Book Description
Lives of the Laureates offers readers an informal history of modern economic thought as told through autobiographical essays by eighteen winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics. The essays not only provide unique insights into major economic ideas of our time but also shed light on the processes of intellectual discovery and creativity. This fourth edition adds five new Nobel laureates to its list of contributors: Gary S. Becker, 1992 recipient; John C. Harsanyi, co-recipient in 1994; Robert E. Lucas, Jr., 1995 recipient; Myron S. Scholes, co-recipient in 1997; and James J. Heckman, co-recipient in 2000. This edition also includes a new afterword by the editors, "Lessons from the Laureates."
Lives of the Laureates collecs revised presentations from a continuing lecture series at Trinity University in San Antonio, for which Nobelists at American universities are invited to give an account of "My Evolution as an Economist." Some common motivating themes emerge: the importance of real world events and a desire for relevance -- as seen in James Tobin's decision to enter economics in order to understand the ruin caused by the Great Depression and in Gary Becker's recourse to economics to help him understand inequality, race, and class; the influence of great teachers -- several cite the charismatic Milton Friedman; the right conditions for creativity and intellectual discovery -- as found at the University of Chicago starting in the late 1940s, and the Rand Corporation in the 1950s; and the role of chance in their careers -- the "lucky accidents" that set them on one path rather than another. Together, these individual accounts give what the editors call a "comprehensive picture of the diverseness, richness, and profundity that is the hallmark of contemporary economic thought in America."
Customer Reviews:
turns rather repetitive after a while.......2007-01-29
The book's whole idea (having a lot of Nobel laureates write about themselves) might have worked well for, say, six to eight such laureates, but it just doesn't scale to the 18 that are now writing -- a kind of dull repetitiousness falls upon the whole work by about the halfway mark or earlier. If you do get this book, and that may be worthwhile since each individual essay is useful and readable, by all means read it in small snippets (1-2 autobiographies at a time) with long waits in-between: trying to just read it cover to cover is a mistake.

I couldn't ski without it.......2006-02-26
Years ago I ran into this book in my local book store (long before Amazon.com) and bought it. I had taken 2 ski lessions in my life and got started downhill skiing later in life, perhaps I was in my forties. I struggled along with the green and easy blue slopes, but the majority of the mountain was not open to me. If I tried something more difficuilt, I would fear and fall. No matter how hard I worked the green slopes, I just wasn't getting any better. I lacked skill and confidence.
Then I started reading this book. What struck me was how I felt like I understood what Lito was trying to get into me. I remember copying a couple pages of each section and placing them in a zip lock bag when I would go skiing. I'd pull out the lession points I had selected and read it over and over carefully and practiced exactly what he said to do.
I realized that each chapter was seemly long, but also easy to read and then I realized that what Lito had done was to explain the same lession many different ways and one, at least, was sure to hit me right on. That was his key, and what made the book so thick; he explained it over and over but each time from a different perspective until each reader would click on at least one of the explainations and just get it!
As I write this today, I have just skiied all over Kirkwood's black diamonds, I'm 58 years old and 13 years ago had quad heart bypass. I buy a season pass and ski as many days as my schedule and the weather permits and have for years now.
I looked this book up today on Amazon to see if I could buy it for a friend as I seemed to have loaned my copy out and haven't seen it in years. If you have started skiing, taken a begining lession or 2, you will want to read this book like no other. And if you think that you can't really learn to ski well from a book, just remember this "old man" skiing the black diamonds of Kirkwood and every other place he visits.
Ski Bible.......2006-01-09
Wow. This is like the ski bible, if there is such a thing. In this book, you learn how to create beginner wedges, transition to wedge christies, progress to parallel, and finally ski parallel dynamically like the pros do. You also learn how to carve and ski in various conditions using simple but effective techniques. There is even a chapter on tactics for Nastar racing. I was skeptical whether this would be a good how-to-ski book when I browse through the book because the illustrations are in black and white and look so simple. But after I read the book cover-to-cover, I realized this is the best ski book I ever read. I found the instruction in the other ski books very hard to remember as they are complex. Time and time again when I'm on the slopes, I would fall back to the techniques and tactics taught in this book.
