Book Description

In this timely and controversial book, economist Deepak Lal explores the twin themes of empires and globalization and discusses the place of the US in the current world order. Lal argues that not since the fall of the Roman empire has there been a potential imperial power like the United States today, and asks the question: Is a US imperium needed for the globalization which breeds prosperity? What form should this empire take? Would US domestic politics support this? Would the US tendency to see itself as a moral nation pursuing "universal values" such as democracy, equality and rights run into resistance from other non-western Christian societies? The US has already faced hostile coalitions. What is the history and nature of resistance to US hegemony? Lal explores the Islamic threat to the position of the US and the current "war on terror."

Why we need empires
Andrew Roberts

Deepak Lal is the nephew of a former mayor of Delhi and Nehru cabinet minister who was imprisoned by the British. Lal is himself a former Indian foreign-service diplomat, Oxford economics don, research administrator for the World Bank, the author of 19 books, and professor of international development at UCLA. He began life believing in the socialist and nationalist ideologies of post-independence India, and so is the ideal person to write a book with the title In Praise of Empires.

"It is evidence and experience," Lal says, "especially in working and travelling in most parts of the Third World during my professional career, which have led me to change my earlier views." In only 216 pages of tautly written, sharply worded and frankly exhilarating text, Lal sets out the case for imperialism in the modern world, and why the United States could bring untold benefits to the planet if only it could shrug off the notion, held ever since the Revolutionary War-era, that empires are bad things per se.

"The order provided by empires," Lal argues, "has been essential for the working of the benign processes of globalisation, which promote prosperity." This splendidly revisionist statement is supported by a wealth of evidence and acutely chosen statistical tables, backed up by an impressive range of sources from fellow intellectuals. Drawing on the ideas of Raymond Aron, Hedley Bull, Niall Ferguson, Michael Oakeshott and many others, Lal none the less constructs his own analysis of where the English-speaking peoples have been, where we're headed and what might happen if we choose not to go there.

As one would expect from such a distinguished scholar, Lal defines his terms carefully, thus: "Globalization is the process of creating a common economic space which leads to a growing integration of the world economy through increasingly free movement of goods, capital and labour," something that he believes is almost always "a positive sum game". Modern America can choose to go down the route of free trade and laissez-faire, thereby enriching the world as well as itself, or it can stick with the New Deal-era populist anti-trust legislation and trade-reciprocity that Lal believes impoverishes both the world and the United States itself.

"Not since the fall of the Roman Empire has there been a potential imperial power like the US today," Lal states, and the role that has been thrust upon her by History, one that she must not now shirk, is to create what he calls a "LIEO", a Liberal International Economic Order. The main attributes of the LIEO imposed by the British in the 19th century were free trade, free mobility of capital, sound money due to the gold standard, property rights guaranteed by law, piracy-free transportation thanks to the Royal Navy, political stability, low domestic taxation and spending, and "gentlemanly" capitalism run from the City of London. "Despite Marxist and nationalist cant," Lal writes, the British empire delivered astonishing growth rates, at least in those places fortunate enough to be coloured pink on the globe.

The great villain of this book is President Woodrow Wilson, whose "utopian world view was a strange mixture of classical liberalism, Burkean conservatism, Presbyterianism, and socialism". It was a combination that propelled Wilson towards giving self-determination to ethnic groupings that had not enjoyed it for centuries, with ultimately disastrous results. Lal also blames Wilson's vandalism of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires in 1919 for creating the circumstances that allowed the rise of Hitler.

To invert Dean Acheson's famous quip about post-Suez Britain, America has found an empire but has yet to find a role. Republicans and Democrats both shun the term "empire" as profoundly un-American, despite the fact that it represents a potentially far higher historic calling than the merely nation-based ideals of 1776. Lal rejects the neo-conservative project of extending democracy throughout the globe, arguing that experience shows that in places like Iran and Algeria it will be used to promote Islamic nihilism and obscurantism. For him modernity - by which he means economic globalisation and enforced order - is the touchstone, and the perfect way for America both to defeat al-Qaeda and to earn the enduring salute of History. Imperialism is an idea whose time has come again.

      Book Description

The institutional theory of organizations developed by Scott, Meyer and their colleagues over the past two decades has had an enormous impact on organizational theory and research. In this book, the editors review the major theoretical advances of the past decade and the empirical testing they have done on these theories. Their work has highlighted two key themes: the interrelationship between organizational complexity and the institutional environment; and the place of the individual within the organization.

