Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quality book - great summary.......2006-01-09

This book gives a good summary of several important concepts related to the financial markets. It is a truly introductory level book but it is highly recommended if you are looking for a complete overview to fill up the gaps in your basic knowledge. Highly readable, even for people without a formal background in economoy but with a basic practical knowledge of the financial markets.
One negative point concerns paragraphs where the history of certain concepts is described or where practical examples are given, applying to different countries in the world : these are often too elaborated without any clear added value.
This book is also recommended by 'The Economist' magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Apparently this book rocks........2004-02-21

When an engineering student completely unfamiliar with economics can use this book to prepare a comprehensive collection of lectures for a large group of Ph.D.-level students in Beijing during the transcontinental flight, it is obvious that this book is extremely capable of teaching. Read the news article:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/02/19/nchina19.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/02/19/ixnewstop.html

However, that makes you question the complexity of the profession and the necessity of the professors teaching it, because if someone can effectively become an expert one a plane trip, it can't be that complicated. That, or Mr. Valdez is a genius who knows how to take something enormously complex and transform it into something incredibly simple.

4 out of 5 stars Truly introductory.......2003-10-01

Although the book by Valdez is truly introductory it does give a good overview of financial markets. It is a pity that Black and Scholes' model or binomial trees are mentioned as too difficult. Different option strategies are mentioned but not explained. One or two graphs would have made it a lot clearer, but as the writer indicates on several occasions, that is outside the scope of this book. For a more thorough understanding of financial markets this book is a good introduction but not enough to really get a good idea.

Book Description

In 1937, Ronald H. Coase published "The Nature of the Firm," a classic paper that raised fundamental questions about the concept of the firm in economic theory. Coase proposed that the comparative costs of organizing transactions through markets rather than within firms are the primary determinants of the size and scope of firms. Coase won the 1991 Nobel Prize in Economics for this work. This volume derives from a conference held in 1987 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Coase's classic article. The first chapter affords an overview of the volume. It is followed by a republication of the 1937 article, and by the three lectures Coase presented at the conference. These lectures provide a lively and informative history of the origins and development of his thought. Subsequent chapters explore a wide-range of theoretical and empirical issues that have arisen in the transaction cost economic tradition. They illustrate the power of the transaction cost approach to enhance understanding not only of business firms, but of problems of economic organization generally. In addition to Coase's work, contributors include Sherwin Rosen, Paul Joskow, Oliver Hart, Harold Demsetz, Scott Masten, Benjamin Klein, as well as the volume's editors, Oliver E. Williamson, and Sidney G. Winter. The Nature of the Firm includes Coase's acceptance speech for his Nobel Prize in Economics.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point.......2003-08-23

This book serves as an excellent introduction to the transaction cost motivated theories of the firm. The whole field started with the 1937 paper by Coase, which one can find here. Three other papers by Coase give a good background on how he came to write that paper and what its implications and influences are. His Nobel lecture is also included. They all make a nice reading and clear up some misunderstandings about Coase's work. Coase is an excellent writer.

The other papers are very good too. I especially liked the one by Harold Demsetz. It points out that there are some important shortcomings to the transactionialist view and outlines a alternative theory of the firm.

Almost all papers can be read without much knowledge about economics and without math, so anyone with an interest in the topic should take a look.

4 out of 5 stars Readings on the "Firm".......2000-07-03

The papers imprinted there include Coase's "The Nature of the Firm" and his Nobel Lecture as well. The works of O. Williamson, O. Hart, S. Rosen, S. Winter, etc on the nature of the firm are also there.

One thing worth to note is that three of the papers are the lectures given by Coase in the 1987 conference (which is due to the 50th anniversery of the publication of his "The Nature of the Firm") are also included. The sub-title of this book speaks for itself.

But I don't know why Cheung's "The Contractual Nature of the Firm" is omitted.

      Book Description

While most gardeners aren't blessed with ideal soil to start with, it is possible to improve almost any site. This guide provides clear and practical information on making compost, taking soil samples, all-organic methods of feeding plants, dealing with poor drainage, choosing and using mulches effectively, and more.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not so Boring on a Boring Subject.......2000-08-06

This book is in the Taylor's Weekend Gardening Guides series of books. Like most books in this series, it is easy to read and understand. While it touches upon some of the science behind why good soil is important, it doesn't bore the average gardener with laborious explanations. It quickly gets to what most gardeners want to know, that is what to do to improve your soil's quality and have healthier plants.

Before you start a new garden it is important to understand the characteristics of your soil and what actions you need to take before you start planting. This book will provide the weekend gardener with all the guidance they need to build healthy soil in their garden. I highly recommend you read this book before you start planting your new garden.

      Book Description

According to author Frederick J. Lanceley, known as one of the world's foremost crisis negotiation authorities, negotiators must train and train regularly. For just as the legal field constantly evolves, so does the field of crisis negotiation. The new edition of his On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators reflects this fact. A bestseller in its first edition, this book offers practical advice with regard to the theory, procedures, and techniques of crisis and suicide intervention and hostage negotiation. Two new chapters cover negotiation with people under the influence of drugs or alcohol and how first responders can contain the situation until a negotiator can arrive. With a suicide intervention flow chart, a checklist for investigators assisting negotiators, and an on-scene guide for crisis negotiators, this indispensable book provides the tools you need to conduct successful negotiations and 'make nothing happen.'

