Knowledge Management.......2004-01-03
The authors have reworked the first edition of the book and imroved the content of the second edition with the latest developments and researchs in knowledge management. The Fraunhofer Framework for Knowledge Management suggests a very helpful basis for developing KM solutions.
Book Description
"Imaginization is typical of Gareth Morgan's work--stimulating, thought-provoking, original, and well-written."
--Anne Golden, President,
United Way of Greater Toronto
"The book is exciting. It opens up ways of developing both organization and management. It inspires ideas of excellence and achievement and gives hope for this age. You can probably open this book anywhere and find something of value."
--BUSINESS AGE
"Morgan has written an amazing book on imaginative ways of organizing and managing organizations. . . . a book about a new management theory that can self-organize, evolve, twist, turn, and perhaps change at the speed of light. The work provides a way of helping managers understand and develop their creative potential. It offers a means of finding innovative solutions to difficult problems. Anyone interested in modern-day organizations and personal empowerment should read this book....Belongs on the bookshelf of every manager seeking creative ways to transform one's organization and oneself."
--JOURNAL OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIANSHIP
"The stories provide powerful examples of how the use of metaphors can help people in an organization understand their complex feelings and how discussion of the concepts contained in metaphors can help develop a shared sense of vision for the future. . . .
Imaginization is definitely worth reading. The author strikes a responsive cord in calling for new organizational approaches to deal with a dynamic future, and he establishes credibility through numerous examples that document the use of his consulting techniques. . . . One might argue that the book lacks structure and focus. This is true if one is committed to the traditional, hierarchical way of presenting ideas. Visionaries are freed from such constraints as they allow their creativity to flow--and Gareth Morgan is indeed a visionary."
--SRA JOURNAL
"
Imaginization is filled with thought-provoking metaphors (e.g., holograms for organizational design, termites for strategic planning, spider plants for flexibility and decentralization), primitive, but compelling illustrations and stimulating case studies--many of which are products of Morgan's action-learning research on imaginization. This highly readable book rests on a solid underpinning of scholarly research, creative introspection, and originality. This is anything but pop-biz, but it sure could fool you at first glance."
--STERN'S HR MANAGEMENT REVIEW
"A valuable, interesting, and practical addition to the book collection. . . .If you are looking for an amusing and lighthearted trip through Morgan's Metaphoric Management Manual then this is certainly worth a look. Moreover, and I think this is the real value of Morgan's book, he doesn't advocate a simple prescriptive solution to complex organizational problems--other than to plead for the use of more imagination on the part of those involved. To this message I can only add 'hear hear!"
--WORK, EMPLOYMENT, AND SOCIETY
"Will be particularly appreciated by those who learn by, and take heart from, worked examples. . . . All the chapter titles are highly evocative and a quick scan of the excellently abstracted contents pages will help you decide whether to invest the time or not. . . . In the sense that it offers managers a 'show-how guide' to becoming their own theorist,
Imaginization is potentially radical and empowering. What it emphasizes consistently is the fact that we all have theories about the situations we face, and that it is those same inner constructs which can provide the seeds of creative transformation. . . . Following his examples could go a long way to convincing managers that the answers they seek lie within their own hearts rather than outside them in the head of some 'expert.' It also provides a useful model of truly facilitative expert behaviour both in providing generic metaphors and models to help simplify and focus complex situations and in creating a supportive environment in which powerful inner wisdom can be evoked, shared, and creatively synthesized."
--MANAGEMENT LEARNING
"The chapters in this book are themselves imaginative, with varied presentations and opportunities for reader participation; most demonstrate imaginization in action via case studies drawn from Morgan's experience as a consultant and leader of management workshops. Sacha Warunkiw's clever drawings, sprinkled liberally throughout the text, support the importance of metaphor in
Imaginization."
--JOURNAL OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIONSHIP
"As always, Gareth Morgan manages to put into words wonderful pictures and a good way of making concrete things that aren't always easy to see. I have always enjoyed his writing. Provides a guideline for making the theoretical practical"
--Mary Giles,
Department of Education, Manitobe Telephone System
"
Imaginization shows that management is as much art form as science, providing many useful ways to tap the most important resource for competitiveness: brainpower."
--Rosabeth Moss Kanter,
Professor, Harvard Business School, author of The Change Masters
"Gareth Morgan's
Imaginization is exciting stuff. It opens up new worlds for the development of organization and management. . . . This is of far-reaching importance, developing the path-breaking implications of his
Images of Organization."