        Book Description

This book describes the application of statistics, economics and mathematical modeling to the control of bird and mammal pests. It is about how scientists have analyzed whether vertebrates are pests and what is achieved by control. The book distinguishes itself from other books on the topic by emphasizing the science behind vertebrate pest control rather than methods of control. Dr. Hone critically reviews the literature on topics such as damage assessment and control evaluation and makes links to ecology, epidemiology, fisheries management and economics. The text includes case studies of many mammalian and avian pests in a worldwide scope.

Culled from forty years of writing by the founder of psychoanalysis, A Primer Of Freudian Psychology introduces Freud's theories on the dynamics and development of the human mind. Hall also provides a brief biography of Sigmund Freud and examines how he arrived at his groundbreaking conclusions. In discussing the elements that form personality, the author explains the pioneer thinker's ideas on defense mechanisms, the channeling of instinctual drives, and the role of sex in male and female maturation. Lucid, illuminating, and instructive, this is an important book for all who seek to understand human behavior, in themselves and others.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative, but a little dry.......2006-05-12

This book is very informative, but the author's style of writing is very, very dry! It was very difficult for everybody, teacher included, in my Lit&Psych class to read through more than one chapter at a time. I would not recommend this book for leisure reading. Despite its downfalls, this book is a great way to get a broad overview of Freud's theories condensed into one small, inexpensive, light-weight package.

2 out of 5 stars A little hard to read; but still eduactional........2005-03-16

Basically this book is an outline of Freud's major aspects that make up the dynamics of personality. What it has to say is that there is a constant flow of energy that runs through the body that makes up the personallity. When people are bombarded by their sense experience energy is sent through out the body this energy is picked up by the three things that Freud claimed make up the personnality; these three elements of personnality are the Id, the Ego, and the Superego.

Each of these elements serves a different purpose in the development of personnality, and the three of them together make up the personality. From Freud's theory of personality and how energy flows throughout it one can derive all of his theories on personality disorders, dreams, and defense mechanism to name a few of the things he formulated theories on.

I found this book very hard to read. The purpose of this book is to make an outline of freuds theories. It felt as I was reading this that one would have to have some psychology background to fully understand this book.

This is an important book for everyone who wants to understand human behavior in himself, and in others.

Calvin S. Hall outlines Freud's diagnosis of the balances existing between the mind and emotions, and points out his important discoveries about the parts played by instincts, the conscious and unconscious, and anxiety in the functioning of the human psyche.
The Author explains the ideas of Sigmund Freud's psychology on defense mechanisms, the channeling of instinctual drives, and the role of sex in the boy/girl maturing into man and women.

Sigmund Freud's ideas are scattered throughout his writings from the early 1890's to the late 1930's. The stabilized personality is one in which the psychic energy has found more or less permanent and constant ways of expending itself in performing psychological work. The precise nature of this work is determined by the interactions, between them, and by the developmental history of the id, ego and the superego.

The breakdown of the personality follows:

        The ID:
Sometimes called the "pleasure principle" is to rid the person of tension, or, reduce the amount of tension to a low level and to keep it as constant as possible. Tension is experienced as pain or discomfort, while relief from tension is experienced as pleasure or satisfaction, avoiding pain, and finding pleasure.

        The EGO:
Instead of the "pleasure principle", the ego is governed by the "reality principle". Reality means that which exists. The aim of the "reality principle", is to postpone the discharge of energy until the actural object that will satisfy the need has been discovered or produced. The ego may be thought of as a complex organization of Psychological processes that acts as an intermediary between the id, and the external World. This is called the "secondary process", because it is developed after, and overlays the primary process of the id.

        The SUPEREGO:
The superego is made up of two subsystems, the ego-ideal, and the conscience. The ego-ideal corresponds to the child's conception of what his parents consider to be morally good. The conscience corresponds to the child's conceptions of what the parents feel is morally bad, and these are established through experiences with punishment. So, ego-ideal and conscience are opposite sides of the same coin. The ego is formed out of the id, and the superego is formed out of the ego. They continue to interact and blend with each other throughout life.

        The Dynamics of Personality:
The following list is used in the book to show how the three systems operate and how they interact with one another, and with the environment.

Psychic Energy: is the form of energy which operates the three systems of personality.

Instinct: is an inborn condition which imparts direction to psychological processes. An instinct has a source, an aim, an object, and an impetus. (strength or force)

The Distribution and Disposal Of Psychic Energy: The aim of both of these processes is to expend the instinctual energy in ways that will elimate the need, and bring repose to the individual.

Cathexis and Anti-cathexis: The urging forces are cathexes, and the checking forces are anti-cathexis. The id has only cathexis while the ego and superego also posses anti-cathexis.
If the anti-cathexis outweigh the cathexis, the action, or the thought will be repressed.