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition To The Field.......2000-04-22

Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to provide techniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume is arranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part of every negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important points about this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faced daily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignored in many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition, the entire book is an interesting read. His account of his involvement at Ruby Ridge is fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in the field, police commanders and anyone interested in crisis intervention.

5 out of 5 stars On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators.......1999-12-07

Recently retired FBI Special Agent Fred Lanceley gives us the benefit of his expertise in this highly detailed book on the actions a crisis negotiator must take in the field. Lanceley describes techniques that will be of benefit to any police officet, tactical dispatcher, hostage negotiator or crisis counselor who is confronted with a barricaded subject, a mentally disturbed individual or a potential hostage taker. These people are encouraged to read Lanceley's book and to include it in your current training. Dave Larton, Member, California Association of Hostage Negotiators

          Product Description

Is it bedtime for America’s pastime? In recent years, action on and off the diamond has left some fans predicting baseball’s imminent death—or claiming to have already attended the funeral. This book refutes those claims with an in-depth look at baseball then and now. Comparing the baseball of the 1950s to the game of today, this author examines the widespread dissatisfaction with major league baseball, considers how modern teams differ from those of the past, and reflects on whether professional baseball remains a truly competitive sport. Excessive salaries, player movement and the evolution of the draft are all up for discussion, as is the Wild Card playoff format and how it has affected the overall competition. Tables show statistics on salaries, league attendance and the correlation between winning percentages and payroll. Appendices offer details on market size and attendance regressions. The facts and figures add up to a win for the long-lasting appeal of baseball.

          5 out of 5 stars Rumors of Baseball's Demise.......2006-03-15

An excellent book that challenges what used to be conventional wisdom about the health of baseball. Cull shows that pitching is the key to winning and that the amateur draft helps even the smallest teams obtain it. As a result, competitive balance in baseball hasn't suffered, even as salaries have increased. A great book to put on any fan's shelf.

This book has more information and is much easier to use than Peterson's. I found Peterson's useless, and I am purchasing this (I tried them both first at the library).

2 out of 5 stars Big but less than useful.......2004-06-14

There is a lot of info in this book, but I live in Washington and it only had info on 2 schools. A much better book is Peterson's Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities or ADD. It separates into 2 & 4 year schools and also direct or self-directed programs. The purpose of these books should be to give you some direction as to which schools have something, and ways to contact them for more info. Tons of data about fewer schools is not that helpful, which is how I see this book. All of these books would be even more useful if they included a CD or online search capability so you didn't have to try to scour thru a large written book.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic information re: only a relatively few colleges.......2003-02-09

I had hoped that _The K&W Guide to Colleges: For Students with Learning Disabilities or ADD_ would be useful in selecting an appropriate college for an LD kid. Unfortunately, it was not.

On the plus side, it contains basic information in an easy-to-use format. However, that positive is outweighed by the negative: it seems to only sample a few of the many colleges and universities in the US. E.g., UC-Berkeley is included but UC-Davis is not. (Most UC campuses, like most colleges and universities, are not.) However, the services provided at UCD are similar to those at UCB. Similarly, USF and USC are included but Mills College and Stanford are not, although the schools that are excluded seem to have the same kinds of services as those that are included. The same pattern occurs among two-year colleges.

I could find no explanation of why any given college was included or excluded. Without such understanding, the book seems like a random collection of colleges with very basic information about what types of services each provides. I don't see how it is helpful in selecting a college for someone with an LD or ADD unless you've already determined which colleges you'd like to attend and are fortunate enough to have all those colleges included in this book. Even then, most the information in this book would be readily available on most colleges' web sites, along with a wealth of useful information about accommodation that's not included. Therefore, I think that for most LD or ADD students, this book is not very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Parents of LD kids.......2002-02-05

I found this guide to be just what I was looking for. By reviewing the admissions procedures for LD kids, and seeing the number of staff a university devotes to assisting students with disabilities I am able to direct my son to schools that can best help him. I was very encouraged to find the University of Arizona and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill among major colleges with strong programs. I bought a second copy to give to our high school.

          Book Description

This book is so much more than a recounting of old games. The football fates of Michigan and NotreDame have been intertwined since the first meeting in November 1887, and this richly illustrated, updated edition weaves these two chronologies together to produce a college-football-rivalry book like no other.

          4 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-01-06

Firstly I was impressed that the author is Canadian. To have the knowledge and determined approach to gather the statistics, about something as sacred as Bigtime college football in the midwestern USA is a job in itself. The book was not just something that has statistics strewn all through it, but a glimpse into the politics and thinking behind the scenes of college footballs biggest rivalry. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent history, few photos.......2005-10-04

This is an excellent written history. I wished it had more photos or other visuals to complement the storyline.

Overall, this is a great buy for either fan of the universities or any rivalry at all.
