Book Description
In Markets from Networks, one of America's most influential sociologists unveils a groundbreaking theory of the market economy. Arguing that most economists use overly abstract models of how the economy operates, Harrison White seeks a richer, more empirically based alternative. In doing so, he offers a more lucid, generalized treatment of the market models described in his important earlier work in order to show how any given market is situated in a broader exchange economy.
White argues that the key to economic action is that producers seek market niches to maximize profit and minimize competition. As they do so, they base production decisions not only on anticipated costs from suppliers and anticipated demand from buyers, but also by looking at their competitors. In fact, White asserts, producers act less in response to actual demand than by anticipating it: they gauge where competitors have found demand and thus determine what they can do that is similar and yet different enough to give themselves a special niche.
Building on these and related insights, White creates new mathematical models of how the economy works and how the interaction of its sectors creates mutual protection from the uncertainties of business. These models provide new ways of accounting for profits, prices, market shares, and other vital economic phenomena. He shows, for example, that prices are determined by the coalescing of local variables rather than set in terms of averages as implied by the ''law'' of supply and demand. The model of ''pure'' competition favored by economics is deficient, he concludes, as it fails to account for the varied circumstances of particular industries.
Throughout, White draws extensively on case studies of American businesses and on recent mathematical and sociological work on networks. Rivaling standard economic theories with its rich empirical grounding, sheer originality, and scholarly rigor, Markets from Networks will resonate in economics and economic sociology for years to come.

Book Description
This new edition builds on the strengths of the previous edition, and offers students a concise but broad coverage of the main theories informing organisational behaviour. The book moves from the individual to the organisational and the global context, and critically examines the three themes of change, communication and conflict in each. It promotes critical evaluation of theory and practice to enable students and managers to interpret and deal with organisational problems. This book is suitable for students requiring an introduction to organisational behaviour on business and management undergraduate degrees, post-experience and postgraduate courses, and professional courses. It is also designed as a focused and lively general reader on the subject.

Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive and balanced overview of soil amendments and their effect on the environment. It encompasses both positive and negative aspects of chemical fertilizers that supply nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, lime, micronutrients, and trace metals. Pros and cons are discussed with respect to the optimal and the most environmentally sound use of soil amendments, and guidance is provided on how to minimize the environmental effects of amendments. Natural fertilizers, including manure, sludge, fly ash, phosphogypsum, and byproduct gypsum are also discussed. Alternative agronomic practices and biotechnology that ameliorate or minimize potential adverse effects of fertilizer use are examined in detail. This authoritative and up-to-date treatise is multidisciplinary in nature and international in scope, a powerful reference tool for researchers, a thorough guide for practitioners and policy makers, and an excellent text book for academic courses.

Description:
We tested the effects of three amendments (a biosolid compost, a sugar beet lime, and a combination of leonardite plus sugar beet lime) on trace element stabilisation and spontaneous revegetation of a trace element contaminated soil. Soil properties were analysed before and after amendment application. Spontaneous vegetation growing on the experimental plot was studied by three surveys in terms of number of taxa colonising, percentage vegetation cover and plant biomass. Macronutrients and trace element concentrations of the five most frequent species were analysed. The results showed a positive effect of the amendments both on soil chemical properties and vegetation. All amendments increased soil pH and TOC content and reduced CaCl"2-soluble-trace element concentrations. Colonisation by wild plants was enhanced in all amended treatments. The nutritional status of the five species studied was improved in some cases, while a general reduction in trace element concentrations of the aboveground parts was observed in all treated plots. The results obtained show that natural assisted remediation has potential for success on a field scale reducing trace element entry in the food chain.