Amazing!.......2005-03-26
I am a 29 yr old non-athlete, who started skiing last year and could only go upto the wedgie turns level down the green slopes. Thank heavens I found this book and bought one copy. After reading three chapters, I hit the slopes, pushed myself to moderate and difficult blue slopes. Oh boy! I couldn't believe the way I was skiing. I couldn't conceal the wide grin on my face as I was making those smooth parallel S turns. I never believed one could learn skiing by reading a book. This book works, delivers everything it promises. Thanks Lito, for teaching me how to ski.
A must-have for any skiier.......2002-03-25
It's happened to just about any skiier. You get over the initial fear of falling, and learn how to get from the top of the hill down to the bottom. You move from the greens to the blues, and get a sense of what skiing is generally about. But you're not *great*.
This plateau is hit by skiiers of all ages and backgrounds. They know the mechanics of skiing, and they know what to do. But they marvel at those people zooming down the slopes effortlessly, as if they were dancing on the snow.
The solution is this book. I didn't even buy it on my own originally - it was given to me by a skiier friend who had read it and loved it. The book made a circuit through our skiing group and soon we all had copies of it. We then lent those out to friends, so they could learn too! This wasn't the basics - how to snowplow, how to stop. And it wasn't complicated either. It was full of great, practical, easy to understand *tips* that you could immediately apply to your own skiing.
Highly recommended!
Just buy it and read it.......2001-03-18
This is not just the best book on skiing available, it's the best way to learn, period. I never thought I could learn a sport from reading a book, but I skied for twenty years and never got any better. Then I read this book and in one week I was three times the skier. It was like a new sport. Since then I have encouraged a half-dozen friends to read it, all with the same results. My friend Al neglected to actually read the book for years. Then one time we went skiing together and he was suddenly doing everything right, looking like a new, confident, expert skier. I was amazed, and I remarked "your skiing is SO much better!" He replied "I read the book!"

Tough to NAVIGATE!!!!.......2006-04-28
I have used Turbo Tax since 2002. It is 2006 and I would have thought they would pay more attention to navigation problems. Now I am compelled to say something. Inevitably, each year it is a different problem. They need a QA team. So I tell it to import my info from Fidelity, it seems to run fine. I am pleased. I could not get it to import from another firm, HarrisDirect. So I hit Done so I can enter things manually. Then I get a password for another firm so I try to go back to the import screen but it isn't there. So I hit import from the file menu. Then it puts me in HarrisDirect and will not let me out. When I hit Done, it appears to have lost my Fidelity info.
This is rediculus. I try calling but there is a 10 min wait. I try online chat but I get cut off.

Customer Reviews:
Facinating!.......2005-01-19
Personally, I found this book fascinating and intriguing look into underwater archaeology. Having been on archaeological sites myself this type of book is like candy for the mind. It's like a real life Indiana Jones. Besides, a lot of archaeology is getting excited about something as mundane as a peanut. It allows us to see how people ate, farmed, etc in the past and to draw parallels into how we live now. Also, to rebut the previous commentary about the book sounding like it was written by a bureaucrat spending tax payers dollars let me enlighten you about how this works. 1) It can be very hard to get tax dollars to do archaeology. 2) A lot of work researching in books and archives goes into a site before it is even excavated/dived on. 3) Depending on the type of site determines how much excavation is done. 4) Private funding went into some of the sites mentioned in the book.
Clive Cussler, who wrote the foreword, pays for, and does, a lot of research without ever tapping into the governments piggy bank. Same with how the Vrow Maria was discovered, etc. So, a word to the wise, before you trash something down and harshly critique it understand just what you're talking about. Uninformed commentary just sounds ignorant. Shipwrecks are sacred gravesites, and accident sites in some cases, but they do need to be treated with respect and care. Would one have so callous an opinion about the pyramids in Egypt? Or perhaps an American Civil War battlefield? You tell me.