--Eric Trist,
Professor Emeritus, late of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
"Just one of the insights offered in this book could change the way you think about organization and management--forever!
Imaginization provides a powerful and enjoyable way of making the new management a reality."
--Linda Grant,
Professional Development Executive, Toronto
"
Imaginization is playful and gently subversive. It takes the full use of metaphors for organizational analysis to its most practical level. It is a useful resource for instructors as well as organization participants."
--Peter Frost,
University of British Columbia
"Another landmark book by Gareth Morgan! If a practitioner were going to buy only one book this year, this has to be it."
--John Burdett,
Vice President, Management Development, Lawson Mardon Group
"If your company or your group has yet to achieve its highest levels of performance, read this book! Gareth Morgan brings out the images of achievement, excellence, and hope for this age."
--Ron Carter,
Director, Resource Development Services, Merck Human Health Division, Merck and Co., Inc.
Gareth Morgan brings out the images of achievement, excellence, and hope the leaders for this age may have kept hidden because the 'culture' of their company doesn't seem to value this aspect of their skills. Morgan's insight leads to specific suggestions and actions which enable you to act on your vision. His plea is that imagination, which should be the engine of competitiveness and a constant component of our work, should not end during childhood. If your company is still a bureaucracy or you believe your group has yet to achieve its highest levels of performance, read this book! Most importantly, if you want to make the pressures and rewards of work more fun for those who work.
Customer Reviews:
Good book of management.......2001-08-28
Maybe management is the topic with the poorest quality of books in social sciences. Authors usually think that their readers are so busy or so stupid (or both) that they have to write a book for kids (they repeat the same example one hundred times) Fortunately, there are some authors as Morgan that believe posible to write a simple but interesting book like this one. I know Imaginazation is not the best book of management (even Images of Organization of the same author is better), but it is a quite intelligent one and in management this is a very rare quality.
Great fun and scholarly too!.......2000-11-20
Morgan's book is a delight to read. I couldn't wait to go out and try some of the techniques myself! While extremely readable, Morgan includes a couple of appendices that give the extensive scholarship behind his work.
So much fun, you won't realize how much you're learning........1998-06-05
Innovation and creativity are big buzzwords in management these days. Every second guru has a new paradigm or a new way of thinking, many of which aren't really new and may not be relevant to the situation on the ground. Many books are written on these subjects, mostly long on concepts but short on real tools.
I loved this book because Gareth never falls into that trap. His approach is always created from the situation on the ground, not as manna from above. Indeed, one of his best insights is the way he neatly explodes the word "supervision" into its component parts, showing the assumption of management as people with "super vision" who can see the future. Think about the realities behind that one word, and watch many of your assumptions about managing start to change.
As you might expect, Imaginization has several chapters which use real consulting experiences to illustrate the ideas presented. It's very effective at illustrating the ideas, conveying both the approach in action, and giving people the tools to actually start putting innovation and creativity to work in their workplace. It's also a very enjoyable read, as fun as its name implies.
Gareth Morgan's course was the most useful and well-spent time in my entire MBA at the Schulich School of Business. END

Book Description
This book provides a concise description of the metabolic pathways by which lipids of animal and plant membranes are formed. The book emphasizes modulation of these pathways by hormones, diet, environmental stress, and other factors. This new edition is extensively revised, containing new material on topics such as lipid-mediated signal transduction and lipid-induced protein translocation. The new edition also features an entirely new chapter on lipids covalently bound to proteins. The book is excellent for all researchers and students interested in membrane lipid metabolism.

Book Description
This groundbreaking volume shows how the clarity and discipline of cognitive therapy can be applied to the treatment of family of origin issues, such as alcoholism and incest, without compromising depth and clinical sophistication. Compared to the plethora of books on adult children of dysfunctional families, this work is unique in its use of an integrative cognitive model and structured techniques. The book also shows how ideas highlighted in other orientations--from family therapy to Twelve-Step and "Recovery" programs--can be translated into cognitive terms and incorporated into a cognitive approach. Realistically conveying the complex nature of the treatment process, this book presents the diverse elements of successful therapy not as narrow, rote strategies, but as concepts that can be applied in a wide variety of cases.
Treating Family Of Origin Problems begins with a discussion of the characteristics of dysfunctional families and an overview of the cognitive model. Subsequent chapters explore coping strategies, goals of recovery and treatment, diagnostic considerations, and assessment of family of origin issues. Ways in which the therapist's own family of origin issues and the therapist's posture can influence the treatment process are addressed in a discussion of various metacommunicative elements that can affect the client's ability to use treatment constructively.
