What happens if an employer cuts wages by one cent? Much of labor economics is built on the assumption that all the workers will quit immediately. Here, Alan Manning mounts a systematic challenge to the standard model of perfect competition. Monopsony in Motion stands apart by analyzing labor markets from the real-world perspective that employers have significant market (or monopsony) power over their workers. Arguing that this power derives from frictions in the labor market that make it time-consuming and costly for workers to change jobs, Manning re-examines much of labor economics based on this alternative and equally plausible assumption.

The book addresses the theoretical implications of monopsony and presents a wealth of empirical evidence. Our understanding of the distribution of wages, unemployment, and human capital can all be improved by recognizing that employers have some monopsony power over their workers. Also considered are policy issues including the minimum wage, equal pay legislation, and caps on working hours. In a monopsonistic labor market, concludes Manning, the "free" market can no longer be sustained as an ideal and labor economists need to be more open-minded in their evaluation of labor market policies. Monopsony in Motion will represent for some a new fundamental text in the advanced study of labor economics, and for others, an invaluable alternative perspective that henceforth must be taken into account in any serious consideration of the subject.

If you are going to get into biofeedback as a practitioner you really must have this book. It provides a wonderfully comprehensive, detailed picture of a wide range of biofeedback applications, modalities, issues and techniques. Edited and partially written by Mark Schwartz, founder of the Mayo Clinic Biofeedback program, and Frank Andrasik, both past presidents of AAPB (Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback,) the book offers an encyclopedic amount of information on the most frequently used forms of non-EEG biofeedback. It only has one chapter on EEG biofeedback-- though that one, by Joel Lubar, is an excellent. Even practitioners getting into work which focusses primarily on EEG should buy this book and include in their library, since it offers valuable perspectives on working with the kinds of clients/patients likely to be encountered.

if you are getting into a practice, working with headache, stress disorder, behavioral medicine, etc. then this book should be on your bookshelf.

Frankly, being a bit of a bibliomaniac, I have at least 40 different biofeedback books-- one of the largest libraries on the subject anywhere. I've also co-edited two books on biofeedback myself (published in Russia.) As a biofeedback practitioner since 1972, a biofeedback product inventor, software developer international meeting organizer and entrepreneur, I have recommended the book to hundreds of people and have probably sold, over the years, through my business, at least 300 copies. I know that at least three or four years ago, before the release of the 2nd edition, I heard that over 12,000 copies had been sold. That's pretty amazing for a book of this sort.

Swartz and friends provide a thoughtful and extensive review of the history,methods,and applications of biofeedback practice. Primarily intended for health professionals, the book covers a variety of disorders/medical conditions that can be treated by biofeedback, and provides detailed instructions as to how to treat each disorder. Schwartz has been an integral figure in the development of professional standards for biofeedback practice as well, and the book also addresses this topic, as well as ethic issues. Has proven to be extremely helpful in training and practice. Well written.

Great For Multiple-day Hikes.......2003-05-26

This book is very portable (slim and easy to carry). While it includes day hikes in the first section, the second section is great if you are planning to hike (and camp) for more than one day. Not only does it include trail descriptions, mileage, it also offers advice on how many miles to do per day, etc. I did find one "error" during the Hazel Mountain day hike section (the mileage in the text doesn't match the mileage in the description) but that's not major. Overall, GREAT BOOK!

Hiking the easy way.......2002-12-18

Molloy obviouly spent a lot of time at Shenandoah because all the hikes he picked were winners (at least all those I have gone on so far!). This book tells me just what I want to know: the hike, distance, difficulty, and hiking time. Even better, it gives me a running commentary about what I am going to see on the hike, so I don't miss anything. And it fits right in my pack! I really like the directions to get me to the trailhead. I can pack up and be on the trail in a jiffy. So if you are looking for just the right information (in our era of information overload) Molloy's book is for you.

The Perfect Guidebook.......2002-12-16

I barely have time to hike, much less shift through a thick, overdone guidebook. Molloy's guide is the perfect size. It saves me time, accurately detailing specific hikes to lesser known destinations with exact directions to the trailhead and good maps. It's all I ever need to explore Shenandoah National Park.