Adventures of a Sea Hunter? Hardly .......2005-01-04
This book wouldn't be so disappointing if the title wasn't so midleading. The author simply writes about previously discovered wreck sites and offers mundane accounts of his visits. His enthusiasm and historical perspective are commendable but reeks of a bureacrat trying to justify flying around at taxpayer expense.
The book merely offers the author's assessments of these wreck sites. No major new discoveries. He actually found a 150-year old peanut on one wreck and tries to get the reader excited about it. The title should be " The Follow-Up Visits of a Sea Janitor".
It gets old reading the ongoing proclamation by the author and his bureacratic archaeology brethren that these shipwrecks are sacred gravesites and should only be accessible to his kind. These sites are accident scenes and none of the victims were properly laid to rest.
If you are looking for true adventure try "Shadow Divers" or any Robert Marx book.

Customer Reviews:
Teaches you how to get your customer back!.......2005-11-01
Many business books talk about how to get new customers
to come into our front door . . . there's nothing wrong with that,
of course . . yet Feargal Quinn in his excellent CROWNING THE
CUSTOMER says what's really important is his Boomerang
Principle: the name of the game is getting the customer back.
Quinn, founder of the Superquinn supermarket chain in Ireland,
developed this principle when as a youngster, he watched
his father operate a successful holiday camp . . . guests, at
the end of their week's stay, were encouraged to return the
next summer . . . when and if they did, it was easy to
determine that any particular week--or even summer--was
successful.
CROWNING THE CUSTOMER presents many similar ideas
that may sound equally simple, but amazingly, just aren't
put into practice as often as should be the case.
For example, in Chapter 7, Quinn talks about how to make
customer panels work . . . this one chapter alone is worth
whatever you might pay for the book . . . you'll learn why it
is imperative that you do the following:
1. In selecting your panel, touch all the bases but don't worry
too much about being fully representative.
2. Don't pay your panel members
3. Let your customers set the agenda.
4. Keep your side as small as possible.
5. Be aware of the flattery obstacle. (In other words, don't just
let your customers compliment you.)
6. Don't answer back.
7. Circulate a report on each customer panel widely within your
organization.
8. Take action on the comments, suggestions and criticisms.
What I really liked about CROWNING THE CUSTOMER were the
numerous examples on found on virtually any page . . . in
reading it, you'll come across useful tidbits that can be
applied to business and non-profit organizations . . . among
them, to name just a few:
* In our business, we have a rule which requires our top
management to do their own household shopping once a month.
This gives them first-hand experience of what shopping is like, seen
from the customer's perspective.
* After using names, the most important step towards seeing
your customers as people is to actually look at them.
* The next time you are tempted to say, "Which will we go for,
this market or that one?" try asking yourself: "Can we not
go for both?"
This book is THE origin of a movement that span tomorrow.......2005-09-29
This guy invented everything there is to know about REAl Customer satisfaction , and way ahead of Harvard or other gurus.
The principle he illustrate in this book are valid for tomorrow.
I bought multiple copies of the book , and I am giving it as a gift to everybody who claim to understand customer care.
To whom it may concern.......2001-08-12
First of all, i would like to thank Mr. Quinn for his book and attention. the book is excellent i tought many thing from it. The language is very clear and has alot of advices that applicable to any businees again, tahnk you for the book with respect Sayed Omar The American Uinversity in Cairo
Available in UK.......2000-12-07
This excellent book is not out of print! It is available through Amazon.co.uk in both hardback and paperback. It is an excellent read and a must for anybody in the service sector.
A good place to start learning to be customer driven.......1999-02-17
Mr. Quinn writes a very readable, quotable, and interesting book. The Irish grocer tells you about his roots in the service sector and his extraordinary success in the grocery industry. Long on story and anecdote, I only wish this book had more empirical evidence, though I agree with Mr. Quinn that such evidence is difficult to measure.