Throughout, illustrative clinical material shows how clinicians can utilize embedded messages and other techniques to circumvent resistance; confront various types of acting-out behavior while remaining in a supportive, collaborative posture; and provide a consistent focus in treatment, highlighting the underlying mechanisms that cause distress without becoming mired in unproductive attention to the presenting symptoms. The volume concludes with discussions of building coping strategies, utilizing relationship material, and variations in the recovery process.
Written for mental health professionals from a wide variety of disciplines and theoretical backgrounds, Treating Family Of Origin Problems will provide clinicians who have had little or no exposure to cognitive therapies with a guide to formulating an active treatment plan that can be sustained over time. Cognitive therapists will benefit from the book's illustration of how the cognitive approach can be expanded to embrace key concepts from other treatment orientations. An extremely comprehensive and detailed work, this volume is an ideal text for courses in cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, and integrative psychotherapy, as well as general courses in psychotherapy.
Customer Reviews:
Very practical and informative.......2004-04-24
This book is very readable and useful. I haven't read the whole thing, but I definitely like the approach here and plan to buy a copy real soon now.
I particularly like how many small sections start with a bit of theory, provide as many as three brief "case-history" examples of the theory applied, and wrap it up with a paragraph showing how the theory can be extended or reinforcing the above treatment. This approach seems very effective in teaching the concepts without excessively pedagogical devices like checklists and questions.
I can't speak for professional therapists, but for me it's just right.
Clearest, least pathologizing explanation of CBT I've read.......2002-02-26
I supervise psychology graduate students in a hospital setting, and plan to use this book to teach cognitive therapy concepts. The author's discussion of "seeding" future therapeutic contacts and deepening the therapy over sequential contacts presents a highly pragmatic framework for real-world case conceptualization and goal setting.

From the minute she was born to the end of the '96 Olympic Games, this book is the ultimate one to learn about Shannon Miller. The book had plenty of great information, and you learn tons and tons of stuff about her. There were also tons of awesome pictures too! This is a must-read for all gymnastics fans.
Excellent!.......2002-07-15
This book goes into great detail about Shannon's gymnastics career from the beginning up until the 96 Olympics and her professional career. It's the best book I have read on her so far. This book is great for a fan who wants this book as a "map" of her career, or for someone who did not watch gymnastics before 96.
For Shannon Fans.......2002-01-04
I am a huge Shannon Miller fan, and this book is great. I have read it twice and I am still not bored with it. It gives great insight into her past competitions, what she went through, and the things that led up to them. It is really wonderful and detailed.

An updated guide to the language of the Roman Empire.
Whether interested in learning Latin or just seeking a deeper understanding of English, readers will find a fun alternative to the standard dusty tomes usually associated with Latin. Included in this revised edition are updated vocabulary lists relevant to today's world, expanded pronunciation guides, Latin-to-English and English-to-Latin translations, and a workbook of exercises, reading passages, and tools for greater comprehension of the language.
In 2002, the number of high school students taking Latin tests for college credit had risen 95% since 1993
According to CNN, educators are increasingly turning toward Latin to improve student performance in reading, math, and science
Perfect reference tool for law school, medical school, music school, and other graduate school students faced with getting through a Latin course as a requirement
Customer Reviews:
A needed update.......2006-10-13
For a "dead" language you may ask why an update on such a book is needed? The second edition had a promised section in the answer key for chapter one, which was missing. Such an omission can be a discouragement to a beginner in just about anything, particularly languages. I remember a guidebook to the Delphi programming language, from Sams Publishing, which had a mistake in the very first coding exercise.
Well done Ms Harwood. It's a great book, well set out and with plenty of humour in the "Complete Idiot's" tradition, whilst still not being over the top. The paradigms at the back of the book are useful and digestible.
Supplementary to any Latin course, including this book, I'd purchase vis-ed (see vis-eddotcom) flashcards. Their Latin flashcards are great. I don't work for the company, honestly, I live on the other side of the planet.
Book Description
The latest edition of our comprehensive Latin primer, this covers basic vocabulary, grammar, and construction in an approachable format that offers a refreshing alternative to the standard, stuffy texts.
