The mystery of weather........2006-01-30
I have beenn using this book for yeaars--I began with the first edition, and now am enjoying the second. It is brief; to the point. And as a native of S.F., I can attest to its accuracy.
The weather near the sea is almost always unpredictable, but Gilliam gives all the components, all the causes, and makes it possible to understand--if not predict--our weather.
The only problem I find is that the book is too short.

This short book provides a very understandable explanation of how Bay Area weather is formed by topography, winds, and the ocean. He devotes sections to the four seasons, in which he tells how the fog is formed, where storms come from, and why there is so much variation within Bay Area microclimates. He also has a chapter on clouds, and a concluding chapter on climate change. I never knew much about weather (besides what I understood from forecasts on TV: sunny, partly cloudy, rain, etc.), but now I appreciate more the unique climates of the SF Bay region.

Excellent Collection of Workouts from Men's Health Magazine.......2006-07-11
This book delivers what it promises: A Collection of total Body Workouts.
The fact that every workout is in Poster format is great and practical, you just select the workout you want to try, take the specific poster out with you, and you are done to begin training. I really love the functionality of having the whole workout in just one page.
Its a fantastic idea for a training book, well executed, and with the total body workouts included I believe its a great deal.

I like this book. It gives you two dozen posters for working out that vary from fat burning to building power . Another reviewer thought that they should have workouts for specific body parts ( ie, triceps , biceps , etc .) . I felt the opposite - they should have focused more on total body workouts only . Maybe a compromise, maybe they should make two books - one for power or serious bodybuilders and one for people who want a trim and lean physique - including circuit training , for traveling , the ball , body weight and medicine ball workouts .
But back to the book at hand , if you are looking for a easy to follow , easy to use workout plan that offers a variety of sensible workouts plans look no further .

The pictures and descriptions of the exercises are great, as are the exercise plans provided. The only negative I could find is that the posters seem to have random exercises on them. I was expecting a poster for triceps, a page for quads, a page for shoulders, etc... The book seems to be aimed more at short, effective, total-body workouts. This is cool, but if you are looking for posters to lead you through intensely precise exercises for particular body parts, there are a limited number of posters to that effect.

A great vocabulary builder!.......2003-08-09
Nurnberg and Rosenblum did a fine job putting together this book of vocabulary words. The different chapters focus on various themes or groups of words, including some from mythology. Some rather obscure and challenging terms are included, and I particularly liked that aspect of this publication. If you're looking for an entertaining vocabulary building book that includes more words than other competing items, then this is the ideal vade mecum for you.

I got this book while preparing to take the GRE. Their choice of words and their explanations are very good. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who does not just want to cramme the words for an exam. If you love english, you will love this book.
just Don't buy this book!.......2000-06-22
I bought 3 vocabulary books for study during summer. Among those 3, this book has the worst quality. the words in this book are too old (1950s) Maybe my grand father found this book was useful in that days. But not now!. And the examples and explanations are so weak that these words don't make any chunk as they insist! Moreover, this book has unreasonable higher price than other vocablary books. the paper is so low quality . And the letters are too small to percieve. You might regret if you buy this low quality book. I recommend to buy "1100 words you need to know". That was really helpful.
The bible for the virtuoso of etymology.......1998-06-10
This is the most incredibly wonderful book written on the subject of words. The approach is not like wordlists but is full of stories and anecdotes. This book is an eyeopener for the wonderful world of words.
A must for anyone interested in words at any level.
More exciting than its title would suggest.......1998-01-23
I originally bought this book at a library used book sale some time ago and figured it might come in handy sometime. When I finally got around to reading it, I couldn't put it down. It is replete with effective ways of learning new words, recognizing how groups of words are related, and how to remember their meanings. But they make it fun with mini history lessons, tales of Greek gods and heroes, and humorous anecdotes of students' malapropisms as well as detailed etymologies.
This terrific tome would make an ideal prep for the GRE or any standardized vocabulary test.
There are also sections on common Latin, French, Italian, German, & Spanish phrases & expressions.
This is way more than an antiseptic, desultory, unrelated listing of vocabulary words. I learned a great deal from this book and I considered myself to have a pretty good vocabulary before I read it. Enjoy!

Excellent Thorough coverage.......2004-12-18
Fantastic photos. Fine background text. Knowledgable author. But the one thing that got me was instead of this being a historical look at the boxing game in Las Vegas, it really turned into Dahlberg's view of Boxing in Vegas.
If a book is to be based on your opinion, I'm fine with that. But doen't disguise it as a historical perspective of the topic and then force YOUR PERSONAL opinions in as if they WERE fact.
A blatant example of this was Dahlberg's OPINION that Tommy Hearns was exhausted and spent in the 13th round of his epic bout with Leonard. If Tim wants to quote Manny Steward's opinion on Hearns' weight and physical condition in the bout, that's fine. But don't pass off your personal opinion as fact. In MY Opinion, what stopped Hearns in the 13th round was Leonard's fists. Hearns certainly gave no noticable appearence of being Spent or exhausted. He slowed down when Ray NOTICABLY hurt Tommy.
I also did not care for the top 10 Vegas fights either. If you are basing it on historical significance or hype and build up, than how does Leonard Hagler not make the list? ANd if it is based on ferocity and sustained action, how does Barrera Morales not make the list? Were Tyson Berbick (Why? so we have a fight for Tyson in Vegas that Mike acutally won?)Holyfield Bowe I & II and Foreman Moorer more deserving than the two fights I mentioned, each for different reasons?
The bias and inconsistancies prevent 5 stars form me. I previewed it before I purchased it, so I feel it was worth the buy. But It ranks only as very good and not exceptional in my book

Fight Town is the Undisputed Champion!.......2004-12-02
If you like boxing at all, you're going to love this book. I bought it at the author's website after reading a review on a boxing website, and it was even better than I imagined. This is a big book, 228 pages in a coffee table size, and filled with great photos that really are images in time. There's Sugar Ray Robinson with two little kids on the Las Vegas Strip in 1952, and Muhammad Ali fighting in Las Vegas for the first time in 1961. The book opens with a photo I've never seen before of Ali taunting Sonny Liston after Liston knocked out Floyd Patterson to win the heavyweight title in Las Vegas in 1963. This photo alone is almost worth the price of the book. There's great photos from the 50s to fights in 2004, from Liston and Ali to Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya. These aren't your standard fight pictures, either. They are taken before fights, in casual settings, during fights, you name it. Did I mention it had words too? Dahlberg has been around fights in Vegas for a long time and it shows. He tells inside stories, such as how Marvin Hagler was so tight with his money he made sure the phones in the hotel rooms of his entourage were turned off and how Bob Arum nearly landed the first Ali-Frazier fight in Las Vegas. He tells how Caesars Palace built an outdoor arena for the big fights, and how great the hotel's pavillion was for fighters and how Sugar Ray Leonard came up with the game plan to beat Hagler. It's the kind of book you'll put out on your coffee table just to pick up and read a bit and look at the pictures again and again. I got mine at the fighttownvegas.com website, so I could get it personally signed by the author. My friends are all jealous.