Freud the Scientist, the Atheist, the Jew.......2002-01-29
In 1918, Sigmund Freud posed the following question in a letter to his unlikely Swiss friend, the Christian pastor and lay analyst Oskar Pfister: "Quite by the way, why did none of the devout create psychoanalysis? Why did one have to wait for a completely godless Jew?" It is this question that provides both the epigraph and the intellectual predicate for "A Godless Jew," Peter Gay's erudite, brief and readable exploration of the relationship between Freud's atheism and his seminal, world-changing innovations in how mankind came to view the human mind in the twentieth century.
Subtitled "Freud, Atheism, and the Making of Psychoanalysis," Gay's short book was originally embodied in three lectures delivered at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in December 1986. It is an attempt, in Gay's words, "to translate [Freud's] two light-hearted rhetorical questions into three propositions." Gay states these propositions as follows:
"It was as an atheist that Freud developed psychoanalysis; it was from his atheist vantage point that he could dismiss as well-meaning but futile gestures all attempts to find common ground between faith and unbelief; it was, finally, as a particular kind of atheist, a Jewish atheist, that he was enabled to make his momentous discoveries."
After an introduction exploring the late nineteenth century intellectual milieu in which science and religion did battle ("Science Against Religion: `Clericalism, There's the Enemy'"), wherein Gay succinctly draws a counterpoint between the thought of William James and Freud, "A Godless Jew" successively examines each of Gay's three propositions.
Chapter One ("The Last Philosophe: `Our God Logos'") advances the notion that Freud was a child of the Enlightenment, a confirmed atheist who rejected all belief in supernatural faith as inconsistent with the scientific method. "Freud appropriated the whole range of the Enlightenment's agenda, its ideals and its methods, its very language." In doing so, Freud saw his mission, like that of the Philosophes who preceded him more than a century earlier, as one of "awaken[ing] the world from the enchantment in which the magicians and priests had held it imprisoned since pagan antiquity."
Chapter Two ("In Search of Common Ground: `A Better Christian Never Was'") examines the antagonistic relationship between psychoanalysis and religion, an antagonism adumbrated by Freud himself: "Analysis produces no new world view. But it does not need one, for it rests on the general scientific world view with which the religious one remains incompatible." It also examines, however, the way in which many religious thinkers (including Freud's friend Pfister and the brilliant Paul Tillich) managed to absorb psychoanalysis into Christianity and Judaism through a syncretic legerdemain that simultaneously exasperates and amuses.
Chapter Three ("The Question of a Jewish Science") explores the relationship between Freud the Jew and Freud the scientist, for while Freud may have denied the existence of God, he never denied that he was a Jew. The question for Gay, then, is not one of Freud's Jewish identity, but "just what share that identity could have had in the making of psychoanalysis." In exploring the way in one may speak of the presence or absence of a "Jewish quality" in psychoanalysis, Gay examines the professional, intellectual, tribal, and sociological meanings of such a quality. It is an interesting, if at times unsatisfying, discussion that fails to provide the reader with a conclusion more definitive than Gay's statement that "Freud was a Jew, but not a Jewish scientist."

Book Description
Kyudo-the Way of the Bow-is the oldest of Japan's traditional martial arts and the one most closely associated with bushido, the Way of the Warrior. After the Second World War Eugen Herrigel introduced the concept of kyudo to the West in his classic Zen in the Art of Japanese Archery. But
until now, no Japanese kyudo master has published a book on his art in English.
In Kyudo: The Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery, Hideharu Onuma and his American co-authors, Dan and Jackie DeProspero, explain in detail both the spiritual and practical aspects of kyudo. Written with both novices and advanced students in mind, the book is presented in simple,
straightforward language and features hundreds of detailed illustrations, supplemented by rare photographs of Master Onuma, clearly demonstrating the fundamental techniques and daily practice of this form of "standing Zen."
Including chapters on equipment and kyudojo construction, Kyudo: The Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery is the most comprehensive reference work on the subject available. Special sections on problem solving and shitsu (errors) also make it a unique teaching and learning resource, and the
concluding shiteimondo (teacher-student dialogue) provides unparalleled insights into the thoughts and teachings of a true master of the martial arts.

A Must-Have-And-Read book for Kyudo beginners.......2003-06-13
Wonderfull book, covers both spiritual and technical aspects of kyudo practice. Dialogs with Onuma-sensei are very very valuable for real understanding of what kyudo is stands for, problem solving section helps a lot for technics. Very well done as a book - exceptional quality. A must have book...
Should be known as the Kyudo Bible........1999-11-12
This is one of the best books out on the art of Kyudo. I am currently in Japan teaching and have taken up the practice of Kyudo as a way to learn about Japanese culture. The book covers all areas of interest and is very detailed with step by step illustrations. My instructor refers to the book often to point out my mistakes and highlight my improvement. If you are learning Kyudo or just want to read about its history and cultural significance, then this book is for you. You will not be disappointed.