Customer Reviews:
Riddled with errors, and thoroughly ideological.......2007-06-13
One wonders if Miss Harwood has actually studied the language, as the text is permeated with obvious errors. Besides this, the reader is treated to the author's ideological hobbyhorses throughout. Imagine yourself picking up this book on the Latin language, settling down for good study, and then being treated to bizarre rants about gender politics? Yuck.
Get Wheelock. Nobody has yet come close to Wheelock's Latin Grammar. Get it, and the helpful workbook.
Excellent preliminary introduction!.......2006-08-05
This is just a wonderful little guide to help those who may have little or no background in Latin to take a dip in the pool of the language. Although, no, this is not the volume that will provide you with medievalist-like fluency in the language at the completion of the book, it is a great survey.
I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in getting a taste of Latin and what might be involved in further study of the language. Go ahead, get your feet wet!
Poorly edited--complete waste of time.......2006-05-20
Harwood's acknowledgements thank Mary Vandiver, a technical reviewer, "who double-checked the accuracy of what you'll learn here, to help us ensure that this book gives you everything you need to know about learning Latin." Harwood and Vandiver (not to mention Alpha Books, the publisher) should be ashamed of themselves for allowing such a sloppily written and edited book to appear in association with their names.
The book is full of errors, worst of all in the exercises and answer keys. For example, the correct Latin translation of "The work is produced" is listed as "Labor"; even I, a complete idiot, know that "work" in the context of the sentence should be translated as "opus" rather than "labor" . . . and that you kind of need a verb to complete the sentence. DUH.
Little care has been used to make sure that the exercises can be beneficial. For example, some of the exercises require a knowledge of vocabulary that has not yet been introduced. The same translation exercise requires one to know that "hold" is "tenere," but that word doesn't make its first appearance until later in the text. Yet the words "muraena" (eel) and "malva" (mallow) had been relentlessly drummed into my head--to what purpose I can't possibly imagine.
Likewise, the exercises undermine the credibility and utility of the author's flippant approach to grammar. "But hey!" she says repeatedly throughout the text after introducing a grammatical concept in the most cursory manner possible, "Forget all that!" (In the original, the words are even italicized.) Yet it's impossible to provide correct answers to any of the exercises that require you to conjugate verbs without knowing whether a particular verb is first, second, third, or fourth conjugation--information she suggests is of little practical importance and that she fails to explain in sufficient depth. Anyone who can successfully complete the exercises has no need for the book; those who cannot should thank Harwood and company for the frustration they experience.
The bottom line is that, as another reviewer stated, Latin is not a language for idiots. If you only want a smattering, this book is better than nothing I suppose, but there are surely sources available that are more useful. If you are looking for a introductory text to ease you into Wheelock or something else more advanced, STAY AWAY--this lousy book will only end up confusing and frustrating you, and you'll have to unlearn most of what little grammar it actually bothers to teach.
F-
Harmful, Hobbling "Hysteria's Herstory" .......2006-04-26
I'm giving this book two stars instead of three because the author felt compelled to waste so much white space on her leftwing, feminist agenda. Ms. Harwood has published several articles on the supposed sexism of Latin textbooks, and so litters her book with largely pointless textboxes containing "gender-specific historical tidbits" which she calls "Hysteria's Herstory." (Something tells me that doesn't have quite the alliterative ring the author intended.)
Likewise, what Ms. Harwood refers to as "the Christian Church" of the so-called Dark Ages is in reality the Catholic Church. Presumably, the correct identifier didn't sit well with her progressive sensibilities.
For an agenda-free discourse on Latin, get the Dummies book or stick with Wheelock's Latin 6e.
Latin is not a language for "complete idiots"........2005-10-04
There are quite a few things that I did not like about this book. Luckily I borrowed it from my Spanish teacher in 8th grade and did not have to continue my life knowing that I wasted my money on a bad book.
Some people will tell you that learning vocabulary is the hardest thing in learning a language. This is most certainly false. With proper learning techniques learning vocabulary is not difficult at all; I did, however, feel that this book introduced far too many vocabulary words at one time.
The author attempts to retard the importance of the study of grammar while learning Latin. To be successful in your study of Latin, however, you must have a very _clear_ understanding of the language's grammar. The explanations in this book cause one to develop a very fuzzy understanding that is insufficient for clear thinking, reading, translation, and composition.
I highly recommend that you do not purchase this book and instead purchase Wheelock's Latin. I am going through that book right now, and everything is very clearly explained; the number of vocabulary items introduced in each lesson is perfect in my opinion -- not too much, not too little -- and I do not ever develop that "fuzzy" understanding that came from reading this book.