Consciousness and unconsciousness: Conscious and unconscious are retained in psychologanalytic theory after 1920 as qualities of mental phemomena.

The Instincts: Life, death, sex, Instincts

Anxiety: Anxiety is a painful emotional experience which is produced by excitations in the internal organs of the body. Anxiety is one of the most important concepts in psychoanalytic theory. It plays an important role in the development of personality functioning.
Three types of anxiety are reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety.
The first time I came accross this book was when I took Applied Psychology with Dr. Harrison, which was along time ago. I really do like this book, and it has alot of understanding of the personality.

Well, I say understanding, but it gives the reader appreication of the breakdown of the id, ego and the superego. As it states in the beginning, it is very useful in understanding yourself, and others you may work with. It will help me in the Substance Abuse Field, when I am not only working with clients, but also in group therapy.

                                    Description:
Didemnum sp. A is a colonial ascidian with rapidly expanding populations on the east and west coasts of North America. The origin of Didemum sp. A is unknown. Populations were first observed on the northeast coast of the U.S. in the late 1980s and on the west coast during the 1990s. It is currently undergoing a massive population explosion and is now a dominant member of many subtidal communities on both coasts. To determine Didemnum sp. A's current distribution, we conducted surveys from Maine to Virginia on the east coast and from British Columbia to southern California on the west coast of the U.S. between 1998 and 2005. In nearshore locations Didemnum sp. A currently ranges from Eastport, Maine to Shinnecock Bay, New York on the east coast. On the west coast it has been recorded from Humboldt Bay to Port San Luis in California, several sites in Puget Sound, Washington, including a heavily fouled mussel culture facility, and several sites in southwestern British Columbia on and adjacent to oyster and mussel farms. The species also occurs at deeper subtidal sites (up to 81 m) off New England, including Georges, Stellwagen and Tillies Banks. On Georges Bank numerous sites within a 230 km^2 area are 50-90% covered by Didemnum sp. A; large colonies cement the pebble gravel into nearly solid mats that may smother infaunal organisms. These observations suggest that Didemnum sp. A has the potential to alter marine communities and affect economically important activities such as fishing and aquaculture.

                                      Description:
Flounder were exposed to waterborne phenanthrene (0.5, 1 and 2 @mM) for 4 weeks to test effects of waterborne phenanthrene on growth and hematological properties of the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). The average weight gain (WG) of flounder was significantly decreased in fish exposed to phenanthrene at 2.0 @mM for 2 weeks, whereas WGs of fish treated by 1.0 and 2.0 @mM phenanthrene for 4 weeks were significantly decreased. However, hepatosomatic index (HSI) and condition factor (CF) of flounder were not significantly affected by phenanthrene exposure. Red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, hematocrit (Ht), the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) mean levels were decreased with an increase in exposure time of phenanthrene to the fish, but the level of the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was increased. Plasma bilirubin concentrations were significantly increased following exposure to waterborne phenanthrene (2.0 @mM) for 2 and 4 weeks; however, there were no significant changes in plasma total cholesterol in fish of all treated groups compared to control. The phenanthrene-exposed groups (>=1.0 @mM) showed significantly higher mean plasma lysozyme activity. Kidney lysozyme activity of fish exposed to phenanthrene (>=1.0 @mM) was also significantly higher than that of control fish. The central finding from these data is that olive flounder exposed to waterborne phenanthrene at more than 1.0 @mM are likely to experience negative impacts on fish health and basic physiological functions.

I don't want to completely dis any book. After all, lots of work goes into a book, even one that doesn't have the ring of truth.

3 out of 5 stars Worthy of Consideration.......2005-01-24

I selected this book based on the recommendations of a knowledgeable handicapping friend who has been applying the methods of Michael Pizzolla for several years. The book teaches Michael Pizzolla's methods of pace and speed handicapping.

There are several tools which are described, some of which I have seen by other names from other authors and some of which are novel. The book is over 400 pages long, however like so many handicapping books, there is a lot of space wasted showing DRF entries and charts for the same races over and over again. The book also makes frequent references to software and other handicapping aids marketed by Michael Pizzolla.

Novel concepts presented include concept of fulcrum pace (and horse) and form cycle windows which are not treated elsewhere. These concepts can be applied to narrow a field of contenders and eliminate horses from consideration. The approaches are selection oriented and there is little treatment of value.

The book would be useful for someone looking for mechanical systems which they might use to select horses for various conditions.