An easy to follow guide for selected hikes.......1999-08-01

I like the format of this hiking book the best. A very easy to read and follow guide with just the right amount of side discussions. Maps are nicely done without too much detail and the book is narrow enough to fit in a pocket. I wish all hiking guides would use this format. The selected hikes are well thoughtout and cover all regions of the Park.

I thought this book was the most comprehensive of its kind. The two weeks I spent in the park were enhanced by the knowledge and experience of the author. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of exploring Shenandoah!!!

Know this before you buy this book.......2007-05-01

I have never carried a concealed handgun before, but I am now seriously thinking about getting some training and then getting a permit to carry a concealed handgun. So, I am now educating myself on the subject. Before you buy this book you should know that the author firmly believes .32 and .380 caliber handguns are inadequate for personal defense, so he does not cover guns of those calibers. I am not saying he is wrong, but you should know this before you buy the book.

As far as the content goes, there is one thing I did not like about this book: There are lots of photos of handguns throughout the book, but the photos are not well organized with the text. In other words, if you are reading a paragraph about a particular gun, the photo of the gun - assuming there is one - is not necessarily located near the text. You have to "hunt around" for the photo, which might or might not be on another page. Also, instead of just referencing the photos within the main text, each photo has its own separate text. To me, this makes reading the book very laborious.

The are three separate chapters for "small", "medium" and "large" revolvers and another three for "small", "medium" and "large" semiautomatics. If the point of the book is about "concealed" handguns, why even cover large handguns? I quit reading this book about half-way through. Overall, this book was a waste of time and money for me. There are probably better books about this subject.

Should have bought this book sooner.......2006-03-04

I recently obtained my CCW permit. After spending about $1,000 on pistols that don't fill my need, I purchased one of the recommended pistols. I just wish I had read this book sooner.

The book discusses everything you need to know about your purchase of a concealed weapon.

Good review of different firearms.......2005-06-05

The book's title is exactly what it is a review of different gun types. It is not a guide for usage or concealed carry. However, how appropriate a particular gun is for concealed carry is covered.

Honest and practical.......2005-03-12

This book is a very down-to-earth guide to selecting the best handgun type and caliber for an individual to carry for self-defense. Holsters, combat tactics, and local laws are not discussed, but that isn't the point of the book. Wiley Clapp is a very respected gun writer, a former U.S. Marine and law enforcement officer. His opinion is rather heavily weighted towards larger calibers of handguns, and rightly so. However, he approaches all of the myriad makes and models of handguns objectively. Part of his book does cover the ballistics and physics of different handgun calibers in simple terms. This makes it easier for people who are unfamiliar with guns to understand what exactly it is that makes a gun or bullet truly lethal. The author provides precise measurements of size and weight of all the popular models of pistols, allowing the reader to get an idea of just how light(or heavy!) some handguns can be. This book seems to have been written to those who are new to handguns, but even seasoned gun lovers will enjoy reading this excellent guide.

Not a bad book overall, as it does have some shots of the costumes but my issue is that they are fairly dark in most of the scenes and I wanted to see more detail.

Olaf steals the show........2004-12-18

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH COUNT OLAF appears to be the typical behind the scenes movie book. However, once you begin reading the pages and looking at the pictures, you realize it's not. The whole concept behind the book is that Count Olaf has "edited" the original BEHIND THE SCENES BOOK. The dialogue that is supposed to go with the pictures is often covered over what appears to be scratches of paper and tape that are written on, explaining what Count Olaf wants you to know. It's a cute sight gag, usually only seen in books for young children. However, for anyone who knows anything about THE SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, you know that the gimmick fits perfectly into the general tone and theme of the books and upcoming movie. There are lots of photos from the film and a few surprises for those who haven't seen the movie yet and who have only read the books. So, why don't you make your uncle Olaf proud and buy this book?

This book tells a pretty good much about the movie,and is great for almost any "Series Of Unfortunate Events" fan!This book shows many pictures,tells who the charecters are played by,and that kind of stuff!I personnaly think this book is perfect for any person that is looking foward to the movie(which is being relesed December 17th).
