
This is a meaty overview, with good examples and good attention to the philosophical implications of the Behaviorist views. I expect it would be useful as a introductory text on Behaviorism or as a good way to pull together what one may have read from Skinner and other Behaviorists.
good for review or clarification.......2000-07-16
If you've already learned some behaviorism, this is a good resource for review or clarification.
This book is about the *philosophy* of behaviorism, its concepts and assumptions. It is NOT a behavior analysis book -- it won't tell you how to make your child stop bedwetting or your dog quit smoking, except in the most general way.
Any student of psychology needs to understand behaviorism. This is a prime resource. Brief, concise, a fairly painless read.

Competition and Resource Partitioning in Temperate Ungulate Assemblies (Wildlife Ecology and Behaviour Series, Vol 3)
R.J. Putman Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0412785706 |
Book Description
Rory Putman addresses the question of how, in many temporate ecosystems, diverse and species-rich assemblies of ungulates manage to co-exist despite often quite extensive overlap in ecological requirements. Putman explores the potential for competition, competition tolerance and even positive facilitation amongst the members of such guilds of ungulates. As a central worked example, the author employs data resulting from over 20 years of personal research into the ecology and population dynamics of various large herbivores of the New Forest in Southern England. With these, he applies formal protocols in resource use, evidence for resource limitation and evidence for interaction between species in changing population size over the years.

A Sea-Tinged Madness.......2004-03-16
Crowhurst's early years are well-documented and give us a picture of a driven and compulsive man with some serious character flaws and an aversion to failure. Yet failure was a condition which dogged him throughout his life.
Crowhurst's decision to undertake the circumnavigation was both dramatic and ill-considered. With relatively little sailing experience and a lot of bluff he convinced his sponsors to fund the building of a revolutionary trimaran, the "Teignmouth Electron" equipped with all manner of electronic wizardry (Crowhurst had invented a sort of early GPS, the Navicator, in the mid-60's).
Unfortunately, the "Teignmouth Electron" was never properly completed, the race deadline having intervened, and Crowhurst sailed in a boat that was unfinished, poorly provisioned, and untested, having done miserably in what passed for sea trials.
Setting out on the latest possible day, Crowhurst found himself limping along at a ridiculously slow pace three weeks later. Plagued by equipment failures, the "Teignmouth Electron" was taking water due to design flaws, and had no real chance of completing the race. Having staked all on a successful outcome, the tension and isolation of his predicament attacked Crowhurst's mind.
In a fit of brilliant madness, Donald Crowhurst spent hours working out and logging false positions, sun sights, weather reports, and sailing notations to make it seem he was circling the earth while in fact he meandered pointlessly through the South Atlantic for months. He even secretly put in to port for repairs, a fact which was not discovered until after the race, when his "real" logs were reviewed by investigators.
Crowhurst's position reports and daily runs were diligently reported onshore; he was (falsely) credited with a record run of 243 miles in one day, a record he actually matched in reality once he decided to begin sailing in earnest again.
In the meantime, for all the world knew, Crowhurst was going to be the winner of the Golden Globe. As he turned toward home, the media hoopla grew wilder, and so did his delusions. His log entries degenerated into irrational philosophic and religious ramblings in which he began to believe himself God. In the end, tortured by his demons and consumed by guilt, Donald Crowhurst jumped into the sea, leaving his boat to sail on without him.
Brilliantly and sensitively written, without tendering excuses the authors Tomalin and Hall never lose sight of the essential humanity and frailty of their subject, as well as his consuming but undirected brilliance. Relying heavily on Crowhurst's logs, it is devastating to watch the man's mind unravel in the face of his aloneness.
Crowhurst's singlemindedness got him far, but it ultimately proved his undoing as he was unable to see any but the options he had limited himself to, the ultimate one being his own destruction. As Camus wrote, "In the end there is but one serious philosophical question, and that is suicide." Crowhurst's answer is his legacy.
Aquatic madness.......2003-08-23
The fascination of the book lies with Crowhurst. Here is a man who made a couple of wrong turns in life and just kept on going. A man who may, like many of us, have lived a long life had he not taken to the sea in a white elephant on a goose chase.
Tomalin and Hall had access to Crowhurst's logs and, through them, his thinking - however fuzzy that may be. From this, they constructed a well-written and gripping true-life novel.
FYI, The Teignmouth Electron now lies on a beach near a liquor store on the island of Cayman Brac.

It's good, but a few flaws that are easily remedied........2006-03-30
I think it'a a great book.......2003-06-15
But this book has some great stuff for learning japanese. I'd reccomend it, I think even someone from Jr High could learn from this book. (As I am, and I did.)
It works.......2003-02-10
The book gets right to the point, without lengthy grammar lessons, linguistic theory, or other complicated nonsense. As the title says, this book will help you "Speak Japanese Today." You will not be able to teach Japanese, write in Japanese, or be able to communicate in an eloquent fashion, but you will know enough material well enough to handle everyday situations.
Thus, this book's optimal audience is anyone who needs a crash-course in Japanese: a student, tourist, or businessman.
To those who want an in-depth study of Japanese, this book can only serve as a somewhat inadequate introduction - but then, in-depth study is not this book's purpose at all.
Great, but how exactly are those words pronounced?.......2001-07-13
Nonetheless, the book poses some key challenges and limitations. Foremost, without an accompanying CD or tape, the pronounciations of the words are simply not conveyed correctly through English language phonetics. As a result, beginners are highly likely to cultivate incorrect pronounciation habits early on in their learning experience.
Second, in the latter half of the book, practice sentences are rote...different words are used in the same sentence structures. While this system promotes practice, the student gains very little from all of the example sentences.
Finally, several words are listed in the lessons. Most of them, however, are never used. Perhaps dropping some of the rote sentences and creating new sentences with these additional words would enhance value to the student.
Overall, this book is an essential addition to the library of every serious student of Japanese. It makes an excellent supplement to classroom learning or to an audio learning system.

Book Description
Romance and adventure and a sunlit seathe stuff that dreams are made ofinspire a major new series from Thames & Hudson. The most magical islands of the Mediterranean are beautifully evoked by renowned photojournalist Jeremy Horner in the first volume of this series. Some, like Capri, are already well known; others, like Croatian Vis, are just entering the consciousness of island travelers.
"Velvet-green, rimmed with golden sands, and set in shallow turquoise waters" is Jeremy Horner's description of the islands off the coast of Dalmatia. Here, Brionionce the private home of President Titois now one of the region's most exclusive hideaways. Hvar, a verdant ridge rising out of the Adriatic, was an outpost of the Venetian empire and enjoys a legacy of elegant architecture, as does neighboring Korcula, sometimes referred to as "Little Dubrovnik."
The main islands of the Bay of NaplesCapri and Ischiahave always been attractive to travelers from northern Europe and America, and all their delights are fully reflected in this book. But what of Procida, whose colorful fishing port of Corricella became famous as the setting for the film Il Postino? Equally fascinating and lively are the Pontine, Aeolian, and Egadi Islands.
Corfu, Rhodes, and Mykonos have been included from the galaxy of Greek island gems, but so too have delicious Santorini and less familiar Zakynthos, an Ionian paradise of white beaches, towering cliffs, and blue caves.
Whether the desire is for an unspoiled coastline (Gozo), escape from the obvious (Djerba off the coast of Tunisia), Riviera sophistication without the accompanying overdevelopment (Porquerolles), or a Spanish interlude (Majorca and Ibiza), everyone's dreams will be fully satisfied here. 200 color photographs.