When John F. Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country," he wasn't just stirring the hearts of millions of young Americans, he was also engaging in a little-known form of wordplay called chiasmus. Dr. Mardy Grothe has plumbed the depths of this form for years and catalogued hundreds of examples from ancient times to the present, in Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You (title courtesy of Joey Adams). All it takes is a repeated statement with two elements transposed between them--e.g., fool and kiss--and you get a powerful, often humorous, rhetorical prop. Collected in chapters like "Chiasmus for Lovers" and "Chiastic Compliments and Insults," the wisdom of the ages shines in gems such as Cicero's "It is as difficult for the good to suspect evil as it is for the evil to suspect good." Even better is Grothe's running commentary on the form and its masters and the often-biting humor found in the classics, for instance Dr. Johnson's "Your manuscript is both good and original; but the part that is good is not original, and the part that is original is not good." Fortunately for us, the good doctor wasn't referring to Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You, which is as fun to read as a reference as it is to refer to a reader. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
What do Mae West, John F. Kennedy, Victor Hugo, and H. L. Mencken have in common? They all indulged in chiasmus-a literary device in which word order is reversed to hilarious or poignant effect. When Mae West said, "It's not the men in my life, it's the life in my men," she was using chiasmus; when John F. Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country," he was doing the same. Dr. Mardy Grothe has compiled hundreds of examples of chiasmus in this whimsically illustrated collection, bringing this witty and thought-provoking device out of obscurity and into the public imagination.
"There is plenty of delight in this overdue collection." (Houston Chronicle)
Customer Reviews:
A Super Fun Read.......2007-08-27
If you love words and their clever use, you will love this book. Dr. Grothe even has a website for new examples of chiasmus (two or more lines that follow a parallel structure). Here is a fine example of chiasmus.
The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge answered one of his critics with the following chiasmus:
"I will concede your general rule that every poet is a fool.
But as your book serves to show it, not every fool is a poet."
I have to repeat the example of one Amazon reviewer, who quoted this line about the Hemingway centennial:
"Only in the case of Hemingway could the century of the writer be more celebrated than the most celebrated writer of this century."
An historical note!
Mormons have claimed to have found chiastic sentence structures in the Book of Mormon (1830), claiming also that chiasmus was unknown in Joseph Smith's day. The truth is that the chiastic structures found in the Bible were well-known to Bible readers--one book containing examples of parallelisms in "Hebrew poetry" was even advertised on the front page of Joseph Smith's hometown of Palmyra New York (Thomas Hartwell Horne, "An Introduction to the Knowledge and Critical Study of the Holy Scriptures").
The other fact is that Joseph Smith probably did not intentionally produce any chiastic sentence structures as he dictated the Book of Mormon to his scribe, who sat behind a curtain unable to see the gold plates.
Chiastic structures are found in the introduction to the Book of Mormon (admittedly written by Joseph Smith, and in his other writings). Joseph Smith was so repetitious that these unintentional structures are occasionally found (Mormons also delete elements that don't fit in their search for things that "Joseph Smith could not have known").
See my review of "Echoes and Evidences of the Book of Mormon." Echoes and Evidences of the Book of Mormon
Brain candy.......2007-03-09
I am enjoying this book in bits and pieces. If you don't have time for full committment to a novel, this book is easy to read a bit, think about a bit, and go back to later.
And, I have the next two books waiting in the wings for when I finish this one. Plus, I get a new batch via e-mail each week.
A surfeit of chiasms.......2007-01-11
It is, as advertized, a book of word play. Some are quite humerous and others clever and ingenious. However the chiastic style begins to wear after awhile. Ruth Smith
Don't miss it!.......2006-07-01
For people who like "quotes" and "interesting lines", this book is as good as it gets. Excellent language skills and interesting quotes on this book.
Had a lot of fun reading it.
Chiasmus = Absolute Truth ?.......2000-08-16
For the nutshell skip down to ---THE POINT---. If you like to get lost in circular reasoning, by all means read the whole thing. Just be patient if you do; it may seem as if I've gone off on a tangent, but I promise to come full circle. In order to deal with story problems we are taught that mathematical functions have lingual transitions. An example of this is would be: = means "as", and 2 = terms are said to be "like". As with translations between any two languages inevitably something is lost in the transition. In this instance we see that while = means "as" or "like", neither "as" nor "like" means =. In grammar we are taught that "as" and "like" are keywords for simile (which means comparison, from the Latin "similis" meaning similar). Which leads to the next issue; Do the laws of mathematics have a lingual transition? One of the most fundamental laws of math is: A x B = B x A; which would read: the product of A and B is like the product of B and A. While porcelain is the product of heat and clay, the product of heat and clay is not always like porcelain. The heat and the clay must have the same value in order for the comparison to work. I have never learned the English translation for the absolute value sign used in mathematical formulas, but I would imagine it would be "chiastic". Chiasmus seems to imply in its mathematical similarity that it is a capable vehicle for absolute truths. Certainly this book is an insight into truth, or this book is truth into insight, or maybe this truth is a book into insight, perhaps this insight is a book into truth, possibly this insight is truth into a book, or it could be that this truth is insight into a book. I seem to have gotten even myself confused. Lao-Tzu wrote that "He who talks does not know, he who knows does not talk", he also wrote that "The Way of which we are able to speak, is not the Way of which we speak". So why all the words if they are all in vain? The Buddhists have an insightful metaphor (defined by Aristotle as: The intuitive perception of the similarity in dissimilars) for the reason for words despite their futility "fingers pointing at the moon" (the moon symbolizing enlightenment in Buddhism). ------THE POINT?------ Simply that this is a much better book, than this is a review. Dr. Grothe's fingers apparently do a much better job at pointing to the moon than do mine. Where my words have led you deep into the murky waters of samsara, his become the Jewel in the lotus and the lotus in the Jewel. I hope I haven't driven you away from what truly is an inspired book. *** P.S. Sorry Mardy, I had to, Jer.1:7