1 out of 5 stars one born every minute.......2004-08-05

Mr Pizzolla is a clever fellow. It is my guess that he is making more money from selling his "methodologies" than from his betting action. Ask yourself, if someone really has a successful approach, why would he share it? Surely, someone as intelligent as Pizzolla would have learned from the storied experience of Andrew Beyer (who brought down the odds on the horses he would bet by publishing his method).

So, either Pizzolla is more interested in talking (writing) about what to do than doing it. Or flat out can not make a living with his own insights. I have read the online reviews and come to the conclusion that those raving about being winners are mistaking luck for skill.

                                              Buyer beware.

Incorporates a number of techniques to give you a fighting chance at the betting window. A must read and re-read for the horseplayer.

This is a decent general introduction to a system that is really nothing more than a variant of Pace Handicapping. It is a fun read, although sometimes the author seems a bit enamored with his sense of humor referring, for example, to horses as "pigs."

If you really want a complete understanding of Pace Handicapping, you will need to plow through Brohamer's book.

                                              Book Description

For anyone who will ever face a sea of expectantly raised glasses, or anyone who is fascinated by words and word-play, this rich compendium of toasts for every occasion will prove as entertaining as it is useful.

The best toasts ever proclaimed (and a few of the worst), funny and sentimental toasts, cynical and heartfelt toasts, old-fashioned and contemporary toasts, justly famous and unjustly forgotten toasts ... they're all here in the latest compilation of verbal fun from wordsmith extraordinaire Paul Dickson. Impossible to put down when browsing and easy to use when looking something up, it's one of those books that will never gather dust on the shelf.

Weddings, graduations, anniversaries, births (and birthdays), family reunions, business dinners, and other occasions are all included, along with tips for the toastmaster, ways to says "Cheers!" in fifty languages from Albanian to Zulu, and other toasting topics.

                                              Salud!

I drink to your health when I'm with you,

I drink to your health when I'm alone,

I drink to your health so often

I'm beginning to worry about my own.

Here's to good-byes -- that they never be spoken!

Here's to friendships -- may they never be broken!

Drink to the girls and drink to their mothers,

                                              Drink to their fathers and to their brothers;

Toast their dear healths as long as you're able,

And dream of their charms while you're under the table.

Early to rise and early to bed makes a male healthy and wealthy and dead.

                                              -- James Thurber

I used to know a clever toast,

But pshaw! I cannot think it --

So fill your glass to anything

And, bless your souls, I'll drink it.

In an age when some of us fear the loss of gentility, Toasts reminds that there are those who still covet proper comportment.

Toasts provided me the perfect words to use at my parents' 50th anniversary, and I use it routinely as a reference prior to business dinners and other gatherings where I know I'll be called upon for the honors.

5 out of 5 stars "One sip of this will bathe the drooping spirits . . .".......2001-02-21

This is a fantastic resource, the best single source on toasting which I have ever come across. The introduction and "Brief History of Raised Glasses" provides a brief, gentle, and highly useful education so that you can oh so suavely back up immediately any question or challenge to the quote you've chosen from this cornucopia of highly organized toasts for just about any occasion imaginable.

The illustrations are superfluous, but the footnotes are very, very useful. At first glance a bit pedantic, they allow the user of the toast to speak (and understand) the traditional language, such as "stook," "murphies," and "banns." The different subject areas, plainly intuitive, and listed alphabetically in the table of contents include such further instructive chapters as "Hints for Effective Toasting," "Odd Customs," a "Selected Toast and Tipple Glossary," and "Skoaling." The different subject areas are also modestly cross-referenced to each other, such as the entry "see also 'friendship;' 'general;' 'guests'" concluding the "Hosts and Hostesses" section. There is also a useful bibliography.

What is missing and would have completed the book would be an index. This is my only complaint with this superb, and in my case oft-used little reference.

Like a real pro, Paul Dickson has produced, actually concocted, a rich compendium of examples and answers to any query and questions about toasting and hosting. Getting a copy even helped me articulate my sincere attestations when I entertain a few close friends and acquaintances in my modest home; though frequently with coffee or irish cream or shandy, seldom with wine.

Dickson does not preach, he guides and suggests. As your reading progresses, you easily learn, comprehend and take heart what is appropriate if perfect, and then sense what to avoid or perceive what is uncalled for when giving someone or something a toast.

This book is not only amusing. It's a deliciously entertaining and concrete fount of infos and references for fledgling hosts and party impresarios. I read my copy cover to cover and felt like popping the champagne and making the wine glasses clink! For Amazon --- I've changed my e-mail address from wsimple@yahoo to w_waif@yahoo

I bartended (part time) for years and heard a lot of toasts, but no one could explain the origin of toasting. A customer bought me this book and all my questions were answered.

The text is simple and easy to follow. If you are looking for a toast for a particular situation, just go to the category index in the front pages and thumb your way through.

You will laugh, you will learn, you may even get a little grossed out. But all in all, if you love history and you entertain or like to be the life of the party, this is a great buy. I recommend it highly.

                                                Book Description

"Fred Lebow was a dreamer, the kind of dreamer who pursued his dream and made it a reality. And the world is still reaping the rewards." So begins this uplifting chronicle of a humbly born Holocaust survivor who parlayed natural marketing smarts - and a vision - into a major position in recent American sports. He started the New York City Marathon, an event that transformed footracing from an elite, austere sport into a wildly applauded, attainable pursuit.

Forging a path across the city's five boroughs, the Marathon covers a daunting 26.2-mile course. Ron Rubin's fascinating book tells how Lebow popularized the race. With a stroke of marketing wizardry he turned it into the world's largest block party: a gritty mix of urban theater and kindly entrepreneurship. It honored the spirit of the moment, imbued competition with joy, and celebrated play. In so doing, it put winning within the realm of every man and woman became a race for all runners. Lebow mainstreamed the notion of marathoning into popular culture; some half million Americans now run marathons. Finally, the book describes how Lebow scored his greatest personal victory by racing in the marathon he had created even after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

While the subject is quiet interesting, the book is poorly written and edited. The author keeps on repeating himself over and over and over and over again. And again. One is reminded of college papers where a student is stretching a 2 page point over 10 pages to fulfill the length requirement, constantly restating the same thought with synonymous nouns and adjectives. Could have been a much more fun 150 page read with some good editing, or a great 10 page New Yorker article. The book does improve in the second half.

"ANYTHING for a T-Shirt" captures Fred's character as an artist might do with a brush and paint. While describing Fred's life, the author delves into his motivation and goals. He skillfully shows how Fred Lebow, an immigrant from Romania, progresses to developing the most exciting mass participation sporting event in the world.

If you run, read this book! This is the best book ever written on Fred Lebow and marathon running.

5 out of 5 stars From the Editor.......2004-11-18

I got to "meet" Fred Lebow and learn about his creation of the New York City Marathon and his impact on the world of distance running while working with author Ron Rubin's extensive material. "Fred Lebow was a dreamer...the kind of dreamer who pursued his dream and made it a reality. And today, more than thirty years later, the world is still reaping the rewards of his vision and hard work.... Fred Lebow's life was [truly] a story just waiting--and deserving--to be told." -- From the book's Preface.

Exactly what Fred's vision was and how he worked to bring it to fruition--the history of the marathoning culture as we know it today--is developed in the first 11 chapters of the book.

                                                > According to KATHRINE SWITZER, who knew Lebow well:
"Lebow's lifetime creation, the New York City Marathon, parallels his life story, and nobody's told it better than Ron Rubin in 'Anything for a T-Shirt...'. Rubin shows us how this modest but complex man, who was himself exhilarated with the transforming effects of fitness, took an obscure footrace and turned it into an extravagant festival that brought joy to the world's most glamorous and competitive city and attracted millions of everyday people to distance running. It is a case study in sports marketing, event management and psychology..."

The remainder of the book is dedicated to the heartwarming story of Lebow's struggle with cancer and his momentous first running of his own marathon in 1992 -- a cancer survivor accompanied by a host of friends led by Grete Waitz.

                                                > SWITZER's review of these final chapters states:
"The book's climax is superb, reeling the reader up very dramatically, day by day, then mile by mile. Rubin pulls no punches as to how Fishl-the name I always called him and the one he would return to before he died-ran in his own creation for the first time, between bouts with the brain cancer that eventually took him from us, on guts and will. 'Anything' paints a vivid picture of Lebow's inherent survival determination, heard from a dozen concerned voices in his entourage. While the whole book is well-written, this chapter is dazzling."

As Dick Traum wrote in his amazon review, "If you run, read this book!" As a non-runner who had never heard of Fred Lebow before working with the book, I can add:

"EVEN IF YOU DON'T RUN, read this book." I came to know both Fred & Fishl through the eyes of the 120-plus people Dr. Rubin interviewed and the numerous authors of articles and stories written during Lebow's illustrious life and in his memory. His life is an uplifting story of hope and inspiration.

Everything I've heard so far indicates that this book is truly the inspiring, motivating & heartwarming tribute to Fred Lebow that Ron Rubin set out to create. A relatively non-athletic, academic-type university professor, Rubin is himself one of the millions of middle- and back-of-the-pack runners who would have never considered attempting a marathon had it not been for Lebow's "creation." He wound up running NY six times!

I look forward to reading what YOU think -- about my review and about the book!