Book Description
Long considered one of the most underappreciated Yankee greats, Mel Stottlemyre was only 22 in 1964 when he got signed to the Yankees, and quickly became one of their star pitchers–pitching in the World Series in 1964, his first year out. After retiring in 1974, he went on to work with the Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, and Houston Astros, and finally the New York Yankees in 1996, until his retirement in 2005. Stottlemyre's sons Todd and Mel, Jr. both followed in their father's footsteps, becoming star pitchers themselves, continuing a great Stottlemyre legacy that has made the name synonymous with powerhouse pitching. In this, his first autobiography, Stottlemyre will take us behind the scenes, to the golden age of baseball, through almost five decades of Major League behind–the–scenes stories.

Wonderful Baseball Book.......2007-09-15
A great read for any baseball fan and especially true-blue Yankees fans. Mel's remembrances of the great pitchers he's coached and his relationship with George Steinbrenner were especially interesting. I do wish Mel had written more about his pitching career with the Yankees. He had some great years and great games that I wish he'd told us more about. He also got to play with some of the greatest Yankees of all time. Mel had the misfortune of joining the Yankees just when they started declining, but he still had a great career. I'll always remember skipping junior high school (with my parents' permission!) to watch Mel on TV in the 1964 World Series. Thanks for the memories and thanks for the book, Mel. You're a Hall of Famer in my book.
Yankees all the Way.......2007-07-25
A great book with rich history about a time of trouble for the Yankees. Easy smooth reading that keeps you involved with the story. A must read for any Yankee fan or any true baseball fan.
Stott Rocks.......2007-07-17
This is a super baseball book. I have always been a big Mel Stottlemeyer fan. He was the last of the old Yankees from the 1964 pennant winner, and had he played with better teams after that first great rookie season gawd only knows how many games Mel would have won. It deals with his playing and coaching days and the quack medical treatments he received from the then Yankee team physician. I only wish he would have devoted a lot more pages to the years between 65-and 1972 and some of the great games he pitched--the 1-0 two hitter versus AL MVP Vida Blue and Oakland, the 1969 and 1970 All Star Game. Not enough about your playing days Mel during the Horace Clarke/Jake Gibbs/Ron Bloomberg era is my only criticicism. All in all, a super book.

great read.......2004-06-11
I put down Prelude to War to start Brian Jensen's book. It's a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a terrific human interest story and it's interesting for Yankee fans, Yankee haters and non-sports fans alike.
YANKEES ARE METAPHOR FOR AMERICA.......2004-06-08
The Yankees are a metaphor for America. They are the best of all time. People who do not like them feel that way just because they do not want one single team (or country) to be so much better than everybody else, which does not change the fact that they are. People who grow up in New York and still hate the Yankees are like liberals in America who still hate their country.

A sports library must.......2004-04-15
Plain and simple, this book is just a lot of fun to read. While some of the stories of what happened to these once great ball players had me near tears, others had me laughing out loud. And still others had me shaking my head, wondering how some of these guys made it to the ballpark on game days. Jensen's easy-to-read style and dry humor that leaks through now and again makes Where Have All Our Yankees Gone a must have for any sports reader who wants to know what life is like once the lights go out.
